Should i keep my shift or bounce to the epic - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So i am curious on everyone experience with the epic if i should stay on the shift or bounce to the epic my main concern is a stable ics whitch the epic is a while off from getting way way too buggy for me...

Woah nononono our ICS is top of the line. Not buggy at all, and frankly I'd like to know where you heard that lie.
It has the best community out of any Android phone ever, and the battery life after rooting will make you regret even having the Shift.

Well i am talking about the shifts ics not the epic i have both phones rooted but i get like 13 to 14 hours on my shift and my wifes epic is lucky to get 6 and she is rooted and undervolted as well so i was going to trade her phones

I do miss the super amoled screen and the big sscreen this screen is too small
Sent from my PG06100 using Xparent ICS Blue Tapatalk 2

Take it from me. My brother has an Evo Shift, I have an Epic. The Epic destroys the Shift. I'd get the Epic if I were you.

Lol I loved playing with the Shift, 1.8GHz stable and. 1.9GHz somewhat stable lol.
That sucker was great, I jumped to Epic mainly because it was a tad bigger and had a 5 Row Qwerty KB.
But if your just wanting a phone to mess with to me Honestly id stick to the Shift. But for a phone to have service for and be a daily driver its the Epic.
I did notice that GPS on 2.2 For the Shift was much snappier than Epic on any OS.

well i am looking for a ics driver and i wanted to start porting over here tried porting on the shift and it was a ***** for sure.. 1.8 was sickening for sure but i am missing my big screen are the ics roms stable enought for daily drivers?? thanks guys appreciate the responses..

What is the point of 1.8ghz overclock!? Lmao if battery life is really trouble for you, get a 17$ epic 4g touch battery, fits like a glove in this phone.

The point is to have the ability and be able to never lagg lol.
I had play games on the shift that the epic couldn't ever be able to do because of the speed just saying....
And battery life for me wasn't too bad on 1.5GHz+

Which is the best ROM out there right now that is fast, stable, not perfect but at least good battery life, fast lock on gps and doesn't have data loss...? All your answers are great fully appreciated

Well I am still on 5.01, but it's jailbroken. It's blazing fast, ridiculously smooth, relatively stable, GPS lock is near instantaneous, and I don't have any data loss ever. I do drop calls from time to time and battery life leaves much to be desired though.

Please provide objective data to back up your subjective claim.
Blazer 4.0 is hands down the best room out there right now speed battery life everything works.
Can't wait for phantom hackers ICS ROM my mouth is watering lol
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
entirely a subjective question I will say codename which is aosp but other people like touch wuzz ..... try them all out and see for yourself
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2 Beta-4
Codename is the best rom out there, except its kinda like aokp, so either of them, except aokp is based of cm9, so either of the three, except they are aosp, so maybe try a touchwiz one, but i heard that fc24 has worse battery life than fc22, but maybe if you update your profile.......whatever, flash them all
Like Epix said, it's all subjective. If you're starting out, you should probably stay with Gingerbread roms. There are several good ones, check the android development thread. I prefer Calkulin's Gingerbread (currently at v3.0) not only because of the stability but also for the stock color scheme/dialer etc. Most of the other roms are themed with different colors that are I just don't prefer.
Calkulins and Phantom Hacker's Blazer seem to be two of the most popular but you will have to try several to see what works best for you in appearance, speed, battery life and features!

ROM opinions

So I got the Epic 4G Touch a couple months ago coming from an HTC Evo.. It seemed like the Evo was easier to just flash and try out ROMs, mostly because there was no Odin or ICS peculiarities to deal with... just download and flash..
So my question.. I've tried a couple ROMS, TSM I really like but it has too many bugs and I can't seem to get them all fixed at once (things like random reboots, alarms not going off, etc)... I tried an ICS (I can't remember which one) and the battery life was horrible even after a few days.. This phone is my lifeline and I can't afford to have a buggie phone for days on end and I don't always have the time to reflash...
What have you found, either ICS, CM or Stock-ish that is somewhat customizable, very stable, fast and has at least as good of battery life as stock... bascially, is a good daily driver?
For ICS, I like Goodness by mijjahz and for GB I like blazer by PhantomHacker

Even though there are ICS that could be daily drivers, you're probably better off with GB for now. I personally recommend this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1449023
It's a themed ROM, very stable, lots of customization, and plenty of add-ons.
I've been on it for a very long time, recently switched to do some Beta testing for the ICS version.

