Hello all, I've been having this issue with my camera making a buzzing sound when I try to record videos. Granted, it does not happen all the time, but it does happen and it's annoying. Wondering if anyone else has the issue, is this a software issue, or is it just my phone and I need a replacement??
I did notice this start after I began to install the Stock Rooted ICS Leaked OSs. I'm currently running FD24 Stock Rooted. Thank you guys in advance for your help and advice.
I actually came on to ask the same question. Just buzzed when trying to snap a picture with flash on. I'm running the new AOKP build 34. Sounds like the from is causing the camera to overwork?

Try shaking it when it's buzzing. Let me know if it stops.
Had this same issue before with my wifes.
Well 25 pics snapped with flash and 3 video records with no buzz. If I were to shake to stop does that mean a loose part or something of the sort?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
No, it's just the camera focusing. Sometimes when it buzzes you'll notice the everything is very out of focus. The camera lens actually moves when focusing and that buzzing noise is the lens at it's max (+/-) and still trying to move. Not sure why shaking it makes it stop but it does. Seems to be self correcting also. After a while it stops occurring.
Makes sense. The pics I snapped at the time weren't very focused either. I appreciate the info.

myne does not buzz but makes a noticable sound seemingly stemming from the actual lens its self everytime i open the camera app , which has just started recently , i am fearing a hardware failure , anyone else ever hear this noise when the opening the camera app?
Any description of the noise? The one we're talking about stems from the same place too.

Thank you for all your replies, glad I'm not the only one with this issue... I have been shaking and tapping the phone to make it stop when it has happened. Just very annoying when you are video recording and it happens. It's never happened while taking pictures. I thought it might be hardware related and there might a fix or solution besides shaking...

TRS, not sure if the reason is the camera being overworked. It seems to me that it's more of a hardware issue. When the buzzing does occur I can hear and feel it towards the center of the phone, not near the lens.
I am not sure if mine was from the center or lens since it was only for a second. I assumed the lens issue was right. Doing research I have only found one other case and reason was not given. Sounds like the answer is lens or hardware. Hrm

Yeah i cant feel an actual buzz or vibration and it only occures for like 1 second to 2 when the camera first starts , and has dissapeared all together on Mijhz new AKOP ICS rom.
Mine makes the same buzzing sound and shaking it does help but I can hear something rattle in the lense so my guess is something has come loose that causes the buzzing.

I buzzed twice last night and it happened on opening the camera then switching to video camera. It was in fact the lens and shaking did fix it. Looks like hardware and I might just have to figure out how to reset my binary count seeing as it is at 22 lol. Anyone know of a way to do so?

If you're on ICS just use the Triangle away app then flash back to a completely stock EL29 rom.
If you're just going to trade it in with Sprint for another one then don't worry if it bricks it in the process. Sad part is that there's really on indication if this buzzing is just a fluke event or if it's actually a sign of hardware failure.

There has to be some sort reason or cause, whether it's a hardware or software issue, that is causing our cameras to buzz and hum when we open the app or switch from video to stills in the app... Just looking for an answer so that if it's hardware, then I'd go get a replacement... Thank you.
If anyone is still paying attention to this thread I am guessing it is hardware. It now buzzes for me every time I open the camera. If I click the screen and it catches a focus it stops. My reason for commingle back for an update is I jumped over to CWM9A5 and now it buzzes continuously when I run the torch. Since I can now do it on command I think I am going to order me a jig and reset my BC and flash complete stock and take it in to show Sprint!

you dont need a jig just download triangle away from the market, it will reset your flash counter and remove the yellow triangle
I'm also having this on my phone. It honestly started after my first ics rom and continued on every build so idk if it's ics related. Once my camera focus it stops but I can get it to do it again by repeatedly tapping on different parts of the screen till the lens has a hard time focusing. I'm assuming the camera is struggling to focus which is the cause of this.

I bought an evo on release date and it had a few problems so I took it back and got a new one. About 2 hours after I got my new one home I heard it making a really fast clicking/tapping sound. (click click click tap tap tap) I thought the sound was coming from my speaker so I put it up to my ear after a few seconds I looked at the speaker and noticed that it wasnt the speaker but that it was the camera. I could see the lens physically moving back and forth really fast. Naturally I started the camera app to see what would happen. I snapped a picture and noticed that it was very blurry. I then went to camera settings and changed them and its still very blurry. Its almost as if the camera just refused to focus (looked like I needed glasses)... Naturally, the next step I took was to try to record a video... Same thing very blurry but sound is perfect. Next I tried the front facing camera. It was fine.
I have tried re-starting it a bunch of times... tried cleaning the lens...
About 4 or 5 hours later I took another picture and it was fine. Now the problem is intermittent and if I take 10 pictures 3 or 4 will be in focus and the others wont.
1. My phone is not rooted
2. I have not dropped it
3. It has not gotten wet.
4. Babied it the whole time I've had it.
5. Tried turning off auto focus and using manual
Any suggestions?
Take it back.

