The TPSparkyRoot exploit works partially by giving temp root on stock Europe 1.56.401.1 ROM.
Writing to system partition is lost after reboot, so it's only temp root.
Does anyone know or can check if this still works on 1.56.401.2 (OTA build I am offered to update to is 254745)?
Note: this is temp root on locked boot loader, without using htcdev.
Get temp root and then try running superuser....

As I said, anything you copy to /system is lost after reboot due to S-ON protection. And this temp root is not really usable for day to day work because ro.kernel.qemu=1 makes your phone real slow.
I was just wondering if temp root exploit still works on newer stock ROMs, because I want to keep the temp root, possibly upgrade the stock ROM, and *not* use htcdev.

I was under the impression that by rooting I would no longer be able to receive the OTA update but now it won't leave me alone. If I allow it to install the upgrade will I have 2.2 with the upgraded radio and still have my root? Thanks for any help!
All depends on if you have s-off. If you s-off you just reflash cwm, and run su, and busybox after the update. I've heard some people have had problems with the update on their rooted phones. Make sure everything is back in place. City ID, Verizon Navigator, yada, yada, yada, or the update will crap out.
Alright I just ran unrevoked forever but I don't really understand what to do next. Would I be better off waiting for the 2.2 root and then upgrading to that and re-rooting?
Still need help if anyone can give it
Rooting doesn't take away the OTA (as you have found out), it just grants you root permissions. What most root users do that take away the ability to get the OTA is flashing a custom ROM. If you are so concerned about losing root, you have a couple of options.
1. Stay with Stock 2.1 with root (until unrevoked figures out how to gain root on stock 2.2)
2. Flash to the RUU 2.2 with root.
3. Flash to a custom 2.1 or 2.2 ROM (which, by nature, gives you root).
If you accept the OTA right now, as it stands, you lose root.
Hi,
I have a stock DHD, which has 2.2 via OTA.
I have gone through a lot of forums articles here on xda but am still not sure about the below points:
1) I know that Visionary would not work on my phone unless i downgrade. But I am confused, wouldn't downgrading remove all the fixes and enhancements which came in 2.2.1 over 2.1 android??
2) Is there any other clean and tested way to root my phone apart from Visionary, which does not need me to downgrade?
3) Apart from the Visionary way, is there any existing way to temproot my phone?
You're downgrading firmware to a rootable one, you're not going back to 2.1, basically you're still on froyo 2.2. Basically you can't root without downgrading, there is no other way.
If you're planning on running custom roms then you can just flash roms with 2.3 or 2.2.1

Yes, downgrading will put you back to software version 1.32, but if you have software version 1.72 or above you will not be able to get root access to your phone.
As soon as you have downgraded, gained permanent root, and optionally gained s-off or eng s-off you will be able to install custom roms of your choice with the newest leaked softare ex Gingerbread.
By my knowledge its no other way to root your DHD, but to follow the very good treads in the developer section.
But the downgrade bit is only a temporary state that you need to do before you install a custom ROM with all the newest features.
But then this means, the there would be no way to keep a backup(nandorid) etc. of my stock/untouched state
If something goes wrong, I would be without a backup of my undisturbed original state.
As far as I know you need temproot to downgrade, but that is in basic shell so you're still not able to make a nandroid backup...
Hi guys.
I've tried both the manual rage and the automatic Visionary R14 methods.
I'm not able to get into temp root with anyone of these two methods
Visonary gives me a black screen and the rage method crashes the terminal emulator app after it restarts (Should restart into temp root, but it just crashes)
Both methods makes the devide VERY slow, i need to reboot to get it up to speed again.
Device info
Android version
2.2.1
Kernel version
2.6.32.21
Software number
1.82.405.1
Not sure what problem is I've 3 G2's rooted using both methods, double check ur steps.
Visionary was easiest n fastest way to root for me....try to factory reset and try visionary again?
Well, that is an easy one. Any ROM version above 1.34 is not yet rootable. You are 1.82.
You need to downgrade to the official 1.34 ROM for your phone carrier/region, then root.

Also, if you are not aware, the Visionary method is riskier than other methods, and can lead to an unrecoverable brick:

Kablamooo.... This has got to be the 4th or 5th thread about being unable to root lol.
Here you go. It's a guide that uses ADB & psneuters. It's probably the safest way of doing it.
Alternatively you can also try the HTC Vision Wiki one which is just as good
hey guys.
did anybody know here how to make 2.3.3 ota update root, i have tried gingerbreak that doesnt working showing just black screen.
my phn is s-on, I do it coz it wont accepting OTA update.
is there any manual process to make it root via adb shell or something like that.?
i dont want to install custom roms i already checked so much of them but the are not fully bugs free and not fully google compatible as i want..
It is not possible. True, not all the ROMs work great, but some do. Try Android Revolution HD 5.1.6.
You have to downgrade first to get root, and then S-OFF if you want to flash custom ROMs.
You can also downgrade, root, get Radio S-OFF, unroot, get OTA again and use GingerBreak. Then you can have root in the latest HTC Gingerbread ROM.

