If Sprint rolls out LTE in Q2 of 2012, does this mean my promises of 4G coverage takes a giant sized dump?
ET4G
Nobody knows.
I don't think so, they won't abandon WiMax entirely, not for awhile at least. Besides, with Network Vision there isn't much to worry about.

yeah, looks like unless there is some way the et4g can receive a wimax signal...we are gonna be left on the curve holding our phones and a big handful of nothing!
rather than returning the phone, how about a refund for all the months that i've been paying for 4g services and getting nothing! basically we have been funding a technology that we aren't even going to be able to take advantage of...genius Sprint, absolutely genius.
sounds like a class action lawsuit if you ask me. and sprint shouldn't think it wouldn't happen, they should take a lesson from what bank of america is going through with their over draft fees.
How about everybody chills out, takes a deep breath, steps back and realizes that by time Sprint shuts off the WiMax transmitters our ET4Gs will be obsolete pieces of crap and we'll definitely be eligible for upgrades...?

Hrmmm I highly doubt it. Once again everything is rumored till officially announce. Saying that the rumors are suggesting for now that Sprint is going to release new phones with both LTE and Wimax radio's. That means Wimax would not be turning off anytime soon. Plus all you really have to do is take good care of your phone, maybe, get a good sturdy case and just sell it later for a LTE variant phone if LTE does become more predominant anytime soon, which I doubt. That's my game plan for now since I am a phone nerd who wants only the best.
Edit:
Sorry daneurysm I read your post wrong. I actually agree with what you say.
ill cross the bridge when it comes. If they switch everything to LTE, they wont just abandon wimax number one, theyve put too much $$ into it, number two who cares. If a LTE phone comes out that I want, Ill just buy a phone that supports it and sell the s2. But for now, im totally happy with the s2, so I say again my friends, lets just cross the bridge when it comes

According to a bunch of cnet articles, yes, the october 7 announcement will include the end of the clear partnership. In other words, the 4g service you have now is the 4g service you will have for the life of your phone.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
Sprint is looking to eventually build out/migrate to a TD-LTE network, which is at least partially compatible with wimax supposedly
The technology is very similar, if Sprint were to just switch to LTE now, as far as I know all that they would have to do is a firmware update. I could be wrong though, I am certainly not an expert. It comes back to Network Vision though, Sprint could easily have both with minimal cost.

Im just wondering if they go LTE what will happen to me? I'm in an area that doesn't have Wimax and never will so what now?
they will probably make it work, i cant see them having a million people with wiimax smartphones look stupid when lte come
LTE & WiMax
I have read multiple places that the underlying layer 0 technology in Wimax and LTE are functionally the same. That most modern WiMax technology can be flashed to support both LTE and WiMax. Clear mentioned this several times in their releases regarding their building of an LTE network. Sprint has said something along the same lines when they announced their deal to build an LTE Network for someone else. It would absolutely result in a class action lawsuit if Sprint continued to sell new WiMax phones without the intention of extending WiMax in to those areas that currently do not have WiMax service, especially when advertising that they were rolling it out nationwide. There appear to already be class action lawsuits winding their way through the legal system for people who are suing over being charged the premium data fee for an Evo when their Anything Data Plan said they were entitled to unlimited data on Sprint's network. It is strongly believed that this is why Sprint changed it to all smart phones, even those on older plans so as to close that gate. I live about 10 miles from the closest WiMax service and it hasn't changed in 2 years. I honestly expect that they will ultimately expand it in to my area because I live along a major California Highway heading north. I sort of new this was coming when I bought the phone so it really means less to me the when I purchased the HTC View as the data plan on my phone allows me unlimited 3G but my View has only 4gb of 3G and that scares me enough to not use it fervently to watch Midget Porn. Midget Porn uses less GBs to stream, takes up less storage space and is formats perfectly for the Epic Touch Screen. Think about it for a second. Yeah it is funny.
Midget porn... yes...

