cell phone tap question - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

My sister and I were just discussing on the issue of tapping a cell phone call. I couldn't really pick a perfect sub-forum for this question i just know there is an abundance of talented knowing members in our forum. my question is does anyone know if it is possible/legal for local police city/sheriff to listen in on our cell phone calls? i was always under the impression that a few requirements had to be met to "tap" a cellular conversation. those being 1.) only the fbi/cia could do it. 2.) it could only be for international calls. 3.) the internatioal call had to be suspected terrorist activity. Now i could be way off. If anyone has any info on this subject that would be great.

Lol are you doing things that r illegal? It is illegal to an extent.. im sure if they have a search warrant or you are part of an investigation they can obtain phone records from the carrier and even message detail up to so many days back (only stays in system so long) but they are not allowed to tap your phone without probable cause to do so.. and im sure the police cant monitor your calls unless your on the phone with the police.. but look at all your murder investigations, calls you hear were all mostly calls to the police operator that you hear because tapping somones calls for no reason is illegal.. if you are a known terrorist they can tap your phone because you are a risk to national security but if they are tappin it thats all there doing and when they act on it, you dont hear anything about tapping just that they foiled the plot lol.. all in all, if they do tap your phone its somewhat illegal and you will never know.. we do know they have the ability and surely do.. but i wouldnt worry unless your doin somthing highly illegal, doubt theyd care about a small fry like somone on xda lol

appreciate your reply very much. i thought for sure that question would have started a frenzy of replies. nah i'm not doing anything illegal, that i know of lol. i can just recall this conversation coming up multiple times in the past ten years and all my less techy friends are always "dude ur f'n crazy if u dont think all cops can tap cell conversations" as where i stand strong on the criteria that i mentioned in my first post be met to have cell tapping as an option. i can argue with them till im blue in the face but its always "no way dude" lol. i do thank you for pretty much confirming my thoughts to an extent.

There is lots of stuff about this online, here is some reading for you http://www.fas.org/sgp/crs/intel/98-326.pdf

Then there are the conspiracy theorists who espouse the idea that certain keywords used in a conversation trigger actual eavesdropping.
Considering how disappointed people are with Siri and how poorly Samsung's Voice Command works for me. I think it's just a theory.

Wirelessly power on your phone?

Is there a way to send a signal to your phone to power it on? I know that the company Asurion can do this. It is a new feature now. I have heard about this here and there but never have looked into it.
Wrong section should be in q&a
from my phone duh
Maybe remote in ssh style or wireless adb and give the command shutdown.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Not possible unless the phone isn't really off. If just the screen is off, sure, it's very easy. Check out WebKey for full remote control of your phone.
Take a step back and look at what you're asking:
You want to turn on the phone, using the cell radio, while the phone and said radio is off. Quite simply, this is impossible unless you have the phone turn itself on to check-in for a "turn on all the way" message. What Asurion does is tag the phone and send it commands, but they can't do that if the actual phone is off and/or the battery pulled out.
You're cellphone is never truly "off" unless the battery is removed from the device.
There is likely a way to do it, but this guy **points thumbs at self** does not know how.
http://news.cnet.com/2100-1029_3-6140191.html
Granted its an old article, but still gives light to what is possible.
And to the OP, I know what you are in reference too... I remember reading a while back that if a powerful enough signal is provided to a device the article was about wirelessly charging batteries from a far distance using towers rather than things like the touchstone and powermat type devices, and the device is able to interpret the signal and activate certain processes, it was in fact possible to charge wirelessly from a-far.
Same concept would be applied, but it would require a downloaded application to run 24/7 on your phone (on or off), unless you powered down by use of battery removal.
Why's everyone so quick to say that this is impossible? If it's impossible, how come with some phones, when the phone is off and an alarm is set, the phone will power on for the alarm to go off. I've seen it done. I'm sure a similar method could be used.
There is no doubt in my mind that this is imposable. I have read a few articles back in the day and even talked to a guy that worked in government security one day (I was selling him a phone) He was a manager over a department where all they do is watch for hackers all day long over networks for all sorts of corporations likes banks and what not. (there is a whole lot more to it than just that) Anywho, When I found out what line of work he was in, I could not help but ask him all sorts of questions. It took him a while to answer even start to answer them. We became buddy buddy I suppose enough for him to shed a little light on a few of mine. When I started asking him a couple of questions about some things I have read bout cell phones he was very very vague to the point where it looked like he was trying to tell me things without actually telling me. I was only able to get him to clearly answer one thing. I was asking him about GPS's in phones. He basically told me that most manufactures put many different alternate ways to access things on a cell phone. (did not specify what) He acted like it was government required or something. (Which I doubt) but he went on to say that there is a signal that you can send most phones that will send a GPS location back to the phone even if the phone is off. After he told me that I asked him about powering on the phone itself or powering on a direct (call) connection without the phone even coming on. (I have ready some pretty weird things) he basically was like "look there is no way around anything unless the battery is out of the phone, that's all I'm going to say" And I was all like "ok man". I also work for a phone company. Which is where I heard about Asurions new features. One of them which they claim, can wirelessly turn a phone on if it is off and the battery is not dead and call it for you or located it if you have lost it.
Which is basically why I am here asking these questions.

