Flickering home screen with ICS - Acer Iconia Tab A100

Since I have been running ICS, I have noticed more instability than HC 3.21. After upgrading to ICS I wiped the tablet and things got better for a while, but it is not as stable as HC. ICS also is also noticeably slower than HC for most tasks.
One problem is that after running a while, if I go to the home screen, the screen flickers, but I cannot select any apps. Every time I tap home icon, the screen flickers. The only cure is turning off and on the tablet. I assume this is a software problem, not a hardware problem. Has anyone experiences this or found a solution? Hopefully there will be an update to ICS to fix this and other stability issues.
I hate to wipe the tablet again, since I did it has only been a few days since I did it and I have been trying to get everything set up the way I want.

Are you on the official OTA ICS update? I'm not experiencing such symptoms on mine. I'm running Flexreaper ROM and it's faster, smoother than HC. The touchscreen is way better.

I am using the official ICS update.
I agree that the touch screen is less touchy.
Today Springpad did a forced close, and then all of the icons disappeared on the home screen. The wallpaper was still there, just no icons. But if I tapped on an invisible icon, the app would start.
I just did a factory reset a few days ago and it seemed to not make a difference.

Touch Screen Unresponsive Gap ( a few seconds )

I flashed about 2 days ago from stock to RHD 4 Beta 1, hoping that the problem will solve.
Problem is, that very often I would say, when touching the screen and even the 4 buttons it doesn't take the command.
Sometimes if I am quick enough, I press 2 times and still not receiving feedback, so I would say it lasts from 2-3 seconds and if I continuously use the screen, about 4 times per minute.
That is very annoying. It happened also in ROM stock and also now.
Anybody had that? Any ideas ?
That doesn't sound like a common issue, and it's possible you might have a hardware defect with your phone.
I'd flash it back to stock, or as close as you can find, and take it back to wherever it was purchased for a replacement or repair.

mine does the same with stock, but its not that common it happens like once a week for like 2-3 secs, and you dont need to have apps running, i just took it as it is
I m having no such issues in my DHD and i have used ARHD since very early versions.
Are you using any programs like setcpu or cpuspeed? Which kernel are you using?
If you have your htcsense account on, it would be a better idea to turn it off as well. And finally you can recalibrate your G-sensor (settings ---display)
I did some test with more ROMs. I can confirm that it happens frequently with Stock, Revolution HD 4.0 and LeeDroid 2.3.4.
I also flashed the CM7 Rom and I didn't had that problem, but it was only for test purpose as I still wan't to use HTC Sense.
So it's clearly soft related issue. Something must do this delay. As i am handling very fast everything I use, for me it is not acceptable.
I don't use cpuspeed or setcpu
Kernel is: 2.6.35.10-g4a4b278 ( Wed 16 Feb 2011 )
I don't use HTC Account. Reclibration doesn't help.
I don't think it's a performance problem, because all runs smoothly and it happens regularely exactly after restart ( when processes are starting loading etc ) and when no application runs in background and CPU / RAM is not being heavily used.
I see you use ADHD 2.0.15 and you also tested ADHD 4 beta 2, what I am actually using.
How would you compare those? I assume you don't have the problem.
Ah! ok...it is really a strange problem though, i would say. I never had this issue being touch unresponsive.
Yes of all the ARHD builds 2.0.15 is the best one, IMO. Well, the GB build is still in beta and it lags. The battery life is claimed to be slightly better though. But i could not live without search function (which FC all the time), the tweaks we have for Froyo builds and the overall user experience with froyo is just awesome...and Mike has done great job. At the moment the version i m using is priceless...
Hi,
I have this problem where the screen doesn't respond to my touch for a few seconds.
It's not all the time, but when it happens, it is like it for a while.
My phone is on Orange UK and has not been rooted. It is just as from the factory with apps added.
I will be interested to find out if this is a serious problem or just a minor glitch as it seems to be for me.

You have a similar problem as mine, but not so often.
What do you mean by a serious problem? It depends if it is disturbing you or if you can live with it. It won't get worse as I've seen it is not a hardware problem.
You can do the test by installing CM7 ROM and check if it does again. For me that solved the problem, but as I like to use HTC Sense, it is not an option to stay on the CM7 ROM.

Just a really wild guess, which launcher are you using? As I'm using launcher pro plus and it has a tendency to freeze after restart and the screen has no response for a while, usually it force closes automatically and restarts instantly after and works perfect. I'm on CM7 latest nightly and haven't tried other roms for a while so it might not be comparable. So if you are using launcher pro then try to manually restart it if it doesn't force close itself and start again. And if you're not, well just ignore this

[Q] Have home screen lag, what can I do?

Running stock ICS haven't touched anything.
Every time I am in an app and click the home button it loads a blank home screen then takes a while to load everything on my home screen. It didn't use to do this, only started in the past few days. Any ideas?

