[Q] best way to overlock the cpu? - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

so i've got a non-rooted Arc running .62 firmware.
im mostly ok with it as it is, except the CPU, i watch a lot of movies from my Arc on my HDTV but a lot of times it just can't handle some movies and starts to slideshow.
1) would a bump in CPU frequency from 1Ghz to 1.4Ghz(or more) make a difference in running some of the more graphic intensive movies?
2) if yes, then what do i need? from what i've read so far i should:
a) root my phone
b) get SetCPU
c) get that doomlord app
anything missing?
3) do i risk bricking my phone if i overclock and run at 1.4Ghz for 2-3 hours/day?

yes..u need to root your phone first...
u will observe noticeable difference if u overclock ur phone to 1.4Ghz..
your phone will run smoothly and it wont brick if u run at 1.4Ghz all the time
try setxperia also..it has more options.
Happy overclocking

1. You have to unlock your device. I recomend the testpoint method
(because unlock and relock process is easy and safe)
2. Install root (theres a lot of guides pinned on general)
3. Flash or fastboot a kernel that supports overclock and fits your rom
4. Download setxperia or cpufrills ( actually any app from marked that can overclock )
Ps. You can find all guides on general. Cant link threads because im on xda-app ( its possible, but im lazy)

when you say unlock you mean unlocking the phone from the carrier? or unlocking the bootloader?

You need to unlock the bootloader to boot a custom kernel with fastboot.

1)so in order to overclock i absolutely HAVE to unlock the bootloader?
i checked the testpoint method, seems rather scary to use, i think i will use some other method
2) if i dont need to unlock the bootloader, how do i downgrade to .42 or .58 so i can root? i can find a good amount of info on how to root pre 0.62 versions, but not much regarding how to downgrade from it

there are pre-rooted .62 image files..just flash them using flashtool..or else flash .42 ftf first..then root it...then do an OTA update to .62 ...

1. With the testpoint method you dont loose DRM datas (some apps like trackID uses these data)
The imei way you will lose the DRM data and forever.
2. You MUST have a unlocked bootloader to flash/fastboot kernel. Its the kernel that allows overclockig, the root just gives the permissions to do that.

@op, only 'disadvantages' are the drm issues, which you mention, and the inability to update via seus or ota, plus possibly voiding your warranty.
At kormatoes, def sounds like a corrupted file or sumfing ;-) I'm not too tech orientated so try again.
I unlocked my bootloader, have doomlords o/c kernel and loving it. Waiting for cm7 but don't want to lose my camera.

With custom ROMS, the camera in the 2011 Xperia Range doesn't work, might be because the EXMOR R techhnology is not supported by the custom ROMS, at least, that is what I've read over the internet.

[Q] A few questions about MK16, Roms, etc.

Sorry, I know this is the arc forum, but as there is no mk16 forum, I saw that usually people post pro development's in arc's forums.
I bought an used mk16 with the 4.0.1.a.0.283 firm, and the bootloader unlockable as explained in this link the SE website.
I installed Android SDK, JDK, PC companion, etc. I was unable to install the fastboot drivers until I found someones in SE website and now it seems to be OK (blue light if I connect the phone (turned off) to the computer while holding menu key)
After that, I configured my phone to enable USB debugging. Then I installed flashtool, and I tried to root the phone with it. It worked! (I didn't expect it to work, because I saw a few post with scripts, etc. to root the phone...)
So...
- Now I am with that firmware, rooted. Wich rootable firmware do you recommend me to flash to my phone? I always loved cyanogenmod, but I don't know if there is problems with the freexperia releases (like bad quality in camera picture, low volume, etc.)
- What is the baseband? I have one ending in 49.
- What are the requirements to install clockworkmod recovery? I love this recovery to do my nand backups, etc. Do i need to unlock bootloader to this? Is there any chance to lock again the bootloader? You know, for warranty things.
- Do you have ny list of what apks are secure to erase from /system/app? For example, I don need the moxier pro, let's golf, etc.
I suppose that those questions have been answered before, but without the mk16 forum, searching that info is quite impossible...
Thanks in advance.

