Previous threads about the update were solely about how it's not ICS, which is why they were locked.
If this thread is simply going to be about the update itself then it's fine but if it descends into ICS-related discussion, it'll end up locked as well.

Readers digest version:
I started with rooted stock.
I pushed the MD5 tar file posted in the ICS thread via Odin successfully.
I lost root.
I re-rooted successfully via the Odin method (push CWM to phone via Odin, then flash superuser)
I saw a link in the ics thread to an Odin file for the update. Has anyone tried it yet. I just want to make sure I'm not gonna brick if I use it. I'm not worried about losing root. That's easy enough to get back. Thanks
Never mind dude above me posted answer as I posted my question.

Bit of info on it from me, running it non-rooted:
- Scrolling Wallpaper Disabled in TouchWiz - install this app to fix it. Root not required
- Carrier IQ still detected (Lookout)
- Battery life seems the same
- Better phone answer screen which is more responsive
- Slightly different lock screen when not using a pattern, pin, or password
- Faster widget responses (no more waiting 10-12 seconds after touching "brightness" in stock power widget)
- Apps seem to open faster, possible updated java platform for speed improvements, or perhaps due to Qualcomm driver update
- Noticeable improvement in multitasking while on a call
- Faster homescreen changing thanks to Qualcomm driver update
- No call echo
- No general 'stutter' in performance that affected previous revisions thanks to Qualcomm driver update
- Touchscreen more accurate - This is hard to prove but overall I find I'm doing things more accurately since this update
- Power off time still the same
- Power on time slightly improved (by about 2 seconds)
- Quadrant benchmark results: 3359 (about the same as before) and of course, proof of said score: http://i.imgur.com/WCek0.png (Note: Benchmarks do not necessarily reflect on day-to-day general use)
Qualcomm update/patch seems to be a prerequisite for incoming ICS update
Updated to include hotfix for scrolling wallpaper (thank you BRKotucs), also bolded both bad things about the update to make them more visable. Pros still outweigh cons

I think they did a lot of updates that are included with ICS in this latest build. Just as smooth as the ICS leaks. KL1 was always so choppy and laggy, can't believe this is coming out of my mouth (fingers?) but I'm staying stock until official ICS. I've had over 10 Android phones, and I've never seen a stock ROM run so smooth.

Not sure why but the .tar file is followed by a .md5 extention, so I just removed it and it became a .tar, just for others to know, thanks
the md5 extension is so you know it hasnt been messed with, and so you know the download is not corrupt...
odin flashes md5s and checks the downloads...
What would be the benefit of flashing this versus your other similar kernel? Sorry if this is a stupid question....
Thank you so much. This is perfect. Do have a question. Does this have a new version of cwm or the same one from yesterday? I ask cause the back soft button wasn't working and the storage mounts were reversed. Just checking to see if that has been fixed.

It is the same just without root and busybox. He made it for those of us that prefer having root controlled at the system level versus the kernel. You don't lose anything either way. If you use this you have to make sure you are running an already rooted rom. There is less conflict by doing this since most, if not all, roms are already rooted.

Once again thanks for you help. One last stupid question before I retire from stupidity, but how do I know which way I am rooted? I thought the only way to root was FROM the kernel. I ask because I'm specifically on midnight rom v2 and have no clue which way I'm rooted.
Is there any way someone could upload a mirror to a different site? I'm wanting to flash this but I'm at work and my company is blocking the site that the link is for. If you can that would be awesome if not, no big deal. I'll try and get it when I get home.
Edit: Nevermind. Managed to get it from my phone.
I can up it to megaupload if that helps Tiffany.

Just curious, if someone has flashed chris' previous kernel, what benefit is there supposed to be? Is it not the same stock kernel with some tweaks? Especially if you're concerned with losing root. Not singling anyone out, just curious as to the rationale.

