Minor Mods - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I'm looking for a way to change a few things but I haven't seen too many of these mentioned.. I enjoy flashing a new rom but then experience some frustration at what seems like the smallest things.
I would like:
-my phone to "not' beep when I plug in the charger. It really hinders the process of putting a baby to sleep.
-to adjust my in-call volume without first activating the screen, whether hands free or not.
I think Calkulin has both of these built in but I don't care for the stock look.
-to 'display' my contacts by first name and 'sort' them by last name; scroll through the list and 'not' have the first name fade out so that only the last names are visible. I guess this is a Samsung thing but it's annoying.
Any suggestions? Besides telling me that I should adapt or live with it or hold the phone differently so that it isn't inconvenienced?

hacking out the account balance / transaction notification

Hi all,
This is a cool phone and all, but i'm on the verge of returning it because of one completely ridiculous feature: I'm a using Cingular in the US and after any transaction, be it making a call or receiving a text message, I get a notification on the phone letting me know how much it cost and what my account balance is. This would just be a minor irritation if it weren't for the fact that when it does this, it plays the 'notify' sound, at near to full volume, regardless of any of the phone's sound settings.
This essentially makes the phone useless for me a good portion of the time as the only way to shut it up during a meeting or whatever is to power it down completely.
I've tried disabling every windows sound setting i could find, putting it on silent, vibrate, whatever, that notification (appears as a bubble next to the connection strength icon with the heading "Phone") will always play, always full volume. In desperation i tried deleting notify.wav from \Windows through activesync and total commander, but it's write protected and you can't change its attributes. Cingular themselves call it a feature of their prepaid plan and can't disable it despite my railing.
Anyway, if anyone has any ideas that I can use to disable this stupid "feature", registry or otherwise, I'd LOVE to hear it.
Threaten Cingular saying that you let the whole world know that they are not willing to work with customers under any circumstances after the money is in their hands because of your simple request to have them remove a simple unwanted feature.
There are 2 reasons I say this:
1) Since "Cingular themselves call it a feature of their prepaid plan" it will happen regardless of any phone you use from them.
2) PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
(It may not go your way as seen in reason 2 - but at the same time after seeing reason 2 would you buy a motorcycle from that company that resides in Milwaukee WI. or recommend that anybody else you know do the same? )
Well I thought about that, but from cingular it's just a clunky product and second rate customer service, which, you know, happens.. The fact that I can't control the sounds my phone makes is a little more ridiculous. It basically doesn't have a silent mode, and should. So that's what I'm focussing on.

Once again, this is not the fault of the phone but Cingular overriding the settings in their "feature of their prepaid plan".
----
When speaking to them about this do it in a polite mild tone manner.
Here is what I would do:
I would call customer service and ask to speak with their supervisor.
When that person gets on the phone, ask for their supervisor.
Repeat process as many times until you can get no further - each person will be more reluctant to bump you up.
Once you get the highest person you can speak with, they will be more willing to listen to your issues because it has reached them.
Focus on their inability to remove unnecessary features - that cause disruptions during important meetings because of a SMS sent - at the customer's request & poor customer service (that is reason why you wanted to speak with the highest person possible.)
Do not focus on the phone itself because it will happen on all their phones.
Also tell them that you have plenty of friends that are not happy with their current provider and are asking everybody about their provider & calling plans (leave it at that - that is making a threat towards them without actually saying it - let them think it).
If nothing gets resolved, then revert to STEP 2 in my previous post.
Thanks for the advice longhair, I might get to the point of doing that. Right now though I'm more interested in the phone itself - Cingular after all just broadcast crap over the air - it's the phone's decision what to do with those signals, and right now that decision is "torpedo useability with an intrusive and unmodifiable notification noise". I write software, i'm pretty sure that somewhere in this little brick of transistors & code is a way to make for a real silent mode, I just need to figure out how.