Xperia Pro has a very few roms for now.The famous CM7 & CM9 are available for Xperia Pro.I guess,MIUI is also available(not sure). But,You must unlock your bootloader in order to install these roms.Rooted phone is not enough to install these roms.Atleast not yet. And rest assured, there is not drawback regarding camera and volume.Different users have different taste, many like it and many dont. But the fact is they are closely equal.
Basebands are well explained by a XDA member in the following post, please do take a look at it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1462360
For CWM, you only need a rooted phone. And the easiest way to install CWM on locked-bootloader Xperia 2011 device is by using this beautiful app from the following link.Go check it out

For relocking bootloader,i haven't come across any thread which claims to relock Xperia Pro's bootloader. But yes, relocking Xperia Arc's bootloader is poosible. You can give it a try but I'm not sure if it would work on Xperia Pro or not. Here is the link:

Here again,we have a the list of system apks with their descriptions for Xperia Arc's firmware.I assume that the Xperia Pro Has Almost the same System Apks with it so the list for Xperia Arc would also imply for Xperia Pro as well. Here is the link:

PS: Welcome To XDA
Thank you very much for all that information and the wellcome.
I can execute commands like "fastboot.exe -i 0x0fce getvar version" or "fastboot.exe devices" while in fastboot mode, so I assume that's OK.
But in the SE website they are very insistent about voiding warranty depending of blablabla. My phone is an unlocked (SIM free) from fabric one. I understand it will void the warranty if the phone would be form Vodafone (for example), but not mine... Do you know anything about this?
Do you recommend me any official rom? maybe the .42 one?
Now I have clear everything about the baseband, thanks.
That CWM apps you linked say to me (downloades form market) that MK16i is not supported by the app
I will take a look at that APK list, but first I want to be able do a NAND backup before starting to remove apks
Thanks again.

See, Unlocked phone means the phone is SIM free,i.e you can use any carrier SIM in your phone. But, Unlocked-Bootloader is a different thing. When you unlock bootloader, then you are free to flash any ROM which is compatible with your phone.Unlocking Bootloader voids warranty and that is what the SE website is trying to say.
I would recommend you to update your phone to the official .42 fimware version because it has many new features when compared to .283 ROM.Use SE update service or PC Companion for updating your phone.
And about cwm..try this...

Thx again
I know the diff between sim locked and bootloader looked. It's just that I don't understand why they let you unlock the bootloader, but don't keep the warranty...
I have unlocked the bootloader right now. Didn't know that it wipes all your configuration, apps, etc! At least, it's still rooted.
I have installed that CWM, and booted to it, but now I don't know what combination do I have to press to boot again into CWM XD Maybe is an image to boot just one time?
And about the ROM you recommend, PC Companion offers me the .62, not the .42. SE Update Service tells me that I have modified software (because of the rooting, I suppose) so it can't update my phone. Any idea?
Thanks again

Now that you have unlocked-bootloader, then you must not use SE update service, niether PC Companion Update nor SE OTA updates !! If you do,then it will brick your phone.
The other option you have is to flash a firmware. For more details follow this link http://www.wotanserver.com/en/sony-ericsson/se/xperia-pro-mk16/unlock-tool/debranding-flash

Thanks about the wotan link. Really easy to flash. Now I'm in .42. Do you know where can I find the firmware changelogs?

If you just need to flash an official firmware, then there is no need to unlock the bootloader. I was advised not to unlock it when not necessary (for example to flash the phone with some custom ROM like CM). Because with locked bootloader you should not be able to brick the phone and you could be always able to save the situation using Sony PC Companion.
So if you need to flash an official firmware, you can do it without any unlocking via Wotanserver. The firmware flashing is free, just register there. The flashing is very easy - there is a graphic wizard which tells you what to do.
EDIT: Ooops, flashing FW using Wotanserver is no longer free - costs 2 EUR now. Few weeks ago I flashed my phone there for free...

