Would someone mind explaining the advantages of each one over the default as loads have suddenly popped up and it's a new area for me? (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1654982)
I am using faux kernel with ARHD and it is working flawlessly and i have now better battery life.
Use the repacked version of faux kernel.
Why everyone didnt just sit round an e-table and make one 'amazing' kernel instead of there being loads is beyond me, but this could be a good thread.
like most, my One X is my daily driver and swapping out Roms/kernels and mods isnt something i have the time to do.
Faux' has been attributed to better battery life, and it would be nice to know what the other kernels offer in difference to stock.
The changelogs mean nothing to anyone who doesnt understand what an I/O scheduler is, if you know what i mean.
Paul
You can ask the same about the problems with multiple linux distros. I think this is a open source thing.

I have scoured the intarwebs and I have briefed myself on these beautiful kernels.
Now this may be a noob question, and I apologize ahead of time for it..
BFS Kernel #5 & CFS Kernel #7
Are the two aforementioned kernels an Either/or type deal ? or can they be flashed together ( one after the other)..
This shows how much i know about kernels..... Can there only be ONE kernel in a ROM ?
Please help..
Thank you,
John
Only one kernel at a time, and you can flash one or the other. The BFS stands for "Brain **** Scheduler" and these kernels also include HAVS (hybrid adaptive voltage scaling) to increase battery life by regulating the voltage sent to the processor when commands are sent to it (or something like that). These kernels are newer than the non-BFS ones. I started running a BFS kernel on Saturday and am very happy with it. I just flashed #5 over #4 today and it is also working well. I was reluctant to try a BFS kernel because I was quite happy with the way my phone was running previously, but my curiosity got the better of me. I do notice a slight improvement in battery life with the newer kernel.
Hope this helps.
Any suggestions as to the best Kernel for CM Nighlies?

I've tried them all and the only difference is that with Koush's kernels the built in wifi tether works. Besides that I have not noticed anything different.
I think the built in is just fine these days.
Keeping in mind that i dont overclock, I think the built in kernel is the fastest (34's according to linpack) and most stable whilst KK's BFS #2 is the least stable.
When it comes to battery charge/drain... I have no clue.
I really wish we had more kernel devs. KK is busy with his sammy and no one else is making kernels for us that use the new tech i see in the other forums.
Hey,
So sorry for what probably seems like a dumb question. I'm usually a Vibrant guy, but I'm helping a buddy out with a G2/looking at the feasibility of getting one myself. I know at least for the Vibrant our normal kernels don't play nice with our version of CyanogenMod 7. I was curious if the same held true here? Or can I flash any kernel? Also, I see that there are different types based on the type of ROM, which is a new thing to a Vibrant owner. So can anyone recommend me a kernel? I'm pretty decent on flashing and all that, and recovering a brick (at least with my Vibrant). Basically I want the best bottom-line performance. I don't need extra bells and whistles, just a nice high clock frequency. Thanks!