By what you are describing, the phone itself is not the problem but the provider - Cingular in this case.
I am using T-Mobile with the same phone and the service is much better than I had with Orange (Cingular's name out here).
Good luck and keep us updated
sorry i can't help with the sound issues - sounds rubbish! ... but you could try putting your phone into flight mode when in meetings etc to save you fully resetting it!! at least until you find a solution to the problem... stick with it!
I used ActiveSync to explore to \windows under 'My Device' and copied notify.wav to my desktop. I then used an audio editor to make it silent and copied it back.
Now when I get the notifications it still plays the notify.wav but it is silent. You could change it to any sound you wanted. The reason you couldn't delete it was that it was read-only.
I didn't try deleting the file itself but I would guess it would work. If not just replace it with a silent wav file...
Yeah that's what I ended up doing. Well actually I created an empty.wav, copied it to the phone, searched the registry for the ref to the notify sound, changed it to point to empty.wav and bob was my uncle.. I had trouble overwriting notify.wav itself due to permissions.
Can anyone post the key to edit to get rid of the notify.wav sound? I have a Cingular ipaq hw6515 and if I edit the only key that has the notify.wav value I still get the same anoying sound. The file is protected by windows, so I cant delete or edit it to make it silent. I just called Cingular and they say its a feature and there is no way to turn it off.....Thanks
i THINK the key was 'InCallBuzz' from memory but I don't remember where it was.
Humm, I had changed it and it didnt do anything. I will delete some of the keys to see whats gonna happen. Im crossing my fingers.... thanks for the tip anyway
didnt do anything, even after a soft reboot.... must be a Cingular custom setting....
keep in mind that if you change the InCallBuzz.Sound key to something completely bogus (or delete it), your phone will play some default sound anyway. That's why I had to change it to 'empty.wav' and make sure there was an empty.wav on the phone.
Dudes, thanks for all your help. I went back to XP rather than Vista, and the XP explorer allowed me to change the notify.wav file. Now I have a silent file instead of the original and it works perfectly.
I guess Vista is less permissive than XP.
Again, thanks for all your help.
Interesting that Vista turned out to be the difference...
For those without access to XP, I wrote an installer cab to do the replace.
It should replace the notify.wav with a silent one then ask you to reboot the device. I tested it out on my HTC Wizard and it works. Really the only work it is doing is copying one file so it should just work but you never know...

Does anyone know of any register hack to remove the notification balloon as well?
Suppressing the notification message

Something is not right ... !!!
I have the same phone, and the same service, and the same bloody horrible notification messages everytime I so much as look at my handset - it tells me that did not cost anything and my balance is ...
However, something is not right with your handset because I can control the volume of the notify message when it arrives - it plays at whatever volume my handset is set to.
Sorry I can't tell you why, I am not very technical, but I thought you might like to know it should not play at full volume.
As a second matter of interest, I have also been talking to Cingular about turning the bloody message thing off.
I did not have to change the notify sound to an empty wav. Just did the reg edit to kill the bubble (linked to above) and it killed the sound as well. Also, worth mentioning is the cab file (above) cannot be un-installed if you decide you want your sound back for any reason so you'd need to manually undo what it does.
I mention this because I was having trouble with something on my phone keeping my phone awake after the notification (sound & bubble) popped up. After the reg edit, the notification still gets sent to your phone and, if it's in standby, wakes it up. You just won't hear the sound or see the bubble. Without the sound, I quickly realized I did not know my phone was sitting in my pocket with the backlight on. I needed my sound back! No big deal really, but should be noted so there are no surprises.
I finally found the program keeping my phone awake after the notification was port splitter. So, I changed some settings and put back the reg edit. Now I have no balloon and no sound when the notification arrives. When Cingular sends it to my phone, it lights up full for 30 seconds then dims then goes completely dark into standby mode.
Hurray! I hated that "feature" even though I could control it's loudness by lowering the whole phone's volume. I also hated OK-ing out of the bubble all the time. Thanks sdkevin for the simple reg edit that killed two birds with one stone!

SMS vibration, default action, call vibration...