Ive had my evo for almost two years and I installed the cm9 rom for it and the camera was having this problem so I went back to my backup and same problem. It wont focus. It acts like its focusing but just wont. Also I've opened the phone several times so a replacement is out of the question.

Okay so I just got back from school, and I wanted to take some pics of things. Only for me to go to the official stock Camera app for it to say Camera failed. So I was thinking that an app had tampered with my camera while I was out, so I cleared the RAM and went back to the Camera app only to see that the Camera was pure BLUR! No biggie. Tapped to focus, it lit green but it was still blur! Now that's when I lost it. I had cleaned the lens, went to different camera apps, even ODINED back to stock EG30 from Calkulin's ROM. As of now it's just sitting on the charger quiet. Now what the hell am I going to tell Sprint??? What the hell did Samsung do to my camera? I want to Instagram so much stuff, now I can't. -___- Who else is suffering this issue & how do I fix?
Possibly just hardware failure. Stuff breaks sometimes for no apparent reason. Take to sprint and tell them the camera quit working. Its a warranty issue. No need to give any additional info.

I just double checked, my old Galaxy S II LTE (aka Skyrocket) has a noticeable rattle when you shake it but I'm not hearing it on the S III (perhaps it's more subdued?). A quick Google search however shows that several other people have experienced the same thing and the general consensus seems to be that it's nothing to worry over.

I am running stock with the Perseus kernel.

I had this happen once. I thought the wind was blowing on the mic.
Do you happen to have a case on your phone? There might be something that taps the case and might be picked up by the speaker as a pop.

Yes, I do have a soft-shell case. I thought it might be that too, but I took it off and did some test filming and got the same result. This is really starting to tick me off now; I've had the phone for 5 or 6 weeks now and have only noticed this. What a pain!
I have also done voice recording using a voice recorder app, and no problems with that.
I tried a different camera app and the videos still have the popping.
No other suggestions?
Ok, just linking a video so you can hear what I'm talking about, in case it triggers something in someone's brain....
Again, this has happened on stock, as well as CleanRom. Different camera apps used. I've tried with data off. I've tried with SD card out. I've lowered system volume to zero. I've removed the case. There is no such issue when speaking on the phone, nor is it present when using a voice recorder app.
Everything else about the phone is perfect, but I'm ready to smash it to bits over this, I'm so pissed off. :silly:

To narrow down a software VS hardware issue, the first thing you'll want to do is restore to stock. No root, no kernel, no nuffin. If the issue persists, that is usually a purdy good indicator of a hardware issue. Should that be the case, a warranty replacement may be your best option. If the issue persists after a replacement, I'd say its a good bet its something in your environment/situation that is causing the popping.

Thanks for that. Yes, at this point I've tried everything I can think of. I don't believe it has anything to do with environment or anything, as it happens all the time. It has been driving me batty for the last week; I've done nothing but obsess over it. I hadn't noticed it before, but once I had, I started looking at every video I've taken since I bought it and found that it has been going on the whole time. I got the phone at the end of January. One of the first vids I took was a cpl of days later, which I put on youtube. I checked that vid out and sure enough the issue is there.
I called Samsung yesterday and got a UPS shipping label from them to send it in. I'm not keen on having to do all the work to unroot and make like I never rooted it, lose it for up to 3 weeks, and (if they send a replacement back), lose the $30 I spent on my Zagg screen protector.
I guess I will try what you've said; restore to pure stock and pray to God. Thanks!
I've installed CM10 and the camera with it is flawless. Why do you think that is?
Sorry for bumping this up, but I've done all kinds of experimenting and have pretty much determined that it is solely a TW based issue.
But what I'd like to ask now is: using Snap Camera, I get the same result (popping noise). However, Snap Camera has a setting for "Use Alternate Mic", which, when I choose that, there is no popping. So the question is: does anyone know how I can make the stock camcorder use the 'alternate mic' like Snap Camera does?
I have no idea where that would be edited.
Please! Thanks!