I've only played with ICS a little, for right now Id stick with GB. I've tried pretty much every popular GB rom in this forum for at least a week (well, maybe not ALL of them) and I've got to say Unnamed and Blazer 4.0 have been the best for me. Those two are pretty much identical. Both have amazing battery life, they've been debloated, they're very snappy, ICS themed, and I've never had a single issue with either. I like Calk's rom as well, but the last time I tried it was 2.0 or something like that, I'm sure it's still great though. Just run it and throw an ICS theme over it

I would suggest going for Calkulins 2.9.2 then. It runs on lightly themed touchwiz. I just absolutely cant stand the pull down notification bar on the stock rom. The reason why I say 2.9.2 is because 3.0 runs on gunslinger which doesn't play well with the stock underclock/undervolt scripts. It's meant to be used with SetCPU. Also 3.0 uses a 4x5 drawer rather than 5x5. 4x5 is retarded in my opinion. I can't stand it.
Well I like the ICS leaks which I''m using now. Only thing that bugs me is the turbo scroll bug and battery life is about 85 percent of what it is on GB but I'm still gonna give it a few days for the kernel to settle.
I came from the og epic and found that extreme overclocking and my inclination to try tweaks and tinker outweighs my desire to run any leaks. Therefore I have stuck with el29 as source is available. Calkulins 2.9.2 with gunslinger is working suitable to me...

I find ISC smooth as could be with great battery life. I always use SFHubs odin and stock ICS launcher. I dont restore data and back up with google and have not had a problem. SFHubs self extracting odin has got to be the safest most user friendly way to flash in my opinion.

Yes, using rooted stock EL29. Reason is that while I love to tinker and geek out, I have been doing that for decades... There comes a point when you just want some stability and choose not to create more work for yourself than what one would classify as fun.
I can't say that the bricking is or is not a concern for me. There are a few bugs that really tick me off at times, don't get me wrong. so if anything would make me consider going to ics leaked roms, it would be another round of media scanning reboots at startup

I'm running an EL29 based rom. Because GB works. I find these ICS leaks abysmal, no offense to the hard work that the devs do.
I don't care to suffer through crap battery life, glitches, bugs, notifications that don't work, terrible browser experience etc etc.
Until we have an official ICS rom, i'm really not interested anymore in these unfinished leaks.

New to SGS2 T989

Hi all
I am new to the SGS2 T989. I am coming from a Nexus S 4G, which I rooted and went with Peter Alfonso's Bugless Beast, running Matr1x kernel.
I am going to be using Straight Talk in Baltimore/DC. What have people's experience been with Straight Talk?
Also, because I was running a Nexus device with a lightly tweaked AOSP ROM, I would like to find something similar for the SGS2 T989. I prefer as close to vanilla as possible, I don't like CM or AOKP (why the cheesy unicorn?), because they are just too buggy imo. I've tried them all and kept going back to Bugless Beast. So, I'd like to find a ROM that is the equivalent of Bugless Beast if possible. I hope it is out there!!
Looking forward to getting to know you all on this forum!
Cheers

If you dont want cm9/10 or aokp then you'd have to take a current rom and install a different launcher. It wont be exactly the same but theres no alternative right now.
I would recommend you give AOKP a try. You can always customize it to not even notice the Little Unicorn!!

What Rom Should I get?

I've been on Calkulins EGT.ROM from the get go and I loved that he was always on top of his ROM. Now that he has bailed this ROM has gotten old and outdated. I want some suggestions on what Rom I should jump to next. Right now I'm on Calkulin's E4GT v3.0 EL29 using modem FB21. Last few weeks I've been trying out different modems but none seem to work out for me. I'm in Central California if that makes a difference. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Also if this still is the best ROM available can you tell me what modem is working the best for you? I've tried so many I forgot which one was giving me the best battery life and connection.
Stay on whatever modem works best for you man, it varies area to area phone to phone.... insofar as roms I'm loving sbrissens aosp jelly bean, which is extremely stable for an alpha and a great daily driver... should you want something that's 100% more or less though I'd look into either blue Kuban or goodness, both of which are ics touchwiz based like caulks ROM...

GPS is what it is and its just a matter of trying different modems till you figure out what works best for you... insofar as battery how old is your phone? Might be time for a new one, does it spin freely when you set it on a flat surface? And that being the case I would for sure just go with blue kuban or goodness those are probably the most stable easiest ICS ROMs we have...

There is a stock rooted FH13 floating around that is nice, very normal/basic ICS. I just don't use TW.
+1 for CM10 (I also jumped from Calk's ROMs). It's very smooth and very stable as of v5.1. Minor glitches here and there with audio volume, but other than that all major issues have been resolved.
I think my phone hates the CM10JB alpha for some reason ...GPS never works and battery life is horrible, I use some tweaked stock Rom.

Battery life is subjective based on use habits and what apps you have installed. However, blu kuban has served me very well, especially since the "battery life issue" (according to Samsung/Sprint) update of fh13.

Team Venum's cRaCk_StOcK is based on FH23, no probs with GPS, modem good, battery great, and it still offers that nice TW look if you want. It's a great blend of a few tweaks on a solid stock look.
As you see everyone here has different opinions of what ROM you should flash because we all have different likes or needs when it comes to what we put on our phones. I've flashed almost every ROM that's available for our phone, but I always come back to CM9.

I just picked up one of these phones to replace an original epic 4g (thing was great but after being dropped 5007 times it finally quit). I was using CM9 for a while on it but the GPS seemed flakey from time to time. As far as on this model, does GPS work well with CM9? The main things I need the phone to do without fail is make phone calls and GPS.
With that said, would CM9 be the suggested route or another basic rom?