Hiya.
Im using my TP2 for two month and Im really satisfied with this phone (as I did with TyTnII (thanks for tab and ok keys there ;-).
But few things bother me so Im trying to ask here:
1) Default action in email is reply all. Is it possible to change it to reply?
2) incomming SMS have long vibration time. Where can I to make it shorter?
3) When Im calling someone and he pick it up, it vibrate. But too short, can it be longer?
4) there is possible to set phone to switch to external microphone when its faced down. But in spite of the fact that I have it checked, it doesnt work :-(
5) row, where is battery, time and notification pole is everything extept battery notification filed. It means that anywhere I click Notifications is opened. What bother me the most is, that there is for example new email and when I click on it nothing happened ;-(. Rhodium Pack should solve this problem, but its not avaible anymore because of some licence problem.
6) I was always using another than original rom. In TP1 I was using song recognize program, TCPMP, etc. Can someone give me advice, what ROM is now the best? What ROMs are you using and why? Can someone explain me what are shortcuts in the names (WWE etc)? Im in Western Europe, but why its so important?
Thanks a lot!!
John
I don't know the answers to everything, but I know that there are places in the registry that can be removed (named OutlookEnhancement) to remove the reply all. Here is one area to look:
[HKLM\Services\OutlookEnhancement]
"DLL"="OutlookEnhancement.dll"
Remove the OutlookEnhancement.dll field. I'm sure if you searched for something like remove reply all, you will find hits on it explaining how to do it.
I've seen the long vibrate on text, and haven't felt the need to change it but every now and then a bug happens where it vibrates REALLY long, like over a minute, and then I just hit a button to stop it.
I've never seen a Vibrate on Connect modification to let it vibrate longer.
Mine usually switches to external mic when I flip it upside down. I've had it not to it once or twice. Does your G-Sensor work in applications? Maybe Calibrate it? And try it on a level non moving surface (like a table).
WWE means World Wide English. Best ROM questions usually go unanswered here. Everyone's preferences for a favorite rom are different. Line up and sample the Chef's selections and see which one tastes best to you

[Q] Power Off Shutdown Sound Is Missing

Since upgrading to a Froyo based ROM, I noticed that my DINC no longer responds with an audible alert, when shutting down. It does issue a vibration. My memory, tells me it did sound a notification when powering down under the stock v2.1 ROM. I searched all the setup and settings menus, but cannot find anything that controls such an alert, when shutting down. I do have a fully functioning bootanimation and startup mp3 of my own. I am happy with startup animation and sound. I also remember, under the HTC stock ROM v2.1, that whenever the USB cable was either attached or disconnected, that I also received an audible alert, or notification. Now, the phone is silent when I connect or disconnect the USB cable. Is there an app or widget or system file that controls this alert. Note, I did check-off the box for Sounds/Notifications/SD card in the settings menu. It makes no difference.
To update my research, I created a Google search on "Froyo shutdown sound". There were many hits across the Froyo/Droid spectrum. Apparently, the Froyo users believe that the Froyo update has removed the notifications that were generated during USB cable activity and during phone shutdown. Many people seemed to be very glad that these "annoying" notifications were removed. Others, like me, missed hearing when the phone randomly booted while tucked neatly away in a pocket or on a counter top. I am glad that I still had the opportunity to use my own power on mp3 notification. I wish I also had the opportunity to exercise choice for these other two items, as well, oh well. Mostly, I regret having had to spend about three (3) hours doing internet search, upon search, to figure out if I was suffering from some self inflicted anomaly. It might have been nice to know, in fact, that there was an official Froyo change log that I could have consulted. All I have is conjecture and nothing is sourced to official material. Sorry for the rant.

