My girlfriend has a defy and it'd like to put a custom rom on it.
But I know from experience that they often have a lot of bugs.
What's the best rom that doesn't sacrifice any usability?
Oh, and her gps is absolutely awful, it can't lock onto any satellites.

CyanogenMod7 would definitely have to be the best for performance, the phone becomes much more snappy, and responsive. As far as battery is concerned, I'd say it's going to be the same with any ROM seeing as they all have an absolute ton of processes. You can use SetVSel to change the battery consumption. Definitely CM7 though.
What about the bugs?

i've been using cm7 beta 6 since it came out, and i can tell you, there are only minor bugs, nothing to worry about, the phone is absolutely usable, and very fast. the only thing i'm having problems with is the camera, but afaik that's just me, noone else is having it. try it, if it doesn't work out, you could still try froyo (i recommend 3.4.3-11), that's not bad either
I have been on CM7 for a good week now, and haven't really noticed any bugs to be honest. It's a very solid rom.
Any thoughts on her gps issue?
Also, she really likes the look of MIUI, any thoughts on it?

Cm7 comes with a baseband switcher, so it could potentially fix the GPS issues, not sure about that one though.
MIUI, I have zero experience with it, all I know is that it looks like the iPhone.

i have never used miui either, but i've read somewhere that it's development is based on cm7 by quarx, so it probably has more bugs than cm7. not sure though.
+1 for CM7, both performance and stability. I would recommend using the boot menu overclock and vsel settings in 2nd init. I have always had issues with setvsel, but this has been flawless.
I couldn't recommend miui, even in the htc desire , which has had over 8mths to stabilize, it is still full of bugs. My wife has that phone now with cm7 and it is rock solid.
Barebones 1.51 is quick and stable too, but I would wait until Fritolays does a cm7 mod, cm7 is just too good.
from my experiënce, roms don't realy increase or decrease batterylife. more important is weather you overclock or not.
always calibrate your battery, after installing a new rom, or else you're having battery drain problems in notime.
I think quark's cm7 for now is the most nice rom because it is the only 2.3.3 rom runnung perfectly @ 800 mhz. without too much bugs.
when battery is calibrated you can easily do three days while using internet sometimes or play a little game.
If you don't mind using froyo instead of gingerbread, there are tons of nice roms running perfectly fine. try adlxmod, pays, barebone etc.
i try barebones, pays, MIUI and CM7 the level of battery is similar in 4 roms, i can use intensive for 1 day and when i go to charge the phone have 20%

Now i use China Unicom 2.10, same results. I switched from CN 1.11 - Barebones - CN 2.10. I saw a battery draining with batebones, but i dont know if i should blame barebones or some defectiva app.
China 2.10, is very battery friendly and very stable (Fropyo 2.2.2). i'd recommend it over anything else, it have call recorder integrated in dialer, and data plan manager integrated, so you wont incur in data charges. you may need to change baseband to fit your country with basebandswitcher.
Anyway. calibrating a battery is good once every month, but contrary to belief you will not get better battery life; you will just get better readings about its charge.
Screen + Radios are the ones that drains the most power, CPU undervolt can make difference.
Imagine 2 scenarios.
1: Power user, using phone all the time. whatever you do to conserve energy, screen is gonna take 50% of total battery consumption (Tested and confirmed) Radios are the next, so wireless is better than 3g, and 2g is better than 3g. Cpu is the last, undervolt it to save some energy.
2: Users who use the phone for 1-2hours and keep it in the pocket most of the day. Here is where you are going to get the most energy savings, an undervolting and deep sleeping cpu, in china rom, wireless always on, getting notifications from gmail and social networks, will drain only 0.5% of battery per hour, that is 12% every 24 hours. All of the other roms i tried, drained 1%-2% per hour in standby, which is 24% / 48% a day
My defy is running Pay's Rom V6.0, so far so good. Battery life lasts 2 days with moderate use. The only possible bug I found is that the phone sometimes went dead when playing Fruit Ninja.
I've used 3-4 ROMs and so far CM7 is the one with best performance and battery backup. Max I got from my 2months old defy is here in the screeny:
PS: Using SetVsel([email protected],[email protected],[email protected])and I've almost disabled all those eyecandy features of CM7 such as zoom effects on drawer open/close,animate when screen off, ALL vibrations.
So guys, i definitely need a sense rom because of the look ( especially the music player, 3.0 lockscreen like in insertcoin and apps) and the fast writing speed of my sd card...
i tried leedroid, rc hd mix, maybe a froyo rom would be better? Or recoment a different kernel?
currently i use insertcoin ( newest stable release), but the battery is so bad i can hardly get a day out with normal use... wifi gps off brioghtness low...
can u tell me a good rom? would appreciate it
I find al GB ROMS have poor battery life then I changed the kernel to MANU's and it was much much better. Maybe try a different kernel?

