I'am confused about calibration of the battery after flashing a new ROM.
Do I have to calibrate it every time after flashing or, is it already calibrated?
PS. I wiped out every thing on my phone before flashing a new ROM. I think it would delete everything including battery data and that means it is calibrated, right.
To calibrate the battery, can I use one of the applications on the android market. ( there are a lot of them)
Thank you in advance
PS2. Are there other ways to calibrate the battery?
I had exactly the same thought today as I was flashing my ROM.
I guess it's going to be finding out where the battery stats are stored, if they are somewhere in the areas that get wiped during a ROM flash then yeah, we are probably going to have to wipe the stats at full charge.
I will be watching this to see if anyone else replies.

You should calibrate after a flash, just charge it overnight so its completely full then then use battery calibration app from market or do.it manually using Es file explorer, go to data/system and delete batterystats.bin. restart phone and it will generate a new batterystats.bin file. Job done

Thank you very much for the answer.
Actually, I think that this topic should be warned for new users (like me) so that they will not confuse about the battery life.
There's really no need to wipe the battery stats. A google engineer explains it all here:
http://www.xda-developers.com/andro...-battery-stats-does-not-improve-battery-life/
Hello, the person at Google talk about the "wiping battery stats in order to improve battery life."
That is not the good description.
It should be : "wiping battery stats in order to improve battery calibration."
I would be interested by asking Dianne Hackborn how she explains the fact that the battery level goes straight from 85%~90% to 100% in some HOX ( Mine does ).
"Technically" the Li-Ion just can't have this behaviour at "low rate charge" ...
so this charge graph behaviour is a software behaviour due to some code that adjusts the charge at 100% when battery just can't charge anymore.
Here is an example of a "standard" Li-Ion charge with a good charger :

The black curve is the one we should get on our devices ... I don't get this.

So just deleting the file and rebooting at full will do it? Is there any benefit to something like the following procedure (found from another forum)?
1. Once your phone dies plug it into your HTC charger, (DO NOT TURN IT ON)
2. Let it charger fully (about 3 hours) until you see the light turn green, unplug the phone
3. Turn on the phone on but do not mess with it. (no checking email, messages, etc) let it sit for about 20 to 30 min
4. then plug it in again but let it continue to sleep (about 30 min)
5. once the light is green, unplug and your finished.

I ask because I found it on another forum. My battery life is pretty ****ty right now and I'd like to fix it.
The file is reset when you reach full charge. No need to do anything.

Good info, thanks!
Btw, do you have any info regarding my above inquiry about actually letting the battery drain? Is there any reason that would help moreso than having the file reset?
Alternatively, do you have any other ideas as to what might be causing my (at least perceived) poor battery life? I'm getting maybe 13 hours on a charge with pretty scant use. CM10 Nightlies.
The file and it's contents have no bearing on battery life. It's only there to record which apps and services have been using battery.
If your battery life is short, it's likely you have something preventing the phone from sleeping.
Example; when I'm in China my battery life sucks compared to Hong Kong. I often notice the synching icon in China. I suspect Facebook sync is not timing out (its blocked in China), preventing the phone from sleeping.
Better battery stats from the play store can help you determine this.

Ok, take a loot at this screeny. I think my battery is either super decalibrated, or just bad. I've already let it run until the phone turned off, but I don't want to keep doing that as it's bad for the battery. (Super-saturation is not good for li-ion batteries) Any recommendations?
Edit: How about I actually attach the screenshot?

It's done this for every rom. I'm on virtuous sense 2.0. I clean wipe before every rom, so I don't have the slightest idea what's going on here. Although last night I did test charging my extended battery and it would charge, then drain while still plugged in. I am mega confused.
had the same problem on my stock Dz a few months ago, battery would fluctuate like crazy (would drop to line 15-20% suddenly and then go back to 60% when phone was restarted) wiping battery stats would not fix it. Turned out to be a dud battery htc replaced it and all is fine.
If you want a more technical explanation every battery has a sensor in it which reports voltages to the phone which the phone then interprets as percentage battery left corresponding to the values stored in the battery stats file. Our battery sensor is malfunctioning and reporting weird values to the phone which the phone is showing as fluctuating battery level.
Hope that helps.

So, I had about 50% juice when I went to bed last night. Woke up to see phone dead. Had to plug in charger to start it as battery was fully drained.
So what causes such sudden battery drop?

It seriously looks like some apps have been doing some heavy tasks while youre sleeping..
Check with your nearest dealer. Then contact samsung if you think your battery is faulty
Battery doesnt seem faulty at such an early stage.
Best solution. Download BetterBatteryStats and check out what is draining your battery
Its the solution i would do with myself

I dont even have much apps installed yet. & battery life so far was really good until this morning. Seems quite stange. Has it happened to anyone else?
I don't think that could have been any apps to deplete the battery that quickly. I mean, that literally did a nose dive. Ever heard of Ghosts?!? DunDunDunnnnn
Does battery reset itself somehow?
Yes, an app or some apps drained your battery No other solution possible mate . As mentioned before install BetterBattery Stats and cpu spy and check for unusal app behavior.
The thing that surprises me is that on the steep drop, the green border-line is missing. It doesn't look like drain; it looks more a short circuit...
Its actually not a drain. Its a sudden cut off.

