[Q] yellow triangle when flashing some roms... - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Hello. I cannot seem to flash the [ROM] Frankenstein's Ego 4.5 (FE16 ICS)(S Voice Patch)☼ 5/21/2012.
I was on [ ROM ] Calkulin's E4GT 2 v1.5 [ ICS l FD26 l Tweaked l Battery Saver Script ] prior.
I followed the instructions and odin to el26 kernel using the StockCWM-EL26.tar.md5. I wiped everything, reboot and get the yellow triangle and it loops me into the android recovery. I've even tried using the one click odin back to gingerbread, to flash the new rom. still the triangle. Please advise.

When you flash a custom kernel through ODIN it sets off the triangle this is normal. The phone will not boot with an ICS rom and GB kernel, you are flashing this to use recovery on a gingerbread kernel rather than risk a brick. You did everything correctly.
You ODIN the EL26 kernel causing the triangle, because it is the safest way to flash both the kernel and to move from where your at to where you are going. You use this kernel to flash your next ICS rom or even a GB one and once you reboot your phone should work but have the triangle.
The triangle will only go away with a USB jig, or on ICS you can use the Triangle away app which can be gotten from the market for cheap or for free if you look around XDA as the developer is only asking for support, not forcing it.

hi. thank you for the reply. im not concerned with the yellow triangle. its just that, the phone will only boot to the android recovery after flashing the frankenstein 4.5 rom. i cannot boot into the rom at all. this has happened with a couple other roms i wanted to try. i ended sticking with calkulin 1.5 ics rom cause it was the only one i could get to boot.

Yeah I can not tell you what is wrong with the particular rom I have not tried it. But everything else you are doing so far is correct. Flashing the EL26 through ODIN, booting to recovery, flash Calkulin's format all (preferable method) and then flash the rom. Added step for AOSP roms is to flash gapps.
Since you are on Calk's you can get rid of the triangle using triangle away if you are broke just find chainfire's thread or if you want to support him grab it from the market. But as you say not the real problem here.

I did a one click recovery with FE16 with CW mod then flashed the Rom following the rules and the yelow trianle went away.

How to re-install CWM after new ROM install

Been running Blend from Team Noc for a bit and having a lot of core crashes, as well as some issues with notifications, etc. So I installed Blend 6.0 this morning and still had problems so wanted to try something else while those issues get fixed.
I went into recovery and this is a new recov I have never seen. It simply shows the android, then the following;
Android System Recovery <3e>
I was going to wipe using Caulk's and install another ICS ROM, so went to apply update from external storage (since that was the only option that made sense). Went to the folder they were, selected the format all and it took me back to the android guy on his back with a triangle!
So I am kinda stuck with this ROM unless I can get cqm back on (I guess). There are just so many threads that are out there, some old, some new, the sg2 has 5 flavors it seems based on the carrier (I am on sprint) so from what I can tell, it's the 4G touch.
Thanks to all read/replies.
use odin, instructions here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1609255
Just use mobile odin and select the tar file w/recovery. You tried to boot into recovery without a recovery installed which is why it looked funny.
Thanks guys. I followed the 1st post (as I didn't see the 2nd) and ran the step's using a windows machine. Odin saw the device, flashed it, all green, success, and restarted.
Followed up with the quick root/CWM app and worked like a charm. I am back to square one now, did install Venum Ice RC3.1.1 which looked pretty clean, but 1st thing I noticed was anything that uses the media card doesn't work (camera for example). You hit it, returns you to the app drawer.
So, with what's out there right now, what seems to be the most stable with the basic's, (phone, data, camera, etc.)
Thanks again, was well worth the wait to do it correctly!
I've been using CM9A3 as my everyday from. Solid as a rock. I have 0 issue.