[Q] Help with Flashing my Xperia play R800i

Ok hey all So i been reading here on xda for some time.
And i have been reading about the development for the our play and the nice progress the devs been doing with ICS.
My phone is a R800i
Baseband: 8x55A-AAABQMAZM-203028D-56
Kernel: 2.6.32.9-perf [email protected]#1
Version: 4.0.2.A.0.42
Locked Bootloader
Not rooted
No sim lock works with all providers never been locked.
I havn't flashed so much phones in my day, some wm mobiles, and iphones and a lg gt540
So i need some help with what to do
I know the first thing is to unlock bootloader
but after that? If some one could point me to the files i need, just the specefic files just for my phone. And a step by step what to do like flash a rom first then kernel or kernel first then rom and if there is any other files i should use before i flash rom/kernel
And if some nice people could give me some hints on the best ICS rom.
I want this either this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1524159
or http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1404712
those two seems to the most stable atm. Or if anyone other have suggestions like CM9 or something like that
Cheers!

You said it's sim unlocked, right? If you bought one that isn't carrier locked, you can unlock your bootloader using the guide on the Sony mobile site. After unlocking the bootloader, flash a cwm kernel, and all the possibilities have then been opened.
Seriously though, the guides are easy to find. Google is your friend. Just tell it to search xda specifically.

Hey yea i been reading alot and i think i know now how it all works think i'll wait for some time. People seem to have alot problems with battery drain =/ Seems it can be fixed through Setcpu. And how about the overlock? i did read that some kernel have the phone overclocked to 2.0 ghz. Does it shorten the life of the phone? Not the battery life but the phone's life?

Is yours carrier locked? If so, you need to unlock the bootloader with something like omnius or setool.
@virtualxp - Overclocking anything too high will always shorten it's life. Going to 1.4-1.5 ghz shouldn't make a difference, but 2ghz is very high.
For battery drain issues, there are solutions. A lot of people noticed the battery getting worse after the 2.3.4 update, so either they're sticking with older firmware, or mixing builds and kernels.
My phone for example has the 2.3.4 (.42) firmware with a stock kernel from 2.3.3, and a baseband belonging to a separate build altogether. And I managed to combine those without an unlocked bootloader.. Mind you, it was a pain in the ass doing it without getting stuck with boot loop. But this way, I have less battery issues, and I can still use the themes and mods made for the .42 build.

In flashtool, there's an option to exclude the kernel and another for baseband. I flashed one firmware, then flashed another while excluding kernel, and then again while excluding the kernel and baseband, using three different ftf files.
For applying themes and mods without unlocking the bootloader, I used the T.E.A.M. locked bootloader recovery installer, and flashed them with the update.zip files through that recovery. You can get it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1437840

Yep, fastboot is used to boot custom kernels and requires unlocking your bootloader. Which can be a time consuming pain in the arse. There's plenty of stuff you can do with just root though.

[Q] Noob in need of some serious help. Rooting problems.

Hi there.
Basically I'm trying to root my Xperia play gingerbread 2.3.4 with build number 4.0.2.A.0.42 and I used Super one click which stated I rooted my phone.
However when I go to use Flashtool and after I fastboot it and select the Advanced stock kernel it says FAILED and that my device must be rooted.
My phone is unlocked so I dont know whats happening plus I'm fairly new to this whole rooting stuff.
I've spent a lot of time searching and found nothing.
Thanks and apologies for the essay.

2.3.4 cannot be rooted if I remember correctly. You need to downgrade to 2.3.3 or flash a pre-rooted kernel like DoomKernel.
I assume by "unlocked" you mean the bootloader is unlocked? Just you could also mean Network Unlocked.
If your bootloader is unlocked then I suggest using DoomKernel v14.
Just rename the ****.img (* referring to whatever the kernel is named after the download) to "boot.img" and throw it in C://Program Files/Android/Android-sdk/PlatformTools
Hold Shift and left-click and select Open Command Window here whilst still in the PlatformTools folder. Power the phone off and hold Search whilst connecting it to the USB. You'll get a blue light on your power button.
Type: fastboot flash boot boot.img
let it work its magic
Followed by: fastboot boot boot.img
you'll hear the USB disconnected sound from your computer. Disconnect the phone and wait for the kernel logo. Once the logo is there, spam the back button like your life depends on it. That should get you into Clockwork Mod recovery and basically verify you are rooted
Use doomlord easy root toolkit.
