Hi guys, any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.
Last week I plugged my touch pro 2 in to charge. The phone was on and working fine, but the charging light would not come on.
So HTC collected my phone for repair...
Today I phoned to get the latest information and they want £160 to replace the motherboard or £11 to have the phone returned to be unrepaired. Apparently I have been running an illegal firmware and this has voided my warranty. I updated by firmware many times before settling on the one I was happy with, but it seems the one I settled with wasn't the official one. The guy quoted me SPL - 0.85.0-x.......... and said that it was a bit weird but that was why I had to pay.
So I told him that the firmware had been running fine for many months and I wanted to know the exact registry tweak that had broken the motherboard. Anyway I said I didnt accept that the firmware had anything to do with the hardware failure and would be refusing to pay.. I also gave them the sob story that I have had a new HTC phone every year for the past 7 years and have recommended many customers to them.
Where do I stand with this? I have threatened to go to the small claims court, but really just want my phone fixed for free as soon as possible.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated..

Honestly you asked for this. You are going to have to pay for the repair. You sent in a phone with a cracked ROM and expect them to fix anything? No way in hell will they do it for free.
when you say a cracked rom do you just mean a rom that is available on this forum?
I accept that it isn't an official rom. but it is unrelated to the issue of a phone not charging.
Unfortunately this is the norm... They can't prove your cooked ROM caused it, you can't prove it didn't. What they can prove is that you are not running the ROM they gave you and I'm sure somewhere in the T&C there's legalese about that voiding the warranty.
COULD someone write a program which interferes with charging? I'd bet so, people around here write some amazing stuff. This is not to make any accusations that someone has written any malicious code, simply that it COULD likely be done, therefore I seriously doubt you have much recourse. You could get lucky, but I suspect you're just hosed.. Sucks.
And in reality, you could send the phone in for ANY failure and they discover such things and void the warranty.
I guess you could buy extra/larger batteries and charge them in a charger and swap them as they die. Not the best solution, but at least you don't have to shell out lots of money.
well i've just sent a very professional email to customer services.
tweiss 3, you have a very negative outlook. HTC market their phones on being individual, and indeed this is why so many of us buy them over Iphones. However I took the individuality to the limit by installing a custom firmware. I am extremely confident that a ROM from this forum and a respected chef at that, would not include a registry hack that has any effect upon the charging system of the phone. And have asked them for the evidence that this is the cause of the hardware malfunction.

Take them to court. The whole thing rediculous. Depending on your country this might actually be illegal.
I lawyered up when they tried to pull this on me, and guess who got his phone back fixed for free?
Its not that i'm negative, but there are 2 things everyone should know about warranty electronic work.
1) Always go back to stock. Will this cause you to loose all your data and settings, yes, but that leads me into step 2.
2) It is never a guarantee to come back with the settings or OS the way you sent it out. In fact, most companies have a policy of the first step being just reflash/reinstall the OS to stock default out of the box settings to see if that fixes the problems. So knowing this, spend the few extra minutes to reflash back to stock.
That being said, you could possibly win in a court to get it warrantied, but you are only going to screw yourself out of a lot of money and time. HTC knows this and will let you waste it if you really feel the need to. Their warranties are written very well, with a lot of fine print. Also most of them say "Limited" meaning almost they have all the discretion the care to use.
I agree with tweiss3. You can't send HTC a phone with a modified ROM and expect them to fix it. I'm sure these SOB's will do anything possible to get out of fixing your phone. Once they saw that you had a different SPL that was the red flag they needed to void the warranty. I hope you can convince them to fix your phone. Maybe if you were very persistent and demanded to speak to several managers, told them how you and your friends all own HTC product, inform them you will no longer buy their products and possibly take them to court, etc.
With all this in mind I'm even more hesitant to flash my phone to a modified ROM.
I kind of expect it, to be honest. As soon as they see anything not stock, they can void the warranty. Just like with a car with the manufacturer's warranty. You modify it and something breaks, and they will attempt to void the entire warranty regardless of if it caused the problem or not. When I send my car in for warranty work, I take all of the mods off and put it back to the stock parts (the air intake, etc).
It's a crappy deal, I know. But it's something you should plan for if you ever need warranty work done.