A-Button Glitch

I've found myself back here on the forums after getting frustrated with the official Windows updates.
There's a really big glitch I've encountered that changes the volume from Normal to Vibrate or vice versa.
It took me years to finally realize why my phone was switching profiles without me changing it.
Whenever I start a new text message and type the letter 'A' too fast as the first letter of the message it changes to Normal/Vibrate. If I slowly start typing the message, the glitch is avoided.
Has anyone else encountered this bizarre problem? I'm still trying to figure out how this could even be possible! Any suggestions from the gurus?
This problem exists on ALL Roms I believe ... I have always had it.
Here is the explanation, as I see it:
The Texting program, in all honesty, sucks. Windows decided to create the TextBox before loading up the history of messages, which meant there was a huge lag. FURTHER: They didn't do these actions on separate threads, which means the lag would occur on one thread.
Now think of it this way: While a program can have different 'threads' to run on, the keyboard, while an input to the program, will get its own thread because it is a system device. So the Keyboard gets its own thread, therefore its own buffer.
What goes on, in the second it takes to load the text message history is this:
1) TextBox appears and is activated to user [and Keyboard]
2) History load starts on same thread as TextBox
3) User types "A"
4) "A" is sent to the foreground window, which is the TextBox
5) The TextBox takes a while to respond, to process the message, therefore the system assumes the key was held down for X seconds.
6) Realizing this is the Hard-coded "change-profile" shortcut, the system then sends a message to the Profile 'manager' (if one exists, but in theory let us say it does) to switch profiles.
7) The TextBox stops lagging since the history is loaded, and it registers that the 'A' key was lifted.
The whole issue has to do with timing and buffers ... all pretty stupid errors on Microsoft's part.
I had wanted to start making a replacement, but alas, I have no time
One day....maybe one day
Brilliant Cyclone! Thanks for the simplified/understandable response.
I didn't realize the quick button to switch profiles is the 'A' button. That's much more understandable.
I just updated my phone to 3v0, but then downdated to 1.22.531.6 because it 3v0 was too buggy.
It cleared all my text messages and I haven't had the A-glitch yet. I'm guessing clearing the text history is the only way to avoid the glitch.
I'm surprised I haven't heard other people talking about this problem. I Googled it, but couldn't find anything.
Very interesting...although, these kind of problems are expected when dealing with Microsoft.
I just had a thought...
How easy would it be to change the "Hard-coded "change-profile" shortcut" to a letter that is never used? Like 'Q'. Or completely remove the change-profile shortcut.
You guys are way over my head when it comes to working with the fundamentals of phones(the registry?) like this. I'd like to learn more, but I must also say....One day....maybe one day!
I don't honestly believe it is possible..."hard coded' means that they programmed it straight into the OS.
Now realize, this is only my theory, I can be 100% incorrect..
The OS can't have any changes made to it? I thought this was possible through something like "regedit" on PC's. Changes to the registry aren't changes to the OS?

Things in the Registry aren't 'hardcoded' ... when I say 'hardcoded' I mean that when Microsoft employees was in their IDEs developing, they typed in a few lines of code dealing with the A-Key, and then compiled it. We cannot change that, especially since it is part of the ROM.

Android P means what, Android Pain (in the arse)?

I don't try Beta releases, but I tried the P anyway, mostly because of the new UI design and stuffs, but I couldn't stay on it for like 30 mins even.
Firstly, and I don't know whether it will be brought back or not, you now have to swipe down from notification bar area twice to access Settings menu! I mean WTF!
Secondly and the most annoying and inconvenient thing, now you can't increase or decrease the Ringer with the volume buttons. No matter what you do Volume buttons now will only control the Media volume! I mean WTAF! I use the Ringtone volume at least 10 times than the damned Media volume! To increase or decrease the Ringtone you now have to click on that tiny Settings icon and then increase the ringer or decrease, and while you do that, your ringtone will be played for a brief period of time, unlike the older method, where you could just slide left or right to decrease or increase from any screen and it will never play the ringtones in the process!
Really? No one goes to any business meetings or something? Now you gotta alert them hey look I am controlling my phone's ringer! What the actual **** Google?
I used it for like 15 mins before coming back to Oreo, but if these changes are made fundamentally then its a big pile of ****.
Oh, and that swipe up from home button, I mean please Google, really? Worst implementation of gesture based navigation one could ever think of! Either gestures should be done from full screen or go back to old nav bar or just GTFO!
Every Android update now seems to think how to make users spend more time in trying to do the simple things, it's baffling how inconvenient the experience is becoming. Remember in Nougat we actually had double tap to lock screen and then swipe to unlock? Never had to press the power button, ever. Now with Oreo they got rid of that, quad tap was introduced and now with P these even more stupid things are here.
Is it time? I mean to go back to dumb-phones or something?