OTA didn't came when radio is S-ON. thats y i did this..
Your phone is always S-ON when it is stock, so surely OTA will work then. And even when it is S-OFF, it does not matter if your /system partition is in stock condition (no root, no bloatware removed).
HTC have stopped Gingerbread OTA because of to many bug (To many have reported problem with SMS, WiFi a.l.). It will be released new version within few weeks when those thing is fixed. Ref HTC support
Thanks jkolko for the useful s-off & eng-off guides. Should anyone else find it an issue, note that if recovery cannot mount your sdcard, you should try another sdcard (found this elsewhere in the forums).
Hi, any app for downgrading? Honestly, not à "hero" when it comes to touching my phone, but would like root (at least to get rid of some stock apps).

To have root in 2.3 you need to use the downgrade guide to 1.32. Root and S-OFF and update to Gingerbread using 2.3 RUU. Then use Gingerbreak .apk to root. Now you have rooted S-OFFed Gingerbread 2.3

Updated to 2.3 from fully rooted 1.32 by RUU, installed AMT and now have su and full root Gingerbread AMT relay works, thanks to developer of script...
Hello Frendz,
The day before yesterday HTC sent an upgrade to the factory default OS (i.e. 2.2 froyo) on my DHD and I happily upgraded to 2.3 Gingerbread. Now, before updating I had permanent root access on my desire through Visionary but just after the update I realised I do not have root anymore. I would appreciate any comments and other experiences in this matter.
Also, during my own research I came across Gingerbreak which is probably the best around for rooting the 2.3 version but all I wanna ask is, if I still need to downgrade to gain root access or is it possible to directly use ginger break somehow? If I am not flashing another Rom, and all I want is Superuser rights.
As, I have never flashed any other find on to my DHD and I was using the stock interface since the start obviously with visionary root.
Also, whichever way I do it, I would loose all my contacts apps or we can avoid that. Can anybody please suggest any good (possibly free) backup app.
Tooo Long to read but any help and replies will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Anyone have any idea when Visionary or another One Click will work on a stock DHD running 2.3.3? I only want to root to get Set Cpu to improve my battery life.
You can trust my word.. Never.

Wow, that's a bold statement in tech lol
Any reason why this build will never be hacked when seemingly every other one is?
Not doubting yr word at all tho lol
Because it uses (as far as we know) pretty much flawless security measures that prevent us from doing much anything. Previously the devs found a way to go around the main security barrier after two months of trying, and now HTC blocked that security hole. As downgrading is possible, there are really not much interests to try and crack the new builds. Especially as it seems like a mission impossible.
....sigh.....
and since downgrading, gold cards etc etc is not my favorite, still waiting for a simple apk "for dummies", I guess I can forget to get to root mine.....
Those guides are really not so hard. Read them a couple of times, and if you still do not get it, ask your friend to do it. You can also join #AndroidRevolution IRC channel, somebody can hold your hand through the process. If I am logged in, make sure to send me a private message in IRC so I notice you.
thanks for the offer! will read again & probaply come back t you for help
Indian Desire HD
Apparently the Indian DHDs running 2.3.3 cannot be downgraded to root.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
You can install seraphic custom Rom if you like its just a stock Rom with stock kernel and root access. I love that Rom, closest to stock you can get on rooted DHDs IMO.
yes, it really sad that to say 2.37 OTA upgrade cannot be downgrade this time, I really want to downgrade or just root it :'(
nothing can do this time
I was running 4.2.2 rooted using rumrunners script. I had supersu installed and voodoo rootkeeper and decided to accept the ota after seeing in rumrunner's thread that people were reporting that it didnt affect root. Well, mine did! I lost root and voodoo doesnt restore it. I tried downloading and rerunning the latest version of the rumrunner script and I get
Code:
Please wait....
Checking for updates......
Test 1: Rebooting into bootloader
Waiting for fastboot (5/120)
Waiting
Test 2: Booting device
Waiting for ADB (17/120)
must ferment longer...
must sanitize, skunky rum is nasty
hold please..............................................
[************************************************************]
Rebooting into bootloader (again)
Waiting for fastboot (5/120)
Waiting for ADB (16/120)
must ferment longer...
chilling..................
bottles are packed, here we go, shhhhhh....
Waiting for device
rom or root issue? unexpected behaviour detected - flash different rom and try again.
ERROR: run rumrunner again.....
The strange thing is that recovery still shows s-off and unlocked. I just can't seem to regain root.
Questions:
1) any ideas on getting the root binary installed?
2) since the phone is still s-off and unlocked, I assume that I could just install maybe the bonestock rom and be done with Verizon - thoughts?
3) worst case - I guess just wait for an updated script from rumrunner?
Thanks in advance!

Rumrunner is mainly for gaining S-off.
S-off is not the same thing as root.
Rumrunner does have a nice added perk, in that it also installs superuser and the su binaries for you.(adds root)
But it is not required for rooting an already s-off device.
Either flash the stock rooted rom, or just flash SuperSu and you will be rooted again.

Thanks. I reflashed the recovery (lost that for some reason) and reflashed the supersu zip. Now I have root back, but I have lost some connectivity. I have web access through the browser and a few programs but not play store, facebook, gmail etc. No idea what happened or how to fix it. btw, it doesnt seem to matter if I use wifi or data, the same programs dont work - almost like a firewall block or something.