With Gingerbread I think the Reflex S is pretty OK for the battery or else it is possible to undervolt further.
Maybe you just need to calibrate your battery, if you change your ROM a lot. I use BatteryCalibration from Market and it seem to do the job.

Battery calibration does not work for me D the percentage drop fast to 99% percent again and so on
Yeah, I would do a full wipe. Especially if you are moving between different ROM's.
So far, the AuraxTsense 8.4 (Android 2.2) was my favorite in terms of battery usage - but since moving to 2.3.3 based ROM's, my battery drops faster when using the phone, but lasts longer when in standby.

Well, if Battery Life is your primary concern, you would probably get the best results with a Froyo ROM, since the kernels are further in development.
However, in terms of features etc. I think the Gingerbread is better. I personally like the Sense 3.0 improvements etc. So I am just crossing my fingers that battery life will gradually improve further
My experience is, that Gingerbread ROMs in general are battery hungry. As for sense ROMs i can say that LeeDroid suits me best regarding battery life. At the moment im on oxygen and get a day out of it with normal use.
Best results with battery life i had with LeeDroid Froyo ROM (v2.4 i think). Smartass governor and screen off - 245mhz max/min sometimes got me 2 days without charging.
Maybe this helps you finding a solution.
By the way, you can also improve your battery life by turning off the various Auto Sync features, for example Sense Sync, Facebook, Weather etc...
So i've flashed reflex s now, hoping the battery will do better tahn insertcoin.

now using MIUI rom .. its GUI is close to sense and good battery life
24h and i still have 40% off battery on InsertCoin 1.0.8 CM7,wifi is always on,data is enable,set brightness to auto. Try charge your desire to 100% turn it off,connect charger again and wait till green led is up,than turn on your phone to fastboot menu (power and volume down) and clean battery stats,reeboot.Also You can use battery calibration app from market

At first, the recommended manu kernel won't be working with sense roms, because it's an aosp kernel (so made for aosp roms).
Second, using setcpu and setting a screen off profile for it really improves standby battery power. I set it mine to:
128 - 442 mhz ondemand governor
Third, the display is the biggest and fastest battery drainer, no matter which rom you are using.

If you use smartass governor, you do not have to set an extra profile for screen off. This governor automatically uses the min cpu frequency when the screen is off.
smartass governor – is based on the concept of the interactive governor.
I have always agreed that in theory the way interactive works – by taking over the idle loop – is very attractive. I have never managed to tweak it so it would behave decently in real life. Smartass is a complete rewrite of the code plus more. I think its a success. Performance is on par with the “old” minmax and I think smartass is a bit more responsive. Battery life is hard to quantify precisely but it does spend much more time at the lower frequencies.
Smartass will also cap the max frequency when sleeping to 352Mhz (or if your min frequency is higher than 352 – why?! – it will cap it to your min frequency). Lets take for example the 528/176 kernel, it will sleep at 352/176. No need for sleep profiles any more!

I am having the same problem with GB roms no matter how many times you calibrate the battery there is no improvement .

I've been trying out many roms in the last time and I've noticed that on every Gingerbread rom, the battery drain is much higher than on Froyo roms. That's weird, because I constantly hear of people's battery life getting better after switching to Gingerbread.
On Froyo, the standby consumption is at 5 mA. On Gingerbread it's 75 mA. On Froyo, I can surf the internet for 10 minutes and nothing changes, on Gingerbread the battery would lose 5%. With regular use, when the phone is full in the morning, it's almost every day empty 8 hours later.
I just want to have a Gingerbread Wildfire with decent battery life. I tried many roms, and even on CM7, battery life is horrible. Even on a clean install without any apps. What is going on there? Is it maybe the radio? Or the kernel? Do you experience similar drain?
Maybe CPU?
I dont know if this will help but Gingerbread roms often have overclock settings, have you used the overclock feature because this would most definatly reduce your battery life but otherwise im not too sure but i must say i was using Oxygen (Gingerbread) on my wildfire and the battery life was very bad compared to stock ruu roms, sorry if i didnt help :S
Any idea? Im about to upgrade to the gingerbread.