Because kernels that have forced copying of root & busybox cause issues when you start using complete custom ROMs because they overwrite files that are already included. Plus if your including a custom recovery, what the point of including root, etc when the user can now flash what they want?
Also, Chris, the recovery you have included in this won't mount the internal storage or even make a backup to it or recover, it only wants to use the external sd card and since I don't use one because of the delay it causes coming from sleep, I can't do anything except test flash stuff
I flashed this around noon and once my phone rebooted, I updated my 'profile' under 'about phone'. Everything seemed fine, an hour later...I had a LOS, rebooted and got it back, an hour later, same thing...LOS. Rebooted and I updated the profile again, it's fine for now.
Do we have to update profile every time we do a reboot??
Didn't have any issues when in stock.

if you use just the update.zip, you won't lose data and you could just pull your sd card and put the zip on there, then update. Or use something like dropbox and pull it to your phone that way. Lots of options to avoid using USB.

As of right now T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S3 known as SGH-T999UVLEM is upgrading to a newer Version which is SGH-T999UVLH2
I don't think the over the air (OTA) mode is working right now because I did many tries and it keep saying device up to date so if you want to try it us KIES. if you version of KIES is not up to date you will have to update it first then you will be able to upgrade the phone.
it will take about 10 to 15 minutes of your time and it will depend on your connection.
everything like root will be gone after the update. :victory:
ok after you update, you will be able to go back and use the same method you use to to root the older version and install a different boot.
mine is working fine I don't find any problem yet.

Just reflash the custom recovery in Odin and flash the root file. Unless you mean not good for those that are running custom ROMs then that's a different story.
do the developers here give the okay to update to this, for those of us who are fully stock and not rooted? will we be able to get root easily still(with the same methods), even after this update?

That's the Windows 98 diagnostic approach "re-install the OS and see if that fixes it"
Are you saying it works fine for you?
I'm just curious... what are the improvements? I haven't seen that question yet
I hear you, no one is reporting anything about the update and I'm wondering if it's even worth doing. I wouldn't mind updating but sometimes you don't get the results and blind updates makes me wonder anyways.
Just going from memory so may leave something out. Its been mentioned but its scattered due to so many threads about the update.
New kernel, new radio (some report grand improvements), camera updated and has new features, reportedly better stability and battery, brightness slider added to notification window.,....ugh, damn now I'm blanking out on this! I know there's more, just escaping me at the moment. Ill post more when I think of it.

On sprints website it actually show these updates are old and not new and there's two more recent ones he never got pushed to him. Right now the phone is on LG2 and won't update any further. What do I need to do to be up to date with root. Should I just look for a way to root this build or try updating it. By the way I haven't seen any root methods for this build which is why I'm asking. The method he used to root it in the first place should work again. Try that.
Then once it's rooted again go to this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1904099
Download the file "LI3 STOCK WITH AUTO COUNTER RESET" in the first post and flash the file in recovery. That will put the phone to 100%stock, unrooted, on the latest build.
From that point, if he wants to, he can reroot the phone and install the latest TWRP recovery. After that, tell him not to accept any OTA updates. Come back here to the development forum and someone will have the update in flashable form so that root isn't lost.

Yup thats the most easy way of doing it. you say ur not rooted but do you have custom recovery? If so then re rooting before the flash wouldn't be necessary.
It will not wipe data however its recommended that you do. granted it will probably work just fine if it being installed over top of a stock Rom. Then to keep root/recovery just follow the instructions in the post

