Root with Jellybean? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

The awesome Koush has jb available through cwm, but doesn't come with root. How hard would it be to get su working on this? Does it just need super user apk update like when ice came out?

Look around someone has posted the SuperSU.zip for it on the forums. Can't remember where off the top of my head... use the search

Hey!
Just install http://www.mediafire.com/?ke2cnhlo09xh6v4 in CWM, then JB is rooted!

OTA

So I know the rule about never accepting otas but I was asked a question and couldn't remember. So if I accept an ota will it brick my phone or will it just update and unroot?

depends on what you did to your phone with root access.
are you on stock? ROM?
Yea stock rom just rooted

Well if you are on stock and you rooted, you will most likely lose your root (although some posts around here say that root aces is preserved during update in some rare cases).
If you are on a custom rom (e.g. if you installed an update using a custom recovery) and you are updating to a stock update then you will be likely screwing your phones system. depending on where you messed (or let a programmer mess using custom recovery or Rom managers) you could be bricking your phone as well since there are updates for boot and recovery in the stock updates to 4.0.2 and 4.0.4 (I don't count 4.0.3 since google pulled it off their site).
If you want a stock version of the newest android for your GN make it a manual patch by following this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1391881 make sure you do flash the boot, recovery and radio as well...
But before you do that check in with the forum thread or website were you got your custom rom or root method and ask them for advice, Yeah do that! It's the safest way to do something when you know how others got to the point where you wanna go!
Thx alot

Please let us know how things worked out for you.
Hint: after following the steps above you are on the official google builds. Nice thing about that is you get new android versions as updates on the very second they are released. And most things that come with root are already available in the unrooted system (except overclocking) so why bother about root and stuff when you as a non-developing user can acces more priveleges on stock while rom builders for other phones try to keep up with YOUR system?

I'm completely stock right now just a rooted 4.0.2 I will probably stay like this until cm9 becomes stable or AokP next milestone comes out because he current one did not agree with my phone at all

If you still have CWM installed, then just download this and flash it in CWM. Done.

How to...?

Hi all, this is in reference to the sprint galaxy nexus. I am rooted running the stock 4.0.4 and I keep getting the prompt to restart and install the update sprint just pushed out. My question is, how do I get rid of that prompt and get the benefits of that update? Should I unroot and accept the ota then root again? Or should I stay rooted and accept the ota (I'm assuming I'll lose root) and then re-root?
Thanks in advance.

If you want the benefits of the update, you need to update. Can't just magically get rid of that prompt.
So, if you have everything stock, update.
If you want, unroot your phone, update, root again.
If you don't, keep it rooted, update, if you lose root - root again.

Accept the update. When the update is downloaded it should be placed as a zip file in cache folder. If you have Stock Recovery, nothing else is needed, it will install it, but it will unroot you. If you have CWM installed you can apply zip update from browsing into it. Immediately following the update you should re-install superuser so that your device remains rooted after the reboot.
Otherwise you will need to flash the recovery back to stock, apply the update which will take away your root, and root your phone again.

The real question is, are there benefits to receiving that OTA?? If I'm not mistaken it is still ICS with search borked to appease the Almighty Owners of All Things Rectangular. Be better off flashing a JB ROM (Project Butter really is amazing) and flashing the FG01 radios. Both of which can be found in the Sprint Development section.

Sorry, Project Butter is not a ROM. It was Google's initiative to completely remove lag from Android starting with JB. And it really was effective. Personally, I'm using Paranoid Android ROM but there are many good JB choices. Dreamsforgotten and Shabby's ROM I think is probably the closest to stock JB.

my galaxy nexus is asking for update.. how can i keep my root

i'm running 4.1.
and since a few days ago, my nexus is saying the update is ready and i should update.. i guess it's 4.2?
anyway, last time i updated like this, i lost my root..
so what's the easiest way to accept this system update but still keep my root?
The easiest way is just to flash a rooted stock 4.2 ROM. I don't know why people are so dependent on OTA when they're XDA members...

Install an ap called "OTA rootkeeper" by Voodoo, run it and give it root permissions.
Then it'll do what it says (I last used it on a GN about the 4.0.1 update, should still work though).
I tried this process earlier today, i mean, JOP40C -> JOP40D through OTA, worked fine..
Rooted it in like 1 min. Still got the stock recovery on too. To an unlocked user, i don't see the point of protecting root with app X or Y.

Make sure you have a unlocked bootloader, the rest is non-issue.....

this..
agree with others just flash a rom which is 4.2 there are a few in the developers section which are pure 4.2 or look at rasbeanjelly which is pure 4.2 with a few nice tweaks.
The custom roms are often ahead of the google ones they had the date fixed in the contacts app before google pushed a fix

[Q] New to the SII, have a question about rooting

Hi everyone,
My HTC Sensation went to hell and my friend from T-Mobile had a brand new SII around so he gave it to me. I know the Sensation inside and out but have no knowledge of the SII so I was hoping someone could point me to a thread that will tell me how to root on my specific baseband.
Model: SGH-T989
Android Version: 4.0.4
Baseband: T989UVLI1
Kernel: 3.0.8
Build: IMM76D.UVLI1
I tried searching "root UVLI1" and "root T989UVLI1" but only found someone saying they don't see why it won't root. Nothing concrete like "You can definitely root by following XXXXX's post."
Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

I use galaxy s ii toolbox to root mine from the dev section. Basically get everything installed and follow the prompts. You flash the recovery through oden, sideload root.zip then flash that in CWM recovery.
You need Odin to root. Very easy to do. Go to galaxy2root.com. You flash your custom recovery thru Odin. Then you flash Supersu via your new recovery. The site gives you step by step instructions

This was the only guide I found with working links. And if you have any questions just ask...I've had both devices and this one really is a lot easier to root and unroot, actually almost the same process. This phone is easy once you do it so here you go http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2195283
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
Okay, so you have all personally used the Odin recovery with UVLI1 baseband? I just don't want to use the method on a newer baseband and have problems.
EDIT: And thank you for the responses!
EDIT 2: Actually, I'll just try it out. I feel like I'm starting to be a hassle. I apologize.
If your running Jelly Bean the instructions will state which recovery to use. If you are unsure just Google "how to root T-Mobile Galaxy s2 via Odin".
And yes....I have used Odin many times to root my phone and my friends.
Let us know when ya get rooted. Plenty of good ROMs for the S2.

yep I did that, went to galaxy2root.com and I rooted my gs2 without problems, yes the site gives you everything just make sure to pick your right device
Rooted!
Thanks everyone! I truly appreciate all of you taking the time to answer my questions!
The website was actually galaxys2root.com (with an 's', in case someone else reads this thread in need of help) and the process went smoothly--far smoother than when rooting the Sensation. I don't think I'll ever purchase an HTC phone again.
Now time to check out some ROMs!!!
P.S. My join date is November 2011. When I try to edit, I get a message that says I have to wait five minutes and "All new user accounts will be verified by moderators before this restriction is removed." How long does it take before they verify my account? It's been about 15-16 months lol.
Not a problem. Glad you got rooted with no problems.
If you like TW Jelly Bean ROMs you need to see Jedi Jelly. Very nice rom.