This is for when you might have lost your phone or if someone stole it and had it off.

Your the guy that bought an EVO from a dude that claimed he got it at best buy without checking the ESN. Then you come on the boards and ask how to activate it because it's not working. Then you start a whole new post asking if you can flash an EVO that has been flashed to cricket, back to sprint..... go away dude.
No relevant knowledge to post but i sure as hell want somebody to check into it.
Im expecting a tutorial by the end of this week. Guys get to work!!!!!!!

The phone is not off then. It's asleep. Big difference. Here's a simple test. The night before an important job interview/test at school/whatever, set an alarm. Hold the power button and choose "Power Off" from the menu. Go to sleep. See what happens.

$50 credit from Sprint for LOS

After seeing so many people with LOS issues (myself being one of them) I figured I was due some credit back from Sprint for my trouble. I called and got in touch with a rep who wanted to troubleshoot my phone for the problems. This is my only phone and I explanined that it is a widespread issue and that a large amount of people in forums, including the Sprint forum, are experiencing the same problems. She offered to give me a replacement phone. I explained that it wouldn't do myself, Sprint, or Samsung any favors to replace the phone when it was most likely a firmware/OS/software related issue. She offered to give me a different model. I politely refused and mentioned that I know Sprint is aware of the issue and is most likely diligently working to solve it. I only wanted some sort of reimbursement for the LOS that has happened and may continue to happen until said update arrives. She asked me to hold while she spoke to her superior. When she returned, she said she could give me a $50 credit for the inconvenience. However, if I continue to experience the same problem, they will not be able to offer any more reimbursements. I should then run through any troubleshooting that they ask me to do and possibly get a replacement. She strongly suggested that I take it in for inspection at a sprint store. I may do this. But, I would really like to have a stock ROM to flash in Odin before I do that. I can just hear the tech tell me how it was all the fault of rooting that wrecked the radio.
I would like to stress the point that I was very polite, calm, reasonable, and understanding of what she had to do while speaking to the rep.
You are giving their average tech far too much credit. Apologies to any in present company...though you likely know precisely what I mean. (If you are here you aren't their "average" guy)

They have a set group of questions they are required to ask, troubleshooting that they are required to do, and are not able to offer the type of technical support that you can get in a forum. The corporation will not allow them to. Every call in is recorded and statistics are most likely kept on how to keep the average customer happy with minimal effort. This sets guidelines that are enforced on their employees. Your best bet is to be polite, and kind with them. They have to do their job and as long as you stay politely firm in what you want, generally, you will get your way. Being rude, arrogant, demeaning, or negative with them will only get you a headache and them another ****ty day at work with a story to tell in the breakroom about the last arsehole who called in and thought he/she was "somebody".