Its just a rule of thumb when it comes to warranty repair with electronics, always restore stock first!!! As soon as HTC discovered that your phone software was modified, it's no longer an issue to them of what caused the problem with your phone, it is now an issue of this phone is no longer under warranty because of the physical proof of the software tamperment! honestly it would be by the grace of god if they were to reinstate the warranty!

Dude, I totally know what you're going through. I hacked the ECU on my car, and now Mazda won't honor the warranty on my engine. It's total bull...I mean, I should be able to customize it how I want with no repercussions for myself. Why should I have to take the financial hit just because I put on a different software that controls the entire thing that may or may not have screwed it up?
If you couldn't tell, I was being sarcastic. You changed the core controlling software and didn't bother to change it back to the stock one. They have no responsibility to repair it for you.

I honestly wish you luck. Other readers seeking warranty repair should save themselves the risk and the effort and think positively about returning the phone to stock prior to sending it in.

Eh? Obviously if you can't flash it back, you're stuck. Other posters might not have been as hard on you if they had known the phone couldn't be flashed.
Now you know what needs doing I bet you can find someone to do it for less. Worth a look.
Also worth asking for it back and re-flashing and returning to see how their records work.
Do they really have a database of products they don't want to work with or do they just look at the serial, look at the device and decide ? Only one way to find out ! For £11 it might be worth the gamble.

I don't think he ever said they fixed it without asking him. They gave him two options:
1) Fix it
2) Return it without repairing it
Unless I missed a post somewhere, he never chose to fix it. In fact, I don't even think he chose to take it back yet.
Just an update... They decided not to replace it for free, and still ask for £160.
You guys are quite right I should have restored it to factory before sending it back. It was sent to HTC running the official upgraded rom so I thought it would be fine, however I had forgotten that it would still be unlocked for unofficial roms and they would check this.
Even if I had remembered it wouldn't have been possible because the phone usb connection was not working..
dik23 thank you for your suggestion! Is there anyway of restoring the spl and all of the phone to stock settings without a usb connection? e.g. micro sd? or wifi?
I think i'm going to ask for the phone back for £11.. However the £11 fee is for an assesment, so there is a chance they will pick up. However I believe having the phone in perfect working condition would give me a stronger standing.
did you ever try a different USB cable? that would be my first thought after it broke....
also, do you have phone insurance? if so, is there any chance in the future it could be "stolen" under the insurance policy, and at worst you would get a working refurb?
I don't have phone insurance but it might be worth while getting it soon incase of any future loss ;-)

Even setting morality aside (which you shouldn't), reporting a phone as having been stolen shortly after having a warranty claim rejected is maybe not the smartest move.
i cant believe people from the US are telling you youre in the wrong. idunno about other countries, including the one you're at, but here in the US warranties are made to protect the CONSUMER not the big company. "minidevil"s comparison about a car manufacturer having the right to void your warranty is so wrong its unbelievable. so called "shrinkwrap warranties" arent even legal here in the US. i had a yamaha R1 which i used as a track bike. regardless of what the warranty said or what the dealership try to claim the minute i lawyered up they fixed my bike. simply because they knew what they hoped i didnt. that warranty laws are here to protect me not them. i didnt have to prove that the racing mods didnt fry my clutch hub. THEY had to prove it did. and like it has been said, you cant prove one way or another. here in the US i couldve asked for costs of repairing my bike and court costs for suing them. they knew this and just fixed my bike. again, idunno the laws in your country. its VERY likely youll win in a court, though. but wether or not your court system allows you to also recoup loss monies for court costs from HTC, i dont know.. it may just be cheaper to pay for the repairs.
I bought my TouchPro2 through Mobile Phones Direct.co.uk, back in June '09. Just recently it started giving me problems with the ExtUSB. Have to fiddle with it just to make it take a charge, and I've given up trying to get to to connect to PC via USB.
Today it has got to the point where sliding the screen up or down too fast turns the phone off. Then I have to press power button to turn it on again.
I understand HTC supply a 24 month warranty. At least that's what my warranty card leaflet says. I already check the water indicators on the bottom of battery and next to MicroSD slot, they are both good (white with red crosshatchings.)
I have two concerns thought.
1) Is there a way for me to confirm that the Rom/SPL etc that I am using are the official ones that won't validate my warranty. I am pretty sure I never did any modding to this phone, only to my old Kaiser. But to be sure I would like to double check. ANy advice on how to do this?
2) My major worry is that my phone has loads of scratches on the screen, on the corners where paint is chipped. The battery cover is in a bad way too, the top left corner has a small crack and the metal strip in the middle of it has broken off around the camera lens.
So I am worried that HTC will tell me that whatever my problems are are because of normal wear and tear and therefore wont fix my phone. The thing is though all these problems are merely aesthetic which is why they never bothered me too much (at least once the first scratch is out the way anyway). My phone worked fine for ages despite these superficial defects (I never used a screen protector or case, phone used to go in my pocket along with coins, keys etc., and of course it did sustain the occasional drop).
Can anyone advise me as to whether this will be a problem? If HTC refused to fix/replace it then I would rather not send it in, to avoid the fee for returning it.
P.S. Also I don't know if I still have the paper invoice to prove purchase, will the emailed invoice be proof of purchase if I can't find the paper copy?
Oh yeh and finally, I don't have any insurance, so I am completely dependent on this warranty being honoured.l
I returned my Pro2 to the UK centre earlier this year. They don't need proof of purchase believe it or not, they never asked me once for mine, however, the electronic one will be fine as say you bought it on eBay, you wouldn't have a paper copy necessarily.
Also, I was using using a different stylus, had many programs like HD Walls and REStart and so on packed in there. Changed the home screen, even edited the files in the Windows directory that mailla used, altering them to say "Kev's Messages" and so on, and they never said a thing to me. My reason for returning is that the hard keys weren't working, they repaired it and flashed a new ROM on it and they never once had an issue with the "state" (if you will) that my Pro2 was in. Also I had many scratches on the battery pack and so on so I think you'll be fine! I hope this helps!