On my phone I just deal with the Odin OC which don't mess with your counts and come rooted then mobile Odin for the rest. Never have to worry about a flash count. Q] Did Husband root my phone and help getting it back to normal.
First off...Let's just say I have not had good luck with rooted phones. My husband has rooted my phones in the past and eventually I end up with more problems than what stock gave me.
He said he manually upgraded my phone to Jelly Bean(this is about a month or so ago)
To prove to me he didn't root it, he showed me it was not rooted on Rootchecker lite.
At first he had issues getting the gps to work, etc. Then he told me it was all set. However I cannot screen shot(power and volume down)
I want to put the phone back to how it was..Which is normal, before he manually upgraded. Now that Jelly Bean is OTA, I'd rather go that root. He tells me the Jelly Bean he put on mine is an earlier developer version. Anyway here is the info on my phone. Please help me figure out if its rooted and how to get it back to normal. When I wrote him and asked him, "Since you didn't rom my phone, I can just factory reset and it will go back to normal right?". He basically wrote me back from work saying he will not take responsibility if I screw my phone up. UM HELLO. I did nothing to the phone..he did.
Here are the specs. This is from Sprint

Thanks in advance..
First things first, if you are on stock try power and the home key for screenshot. And if you use a root checker, it will tell you if you see rooted or not. What I can tell from the info provided is that there is a more current version of jb than what you are running now. If you are on Sprint, it's GB27, Boost is GC01, VM is GB28. You can use PC Odin to flash the latest stock, unrooted, restore, from Rwilco12's repo. Simply use Google and the search function read, read, and read, and it's pretty straight forward. If you get stuck, let us know . But from the language of your OP, you know what you're doing! Good luck

First sorry for your bad luck on rooted phones, you kinda have to know what your doing
Looking at the software version, he installed a jb leak GB08 , but the official number should be GB27
Laughing at you while eating Jellybeans
So I would have to use ODIN to get the latest version of JB?
Yes I know some stuff. Last time he rooted my phone, I went and unrooted it. I think he tends to get me the unstable ones.

Laughing at you while eating Jellybeans
That's the easiest way, since you said that Kies is giving you issues. That will get your the latest, unrooted, stock, there is.

I've tried that too with power and home screen. It does not work.
The root checker said it wasn't rooted.
Thanks for your help. I will let you know if I can handle it.

Good luck

Well it looks like you were/are on a leaked build. I had issues with GPS on all JB builds unitl the GB27 build - the one that turned into the actual realease build.
If you wish to get to stock (rooted or not - you have the option to download and flash either), go herehttp://www.sxtpdevelopers.com/showthread.php?t=166 grab the appropriate One-Click. There are four versions - Stock wipe data(restore), Stock preserve data, Stock Rooted wipe data(full restore) and Stock Rooted preserve your data (no data).
Insturctions are very simple but explicit.
This will give you Stock ROM, Stock Kernel, and Modem. All in one shot. After install you should also update the PRL and Profile (System Settings>System Updates>...)
I'd at least go for the stock rooted. - benefits of having a rooted phone are too numerous not to. But that is your choice.
Good luck
Crap..I forgot. Odin only works on PC huh? I have a macbook air.

Hmmm, yeah, well in that case try Heimdall. Not as common, but works with Mac. Again it's in the threads Google Heimdall for Mac. Same principle, works the same, pretty much.

Pp.
Sent from a jelly bean shooting Epic. In your eye ....... phone.
The screen shot is really touchy- it doesn't always happen the first time. It just took me three tries to get one, and it's the same on all the jellybean builds I've tried- GB08, GB27 and GC01. Good luck to you.
You have to hold them for a few seconds. It works every time for me on GB27.

Yeah, if you don't hit them exactly at the same time, you'll be adjusting volume or seeing your power menu but like Gray said, just give it a free sec, or if you want to stay rooted(which I recommend, you can always download Tdunham's All in one Mod, that has screenshot option in the power menu

If you're seeing volume slider you're doing it wrong. On jellybean volume down plus power button was removed. Now it's just home + power button.

Lol, no, I am aware of that. I misspoke, thank you for catching me on that. I meant to point out that if you're not hitting the home and power at the same time, it will show power menu or go home. Thanks again for pointing that out. My error(I said it right in my head, does that count? Lol):beer:

Thank you all with your patience with me. Have seen some stuff on here where newbies get chastised for not knowing things. You can't learn without asking questions, right?