I was having that issue after I installed a live wallpaper (Microbes). Got rid of that and it went back to normal.

Are you using a custom launcher?Did you touch anything in developer options?
Did you install an app before it started acting up? It may not be fully compatible with 4.0 and causing issues. Also, have you tried to do a simple restart?
Found the issue. It was easy battery saver. Got rid of it and its fine now.

it case it happens again, what your experiencing is home screen redraw. it happens when the android system kills the launcher to save up memory.
this means that when you press home to go back to the launcher, it has to refresh, and redraw everything. and the more you have on your homescreens, and the more apps/widgets you have installed the longer it takes.
i've noticed it happening a lot on my phone when i'm switching between apps and then press home. It's normal for third party launchers but very strange for the stock one to have this so often.
I've had the exact same problem of late (also with the stock app-draw), I imagine it's a case of pinpointing the suspect app that's causing this. It's pretty serious though, a good 2 or 3 seconds and even then it's super choppy until the home screens are redrawn... The joys of early adoption :\
I was just searching to see if anyone else was experiencing this. I get the same over here.
I had similar issue. Something ate all my RAM, but it wasn't listed in 'running apps' in settings . Reboot fixed it
well folks, the sooner you go onto custom ROM the better. I tried ignoring these (and several other issues you are about to encounter) but the list was getting endless
I've bigxie and franco kernel now (4.0.3), not difficult to install, and now most of the STOCK issues are gone...

4.1.1 Touchscreen Scrolling not the same as 4.0.4

Just updated my 4.0.4 Yakju to 4.1.1 via the OTA, and I've already noticed something that I can attribute to what they said during Google I/O -- "the screen will now try to guess where you're going to touch next." Now, I'm not sure if that specifically is what's causing it (or if I just horribly misquoted from my very fail memory), but here's the problem:
I used to be able to scroll repeatedly and quickly with my thumb through a list up or down in quick succession (that is, flicking the screen up or down about two times every 1 or 1.5 seconds). Now when I do this, it will stop or slow down the scrolling to a CRAWL. I have to flick, and wait til it slows down or nearly stops, before flicking again. It doesn't always happen, but it happens probably 8/10 times. Inexplicably, it happens more often when trying to quickly scroll up, than down. Actually, it almost never happens when trying to scroll down, and it's not that I'm not making contact with the screen when going up, or touching it differently. I feel like it's just predicting where my thumb is going to be and stops the scrolling when I touch it again. It's very annoying! Aside from this, Jelly Bean is awesome!
So, is anyone else experiencing this? Am I crazy? Do I just need to get used to flicking, waiting, and flicking? Do dogs dream in color?
Also, not sure if this is posted in the right place or not; my apologies if it happens to be the latter.
Yes I do experience this but I got used to it since 4.1

I've been experiencing the same thing. I find that if you lock and then unlock your phone, the scrolling becomes smooth again.
I noticed something was wrong with scrolling. Hopefully this can be fixed.

I haven't noticed this at all. Scrolling is awesome in fact. I'll be glad to take a video of 4.1.1 of me scrolling through over 1000 songs, hundreds of contacts and easily flicking through, buttery smooth...

Possibly a bug?

Weird that two of you haven't experienced this, but a few of us have. Wondering what variation you're running? Takju/Yakju/_______? GSM or CDMA (has it been released for CDMA phones yet)?
Maybe it's something specific to a certain build, or maybe it just exacerbates faulty hardware that wasn't noticeable before? Hmm..
I dont experience this at all. Maybe you are slightly touching the screen while pulling your thumb up to re-swipe down, thus slowing down the scroll? That has happened to me a few times, but that is normal behavior. When i try to scroll as fast as I can, like 3 fast swipes a second, there are no slowdowns at all.
Takju GSM here BTW running 4.1.1 deodexed.

Running Stock GSM Yakju non-deodexed 4.1.1
And nah, I made sure I double-checked myself for stupidity before posting, and it wasn't me! Aside from that, even if I was doing something wrong, it's not like I suddenly changed a habitual behavior between 4.0.4 and 4.1.1, there's something definitely going on differently. Especially since I was flick scrolling through twitter out of boredom prior to updating
I have this happening when using ondemand governor on 4.1.1. Interactive governor is smooth.
Probably it is related to specific apps?
I tried to scroll many times as fast as I can on the stock browser while browsing Engadget, and everything smooth. No wait no touch predictions.
But, for example, our beloved XDA app is now terrible. Stuttering, jerkey, janky and the keyboard input using SwiftKey is laggy.
I compared the keyboard input versus Facebook or Google+, I can feel clearly the XDA app is laggy.

