Sprint GNEX 1115 PRL - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

My Epic Touch was dropped by my daughter and had the screen shattered. Without doing research (dumb) I replaced it with the GNEX. On my Epic Touch, I forced the 1115 PRL and used Roam Control at work where I get horrible reception, but I haven't found a way to do it with the GNEX. Is it possible?

I have also been trying to do this. I have found the dialer codes that let you get into the USB modem mode screen, however it seems that because of the OMAP chipset in the Gnexus, Qualcomm drivers do not work for it. We need compatible drivers or a Product Support Tool that will work with the Spirent modem.

Might have a solution http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1624356
I'll be testing in a area that has 3g for sure tomorrow and will let you know.

Please explain the 4G Radio issues

There's too many posts and threads about this and i'm super confused. Can someone explain real simple what is the issue with the 4G radios? Let me give you some background on my own issues and let me know if this coincides:
I bought my phone, went to Baltimore, 4G wouldn't connect at all.
I rooted and flashed Damage Rom and Toasty recovery (i believe). Apparently i have the old wimax radio.
Today I tested wimax and it did connect for a minute or 2, then it seems to have dropped (this was in Manassas)
Do i need a new radio or something?
Im not going to pretend to know completely, but the biggest issue i think was that this is the only phone that has 4G right now, and HTC was the only one with those drivers for android. So now our devs here have to get ahold of them and figure out exactly how to use them before 4g will work.
If you tried it out before you rooted your phone, then that would be sprints fault on coverage.

[Q] EVDO <failed>

A few weeks ago my evos data became ridiculously slow. I was the latest stable cm6 (6.1.2 iirc) and it was out of nowhere since I did not install any new apps or make any changes. I did a nandroid back to when I first rooted and I still had no 3g (wifi, bluetooth, wimax, 1x all work).
The tech I talked to at Sprint had me try updating everything and even a factory reset (which I already tried before calling). I have Best Buys phone insurance (never again. Sprints is much better after having to use both at one point or another) so I took it to best buy and when I get my phone home the data and phone are slow. After a few days I notice in ##debug# evdo engineering has <failed> on everything and I was running 3.26.xx.x I just ran the ruu to the latest 3.70 and it is snappy again but still no 3g.
Once I get time I am going to take it to the sprint repair center but I am curious if anyone else has had this problem. A search on here and Google doesn't come up with anything.

Have you tried updating your profile? Also, are your radio/baseband, PRI, NV & WiMax files updated to the latest versions? You can check it by going to Menu-Settings-About Phone-Software Information. The NV will not be listed, by the way.
Yes, everything is the latest. I even tried the port and proxy reset to 0 and 0.0.0.0 respectively method with no change.
It seems like my radio just doesn't work on 3g anymore. I hope to get to the sprint service center before the weekend.

I hear ya. Hopefully, they'll provide you with a new EVO instead of a refurbished one.
Call sprint's advanced tech support.
877-809-6696 ats advanced tech supp
Ask them to do a full profile reset or update. They ask you to power the phone off for a few min (they even asked me to pull the battery, but I didn't see a need for that). Then when it reboots, it will do the ota provisioning, which should correct things.

They did that as well. The tech said it was basically like a new line.
It is odd because every other thread I see online has had it fixed by one of the common methods or by calling sprint.
I have a tux fitting tomorrow for my brothers wedding and the sprint service center isn't too far from that so I should be able to get it checked out then.
It may be Sprint and their network. A lot of people have been stating that they are either getting really fast speeds or really slow speeds. If I understood everything correctly I think that Sprint is going through several updates for a while to be more competitive and provide better service. It may not be your phone. If you have any friends with the same phone then does a speed test to the same server side by side and see if that is different. If the results are the same it is the network, but if the other phone is faster then it is your phone that is having the problems.

My friends evo is perfect right next to mine in san jose to sacramento. I have no 3g anywhere I have been lately (Monterey all the way to South Lake Tahoe).
I was having the Same Issue with my wife phone but she was running CM7 RC2. I was able only fix it by installing sprint Lover.
Then as itohead said try to install Sprint Lovers and see if that works. If not then I think that there is something wrong with your phone and you may need a new one, or wait till the Evo 3D comes out and get one of those.
I forgot to update this. Sorry guys.
Took it to a sprint repair center and the tech said he's never seen that before and ordered me a new one on the grounds that my usb port was "broken".

[Q] Epic4g to MetroPCS. Metro claims they dont have 3G???