In the mean time if anyone has any other advice than please let me know before I arrange for it to be sent in tomorrow.

arguing on phone to some dude now.
they originally sent me email saying device wasnt in warranty choose 1 of 3 options
1) pay 160ish £ to repair device
2) pay 20 to have device returned to me
3) allow htc to dispose of device
obviously didnt want to choose any of the 3 options, so i rang htc. spoke to someone who repeated options to me, saying if i did nothing then my device would be disposed of. I said i want to escalate matter, he told me theres no point, they'll tell me the same thing. I said i want to escalate anwyay, he told me to fill out service escalation form from htc website. found this at http://www.htc.com/uk/serviceescalation.aspx (even though its not linked to, anywhere in uk htc site)
filled that out on 6/10/10. never got any reply or anything. last friday 22/10/10 i got another email asking which option of the 3 i wanted to choose. rang htc back, told em how come no ones replied to my service escalation form, first person told me that the guy i originally spoke to (6/10/10) WAS the guy who escalated the issue, i was like WTF?? she said hang on, passed me to someone else, who said it had been escalated , i just didnt get the reply, but that he had in writing from the people who the matter was escalated to, that phone wont be fixed under warranty, i started complainign, saying i filled out the escalation form because i wanted to speak to someone who was higher up, and that i gave my contact details so i expected a reply FROM THEM. He then said he'd let me speak to his superior, which i did, and that guy repeated the same, first saying what form did i fill out, calaiming theres only customer care form on the website, but i told him original guy i spoke to told me to fill out the service escalation form, which i found (only by googling and guessing url).
I told him check the phone convo which should have been recorded, and he would see that i was advised to fill out SERVICE ESCALATION form from HTC website, which i did. he said he will check photos to see if the visual damage is minor enough that they will continue to repair anyway, (i doubt it , coz it had one pretty deep scratch in the screen, and back battery cover was cracked in corner). He also said he'll get original guy who i told me to fill out esclation form to call me back tomorrow.
I think theyre lying, noone seems to have done anythign about my escalation form. They say that the matter was escalated and that they have it back, in writing, that phone is not under warranty, but then why didnt anyone tell me anyof this, i wasn't contacted despite leaving contact info in contact fields of escalation form.
GRRRR, i knew this would happen, any excuse to get out of fixing the damn thing, i keep saying that im not bothered about the aesthetic damage (scratched screen, small crack in battery cover) since my phone worked fine for ages WITH these problems. i want them to fix the fact that my phones extUSB connector has gone dodgy, and that phones turns off, when i slide it open.