In your case, don't bother with better battery stats or any other that other crap people are suggesting. I don't think the majority of the people who read your post bothered to look at the attached image (or didn't understand it.)
During the time that your battery dropped off, android wasn't even active (as no battery stats were logged.) That drop-off looks to me like some type of system crash or something rebooted your phone into recovery (or download) mode and left it there until the battery died (causing a power down.)
I can't tell you WHY that happened, but I can't think of anything "normal" that would cause it. I used to see something similar when I was doing kernel work on a specific samsung tablet if the user had one of the so-called supercharger scripts installed. In that case, the kernel would panic (wifi bug) and the script had re-written the kernel parameters to cause an infinite loop instead of letting the kernel panic reboot the device. The result was that the device would get warm and drain the battery until there was no more power.
Recovery meant charging the device first and upon finally getting it to boot, the battery page would look similar to yours.
Another possibility is that your phone hit what it THOUGHT it was around 46%, but the battery stopped giving juice.
In your shoes, I'd do something I usually tell other people never to do: Purposely run your battery down below 40% to make sure the same thing doesn't happen. (If it does, consider restoring your phone to stock, testing again, and possibily calling Samsung.)
Good luck

Like the title says...
I pull my phone off the charger at 8AM. By 9AM it still shows 100% and still has the charging icon.
Finally at 10AM it drops to ~67%
It started a few days ago... Previously the charging icon would flash on and off every few minutes...

Is it a bad battery? Maybe the phone is going?
Software issue?
@orb360
Give you're battery the spin test... as for the charging icon staying on... could be a dirty port or a connector touching/bent inside the port itself.. strange that it stops.. I'm not sure..
As for the bad reading and then a huge drop... have you recently changed batteries or flashed a rom... I'm kinda at a loss... I once had my battery read off by about 20 percent and I had to wipe my battery stats in recovery to get it to read right , but that was after I replaced my old battery with a bigger one..
Just my thoughts...
It won't spin much... I had a previous battery about 1.5 months ago inflate and had to replace it... ( It actually popped the back off the phone )
I picked this one up at a Sprint store around that time.
Is there a way to wipe battery stats without a custom recovery flashed? I'm running stock 4.1.2
It's a work phone so I'm not really supposed to be flashing custom stuff to it.

You most likely need a new battery.
Wiping battery stats... Let's just say that if snopes.com were to cover Android, this would have to be one of their first articles. There is a ton of myths about the unicorn-like magic that can result from wiping battery stats. The truth is, the contents of the batterystats bin file basically tell a part of Sec Settings some information in order to make estimates for displaying numbers in your battery stats (literally, in Settings) - details like screen on for two hours, used 40% of battery... wiping battery stats erases those few lines of information, nothing more. It doesn't somehow alter anything inside a battery, or anything else.</soapbox>
If you want to clear battery stats as it were, no harm in giving it a shot, right? It is very easy to do. Every time you charge and then unplug near a full charge you have reset battery stats. That's why it will all say "0" if you look real quick at the battery stats in your settings - poof, battery stats were reset.
You should get a new battery though. Get work to buy it. Cheers.
[Reference one Google developer's article about "wiping battery stats" here: https://plus.google.com/105051985738280261832/posts/FV3LVtdVxPT]
Edit: Wondering how you'd kill batteries so fast. Do you use your phone a lot while it's plugged in by any chance? Like, watch hours of netflix while plugged in? Just trying to think of how you might be cooking things in there perhaps, so... next battery will last longer than six weeks.
Well...
I'll see if a new battery fixes things... At only a month and a half old maybe the Sprint store will replace it no questions... hopefully...
If I turn off the phone and pull the battery...
If all I do is stick the battery in, it acts like it's charging... The "phone is off" battery charging screen comes on for a few seconds.. Then it shuts off and comes back on. Repeatedly.
So it can't be a software thing if the phone's not even turned on right?

That part is correct. Bad charging port can certainly do that, but the erratic charge status reported as in your previous posts wouldn't be because of a bad charging port, so I do not think your problem is that part of the hardware... It sounds like "classic" bad battery. I would certainly try to argue/plea/demand a replacement battery from Sprint given the short life it had. I don't know off hand their warranty on that sort of purchase, but I'd bring my I-mean-business to the store for sure. I do know they have some discretion at the store level. I'd go in anyway - show them what it's doing, bring the receipt from the battery you just bought, and hopefully get a fix. If there's some other miscellaneous hardware problem creating these problems, it's no longer within my knowledge sphere, lol. Good luck. :good:
I got a different battery to test with and the issues persist
(The charging while disconnected and unable to power on without being connected to a power source)
I've read cleaning the charging port with alcohol might help...
If that doesn't work I'm just going to send it back for a refurb.

Yes, in the past under 15% no flash. It was tweaked to 5% before. I forget if its the app, framework, or kernel. I am sure it will get tweaked when devs get the phone and start hacking away.