I just went through all the necessary steps to get my shiny new Epic 4G to work on MetroPCS. I realize that LTE 4G wont work because of differing technologies but was willing to settle for 3G.
I got to the metro store to have them add my ESN to their database and they told me they do not have any 3G network whatsoever. Is this true? What is a good course of action here? seems like my only two options are get an LTE phone or try Boost Mobile instead.
My more important question is are these guys yanking my chain to avoid work or sell me something?
Thoughts?
3G is only in a few cities and when I say a few I do mean a few that can be counted on one hand I believe. Dallas and Miami I think were of the few that were supposed to recently have reactivated the 3g temporally to relieve some traffic in other areas.
Flash to boost or cricket I was Able to get my Epic on cricket with there 45 dollar plan with working 3g cane it to a lil under 50 a month with taxes
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
thanks guys, I'll look into what's available in my area!
Also are those Metro guys just lazy as hell or can they really not add an ESN to the Metro inventory without flashing it themselves? They claimed that their flashing program did the adding and they had no other way to do it. Sounds like a hard sell or a lazy excuse to me
I would lean more towards they are not as experienced in that area. I think any opportunity to provide a service for a customer within your ability that would lead to the customer returning to receive more services from your store should be an automatic move to make. No brainer. I'm sure if they knew other methods they would.
Well the manager was who I was talking to about it at the time. I figure if anyone in the store knows he would :\
They do have 3g, I just manually updated my prl and its blazing fast. Not capped right now either. Although I havent left the house so not sure how the differnt towers are going to work. I just downloaded 2000kb in 2.83 secs, prl 3022 evdo rev a moto droid 1. Daytona

Why did you revive this old thread? Lol.

So many T989 modems!!

I've heard tons of miracle stories about flashing a new modem and boosting network data speed, so I just tried flashing the Kj3, the KID, and the VK1 onto mine. KID and VK1 both had call capability but no network data reception at all and also caused my phone to stop recognizing my SIM. The Kj3 works (I'm running it now) with network data but has cut my speeds from around 2.5 mB/s down to anywhere from 700-800 kB/s to 1.5 mB/s. Still not bad, but not great either. I'll do a battery life comparison over the next couple of days and let you know if it has an impact... but in the meantime, does anyone know why the two tmo modems didn't connect and killed my SIM card and why the Telus modem slowed me down so much even though it should support the same dual antenna protocols as my stock modem??
Oh, and all tests are in northeast Ohio if it helps anyone else in the area!

If you are getting 2.5 MB/s down that is very, very good. That means that not counting overhead you are getting a stable 20Mbps OTA. I Can barely get between 12-15 Mbps in Minneapolis.
Even though the network is supposed to be 42Mbps in some areas I have never seen anyone get more than 25Mbps OTA.
Either way it is a hell of a lot faster than then 3Mbps max I was getting on my Vibrant on the exact same towers which translates to less than 350KBps.