You have obviously rooted your phone when many pointed out that zedo causes los. Your noise about phone quality given this fact is just disturbing. I suggest you back off to stock kernal plus root that has fixed los for many including myself. And be honest with sprint that you did so instead of generating fud so they can focus on real issues.

You are completely mistaken and are barking up the wrong tree. LOS is happening to many who have not rooted their phones. If you are not experiencing LOS anymore after flashing back to stock kernal, it is purely a coincidence. I have given no "noise about phone quality". You should take a read of my post and read it in full, again. I plainly said that it was a software related issue and that Sprint is aware of it. Sprint and Samsung are working on fixing it. Links have been posted numerous times as to Samsung and Sprint being aware of the problems. Everyone who has said that Zedo's kernal has caused this has been mistaken. People who have never even heard of Zedo's kernal are having the same troubles. Please read read read before flaming. I will not reply to any more ignorant remarks when it is obvious that the flamer has misread the OP, jumped to conclusions, and flew off on a delirious tantrum.
So should I call and get $50 too? I haven't lost anything to wanna ask for a reimbursement even if I have LOS all I do is reboot...I'm not losing anything...nothing is perfect

LOS was caused for me through rooting. I can't speak for everyone but I can say that it did cause LOS for my device and probably others. You said it was inconvenience for you to have to go through this and mention maybe even taking your phone in for repair. You really can't blame others for assuming you are dealing with the LOS issues. And if you are not I don't really understand why you called Sprint to complain about this issue.
Maybe you should take a longer look at what you posted before deciding rather or not someone misread you. Though, it would probably be a waste of time. You've already proved to be oblivious to the fact that root is causing LOS for a lot of users.

You apparently don't use your phone much for calls and text. My work calls me and will expect me to respond soon. Missing important phone calls can be really costly for me. I have standards, they don't have to be perfect but I do expect it to meet my standards. What is the point of having it if it doesn't?

Do whatever you feel is ethical. I have lost plenty. I've lost business calls, missed potential appointments with clients, and numerous personal calls. I got the messages late and missed out on money and activities that I would have been involved in if I had the service that I pay a premium to rely on. The $50 doesn't come close to covering that. But, I feel that it is an act of good character that they gave it to me. I wouldn't have called and asked for it, if I didn't feel that I deserved it after being a loyal customer for over 12 years. It shouldn't be my responsibility to have to make sure I look and see if I have service every 5 minutes, when I am in an area that normally gets amazing 4G signal. I'm glad you haven't lost anything and I hope that continues for you.
BTW, I had LOS before flashing anything.

I havnt done a single thing to my phone other than change launchers and I get LOS. Havnt rooted it, havnt even wanted to yet. This is a real problem and I hope people do continue to call in a try to get money from sprint. If this continues then they might notice, "hey maybe we should fix this problem because its costing us 50 dollars worth of credit per customer that calls in to *****". Obviously that last part is wishful thinking thought. But come on dude, no need to flame someone like that, (especially when youre wrong).

I'm not on Zedo's kernel and I have LOS. I've had LOS on Stock without root, stock with root, v3 and v5 of ACS's kernel. Only one I haven't had LOS on is Zedo's, and that's cause I haven't tried it. Take your smug ass comments somewhere else.

Its not a ROM issue. If you live or travel in an area with ****ty signal you will get it. I had it about 7 times today. I ended up just turning the phone off. Basically if the phone loses signal you have to reboot.
Now I realize that many of you live in your mom's basement, work at the McD around the corner, and have a sprint tower in your back yard so you think the rest of us are crazy. No, the rest of us travel and enter areas where sprint coverage sucks.
Using roam control and leaving the phone on roaming I don't get the LOS unless I get deep into a building and lose the verizon signal.