I am also on Team Noc's The Goodness Version 6 without a custom recovery, and have a similar question. In that thread they were discussing using Odin to flash a kernel with CM, and they posted two kernals one that is the FD02 (ICS) and the other is EL29 (GB). I am currently on an ICS rom that works with the newly flashed FD02 kernal. However, my question is while on ICS can I odin to the GB recovery kernal so that I can flash a different GB rom? I am nervous to try because I have heard of people bricking going from ICS to GB, but if this works it would make my life easier as a flashaholic

Use Mobile Odin to flash EL26+cwm kernel( http://db.tt/0QJkleJR ), hold volume^+power to boot into cwm wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvick, flash rom, flash gapps, and reboot. People brick from using a ICS recovery to go back from certain ROMs. EL26+cwm is always the safest choice to flash with.

Yes you can mobile odin the el26 repack with cwm (not the rogue one) I believe its still at the top of the Nocturnal Venum rom thread. Flash in cwm and as it boots hold down the volume and power buttons. It should boot into the blue cwm. Flash whatever you want. Or mobile odin the el26 repack cwm and as it reboots hold the same buttons down to boot into recovery and flash away. El29 doesnt have a cwm repack (its rogue and not what you need). Keep in mind that mobile odin WILL NOT flash modem so dont try it.
Edit: The post above says basically the same thing. DO NOT use el29 kernel. Just reminding you...

Thanks for the quick response! Just a clarification, I do have the el26+CWM (el29 was a typo). Lets say I want to leave ICS for another rom, and a use mobile odin to go back to el26 and accidentally boot into my ICS sandwich rom. Is there any potential risk of bricking there? Also, what is the significance of flashing a modem? I already have an EL29 modem and I am happy with the current setup, do most roms/kernals have baked in modems? And if so should I avoid them when using odin?

You can't boot into a ICS ROM on el26 it is a GB kernel. Every ROM I have used has baked in kernel but no modem. Any modem for e4gt will work with any ROM. Kernels are GB and ICS specific.
Edit:el26+cwm is juts safer to flash ICS ROMs/kernels. When you flash a ROM it will replace the kernel. Just use mobile odin to flash back to el26+cwm to flash new ROMs/modems(wiping like usuall). If changing modem just flash el26+cwm, wipe cache/dalvik, flash modem of choice, and flash ICS kernel of choice. Reboot.

Thanks for the tips that makes a lot of sense! I am gaining confidence of going between ICS & GB. Now is it the same process for roms like AOKP, MIUI, and CM7/9? I have heard they also need specific recoveries to operate correctly.
Yes, el26cwm only and they only use aosp kernels. I believe T.C.P. has them on one of his threads.

[Q] Installing ICS CWM

I just upgraded my E4GT Sprint from GB to ICS using the oneclick installer. I am trying to install the CODENAME rom from CWM but havng issues getting CWM installed. I used the the E4GT auto but FE16 isnt listed so i tried FE15 but it wont load into CWM. So i tried this link "http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1390393" and flashed from ODIN and it goes into CWM but before it boots it says my phone is a gt-i9100 and has a ! on the bottom. It appears to boot though so i booted back into CWM and tried to flash the ZIP for CODENAME and the gapps file and it jsut gets stuck at the boot screen with the transformer logo. I cant get into CWM after that point and have to ODIN back to ICS. I am on ICS now and its working fine. Does anyone have any instructions on getting CWM installed and the codename rom from a fresh odin ICS install?

You really should read more before hopping around like that without checking. Real risk for a brick here.
-Flash EL26 stock CWM kernel via the PDA option in ODIN/Mobile ODIN
-When phone begins reboot, Hold Power + Volume up until boots into recovery.
-Wipe data/factory, cache and dalvik cache
-Flash ROM
-Flash Gapps
-Reboot
Those are the instructions right from the developer's thread. This is an AOSP rom and it sounds like you're trying to install TW kernels.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1662295
This is the kernel repository. It links to each kernel where you can read further and find out if they are safe for flashing things.
Seems like you've done a bunch of stuff. But you really should do a whole bunch of reading first or you will brick your phone.
My suggestion would be to use sfhub's one-click http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1705730 to get to a fully stock rooted device. Then use his autoroot package http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728 to add CWM (the lates in the package is FF11+CWM Agat I believe) then you can add Agat's latest kernel with CWM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1721065
But I would be very careful when flashing ANY ROM; use the developers prefered method. Some recommend using EL26 CWM. Some a different recovery or procedure. Be especially careful with CM9 and AOKP builds to follow the directions there.
Good luck
So while i was waiting for a response i just went back to the stock GB using the one click install. I then used the autoroot package to install CWM and then restored my nandroid backup before i made in the very beginning. So my phone is back to a perfect state with GB and CWM installed. Can i just flash the ROM from CWM as is then? For some reason i thought it had to be "converted" to ICS and thats what started this whole mess. Things have changed since my old Evo
I just noticed that im running EL29 not 26...does that matter? When i try to flash that CMW EL26 stock root is when it gave me that gt-i9100 on boot and the ! at the bottom. Using the autoroot and choosing the EL29 Rogue is the only way i got it installed.