BEWARE unless guaranteed in writing they will flash the device with the latest win 6.5 rom and you will lose everything.
Even if they agree not to touch it, still often hard reset!
I'm fighting them for a LOT of compensation - for time, ignoring written instructions and £80 of telephone calls. Wil sue them if don't get anywhere this week.

None of those things violate the warranty. Just hard resetting clears all of those. HardSPL and flashing a custom ROM violate the warranty.

I had some research yesterday, yet I still can't find a proper answer to most of my questions about the following subject. Hoping some of the experts here can contribute some of their knowledge and hopefully I will edit this thread to a guide, or at least spare others the need for wondering around the web as I did.
Well, Few days ago I turned off my phone, and it wont turn on or response to any physical key combination, usb connection (Except for charging the battery) or even that famous Samsung jig (301KΩ Between pin 4 and 5 on the usb connection). It is not recognizable by any device while connected through usb interface. It is permabricked. The worst thing that can happen to a phone while the hardware is intact.
Although the name indicates otherwise, some things can be done in order to get the device working again.
It is a process in which the phone's main bored is exposed, than a special device (e.g riff box) is connected to certain areas on the pcb that were made that way for the initial configuration of the phone back in the factory. The pinout of the connection varies in each model, but the interface is the same and called "Jtag". Than, that device connects to a pc through usb interface.
So the first step would be to get that device and to connect it to both pc and phone's motherboard through a certain pinout that is mostly hard to get. You'll need a driver for that jtag flashing device and a compiled file which you would like to flash in to your phone. I don't know if that file is specific to each model or to the certain chip the phone is using (Can different models with the same chip be flashed the same way? Reply if you know and I'll edit it here).
By what I know, after flashing that file the phone will be accessible through usb interface for further flashing of the rom.
Alternatively, There are some companies that offer that kind of service. I couldn't find any who work with T989, and prices for that kind of service.
I would like to have as much information as possible and maybe eventually I'll be able to get my phone fixed. In that case I'll add some photos and document the process.

1st off, it's "taboo" not tabu. Secondly there is already a pretty good amount of threads that have covered this in detail, I'm certain because I have posted in them. Lastly, please SEARCH the existing threads before creating a new one; the answers to all your questions are already there.

All I got is some articles about the jtag protocol, which is good for knowledge but too general for the application I need, and some threads in which people writing that their phone is bricked and asks what to do about it. Not a single post is about how to fix that independently, and what does it require. If you could give me link to these threads you say that covers up the subject, I'll delete this thread at once.

don't pay attention to that guy he like to troll every where he goes. Try to google search for mobile tech or Adam Outler, and check if he get the Jtag service for our phone. If I'm not wrong the charge for the Vibrant was $50.00 plus shipping and handling. I hope you can fix your phone.

Searched, and yet no result. Sending the phone to the U.S is quite risky. I have no idea how they're intended to pack it before sending it back. I would rather doing this in Israel.
I saw on ebay several devices associated with Jtag. the price starts from 10$ for a simple usb dongle, through 30$ devices, which is the price of most of the jtag devices I found, to the 150$ riff box that is associated with phone unbricking.
By what I know Jtag is a simple serial protocol. I just need sort of "bridge" to translate the logic 1's and 0's with the right voltage level and certain clock speed to a usb interface or even RS232. How expensive can that be?
I also contacted several ebay sellers which offer a jtag repair service. they all answered this model is not supported.
I would go to Samsung labs in Israel and see what they can do to get it working.
I just thought to invest 20$, get that sort of device and to get it done by my own.
Another issue is the pinout. The pinoput of the Jtag connection is not shown in any website, so I have no way of knowing how to connect on this specific PCB.
Last thing I need is that new bootloader I can flash, and a software to flash it through. Where can I download it?
About the reason for bricking the phone, I have no Idea. As I said, last time I've installed new rom was more than a week prior to the incident. I've used some overclocking app mostly to underclock my phone, cause it drained the battery like hell before, even while it was running on stock and after changing the rom several times.
I also used some usb otg device which worked normally, but was not plugged to the device even few hours before it was bricked.
Hopefully we can figure out the cause of these permabricks so we can prevent it from happening to more people.

