I'm trying to use some of those apps like foursquare or the ones that show you people running the same app near by like Grindr. With the stock OS it doesnt' work at all. I've tried a few custom roms but they don't seem to either. Even in CM9 if I enable location services the apps still complain that there are none. Are there any roms that are better at it than others? Things like google maps usually but not sure if some of these apps are looking for GPS only and that's why they're complaining or what their issue is. Thanks!
Kindle Fire lacks onboard GPS module, and some apps require high precision location providers to work.
I think that wifi location service isn't considered high precision location provider from Android' APIs.
The only way to enable those apps is connecting a GPS device to the KF and have a kernel that supports it.
You might also want to try "tethergps" look for it in google.
Anyway, this post should be moved to "Kindle Fire Q&A" I think...
Bye!
On cm7 you could use just the wifi signal for Google Maps but it doesn't work on cm9, hopefully someone can figure it out so that it will work.
Modaco rom supports network location and it works much better than I expected. Of course you can't use navigation with it, but other than that, all location based applications work fine.
I used Unofficial CM9 and the browser and Google Maps could use wifi to detect my location. Not sure about FourSquare or 3rd party apps though.
I'm on stock and mapquest finds my location perfectly (and with good accuracy)

Wifi location services seems a little funky...
On my Galaxy Note:
If I turn off GPS in Settings, network location services all continue working normally.
On the Fire running CM9:
If I turn off GPS in Settings, it acts as if wifi location services have also been disabled. If GPS is set to on, wifi location works in Google Maps, but not in Foursquare (it just hangs forever waiting for location).
Probably something in the frameworks needs a little rework to handle a wifi-only device with no GPS...
It works in gede

Nothing to do with the kernel, it's in /system
The newest build of gedeROM supports using wifi to pinpoint your location
I'm running MoDaCo Gr8 ROM and Google Earth and Maps pinpoint my location by wifi.
gedeROM has it.

Hello,
Since I have rooted my myTouch 3G Slide I started to notice GPS problems.
But it's funny how some things related to GPS work, and some don't.
Examples:
- Weather: can determine my location perfectly and show weather from that region.
- Maps: can't determine my location, or shows it in completely random place, or maybe like 2-3 miles off. But now I just checked it works perfectly when plugged into usb (charge mode). But now if I unplug and use maps it will work perfectly. But sometimes it's just gay...
- Facebook Location: sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. Pretty much same as maps
I have tried many roms and this happens on every rom there is.
Currently I am using stock rooted rom with su.
Possible thoughts: GPS doesnt work on full power when not plugged into usb and thats why it cant find location...
P.S. Off-topic question. Anyone knows good offline navigation with gps tracking?
Are you using a Froyo ROM? And if so, did you upgrade to the latest radio? In my experience, anytime I switched to a ROM that changes a major version of the software, the radio had to be upgraded. The latest is 7.09 still I believe... The "randomness" of location working is probably because you're not waiting for a GPS lock. When maps shows you not exactly in the same place, it is not "random", it has located you based on the cell towers in your area, as a "calculated" approximate location. Think of "triangulation" that was popularly used in the movies when they would track a person via cell phone. Almost all the apps that can use your locations can use either location by GPS or location by network.

Hmm I never updated the radio cause I have had no idea what it is, but I will look into upgrading it. And hmm, maybe GPS doesnt work at all and those apps that work use network to figureout location.
But anyway I installed CoPilot and it worked great so far.
Lokking forward radio upgrade, and thanks for info
I've flashed chevyowners' FXP CM9 builds onto my R800x, starting with 112, currently on 113. I only seem to be able to get a location if I turn on GPS. If I have it turned off, I am unable to get a location at all, and google maps asks me to "please enable a My Location source in system settings.
But in Settings -> Location Services, I have Google's location service checked, which should give me coarse location from wifi/3g, right?
I used the 3/17/12 gapps.
Does anyone else have this problem? Anyone know a fix? Do any of the other CM9 compatible kernels (Such as Darkforest) fix the issue?
Yeah, it's a bug Chevy needs to fix.

It's not a kernel issue, it's a cm9 issue that's already known and they are working on fixing

Chevy isn't a part of fxp. All he does it make fxp usable for cdma users
Cool, wasn't sure if it was a Play specific or CM9 overall bug. I'll check out the CM9 issue tracker.
Hey,
I have a similar issue (the same?) with CM7.2 (FXP114) on my Xperia Mini Pro (mango):

Same bug in CM7.2 and CM9?

Yup, it's fixed. I can pull locations from all 3 sources now - GPS, Wifi, and Cell towers.
Sweet, thanks for the hint, I'll try FXP115 this weekend.
However, WiFi location only works with google maps, right? Or does it work without gapps as well? If so, how, and with what app?

Dunno. All I know is I'm getting locations in all the apps I use them in (gmaps, weather.com, touchtunes), with both wifi on and off while GPS is off.
Network location needs an apk from gapps, see here:

Solved my issue...
I'm in Portugal and i've got the HTC Droid Incredible from Verizon, there's no CDMA network in Portugal, but my main problem is that i'm not able to use the GPS on my phone... anyone has any idea? i've tried several app's that work on my other phone but nothing works..
Is GPS even enabled in settings -> location settings? There should be a standalone GPS option on the Droid Incredible. If that's on then you can use GPS and maps data (need wifi for maps data though since you're not on CDMA).
Yeah, you should be able to use GPS with google maps after downloading some data for offline mode.
Make sure all of your location services are enabled on the phone, and make sure you have GAPPS installed, and then get Maps and Nav.
the trick with a wifi-only Dinc is that you have to map or nav your route BEFORE YOU LEAVE because you won't have the maps automatically updating over the CDMA network.
nothing
The thing is that, i simply can't, either way, not even full offline gps (Sygic) neither gps apps like GPS Status...

If no apps can use the gps and different roms dont solve the issue, then more than likley its a hardware failure of the gps chip.
Anyone else having issues with 4.2 not using GPS for location services? When I open News & Weather app no local weather based on location, also happens when opening Local Offers app and Maps. I did a clean install of Android 4.2 from AOSP not a rom from a dev here and still having problems.
Same issue, really messed up my game of ingress.
I basically had to rely on Google's wifi mac based location thing.
Since I have not posted 10 replies to the site, I'm using the Q&A to post some issues with the new Slimbean 4.3 weekly build 4.
The WiFi won't activate whenever the S3 is in range of a signal or site saved into the phone. I have to turn off the WiFi feature for about 10 seconds in order for the signal to be noticed/activated.
There is feedback from the Google Play Music app. I did not run a logcat to determine the time or frequency of the occurrence.
Finally, there appears to be an issue with the latest version of Maps along with location access. I uninstalled Maps 7.1 and placed 6.14 from the Slimroms site. It works better but the location access is still glitchy with other apps that require it.
All in all, this is however great progress on 4.3!

I'm not running slimbean, but I am on pac 4.3 and my wifi works fine. Maybe try either leankernel or kt747, the wifi drivers are contained in the kernel so maybe you'll have some more luck with them.
I've had an issue with the GPS as well, and disabling "use assisted GPS" in the phone settings fixed it 100%.

Thanks I'll give it a try.
The kt747 kernel works great! I also found out that the new privacy feature blocks GPS data coming in or going out. Turn off the privacy feature in the apps that require locator service.