The sprint Galaxy Nexus will be launched soon, and I was wondering who will be looking to buy this phone. Since the 1st launch specs have mysteriously been pulled it seems there is no official knowledge of whether there will be a 1.5 cpu, or the same specs as the Verizon version. Sprint's newer ad's only show a picture of the phone with vague basic information.
We know that LTE is not rolling out for a while, bu we still bought the EVO 4G. We also know that the LTE band probably will change in the future, but my Photon is still getting Wimax 4G when I am in NYC. I am looking for my 1st Google experience, with a great display, and NFC. I also hope that the antenna, and GPS issues are fixed!
Man can't believe there gonna real ease this phone on sprint I feel bad for anyone that gets it in the phoenix area

I think its pretty safe to assume it will be 1.2ghz.
Google isn't going to want to fragment their baby in that manner.
If I was still on Sprint I would get it. Well I did get it but jumped to Verizon for it. Now I have a great phone on a great network...
Don't know what GPS issues you are talking about either...GPS is totally fine on the device.
As far as radios, seems like there might have been some bad hardware. If your device isn't defective then the radio's are just fine...
I think Sprint's version will have other issues it might face as a first device on a brand new LTE network.
I don't think there will be any LTE issues for it on Sprint. After all, it will be available almost nowhere to be able to have it drop or be unstable. /potshot

Haha...good point
i'm confident that this will be the same exact version as the Verizon CDMA variant. no gpu updates/no 1.5 clock/no LTE. these are always pipe dreamed whenever a carrier releases it after another has had it. Sammy aint puttin in any more into a phone that wont be a top seller anyway. because only 10-15% of the droid population even know what the nexus is. Apple/HTC/MOTO will get those newbie sales.
pretty much buying this phone cuz i love my nexus S 4g, and just looking for a more capable hardware to run ICS
the 3g will suck like it does now/the LTE rollout will be shaky at best/and no wimax to bail out the crappy 3g speeds
My expectations are right where they need to be. I bought the evo 4g on launch day and after that i learned "it is what it is."
but my major buying point of this over the coveted SGSIII is the fact that i KNOW the GN will run the next iteration of android (Jelly Bean?) before any phone that released this generation will. Ive been around long enough to realize that only newer/vanilla phones get the upgrades. (2.2/2.3/4.0) say what you want about the nexus s, but it was first to run ICS officially/unofficially. meanwhile people with the best hardware spec'd phone SGSII/Epic Touch are running BETAs of it at best...
so the GN will still be relevant a year from now. just the nexus s is still relevant to any1 not on verizion or whoever copped the EU version.
Just sad how late its coming out. And even still, LTE will be a joke for the next year at least on Sprint.
I made the mistake of buying the Evo 4G on launch day expecting WiMax to be good. Wouldn't make that mistake again.

So i've been paying an additional $10 a month per line on my phones with 4G capabilities. Initally I had the OG EVO, 3D, and now Epic Touch. Its been well over a year probably close to two and I still dont have 4G not that this is something I need but it is something ive been paying for.
I dont live in some rural area (San Diego) so I dont see why they are lagging. Maybe this whole transition from 4G to LTE but that change was fairly recent.
Of couse when you call sprint they are not going to give you any time frame.
So I guess im stuck still paying the additional $10 on each line for a service I cannot access where I live and havent since day one.
Oh well, hopefully once LTE gets going SD will be one of the first to run it.
Anyone with some inside info care to provide some good news?
Sprint now defines that $10 as a smartphone surcharge and applies it to anything that runs iOS, Android, Bby, or WinMo 4g or not, although I don't think sprint has any current smartphones that aren't 4g.
You would've been better off to fight the 4g battle when the evo came out IMO.

True..
At the time when the EVO came out I believe was the only 4G phone they carried so I guess was under the impression the charge was for 4G but I do see it has changed to a general charge for smart phones.
So I guess at this point its just a waiting game.
Techincally the evo was out first, but idunno where you lived, but the Epic was available first here due to false demand scams by HTC... either that or they made them one at a time. Seriously didnt you get enough of this topic in the evo forums?? I know we got sick of it in the Epic forums...