Business as usual. Most phones do this. Be glad they do this.
At 15% or below, the voltage of the battery is really low and if you use flashlight, which uses a lot of power = voltage goes down rapidly. And your phone "dies" quickly.
I'm totally fine with my phone dying right after I take this picture! I just want to take this goddamn picture with a flash.

Well good luck charging your phone with non-removable battery if the voltage dips too low.
There's a reason for these limitations and you don't wanna discharge lithium ion batteries past a certain point.
And that's not something which is hard to do with lithium's, if the voltage actually goes too low, the charging circuitry won't necessarily "recognize" the battery at all and refuse to charge.
Maybe there's some amount of trickle charge present so if you keep the phone connected it might be able to revive the battery (bump the voltage high enough for the charge circuit to work)
Though the chances of this are relatively low because most charging circuits are waaaay smarter these days and if there's some amount of trickle charge present, the current is so low it might not have any effect on the voltage of the battery..
But if you end up in that kind of situation, there's already permanent damage done to the cell (battery) and it will affect the battery life negatively.
And I wouldn't necessarily even want to attempt to revive a lithium ion battery which is wrapped around aluminium....

While you're technically correct it doesn't matter at all.
Phones are idiot proof. If the battery reaches a critical low the phone will shut down.
I doubt that a flash would use so much energy that a battery at 15% would instantly die from it.
AFAIK voltage is pretty persistent until it reaches 5%
It's 3.7V right now at 18%, I'll take a look at 5% and below.
Edit: here it is.
Drops below 3.6V after 3%
I think 5% is a good threshold for blocking flash....15% was probably based on state of affairs 5 years ago. Its another case of software not getting tuned to the times.

So you say now....until your phone dies because of constant snapping, and it doesn't have time to actually process the photos. While it may not take it very long to process the photos, a sudden death might result in a loss of quality.

The battery meter isn't that accurate, its just an estimation based on the battery voltage versus how you use your phone (and the resulting "typical" battery drain). You shouldn't expect it to be accurate to the being within the 1-2 (or even 5) percent range. Shutting off at 4 to 11% is not unusual, and not surprising.
You shouldn't be draining your battery down that low on a regular basis. Its bad for long term battery life. Good rule of thumb for Li ion batteries is short and frequent charge cycles.
However, optimizing apps and/or google process stopped after a shutdown (due to low battery) is not normal. That's a different matter.
I have this problem, plus some of my settings get reset such as my wallpaper, ringtone, notification tone, boomsound (off to on), screen timeout, screen brightness, whatsapp (keeps asking me to chose my backup options and no messages come through until then). This has never happened before and I'm not sure why it's only happening now. I'm not purposely trying to drain the battery or anything, it's just that sometimes on the road I am unable to charge it and it'll just die out midway when previously, that extra 15% could've lasted me for another 30 minutes, just enough for me to reach my destination.
The same problem.. But the bigger problem for me, it's reseting my settings..
It is a terrible problem , I return to KitKat and my battery reaches 1% , and so normal ... I'll make a test with lollipop .
Yes, same problem! So glad someone made a thread for it. It's frustrating and happens literally every time.
Experienced on both the stock and a custom rom. Any one knows any fixes? Is it because of the 'battery life reduces over time' thing? My phone is 2 years old now

That seems to be a problem with all htc ones (m7, m8, m9) as they get older, dont worry its normal
ive been experiencing this for a while, clear dalvik cache and let android do the whole rebuilding thing at the start and you should be fine...as for the battery fix ive just learnt to live with it, 15% is the new 2%!!!
I'm on this problem since a lot of time, as i was one of the first in the community to report it.
Seems like an end-of-life issue for one m8 and htc one phones line.
In my case i had a camera and charge board issue too, so in rma htc changed them, and now the phone is charging and quick-charging like it must have to. But i have to be careful when near 15% of battery because using camera, flashlight or others power-expensive features instantly turns the phone off, causing a database mismatch on the next boot (for marshmallow) and consequently the loss of data.
If the instant-poweroff occurs during boot, there is a massive loss of data and a lot of force closes on the next boot.
Nothing to do here i think, sadly.
In kitkat and lollipop battery reach at 1% ...

I have a fix for this as it happened to me and I tried a battery calibration app from the app store... I thought what your thinking now but after finding bad sectors and "repairing" it did actually work
solve the problem of battery and loss of settings , change the battery of my htc, now everything is fine , 3 days that the battery is discharged properly , I hope this information will help someone.
thats kinda "cool" to see many people have same problem as i do. atleast it wont run u crazy as before
1. sometimes phone dies when battery is 15%, and sometimes it dies when around 4% 2% or even 1%
2.resetting settings after phone dies!
so is the solution, to change battery? any better way that doesnt need to spend money?
Replace battery
how did you do this? does this actually work?

Yes I've done this a couple of weeks back. The replacement is actually less hard as it seems.
But finding an original replacement battery seems to be pretty hard - Even though the replacement I bought is HTC branded and looks genuine, I feel like it's actually draining a little faster than my old original. 12€ Ebay had too good to be true.
However the instant-shutoffs are now a thing of the past along with the database corruption, so I'm going to have to live with a little less battery life.
Or does anyone know of a provider for genuine batteries?