I gotta say, this is quite alarming. That the phone can just hard brick itself like this spontaneously.
I've had some scary experiences with the phone myself. Like a couple of random reboots that required the long power press for the phone to power back on. At least it always came back on.
I'm also from Israel myself so a similar scenario can bring me to the same situation as you.

Been flashing phones since the Razr and never bricked a phone I couldn't repair myself. That is until I tried to flash my GSII back to stock through odin. Sent it to Samsung and they had to replace motherboard. Now I'm a little nervous about using odin.

I recommend splurging on the $2-3 for a jig, I have had moments where I thought I was SOL & the jig saved my arse.

Did you solve your problem?
I was looking at using QPST
QPST is a program often frowned upon here at xda. It is commonly used to flash phones, and has little to do with android coding. The software is made for Qualcomm (or by them) and this device has a chip from them in it. This has tools for building and installing bootloaders and partition tables. Our device after a hard brick (and still serviceable by JTAGing) has a com port open still and if you load the driver in windows you will see a port number as others here on XDA have said. The driver allows ODIN to see the device but not connect. QPST does connect, but I have not attempted to flash anything to it since I have not built any files to load. I'm kind of stuck creating the needed xml that makes the partition table and headers and file that are to be loaded to partitions. This is really a softbrick, in my opion, but nobody has the knowledge for this level of building and coding, with this tool, here at XDA. If somebody does, it may make those selling JTAG services mad, but that would mean we could fix our phones on our own. On my own, I'm a few weeks away from this solution, with some help from people here that know how to write xml for partition tables and can help me locate files for a build, I can generate the files, test them, make a write up and post the solution in just a few days.
By the way, this is a multi-device solution in the long run. We get one fixed and we can start on the others with this same issue, where the only life left in the device is the Qualcomm download mode driver showing in windows device manager.

The pinout of the connection varies in each model, but the interface is the same and called "Jtag". Than, that device connects to a pc through usb interface.
So the first step would be to get that device and to connect it to both pc and phone's motherboard through a certain pinout that is mostly hard to get. You'll need a driver for that jtag flashing device and a compiled file which you would like to flash in to your phone. I don't know if that file is specific to each model or to the certain chip the phone is using (Can different models with the same chip be flashed the same way? Reply if you know and I'll edit it here).
By what I know, after flashing that file the phone will be accessible through usb interface for further flashing of the rom.
Alternatively, There are some companies that offer that kind of service. I couldn't find any who work with T989, and prices for that kind of service.
I would like to have as much information as possible and maybe eventually I'll be able to get my phone fixed. In that case I'll add some photos and document the process.

Any word on a fix using QPST?
A friend recently sent me her "retired" Galaxy Note II. She replaced it because at some point the screen stopped turning on altogether, but she still wanted me to see if I can salvage it somehow. I've tried, with no luck, and searches on the topic don't seem to suggest any solutions other than the fact that it may be a hardware issue. While I can accept this possibility, I'm really hoping that it is not the case because at this point I don't think it would be worth investing the time and money to buy the parts, learn how to replace them, and attempt it. If anyone has any ideas I'd be very grateful. Here are the symptoms:
The display NEVER turns on. It is in a constant state of pitch black.
The sounds are working fine. When I get an email, for example, it notifies me.
The hardware button works
The software buttons do not work
Upon connecting the device to a monitor, keyboard and mouse, the monitor works, however the keyboard and mouse do not. (I use the same monitor, keyboard and mouse with my Galaxy S4 and they all work fine.)
Touch interaction with the screen is working properly. Using the monitor, I am able to use the device, but it is very tricky, as it is simply a matter of trial and error. I tap on a black screen and have to look on the monitor to see if I hit my target.
The device is on the stock TouchWiz that came with it, and is not rooted. Since I am pretty sure that doing any mods without a working display would be more difficult than I could tolerate, I opted to take an OTA instead, despite the fact that it may make rooting and flashing ROM's impossible in the future. I hope I didn't screw myself by doing that but I had to make an executive decision. Here is what I've tried so far:
Factory reset
Update to the latest software (Android 4.3)
Pulled battery, held power button for 10 seconds while battery was out, replaced battery and powered device on.
I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions. Ideally, here is what I'd like to happen: get the display to turn on and restore functionality to the software buttons. This may not be possible without replacing some hardware components, which as I mentioned is not an option, but if it is I'd really like to give it a shot. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
My initial guess would be a digitizer failure...
A phone drop or water damage can easily render a phone dead...
You have the option of replacing the screen and digitizer at a cost of about $225.00 for the needed parts...but it's still no guarantee that the fix would be 100% successful...
My honest opinion is this...
Given the unknown history of the device...you are taking an expensive chance in attempting a repair...
And given the age of the device....the repair if performed by a qualified repair service would push the cost very near to the overall value of the device...
For the same dollars spent...you can obtain any number of working devices and save yourself the hassle...and the unknowns associated with a repair that will likely work...but again may not...
You are of course free to attempt the repair...but....
The skill level needed to perform a "proper" repair of the device is high...and you would need to study up on the process extensively before cracking open that case...
If I were in your situation...the choice would be to sell the device for parts....and put that cash back into a working device...
Others will chime in I'm sure with their recommendations....but I would choose to move on...g