I know about that, but I don't overclocked my Wildfire. Just because the battery drain is heavy enough on regular CPU speed.

Just upgrade and see yourself, I heard about many Wildfire users with Gingerbread who got better battery performance than on Froyo. Unfortunately, I ain't one of these
After a new flash it's usual to have battery drain. After a few charges it will buff out.

underclocking ur cpu is a propable way to go. actually using conservative governor in cpu settings, may help your battery efficiency. but before doing this, search for a thread concerning this matter. u can always give it a shot and see for yourself, decide later if you want to keep gingerbread or not.

I have tried all underclock, undervolt, battery life tips i can find and the best i can get is about 14hrs on this rom.
I even asked HTC for the price to install the 2100mAH battery in the phone... they came back with $160 which for a 15% boost isn't worth it.
Therefore I am asking the community, which is the best rom for battery life? Sense roms and stock included.
I'm also wondering if there is an app that can collect battery life stats and post them to the web, sort of like antutu but for battery instead of 3d performance. Does such a thing exist? It would be useful for this phone.
My usage profile:
Listening to music ~45 mins each way from work
Gmail push for priority inbox
Microsoft Exchange sync once a day while on charger
Talkbox for communicating with workmates

Hi,
Its well known that AOSP roms' battery is generally lower than sense roms...so if u want a proper battery life...try one of the sense roms...hasnt disappointed me...nearly same set of requirements for me and it has not failed..!! I am using AHRD which is quite good..also try ViperX roms...read a lot about it being real good..!! but havent had the time to try it out myself..!! but generally ARHD or ViperX can help u with ur usage...give them a try and try for like ~1week b4 u come to a conclusion...What i do is to wipe out battery stats when i install a new rom so that the battery is calibrated with the new rom..!!

use Blade rom with no-frils app and set cpu to 860 , lasts for one and a half day with regular usage ......
Honestly ?? Stock rom got best battery life. I used Renovate and ARHD, they don't reach even a half of stock lifetime.
I am on TripNDroids releases now for a time (since 017 I guess) and I must say, the battery life is fair. I use my phone often for WhatsApp and surfing/playing around and one battery charge lasts for one day. Although I have set the screen brightness almost to the minimum.
I've tried a few ROMs, but it's the kernels that are making the difference for me, i'd try viperx with faux ultimate kernel if you want good battery life.
And do try repacking the kernel boot.img with the one from the ROM using the repacking tool on the dev section.
Guys am almost flashing 1 or 2 roms daily, till date i experinced with 7 r 8 roms..but none of them satisfied me...some ROM had problem with the basic things like camera, camcoder and other things, some other ROMs lack in battery usage...
So can someone sheds some light on this part...
As long as you're on a new stable ROM such as ICS you're battery should be fine. JB is too early to know really but it's fantastic for me. So, assuming you're now on a stable ROM (a non Sense ROM would be better too) the problem is either your battery or you. I would recommend getting a new battery if you still have the 2 year old one the phone came with, and tbh I'd recommend getting a new Ankers 1600 mAh anyway as they're fantastic, lasts me days.
Now that you're on stable ROM and have a shiny new battery, if you're battery life is still bad then the latter problem I mentioned applies, that is, you, or rather how you are using the phone.
If, like many other Vision users I see around the forums, you are overclocked to absurd speeds well over 1GHz running the performance governor then have I got news for you of course your battery life is going to be terrible. For this reason, tbh you really don't need to go over stock clock speed and if you use the Virtuous OC daemon then you can under clock significantly when the screen is off, this saves enormous amounts of battery life.
Also if you are using the phone constantly and have the screen very bright, data on all the time etc., then you've got to accept that you simply won't last more than a day between charges.
By the way I'm not going to recommend a specific ROM because as you should know "what ROM should I get" threads are not allowed, I just wanted to give you some general battery help.

Am using this ROM : [Flinny] Andromadus Test builds - CM10.1[17]
and my phone is just 40 days old... so the battery will be fine abvsly... then i wont over clock it more than 850 mhz, so it satays under stock freq. then i will be using the mobile in half brightness,, i used to hear songs nd play games lil bit... even though my battery last for jus 12-15 hrs... thats y i doubt on the ROM, but am not sure ...