It happens the most prominently for me when going to Settings > Apps > All and scrolling to the bottom, then attempting to flick quickly back to the top. For some reason, the behavior is *mostly* absent using Twitter, though it still exists. Weird that it happens more in some places than others, and that one of them is part of the Android UI (rather than an app).
That is the same bug we're talking here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1576739
I've it since 4.0.4 (where multitouch bug disappeared and appeared this sensibvity touch bug)
I notice it a lot when scrolling pages in web browser.
Just lock and unlock GNexus to fix it.
But after some time, it appears again...

Fwiw i just tried this and had absolutely no issues. I tried multiple times scrolling to the bottom and up again and even being lazy with the height of my thumb it was fine. To stop it I'd have to press my thumb down mid scroll to scroll to stop it. I'm using OTE 4.1.1

[Q] slower phone after 4.2 update

Is anyone else finding their Galaxy Nexus feeling sluggish after the OTA update to 4.2? I'm sometimes even catching the screen being slow to turn on when I press the power button. Is this anyone else's impression as well?
Thanks,
Alan
Mine was slow the first minutes/hours due to setting up... After that, it's fast as riding through hell... Sometimes the CRT animation is a bit slow, but it's not that annoying..
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Yeah mines doing the same thing also... there's a few on here who's phones are a tad bit buggy after the OTA also. Not really a HUGE deal but I noticed mine is a little slower
I'm not experiencing much lag as far as applications go or scrolling but, as mentioned above, I have about a second delay on the CRT animation/locking of the screen. Not too bad but it does drive my OCD side crazy.
Everything is more or less absolutely fine. The only thing that slightly nags me is the slight delay when I lock the screen. Other than that everything is superb
When you guys talk about the "slight delay when locking the screen," do you mean the time between pressing the power button and the screen actually going off? That's annoying me too. But more irritating is that sometimes when the screen is _off_ and I push the power button, there's a 3-4 second delay before the screen comes on again. This only happens occasionally, but it _never_ happened before the OTA update, and it's really annoying. Is anyone else seeing this? And does anyone have any sense of whether a factory data reset (or anything else) would fix these issues?
Thanks!
Alan
I'm having the same issues. Thinking now about downgrading back to 4.1.2, or rooting which I've been avoiding because I have time to be a flashaholic these days...
The factory image was horribly sluggish for me on a clean wipe (bootlooped on dirty flash).
Since there's an acute shortage of custom ROMs that have moved on to 4.2 currently, options are limited to the vanilla AOSP kind.
I had to flash AOSP R5 with AK-443 kernel to be able to barely get through things. Even overclocking hasn't helped much.
Everytime I feel like going back to 4.1.2, the dreaded /sdcard/0 folder nuisance is stopping me from taking the effort.

Yeah, I'm so _not_ wanting to go back to the bad old days of having to flash ROMs to try to get things running smoothly. I'd love there to be a better solution here.

That's sad to hear. I just got 4.2.1 and few minutes ago, and was hoping it would help. Will see and report back.
Ugh -- I just wiped my phone in the hopes that this would be fixed, but no luck: it still sometimes takes several seconds for the screen to light up after pressing the power button. This is ridiculous and so frustrating. The Galaxy Nexus was so snappy with 4.1! What happened to Project Butter??????

OK, I just got the 4.2.2 update, and it seems to be speeding things up. I'm no longer noticing delays when pressing the power button. Anyone else noticing performance improvements with 4.2.2?
For me 4.2.2 is faster and smoother, also battery drain is better.

[Q] Touch Screen multiple touches for one touch?

Anyone else getting many touches for one touch? For instance if I type "STUPID", I may end up with "STUUUPIIDDD". It's not quite that excessive, but wanted to get the point across. One touch results in multiple letters/clicks every now and then.
Think this is a hardware issue, or something they may be able to tweak with an update?

Oh, it's hella-bothersome. Could be worse if it did it more, but it's still far too much for a "flagship" device.
i bet it's a 4.3 issue or something they overlooked..i remember when there were touch issues back on 4.1 i think ti was...remember on the Gnex, when after you'd touch recent apps, touch sensitivty would drop like crazy and you'd have to shut the screen off and turn it back on?

I'm all updated, still seeing it. Not a lot, but enough to be irritating.
I'm having this problem as well. Just got my nexus about 2 hours ago and trying to set it up I'm seeing that long presses are sometimes hard to perform and sometimes scrolling lists will perform a button click on items when I was in the middle of a swipe gesture. I'm also seeing the keyboard issue. I thought it might be a stock keyboard problem but switched it out to thumb keyboard and I'm having the same issue.
My device forced an update right after I turned it on. It connected to wifi and then rebooted, ran the update, then restarted and had to go through the wizard again. Got into the OS and it said there was another system update. Checked version and it was 4.3 but did the update again. Still 4.3 after update. Was strange.
This keyboard issue is annoying enough that I'm thinking about RMA already. The device is pretty amazing other than that
Haven't seen that yet, but I'm using the latest phone version of SwiftKey.