Thanks for the reply, and sorry I didn't see it sooner (I always forget to subscribe to threads). I figured this was probably not a fixable problem (at least not easily/economically fixable). But I wanted to see if there were any quick fixes I could try, and it sounds like there aren't. With that said, if anyone does want it for parts I'd let it go for a reasonable price (considering the damage and lack of functionality) through Swappa. (Sorry if I'm not supposed to make these kinds of offers here, if that is the case I'll gladly remove it.)
Hello everyone! This is my first thread and I know it's the right site to ask this. (sorry for my english)
I bought this "suspicious" i9190 in Budapest 2 years ago. Since then it has been impossible to use it regulary.
Constant rebooting and freezes are part of its daily routine. As well as stopped apps and processes messages in a ridiculous way.
I have tried millions of ROMs, officials and customs, all kind of wipes and restores. I have even tried the eMMC brickbug apps looking for damaged chips or internal memory: Nothing, the phone is perfectly fine.
But here are some facts that may be relevant to find the problem:
- The phone came with the IMEI number scrached in the back of the battery.
- I've been using the phone for hours and hours perfectly fine as long as no update is performed and the Sync option is off.
- Doing the above I have even downloaded and used some little apps with no problems.
- When the major apps are installed, like Facebook and Instagram the phone begins to die, popping more and more "stoppped working" errors.
- The processes that fail the most are the google type but, in general, every single existing process has failed in this 2 years.
- I have noticed that when you start the phone for the first time after a wipe or a new ROM, it is better to create a new google account than using an existing one because the existing one, I think, will start updating everything while the new one will not. Anyway, using a new google account collapses the phone sooner or later.
Sorry for the long post, fellas. But I wanted to give you all the possible info I have about this phone.

I'd guess at a hardware issue in the radio and related circuitry as you seem to get the issues when apps that send/receive data frequently are in use. Though it could be anything. You probably need to get it checked by an authorised Samsung repair centre ......... if your phone is not too "suspicious!"

Thanks for your reply! Do you have an idea why they scratched the IMEI number? Maybe that could take me to where the exact problem is. Here is a photo of the back

I was going to say they scratched the IMEI number probably because it was stolen so that it could not be tracked, but it is quite easy to see the number so that is probably not the reason. One place I used to work at the test department used to scratch the bar codes on faulty PCB's so that they cannot be scanned back into the system by mistake (if the fault tag comes off, etc) as that computer system did not prevent scrapped boards from being re-entered. So I would guess this may be the case with your phone, but of course we can't know for certain! But based on this and all tests of different ROMs etc you did I suspect it is quite likely the explanation.
What I would do is look for the same model that has a cracked screen on ebay etc so it's cheap to buy then swap the PCB's from the cracked phone to your good screen (swap everything to prevent the possibility of the boards not working due to different revision numbers, as has been reported when replacing the power boards on our phone). You can also buy a repair kit for a few dollars on ebay with screwdrivers, pry tool etc

If the PCB on your phone was scratched to show it was faulty then taking to a repair shop is probably a waste of money, unless then run an assessment for free before they repair it.

not sure if this helps but that I actually managed read off the IMEI code correctly and it turns out its a turkish registered phone, I can PM you IMEI code if you want, also its not reported stolen (but i am guessing its most likely is), anyways thats all I was here to say, good luck.