I live in a great spot with excellent 4G coverage. I live on my own, work for myself and am kind of crazy myself so I kind of have a right to call others crazy. I am getting the LOS bug randomly and frequently. I have full bars here at home. It just dies and gives the dead circle. It just did it less than half hour ago. It also did it numerous times while working in the field, as well..
Some say that it is fixed by resetting their MSL. Some say they fixed it by flashing a certain kernal. Some believe that if you keister a pine cone and scrub your face with lemon custard that it will fix it, too. None of these things...er...has worked for me.

Last resort before I return my S2..

I surely hope this topic hasn't been made... I don't want to be that guy.
Short and sweet... I'm rooted (that MAY not have anything to do with it)
I got this phone launch day... It worked perfectly. Not saying this is the reason why but as soon as the Iphone 4S was released my phone started failing.. Essentially what it does is give me a fast paced busy signal when I try to make a call. Sometimes I have to attempt to make a car 15 times or more. Of course that is annoying but people also get the same signal when they try to call me. Since I'm in sales that is a huge problem.
I called Sprint, the local store. The lady told me that while OG EVOs were having that issue I was the first SII. She said sprint was currently upgrading (and I read stuff in the news to back that up on a national level).
So after receiving no help from the local store I called the 1800 sprint1 stuffola.. They had me go through the whole ##xxxx## stuff. After doing that and it not fixing the problem they suggested I go to a sprint store and have my phone replaced. Now I, don't want to do that. I really don't want someone else’s phone and I just have this thing.. Where I don't want another phone (even though it will be an SII).
Now, I have an airwave at the house and I have absolutely no problem there. Calls come and go as they please. Which makes me feel like it isn't my phone. Is there anything I can do before I go and replace my baby... I really don't feel like going through the whole unrooting process and getting rid of the triangle before I go in there...
I've done PRL updates so that isn't it.
Not sure, but maybe try flashing the new modem...
Bobby O'S Epic Touch..
I had issues with busy signals and calls not going through also....until I turned off Google voice from my computer. I was using Google voice and groove ip to make calls over wifi and once I turned wifi off my phone was useless. If you aren't using GV then I have no clue lol.

Signal boost?

Do you know how when you call 911 it boosts your signal but destroys your battery? How does it do it? Is there anyway to do that without calling 911? Like if you were traveling across the country and you get low to no signal, and you have your phone plugged in and you could get that boost?

Kind of doubt you can trick your phone into thinking it's in emergency mode, but it's an interesting thought. Honestly from my past experience I think your problem is Sprint. I had them in the past so I can relate to the crappy reception. And I see allot of others complaining about Sprint. People will complain for the sake of it, but you don't usually see people replying "You must live in a crappy area because my Sprint reception is awesome". Haha. Know what I mean? Anyways props for the more positive thinking spin on your thread. Catch more flies with honey.

Your signal goes up in an emergency because every carrier agrees to handle emergency calls for free. Even phones without service can call 911. There is no exploiting this because not only is that incredibly asinine but almost certainly illegal. At least theft but probably fraud and numerous other charges.

I called the police and they arrested him and now I must say I am more scared of a payback than ever.
I MUST HAVE CALL RECORDING ON WIFI!!!!!!
I WILL PAY ANYONE WHO CAN DO IT OR TELL ME HOW TO DO IT!!! I am not rich though...I am disabled and have very little income...
PLEASE!!!!
IT IS JUST ME AND MY NINE YEAR OLD GIRL...I AM SCARED TO DEATH ABOUT THIS THREAT. If this happens again I want to be able to record the bastard!
Do not worry about threats if you knew how many times it happened... its probably some people who have lot of time to waste

With all due respect, this advice is absolutely terrible.
I of course can't make any promises as I don't really use this feature so i havent spent much time working on anything with it in the past, but ill try to look at what's out there later tonight.
Which roms or recording apps have you tried this with?

Almost all out there don't work on WiFi calling as reports have gone across and not many devs seem to worry about it as they don't have the need for it or they don't even have T-Mobile so it's 100% not in their interest to spend time on it, totally understandable.
There is also the option of Google Voice maybe??