Does the camera record stereo sound with cm10 too?
So heading says it all, did you have the issue before you installed it and did the ROM fix the issue? I've done the low ISO, I missed around with the settings and it does not fix or make it at all better. I will not settle for a replacement device that is not brand new so I am looking for a software fix. I figure a ROM made from a developer phone would fix it since their software is not affected by this issue. So let me know if you have an answer for this. The key has to be that you had the issue before you installed the ROM. Don't trash the tread with junk or speculations of what might fix it I am only interested in facts at this point I've done all the Google might fix and none did....reply away!

So I read an article on engadget that said the 4.3 update made improvements to the camera in low light settings. I was previously avoiding 4.3/5.5 ROMs because you can't change the lock screen image independently of the home screen. Anyhow, I flashed it last night and have been snapping away with the camera. The pictures seem better.
It's a shame, other than the camera this phone is nearly perfect.

I don't know, it seems better but I don't have an objective way to measure it. I know that previously my newborn son's face always looked purple in low light pictures and now his skin looks more true to his natural color.
Also, over exposure doesn't seem as bad.

So when you use a 4.3 sense rom found in the forums, like the one I'm running which is the NuSense 4.3 RC5, it seems like its "fixed" but what actually happens when you put your hand over the lens is that the blue hue or red will show up, but as soon as the phone detects the hue it goes away. It seems to keep doing it in a repetitive pattern.Hue shows up, then goes away, then shows up again, then away, unlike before on 4.2 where if it shows up, it'll stay there.
My guess is that on 4.2.2 like others have said, when the ISO is raised too far, the hue showed up. So really, it seems like HTC just gave the a camera a limit to not raise the ISO too far.
It's "sorta" (not really) fixed. It's a hardware issue that's been somewhat softened by software implementations.
Sounds about exactly right for what can be done. The low-light picture taking is really a hard thing to accomplish, me thinks. I have a Canon DSLR, and fast lenses are expensive (apart from prime lenses), so I'm not surprised that this overprmised technology is not meeting expectation. That said, do people really use their camera phones that heavily? I don't. And it certainly wasn't a feature I considered when buying this phone. Not to knock any enthusiasts, but this defect has made me realize how many folks are satisfied with phone camera fidelity.
For any of you interested in photography. $50 spent on a 50mm prime will blow your brains out, expectation-wise.

I use my camera as a camera not as some sort of blue noise detection meter. If the hue is gone from my pics and the ISO isn't so high that there is a bunch of color noise then I'm happy and for all practical uses I'd say it's pretty well fixed.
I tried putting my hand over the lens, after about 90s it started turning kinda blue around the edges then would fade to black. Better than before.

The problem with it still is that because it fades in and out, if you take the picture at the wrong time, the hue will be in the picture. That means you have to time when to take the picture, which I'm sure to many is absolutely not fixed. It's still got much room to improve.

I can tell you this with certainty.. if you tell HTC you need a repair to take care of a camera issue, they will accept it as a legit reason for service. I told them my camera was showing the red/blue and having trouble changing a focal point once it caught one. They tried talking me into waiting for 4.3. I refused. They opened a service order, I sent it out, about a week later I had my same phone back with none of the original problems. I don't know if they swapped out the hardware or what the deal is but when I cover the lens it stays pitch black.
Yes, it hurts being without a phone for a week but it's better than living with a phone that disappoints you for some reason. And especially when that reason can be remedied.

I'm a crack flasher so I flash just about every ROM released just to give it a go and I have to have a ROM (4.2.2, 4.3 or 4.4) that has remedied the issue. HTC swears up and down that there is a camera update coming with 4.3 but seeing as how AT&T and Sprint folks said it helped nothing at all in their forums I'm leaning towards a hardware issue. Sucks but we might be stuck with it.

Well unfortunately I can't be without my phone for more than a couple of days. I use it for work and personal. Too bad HTC doesn't have designated repair centers we can take our phones to for repairs of manufacturer defects. HTC should have acknowledged the issue and authorized cell provider stores where the device was purchased to do exchanges after the traditional 30 day exchange was up. I tried to exchange mine at the Verizon store I bought mine at and they wouldn't do it. Said I still had to go through warranty repair. It's understandable on VZW's end bc it isn't their fault HTC shipped jank phones but on the customer service side it makes both companies look bad. Glad yours got fixed though.

Just to give an update, the new stock 4.4 gpe rom does a better job of preventing the blue/red noise from appearing. When I cover my hand it appears for half a second then is completely black for the rest of the time