Definitely all you.
1. You've got me with the settings, but I don't usually get to settings through there, so for me, I could care less.
2. Umm, how about you, ya know, put your phone on silent BEFORE you go into the meeting? 90% of the time I touch the volume buttons, it's for media. My ringer is either on, off, or vibrate. I very rarely set it to a lower volume. When I'm in a business meeting, I'm there for business. I don't need my phone to go off, even low.
3. I like the gesture nav, so you've lost me on that one as well.
If you don't like it, I'm sure you'll have other manufacturers who still include the regular nav bar. Doubt Android will completely take it away, at least for the foreseeable future. Maybe on Pixel devices, but they won't enforce that globally. Android is changing. It's been changing. You either change to keep up with times, or you try to trailblaze. I've had Android since the g1 .. trust me, you learn to take the good with the bad. At least in the preview the gestures are an option. The double tap does annoy me a bit, but at the end of the day ... It's a phone. It will take me less than a second to tap two more times, and go about my life. There is no reason to be raging this hard. Nobody is forcing you to update

You are one of a very small number of people. Most people have been asking for Google to make this change for years, because almost nobody changes their ringer volume. If you need to silence your phone, why not use the "Do Not Disturb" quick tile, instead of changing your ringer volume?
This is actually the one change I am most excited for with Android P, because it was one of the reasons I used to use Lineage.
Omg! This stupidly accepting mentality is the reason why Google will not be bothering to consider bringing back the practical, convenient options any more!
I mean jeez! Time is obviously of no importance to the people who can adapt with time wasting method rather than time saving ones! Like double tapping to quad tapping. Like going into sound option and then get the option for changing ringer volume, rather than just hitting volume buttons! Also it's so aesthetically displeasing. Every time you wanna change the ringer you'll hear the ringtone, RoFL.

Are you a child? Honestly, you sound stupid. Times change. Go back to another manufacturer, as I'm sure there are those who will do things differently. If you think quad tapping is going to take years off your life, you must be expecting to live for a mighty long time. It's not that huge a deal. You're making a mountain of an anthill. To change my ringer, I simply press the volume button, then click the icon for silent, audible, or vibrate. I don't change my ringer volume 10+ times a day. Most of the people who have been asking for YEARS don't. We get it, you want to go back to nougat forever. Then do so, and shut up. Honestly. Every single time Google changes something people complain. They aren't forcing you to use Android. If you don't like it, there are alternatives, or you can learn to program yourself and make your own. Year after year you people belly ache over a FREE operating system. My time is very valuable, which is why I don't spend so much time on it to need to change volume 10+ times a day, or worry about having to quad tap the few times I actually need the phone. When I pull it out of my pocket, it lights up. Double tap. I'm not glued to my device. Also, I don't think it's aesthetically displeasing. I enjoy it. I also prefer German cars over Japanese. I think the Audi rs4 looks better than the Mitsubishi Eclipse. I like vanilla instead of chocolate. The world is full of different flavors than just what YOU want, and you'll get further in life the less you complain because things aren't going your way, and start enjoying what you have. Calm the **** down. My complaint is against Google, not you. Though I have seen Google shills before, so nothing new.
If your time is as valuable as you claim it is, then you would not have preferred more time consuming thing, period, simply confirms you're just another Google shill, or just someone needing medical care.
I didn't ask you to say anything here, you came yourself, because you were pissed off simply because I pointed out facts of Google's idiosyncratic choices. Simply bugger off if you think topic is stupid, I for one not giving the slightest damn about it anyway.

Ringer on/off is power button + volume down.
really dude?
It's pretty quick to turn off the ringer... Hit the volume control then touch the bell on top of the volume slider.