My friend some good suggestions above your post. Give yourself a day or two and do some reading prior to flashing. This way you may not end up at Sprint making up stories about why your phone wont boot up.
Let me just echo what everybody else has said, you're gotta read more. A lot more! If you're one goal is to get CNA in your phone I would recommend reading all of the very first post on that thread. They give step by step instructions.
If you need CWM there are several options to get it on your phone. Both sfhub and I have put together several one-click and automated options to get it on your phone.
One thing that hasn't been suggested yet but I would strongly encourage you to do is to read the "How Not To Brick Your E4GT" thread. It's sticked in the General section.
Good luck!
Two more things.
1) If you're going to ask for help give it a few minutes before trying something new. It takes people a minute to reply. Sometimes waiting that extra minute or two is all you need to be saved from bricking.
2) Don't be afraid to hit your thanks button for everyone who has offered advice already. I got them once for you but it might not hurt to do it again.

having issues getting rid of the yellow triangle

Recently rooted my epic 4g touch to install the mijjz goodness rom but when i go to the file to load the zip it starts and then gives me the errormessage... Pls someone help me fix this i really want the mijjz rom!! Also what does he yellow triangle mean and how do i get rid of it
Before we can help you, we need to know a few things What Rom are you currently on? What Recovery are you trying to use to flash the new Rom? What Kernel are you using (available in Settings, About). Also, is your phone currently able to boot up?
The Yellow triangle comes when you are using a Kernel that is not the factory default. You can either make/buy a boot jig to remove it, or use the Triangle Away App, but it can only be used on ICS based Roms, and may very well brick (temporarily or permanently break) your device. Use it at your own risk. It is very risky.

If you are on GB I would flash el26 direct boot kernel. it will boot you right into recovery. if you are getting an error message i would try to redownload the rom from your computer and then transfer it to your SD card. Also get Agat63's kernel here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1767421 After you flash the direct boot kernel, wipe everything, you can use calkulins format all. which is at the bottom of the Miji ICS page first post. then install the Rom usual fashion. before you boot up flash agat63's kernel. now you will have a safe recovery to flash from and some nice tweaks if you want to under volt or over clock. It will take a little while to boot up, your phone is building the delvik cache which takes a little while. after that you should be good to go. Have fun, safe flashing. (make sure you read and follow the op directions)
Edit: use triangle away after you flash to reset you counter. That's causing the yellow triangle. Sorry forgot to add that in the first time.

How do i install AGAT recovery on GB27 rooted?

Hey guys i just installed a GB27 rom and i am rooted by i cant find how to install a custom recovery like cwm or agat? how do i do this?
There are tutorials in the stickies of the development and general sections.
You will need to flash the GB27 stock kernel back once you are done with flashing whatever tweaks or mods you want.

Currently there is only a repack kernel and you do not want to stay on that for long... but here it is just flash it in Odin (or mobile Odin) and reboot into recovery. also, you may want to DL the stock kernel and flash that after your done flashing in AGATS.

I know there's a lot of information in the thread link in the quote you posted, but it discusses the known issue of the boot loops and the efforts to get the source kernels and the CWM/tRec recovery issues resolved.
With that being said; You're doing the right thing by using a known working recovery to bypass that issue when you want to reset and/or wipe.
Keep paying attention to that thread as Garwynn is working on it, and narrowing it down, and Agat will join in when he gets back.
I would suggest going back and reading that thread in it's entirety.
Long story short, something changed in GB27 versus other builds that causes data to be wiped in a way that permissions are not set properly and the kernel panics, resulting in said boot loop.
Here's the good news - the file system itself appears to be fine because I did a before/after and it can create files. Just throws all sorts of permission errors. If I can get a cable from home (and time at work today) I might build a test kernel without panic set in the fstab and for testing only. If not will have to wait until tomorrow for me to test.