I agree with the previous reply you are getting great speeds [I am in the Philly Metro Area] and we are a testbed and at full tilt I concur I have not seen more than 20 - 25 MBps and not 45 MBps as the ceiling. Keep in mind there are not many radios out there, really the VK1 is the updated radio that was part of the 2.3.6 update Samsung pushed to our phones. I have heard of the skyrocket radio working on ours but not the others [reliably].
ALSO, 4G IS NOT THE SAME AROUND THE WORLD IT IS LIKE SAYING ALL ANDROID PHONES WILL RUN THE SAME THINGS. Here in the US we run on a totally different frequencies than most of the rest of the world AND on top of that even some areas with the same carriers run on different freqs like TMo washington State runs on 700MHz and 1900 MHz while in my area it is 700 MHz only [I believe dont nit pick the statements as I am trying to remember these on the fly].
Due to borard restrictions I can not post outside links but go to google and search GSM World Coverage Map and first link should be from a worldtimezone
domain. This will highlight what I am getting at and give you an idea of what is going on with GSM 4G.
All of that to say be VERY careful which radios you use even if it does work with the phone your areas cell towers may not use compatible freqs.
Last thing just to be sure you are aware not every Galaxy S2 is an SGH-T989 that is only for the Tmobile Galaxy S2
Galaxy model List:
Tmo: SGH-T989
The T-Mobile USA version was codenamed the Samsung "Hercules" and given the model number SGH-T989 (as opposed to other phones with the Galaxy S II name which are I9100 models)
Sprint: Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch (Model SPH-D710)
The Sprint version of the device, previously codenamed "Within", is known as the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch (Model SPH-D710). Unlike its predecessor, the Epic 4G, the Epic 4G Touch lacks a physical QWERTY keyboard. At 4.52 inches, it has a larger display than the international version. Additionally, the Epic 4G Touch features four touch-capacitive buttons, as opposed to the hardware/capacitive button combination found on the international version. Other differences include an LED notification light, larger battery (6.66Wh), and a WiMax radio. The device was launched on September 16, 2011. Unlike the T-Mobile USA and AT&T versions this particular model does not come with the NFC chip.
ATT: SGH-I777
The AT&T version was codenamed "Attain" (Model SGH-I777). However, it appeared on AT&T and Samsung websites simply as the Samsung Galaxy S II. It maintains a 4.3 inch screen, but also features four touch buttons. It also contains NFC. It was released on October 2, 2011.
SECOND ATT VARIANT [SAME PHONE]: Model SGH-I727
This is the second variant of this phone to come to AT&T (Model SGH-I727) along with some changes. For instance, the display features the same 4.52 inch screen shared with the Sprint model. Additionally, this variant also includes LTE radio, to coincide with AT&T's launch of its LTE network. However, to make this change it was required for the SoC chipset to be changed from the Exynos to the Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8260, as the Exynos SoC does not support LTE (akin to a similar limitation made on the T-Mobile model). 'Skyrocket' was released on November 6, 2011 alongside a similar LTE-capable [HTC Vivid] at the same date. The NFC feature is not enabled.
US Cellular: U.S. Cellular's variant (Model SCH-R760) is the same as Sprint's Epic 4G Touch, but without the integrated WiMax radio. All other specifications remain the same
JAPANESE GALAXY S2 MODELS
In Japan, the Galaxy S2 is known as the NTT DoCoMo SC-02C
SOUTH KOREAN VARIANTS:
All of south Korean variants have a T-DMB tuner in place of FM radio tuner
SK Telecom's Galaxy S II (SHW-M250S)
The SK Telecom variant uses SK-MMS system instead of OMA-MMS system for MMS.
KT's Galaxy S II (SHW-M250K)
This variant uses KT's Wi-Fi CM instead of Android's Wi-Fi CM
LG U+'s Galaxy S II (SHW-M250L)
Because of mobile networks LG U+ have, it uses EV-DO Rev.B (KPCS 1.8Ghz) instead of WCDMA and HSPA. It is slightly thicker (9.4mm) than SK Telecom and KT variants (8.89mm).
CANADIAN VARIANTS
Rogers' Galaxy S II LTE (SGH-i727R)
This phone features a larger screen 4.52", a bigger battery 1850mAh, and a different 1.5GHZ Qualcomm processor. Rogers will carry the Samsung Galaxy S II LTE, launching in Fall 2011, soon after its LTE Launch in Toronto.[89]
Bell's Galaxy S II (GT-I9100M)
Bell's Samsung Galaxy S II is identical to the international version except that its model number is I9100M.
Telus' 4G Galaxy S II X (SGH-T989D)
Telus' Galaxy S II is virtually identical to the T-Mobile variant. It has a Qualcomm 1.5 Ghz dual core processor, larger 4.52 inch screen and 1850 mAh battery, is thicker at 9.4mm and has a different design.[90] There is a chrome band around the edge and the plastic on the back has a leathery feel.[91] Instead of the hardware home button, it has the standard four capacitive buttons. The Qualcomm processor allows for 42Mbps HSPA+ download speeds that the Samsung Exynos processor is not currently capable of. It was released on October 28, 2011.
[hopefully saved those the time of looking up the details of at least the US models [some info found on international versions but most info found on US variants per Wikipedia and again due to not allowed to post external links yet hope this helps a little [still confusing as hell all things considered:
So as you can see EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE ALL KNOWN AS SAMSUNG GALAXY S2s there are variables to consider in a myriad of different ways. Now some are compatible with others [I BELIEVE US Tmo variants work with the Candian variant [note the same 1.5 DC CPU [this is one of the bigger pieces as CPU instructions dictate a lot of how the code is written for a ROM].
OH AND please dont think I am saying you cant play with the modem drivers just giving you some pointers on how to better determine which will work best for you AND STRESSING THAT YOU RUN A FULL NANDROID BACKUP and store it to a safe place that is not any form of phone storage [that way you know even if you accidentally format something you didnt just shoot yourself in the foot].
Hope that helps!
Roger that, and thanks for all the help, especially from Pariah! I've made sure to do everything by the books so I don't brick my baby, but its always nice to have my work double checked. I know I don't need any more speed (and probably don't even use all the bandwidth I have at my disposal now), but I'm trying to find ways to compete with Verizon's new LTE speeds. Is it even feasible on an HSPA+ phone?