4G LTE...not happening.
Keep in mind, Sprint's 4G LTE is their own, with their own network, own buildout, and own spectrum.
I have read in several places Q3 for L.A. and Orange County and Q4 for San Diego so its safe to say before Christmas you will be rocking LTE

Best answer to sprint lte is 3 years before most places fully see it. Hell I have been in a wimax test arear for over 2 years and at a sprint store I heard a salesman tell a customer there was no 4g at all but when it gets here it will be awesome. When sprints own staff has no idea 4g is even in their own service area how can I even trust them to put towers up.
Good for you people in great big luscious data driven cities, sucks every where else
I have had several sprint employees tell me that here in Virginia it should be within 2 years.
I have a question of my own. I have had a few people tell me that when LTE comes around we will have to have new phones because the hardware like in the Epic Touch will not work on LTE. Any truth to this?

Yes if you want lte you will have to get a lte capable phone..... Ie sgs3 HTC evo4g lte , etc .... The hardware in this phone will not work on lte . But until you get lte if you have 4g now there is no reason to change unless you're a phone junkie like me

This summer I am guessing since that is when they are releasing the Evo Lte, Galaxy Nexus etc. Boston market looks like lte will cover almost the entire state, and if it's anything like how when the original htc evo launch, lte will most likely be already on in boston market.
Question to anyone I called sprint and asked about the Lte roll out dates of course there is not much of a schedule to it if any but they said we have Lte capable devices out so I said if I purchase a lte capable device will I be without 4g until lte reaches my area they said no the lte devices can run wimax and lte so if that is the case why can't our epic touch run lte when it becomes available in our area.I think they are full of sh!t and just saying that to get us to buy a new lte phone.Unless the new phones will have hardware in them that allows them to run to different types of technology

I guess it's possible that new phones could have hardware that works with LTE and WiMax, but I can't confirm this. I agree that the person you spoke with could be feeding you BS. It's been my experience that Sprint is a very dysfunctional company. I wouldn't trust anything they say that's not in writing!
As far as the E4GT being able to use LTE, I think it's lacking the hardware to do so. Maybe someone with more knowledge on LTE can comment.

Fact is the Epic 4G Touch, can not and will not run on LTE - EVER. The Exynos processor is not LTE compatible, therefor the Skyrocket variants both have Snapdragons in them.
As for other phones, it would be theoretically possible to build a phone with both radios but that would be dumb, because space in the phone is tight to begin with, plus it would suck on the batter twice as much. I believe there is a rumor that the Photon may have both in it, but I really doubt it, and I also really doubt that any new LTE phones would have "old" WiMax radios built into them.
Sprint told me that our epic 4g touch will work on lte.... I know this not to be true..... Just remember that those wonderful customer service reps do not spend the time researching our devices like we do... So they are very mis informed

There is ONE Sprint device that can run EV-DO, LTE, and WiMax, and that is their upcoming hotspot. That's it. I was a technician at Sprint, and to sum it up like the other guys said, it is impossible for WiMax devices to pick up LTE, and also even if you implemented an LTE modem into the Epic 4G Touch, Exynos wouldn't work with it. Not even the new generation of Exynos processors does LTE, so prepare to be disappointed when the Sprint S3 has a Snapdragon S4 (which isn't bad). I think this is gonna be like OG Evo vs OG Epic, where the Evo 4G LTE is gonna win.
Me personally? I just got my Galaxy Nexus (Sprint version of course). Trying development vs power this time. I don't like the route HTC is going with bootloader unlocks that aren't real unlocks. Plus I only paid $400 for this baby
Once LTE service his your area, and BTW, San Antonio, Dallas, and Houston are all in the process now of roll out, you will still have service with 4G, but no you will not get LTE service, the performance difference is noticeable, but not enough to run out and buy a new phone over. Those who still have dinosaurs that do not have 4G capability, as well as crapPhone owners well lose service as 3G is phased out, hence the coming crapPhone 5 which is an LTE phone. E4GT well not be LTE compatible, however GS3 IS an LTE phone with the superior quad core Exynos processor that has been fixed to support LTE and benchmarked higher than any other phone currently available or set for release soon. So, if you are thinking of upgrading to be LTE ready when it happens, research your phone and it's stats, in the end, only you can decide which phone is best for you and your needs, study the processors for phones you are considering, check benchmark scores, and ask people you see with those phones their opinion...in the end your choice can't be wrong if it meets your needs