[ Issue Fixed] Error 7 + Custom Recovery w/ Kernel

Alright so i've searched google forums, yahoo, bing you name it i've tried. So i'm here today posting my issue.
i've done everything possible and did all of the recommended instructions to installing a rom / flashing
a custom kernel compatible with the rom, so far this is what i did and has happened to me.
E4GT ( Sprint ) on stock rooted GB27 w/ agat's source kernel 1.3.0.
Mobile Odin'd EL26 to flash the FL24 modem ( I wanted to try some AOSP roms and needed Data )
installed ExtendRom's AoCP through DirectBoot EL29 CWM5. ( I used tdunham's x2 jb wipe before i flashed )
The phone booted up all the way, custom recovery from Extends AOCP rom was working fine when i accessed it.
Forgotten to do a PRL / Profile update for the fl24 modem.
so I nandroid back to GB27 rom, updated PRL and profile.
Reflashed AOCP using jb 2x wipe beforehand. and i gotten the buildprop error for SPH-D710 Sprint / D710BST / D710GC01
like flashing it didn't even recognized the phones model number, then at the end goten the Error status ( 7 ) which I know some times
the file is a bad download. But I haven't gotten the buildprop error before.
So i PC Odin'd stock rooted reset data for GB27 and for some reason now it wont let me install AOSP based roms and flash a custom recovery for the rom its built for. I've been flashing Agat's source built gb27 1.3.0 and sxtp's source built with agat recovery 0.5.0.
When ever i flash AOSP its the buildprop error with Status ( 7 ) and im always nandroiding back to stock rooted GB27.
When I try and flash a custom recovery for TW JB GB27 both mobile odin and PC Odin my phone gets stuck at the
Samsung Galaxy II screen ( The very first boot image before the actual boot animation. )
I can PC odin and Mobile odin the EL26CWM5 and EL29's DirectBoot Kernel just fine. But the problem is it can only flash
TW JB roms like its locked to that specific rom for flashing only.
When i flash a few tw jb roms like SGSIV or kobridge's tweaked. The roms built in kernels are not replacing the stock original kernel
like its locked.
So if anyone wants to try and help me troubleshoot my issue, that'd be awesomeness.
This is my current setup for now.
E4GT on update GB27. ( ROOTED )
ROM - Kobridge's DeOdexed Rom.
Modem / Baseband - GB27
Software version - GB27
Kernel - Official Stock GB27 ( Can't install custom or my phone wont even go past the first boot screen )
Thankies for replies.
Go to the modem repository in Android development get the gb27 tar and flash in Odin or mobile Odin, it's not booting because the kernels you said you flashed aren't jellybean kernels.
Edit: last time I used any of the jb tw roms they were keeping the stock kernel. As you probably already know this phone when flashing roms doesn't keep the recovery you were on, it uses what is packed into the kernel.

Stock kernel with custom recovery? Ive been trying to flash agats source kernel n recovery but it
just doesn't seem to want to stay >_<
And the modem / base is already on gb27
Every time you flash a new rom you get the recovery that is with that rom, so after flashing the jb tw roms you will have to Odin or mobile Odin the recovery, in your case you said your wanting agat
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
That's the issue. Even with the roms that have custom recovery, the stock official will still stick.
Like TBSGIV, It's already using Agat's source, But the Kernel + Recovery is still stock official when I
flash it.
Also I've never had the yellow triangle when i booted up my phone before and the flash counter never has
been ticked when i install recoveries via mobile or PC odin, but it's starting to tick the counter and the yellow triangle only shows
up when I try booting into recovery.
Also I'm trying to look for a kernel + recovery that disables stock recovery flash like how kobridge's rom has it. But I forgot which one
was it.

didn't want to cooperate with me.