That's pretty much what I was thinking. Also that the best chance for finding one that works may be to try the apps from the store such as Total Recall and Call Recorder from ?svkalex?. There's a dev thread for his somewhere here on xda. It may help to pose this question on his thread if he doesn't already have it working
I wonder if any of the old ICS roms would be able to do this? They get forgotten easily, but had call recording enabled in some of those too.

Well personally I try not to panic when it happens because before I got some serious threats several times and till today nothing happened to me but I can understand him...

Every situation is different, and in this case there is a child present. You don't take chances when you have a kid with you, period.
I understand where you may be coming from as well, but there is no minimizing it when a child could be in danger. Even if you're positive its just an evil prank, you don't take the chance of being wrong, because you only have to be wrong once....

You don't know this is a male either, it may be a female dealing with a crazed male that is 300lbs.
What about ICS if she goes back to 4.0.4 did it work back then on WiFi calling?

I don't know. I just know several roms had call recording and it was easier to implement on ics. Figured it'd be worth a try at least.

Update: Tried several apps w/JB and no progress. I was trying to get an understanding why and I do have a theory. Basically, the call recorders all interface with the Qualcomm cellular radio to record from the uplink/downlink streams. On our S3's, wifi is handled by a separate Broadcom chip. So it would probably require either writing new code from scratch or a major rework of existing call recorders to work.
Like I said though, its just a theory, but it kind of makes sense I think. Its highly possible I could be completely wrong too.
There are still a few things ill try, but unfortunately, I'm starting to think it may be well beyond my ability to solve. I've got my daughter today so it may not be until later tonight before I can try much else. I will update when I have some more info though.
In the meantime, try calling T-Mobile customer care (ask for retentions if you've been with them for several years). Try first to just explain that you just have very weak signal and ask about their cellular signal booster (actual name escapes me atm). If it seems like you need to, explain your situation and why you are in need of it. (You could first try saying you are about to drop your broadband service, and won't have wifi calling available anymore. Also that you may be forced to look into switching carriers if this can't be solved. This is precisely what retentions is for). I'd avoid getting into explaining the need for call recording if possible, and if it seems you may have to but it wouldn't match what you've already said, you may want to call back and speak to a new rep first.
Some people have reported outstanding results with the signal booster, while others have said it didn't help a bit, so ymmv. But it is another option and T-Mobile has been known to provide these free of charge to some customers for home use only where they have weak coverage.
If you can get one of these and it does work for you, it would eliminate the need for wifi calling and you could use one of several recording solutions "as is".
Note: check T-Mobile 's coverage map and get an idea of what they claim their signal quality is for your home address before calling. And just use your best judgement for what you want to tell them. It could also turn out that if you tell them exactly what you told us, they'll be more willing to help you. I'm just not sure on this one. Maybe someone else can chime in with an opinion for you.

I have heard you can get a range extender from your provider which is like a mini-cell tower if you're confirmed to be out of the service area. You'd contact your mobile provider and an have them go over the coverage map with you -- yada yada and they should help you in some way. ESPECIALLY if you threaten to leave them. Don't forget to try that if they give you a hard time.

So true. I've read about 5-10 posts about people doing this.

But for the situation being discussed in this thread, it could be priceless. All that's really needed is the cell signal for voice calls.

@ASharpEdge
I hope everything has been going ok. Just wondering since we haven't heard from you since you opened the thread.
Anyway, an additional small update. I have tried several apps and a couple of roms with no luck. I'm downloading two ICS roms now so will try them tomorrow. They were both two of the best we've had on here in the past, FreeGS3 and FrostyICS. If I can't get it to work on these its going to end up requiring codework that's going to be beyond my ability I'm afraid.
The closest I've come was using Skvalex's Call Recorder. Using the Alsa Mixer as the recording method, it was able to attempt to record, but the file was just dead air. I think its still trying to record off the cell radio, not the wifi radio. All other settings failed to even start.
So I hope you don't mind, but I've posted in Skvalex's thread to ask him about this. I did include your story in hopes that it would have a better chance at sparking a reply, both for solutions and other options. If you do not want me doing this, ill edit it out right away.
Again, I hope all is well and that you and your little girl are staying safe!