Galaxy Nexus is a decent phone. The coming hotspot is getting horrible reviews about constant LOS problems, and the US gs3, Sprint or otherwise, will have the Exynos processors, again, a little research and digging goes a long way....Snapdragon 4 is a decent processor, agreed, and as a former OG EVO owner, I believe that once again just as OG EVO vs OG EPIC, Samsung and the GS3 will prove to be the superior device, just in case though
I am getting my EVO 4G lte on release day, and adding a third line to get the Blue GS3, winner stays with me, and loser goes to some lucky bidder on EBay, be watching for an EVO 4G LTE listed by same screen name, current benchmarks on both phones show result, but I wanna test on my own. The added line will get a new whichever phone wins, and my son is super excited about his new GS3 as well...just sayin

EDIT: the new generation of Exynos processors is currently supporting LTE, that issue was fixed, announced and proven at the phones debut in London. They'll be doing another "launch" in NYC next week, and have already confirmed Exynos in every carriers version of GS3, not gonna repeat issues seen with GS2 because carriers want to mod the device to make it their own, Samsung clearly stated..."all carriers will release phone on same day, as shipped from Samsung Corp. with only addition of carrier specific applications allowed....any carriers not agreed to release with no hardware modifications will not receive the phone as well as any carrier not prepared to offer phone on date set forth in contracts between carrier and Samsung Corp." Sorry if this has been brought up before but with Googles latest revision 6, would it be worth getting a nexus over an epic touch 4g? I have been offered a trade of a nexus for my et4g and thought I would check with everyone to see if it would be worth it with the new revision. If the phone is much better now really the only thing that would prolly bother me is that 4g lte will not be in my area for a few months so I would have to stick with sprints crap 3g unless it is better on the nexus. Horrible 3g on my epic.

Latest software? Nope. Ask verizon and nexus nexus owners about how that latest software is going. Latest hardware? Nope. When it was released, it was a mid end device hardware wise.
Biggest l deal breaker should be the network. It seems like you already have wimax 4g. Always use a phone for its network and not network for phone. Even if lte is going to start launching in your market, it's going to be a few towers here or there with random coverage that slowly increases as more sites come online. Sprint lte market launches with 30-40% or even less towers completed.
Ask yourself if you're really willing to wait 6-9 months for lte in most places around you.

Well I am in Austin Texas and apparently we are supposed to be getting it by the end of October or November. The wimax 4g is definitely better than 3g but was just checking if the update makes it much better than the et4g and if 3g was better. On the paranoid thread it said that the update males the nexus pretty much kill every phone out in terms of snappiness and speed so I did not know if anyone had any experience with it. No microsd support but it is 32gb storage so that helps. Better screen so.. just seeing if it was worth it or not for a straight up trade and then I would purchase a quad core when they come out.
Indeed it is a active network vision market but iirc most upgrades are in the Waco region. Don't know if Austin itself is upgraded yet. If nv hasn't reached your city... Speedy nexus or not : you will hate it for slow data speeds.
Ur choice but my warning to you is watch the data speeds especially 3g. Austin market projected completion is the end or q1 2013...

Well one of my techs recently just traded his E4GT for a nexus, and he couldn't be happier. Even with the slightly inferior processor, that thing runs like an entirely different animal with jelly bean on it. It blows our device out of the water in terms of just general UI awesomeness.
Consider this: the nexus 7 posts similar benchmarks to the iPhone 5, and that's with the much hyped but still underwhelming tegra 3. Not to mention being underclocked. Jelly Bean really does make that much of a difference.
Now would I do it? No. But that's just because I'm attached to my devices as if they were my children lol.

I actually have both devices at the moment. A Galaxy Nexus and an Epic Touch, if I had the option to I would trade in for a second galaxy nexus.
does sprint let you switch between devices of the same price?

No but I wish they did. Someone on craigslist wants to trade.
Think I am going to go to the sprint store near my house and see if I can live with the 3g speeds on the nexus. While it might perform better, I use the internet a lot and I think that would be my bottom line.
You could just turn off 4G on the E4GT................ to see how it is

Apparently the 3g is supposedly a little quicker than the et4g. Dunno if that is true..
Well went and checked out the nexus.. despite the lte that is not out yet, the nexus is no match for a rooted epic touch. Sticking with the et4g.