I'm gonna suggest you are the one needing to calm down here.
I'm on P.
Now I'm getting used to how it's working, I'm liking it.
Still needs some tweaks, and you can turn off gestures if it's really causing you sleepless nights

No, i was calm. Just because i made one forum post seemed to look like i was raging, it has no relation with my personal life.
Like i said, I'm not the accepting lot, I'll never support this stupid ass decision of Google. And I'll die before becoming a shill. If you like it, good for you, the shills, not saying you are, mostly like whatever Google brings about without even giving it a personal thought, good for them, well not really but whatever.
You understand that the P Beta is not the final release and that Google actually throws stuff out there that they aren't 100% sure about just to get public feedback on it, right? P isn't perfect.. It crashes apps fairly often... But... you know... it's in Beta... If you don't want to deal with some things that aren't quite polished yet, don't participate in the Beta testing.

If you like it, good for you, the shills, not saying you are, mostly like whatever Google brings about without even giving it a personal thought, good for them, well not really but whatever.

If this is your "calm", I suggest there are deeper issues you might want to look into. "I'll never support this stupid ass decision of google. And I'll die before becoming a shill"
ISSUES!!!
Also, for the record, that ISN'T calm. That's wound up over something
As stated above, this is Beta, and this is a testing environment. Maybe this environment isn't best for someone who doesn't like change?
For me, P has been great. Especially battery life.
I love how everything you hate is everything I love on P and why I'm never going back. I was just thinking who adjusts their ringer volume a few weeks back, guess I found the 1 person.

Yeah ROFL, ISSUES, I mean yeah, with you lots. Someone who found issues with me preferring death than a Google shill definitely is the one with the issue.
Something should be be tried to fixed if it's not broken, old saying, but **** that yeah, those who don't understand who need to change their ringtone volume often obviously never went to office or meetings, otherwise this would not have been even needed to think as to the reasoning, FFS, damned 16 year old kids, what would they know about phone calls at first place, sorry my fault.
I sincerely hope Google will revert to old method, because it's simply changing how mobile phones should work, the very fundamental thing, and even for a beta they shouldn't have done that and apologise for the same.

They won't revert to the old method. They made it clear that this is their plan and its the number one request they had from users. You can revert back and just avoid updates or try lineageos if you prefer that method and make changes on your own. Most of us in an office environment walk in and turn on vibrate mode. I can tell you none of the people on my floor operate by turning down the volume. We all go into meetings and if the sound went off in the customer meeting even at low volumes we would be kicked out of the meetings. I travel 2-3 times a month and I've never been in a customer meeting where they left their phone on at low volumes. Again, its up to you to live your life how you want, but I recommend not assuming we aren't going through the same things. Anyhow, why don't you try switching methods? try the silent mode vs the low ringer. Is there a particular reason you don't like it on vibrate mode? Some of these things can be changed via apps as well. For instance, Tasker can automate your volume adjustment based on events and location if you want.

Oh dear lord, I hate any type of ringing at all, back in the days when mobile phones were still thick as brick I never used anything other than vibrate mode, but nowadays these slim phones can't be felt vibrating inside pockets, so you must have the ringtone enabled. Anyway, that's not the point. A low sounded ringtone is still a ringtone, which you can hear, however faint but enough to reach your ears and at the same time not disturbing others, and for you to not miss a call, but vibration can missed if you are a bit distanced from your desk.
If ringtones were meant to stay at a static level, then there would not have been different volume levels at all! And how funny could something be when you can't control your mobile phone's ringtone with your volume rocker. I don't know which sort of users requested this, and I don't know to depth of daftness got into Google to approve a dreadful request like that. I am still more than confident that this will be reverted though. Stupidity lasts not longer.

you might look at getting push bullet if you can't hear the phone vibrating like a jackhammer on your desk. Just a thought.

Yeah
Google needs to revert back because of 1 person.
gonna happen.
when you say you'd rather die than be a shill (who uses "shill" this millenia?!) - then you need to put the tech down. walk away, look at some tranquil scenery