I really want to thank all of you for looking into this. I have been praying about it daily. My ex-wifes boyfriend is the one that started all of this. Went to pick up my daughter from her mom and boyfriends and he attacked me while my daughter was getting in the car...she was hysterical watching all of this...I handed my phone to her to call 911 and she couldnt..(to hysterical at the time) Then her mom took the phone from her and would not give it back. I finally was able to get out of the car and managed to grab the phone from my ex-wife and then me and my daughter ran to the street and called the police.
The police came and arrested the boyfriend for battery and my ex-wife for interfering with a 911 call.
Then a week later the boyfriends dad called me twice telling me to drop the charges on his son or he would cut my fu**ing balls off and kill me!
The father is a bit psycho from what my daughter told me and I know that he was in the military and has a wide selection of firearms at his house that is about 2 miles from me.....SO, I immediately called the police on him and they arrested him for verbal assault and interference with a state protected witness.
I am even more concerned about a payback, but I know I did the right thing by calling the police on him.
OK, now everyone knows the story...I am a disabled 45 year old father with a 9 year old daughter....She is scared as am I. I just wanted to have some peice of mind that if I got a call I would have proof besides the call log...
Please do not go out of your way though trying to get this working. I have the Lord Jesus on my side and I fell comfortable that we will be safe in regards to this matter.
To answer your question Doc...I have tried S3Rx 1.5, Dandroid, Wicked v10, and z999...Those I know for sure. I know some people say theirs worked but mine definately does not. The only true way to test it is to be out of range of a cell signal and then try it on wifi.
Again, thank you all and may God bless you and your loved ones!!

Wow....That is a hell of a situation. I am sorry you and your daughter are having to go through all of that. My daughter is 7 and I could only try to imagine what I would be going through if all of that were happening to me. Some people are just really screwed up in the head and, IMO, have no business being in a position of influence over any child. I just hope you are able to get some sort of restraining order and full custody if you dont already have it. Personally, though, I honestly would be arming myself. All too often, the only way to actually Stop a bad guy with a gun, is for a good guy with a gun to intervene.
Anyway, a bit more on topic. My daughter had her meet and greet with her new teacher today so I was gone most all day long. Im making a new nandroid backup now, and will try to test a couple more things out in the next hour or two.
And it really is not a big deal. If I can help find a way to do this, then I just hope it can help give you guys even just a little piece of mind. (No, I am not doing this in response to your thread title btw. I'd rather you spend your money on your daughter, especially if you can get her something or do something for her that can help her get through all of this.)
Oh and consider calling T-Mobile as I mentioned before. It could be a better solution than this and its probably best to try talking to them sooner than later.
Hang in there man! We will keep you guys in our prayers.
Ok, sorry I didnt post yesterday, but I really had nothing new to add unfortunately. I have tried several roms, apps, mods with no luck on this at all.
I am pretty sure it would require someone to modify the code for WiFi Calling to allow recording. And then it would have to also have to be modded to integrate call recording as I don't think this would allow any 3rd party apps to work anyway.
I have sent Skvalex, the developer of Call Recorder on the Play Store an email. I was told he was away and not able to respond in the thread, but he should still be able to receive and reply to his emails about the app. At this point, I am just waiting to see if he has any ideas or if he thinks he might be able to add the functionality to his app. Other than that, I am just not sure of what else I can do right now. Though if I think of anything, I will certainly let you know. And of course, I will post again once I hear back from Skvalex.
I do hope your situation has improved over the last couple of days. I am really sorry I was not able to come up with anything for you. But if there is anything else I can help with, do let me know.
Take care!
Anyone else have any ideas on this issue???