We do already compete with their speeds again its like Tmo saying they offer 45mbps and no one ever gets that Verizon will say oh yeah we do 100Mbps now but neglect to say that depends on the phone [your phone could be 4G LTE and yet the chipset may be only able to use half of the total capability of the 4G LTE standard], towers your phone is connected to how many other users are using that tower and the system as a whole as well, how congested the radio freq band is in your area, etc. Think of it like home high speed ISPs. Comcast and Verizon FiOS both do the job but most users are happy with Comcast even when Verizon FiOS blows it away ;-)
I totally hear what you are saying and I was the same way when I first got my phone, but then I realized the CPU and GPU blow AWAY my old Cliq XT and the 4G [3G HSPA+ technically] speeds I get on my new SGH-T989 S2 blows away the 3G service I was getting with my Cliq XT and then I also realized my phone with the SD Card not being top notch may only be able to write to the SD Card only so fast which would again impact my speeds and found that to eek out the extra couple mbps would be COSTLY to do it right and I am more than happy with my phone as it is and if I need crazy fast downloads I use my bleeding edge desktop on FiOS and just use USB or wireless network to transfer the files from the comp to the phone which would not be contingent on carrier bandwidth anyways as it is my home's router.
If I were you install Samsung Kies use Update firmware have it re-apply newest firmware offered then re-root the phone and install ROM Manager to then handle the install of a custom ROM [easiest way to ensure best modem I have found and everything is in place the right way [I use Juggernaut v5.0 myself]
OH NOT MANY PEOPLE USE THE FOLLOWING KERNEL FROM FAUX BUT I CAN NOT RAVE BOUT IT ENOUGH AND IT HELPED ALL MY NETWORK AND OTHER SPEEDS IMMENSELY: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1372690
EVEN RETAINS FULL USB OTG AND He has done SUPERB work on the 2d 3d OC I no longer have any odd scrolling, ghosting or other stuff I got graphically on stock kernel. I tried Synergy, Bullet, Juggs and always come back to faux kernel!
AGAIN THIS IS JUST MY DEVIE I PERSONALLY OWN YOUR DEVICE MAY REACT DIFFERENTLY. ALWAYS RUN FULL NANDROID BACKUP
Hmmm ok, I'll give it a try! Noob question though... what is/is there a way to flash a new kernel "behind" my current ROM without losing all of my data, apps, and aesthetic configuration? Or do I just have to suck it up and reflash my ROM on top of the new kernel?

So in conclusion, after three days of testing, the stock KID modem outperforms all the others quite admirably on the T-Mobile HSPA+ network in northeast Ohio on the SGS2. Not a very comprehensive test, but I'm more than done playing with it lol. Thanks everyone for your help and tips! [Q] Can I disable 4g on a new phone and transfer it to my EVO?

I've been using an EVO for about a year and a half on Cricket in order to save a few bucks. I'm now back in a better job and ready to go back to a better service provider.
If I sign up for Sprint and get a new device with WiMax 4G (do they still offer those?) is it possible to program my EVO to use the 4G service and use it as a dedicated connection at home and disable it on my new phone (I don't need 4G while out and about honestly)?

The only way to do this would be to use the new device as a hotspot, thus sharing the 4g with the Evo. There is no way of just "transferring" wimax keys from one device to another. However, if you are going to get a new device on Sprint, why not just re-activate the Evo with new service?

Well this EVO has a bad ESN as far as I know, which is why I got it for use on Cricket. However, I tried looking up the ESN on some site that supposedly can check it and it said it was clear.
This phone is starting to age. It needs a new housing and the screen has gotten a few scratches. I wouldn't mind upgrading to a new phone at this point. It looks like Sprint still has WiMax devices so I'm good there. Maybe a Galaxy SII is in my future.
It looks like I can maybe get a new device and then once 4G is activated I can program the mac address of the 4G radio on the new phone into my EVO. I found some instructions that I think will do the trick:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1447615
It seems like people have successfully transferred/shared 4G service between devices before. I think all I need to do is get aG service on a new device and then once that MAC is in Sprint's system change my EVO's 4G mac to that of the new phone. It doesn't look like I need to swap RSA keys between devices. This explains why you can do something like make your EVO 4G work with Clearwire's 4G simply by getting your MAC into their system.