If you're looking for a kernel for CM7, the kernel included is quite snappy though I personally run pershoot's kernel as he undervolts and has some other tweaks which improves responsiveness *and* battery life, at least for me.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
CM7 already comes with its own custom kernel (which also supports some overclocking), so no need to flash a separate kernel if you don't want to. But as already mentioned, pershoot's works well too.
You can't flash any kernel. Some are Sense specific, and some are for non-Sense ROMs. Flashing the wrong one for your ROM can apparently brick the phone, so read thru the threads for the ROM and kernel you are interested in, to be sure. The ROM developer will usually have kernel recommendations, or you can see what kernels users of that ROM have tried.
Like stated above you will need to read the instructions and notes on the kernel thread. CM7 has special requirements. Other Roms don't need. but be very careful on what you flash!
Hey guys. I'd like to know what kernel you think suits you best. I'm looking for both subjective answers and objective answers. Which of the following suits you best?
Franco kernel
Trinity kernel
Faux kernel
Glados kernel
Stock CM kernel
Other
Please post a comment explaining why you have chosen the way you did. Feel free to discuss any kernel and also share your phenomenal tips and tricks.
glados for:
best compromise (for me)for performance\battery
fully featured like many others kernels but.....most of these features came from glados's dev,and then others dev implement it,love liveOC and is the unique with that feature, the dev is very gentle and available, the kernel can be adjusted via the control app,and IMHO is more good that trinity\franco's app for features, dispositions, colors, style etc.
i tried and used all the kernels and buyed all the dev's control app.my choice is glados, after 2\3 months of usage i don't want to came back.the best for my usage\tastes\preferences.
only 2 things that i miss:
a minimal slot of 190\220 mhz
preset pre-configured like franco's app (powersave,music,high power,etc etc..)
The kernel packaged with CM9 is faux, unless the CM team uses faux as a base and changes something in it..
Franco for me, despite some issues he is devoted to making his kernel perfect and his app is really good too for updating. Makes life a lot easier. With Franco's kernel I can say I have hardly ever had an app FC. I've tried other kernels but I just find with Franco's there is just more consistency and when I look at his thread I know what is going on almost instantly. This is my experience. I also like Fugu kernel and Trinity and GLAdos so on occasion I will try them out.
No Lean Kernel? Probably one of the most popular Kernel's out there
IAP Samurai kernel just rolled on the scene and couple of weeks ago. It's in the Sprint Gnex development section. I recommend giving it a try, Earthbound did some real good kernels in the OG Epic. Community and now he's brought his talents to the Gnex. It is based on Faux, but with IAP twists.

Currently switch between cm9 plus and leankernel. Both have a great balance of performance and battery life
I use the CMplus Kernel from here, he works with no problems under CM9 by me.

I completely agree. Franco/Lean kernel is the way to go. If I had more time throughout the day I'd like to try out the others again, but I don't feel like there's a need. Franco's kernel and app are great!
Alright, pointless gathering of information time! How many of you strictly flash a different kernel after a ROM flash? For example, I'm using liq*id 1.5 which comes with Franco kernel bundled with it. Now, I'm sure a large percentage here may agree, the guys have built a nice stable ROM and know what they are doing, likewise Franco is a dependable dev with a solid kernel.
On paper it sounds like a match made in heaven as they both have plenty of experience and i'm sure the liq*id devs chose it for a reason. However, I always go back to Trinity after about 20 mins. Am I a sucker for placebo effects? Does anyone else religiously go back to a preferred kernel despite the knowledge that most bundled kernels SHOULD/POSSIBLY give the best user experience?
TL;DR do you use a kernel most the time because you BELIEVE it will give you the best experience, or do you give bundled kernels a good run first?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
i dont know.. in my experience custom kernels have usually been better than bundled kernels, with cm being an exemption since the cm kernel is very important to cyanogen. on most the other roms, most of the developers really focus most their attention to the rom. anyways, i will usually run/try all the kernels(need to know what is out there and how it compares to trinity), but always go back to trinity since that where my heart lays, and home is where the heart is
Through some sort of sorcery and probably placebo, I've always noticed best results when I use a kernel that has its own ramdisk.
I'm not much for bundled kernels. I know what kernels work for me and how they work by trying them all out.
Currently, GLaDOS kernel is the one that acts best for me.
Franco Kernel... it's what I'm used to and I haven't had any problems with it so why change? plus.. I bought his app, so I'm dedicated to it.
And no I don't use bundled kernels. Just because the kernel comes with the ROM doesn't mean its optimal for that particular ROM. But it may come with ROM settings that are for that kernel (such as AOKP and "GNParts")

If you want to use AOKP 4.2.1 which is MR1 build 1 I suggest just upgrading the kernel they chose to go with...It wtill has some battery issues but if helped at least 30%
I use CM 10.1 with the CM 10.1 kernel. Best combo for me and my usage pattern
I don't use bundled kernels either!Last 3 months using AK Purity Kernel and it's really solid and does the job perfect!
I've been running CM 10.1 with the Air Kernel. Its been working great for me so far.
