Hi! I noticed that according to Franco's app my CPU temp is almost always above 40 degrees just after some usage (Facebook,browsing,texting) and only drops to around 28 degrees after being idle. As this is causing throttling I wanted to ask if it was just me or are these normal temperatures?
I am running Franco Kernel r98 with no CPU overclocking or undervolting

Agreed. 60c is probably a conservative termal design limit (I'd expect something at a minimum of 80-100c before there was any actual damage to the CPU. Though, that kind of temp would probably damage your HAND or the plastic housing before the silicon. Anyone know why anyone would force throttling at only 40c? Power conservation comes to mind.

That's like hot plugging good in theory but real world says other governors give same battery life and without the instability lagginess.

I though someone did some real world testing a while back and found that 2x700MHz drew less power than 1x1350MHz?
Wich undervolting values do you prefer with the latest nightly from Franco?

I am on franco kernel r180. I actually am using default mV. And have seen great results this far.
Just as well, using 25% brightness and only used Wi-Fi (4G buries my battery. Using a stock GN (Verizon) battery). Here's some photos.
Edit: I accidentally reversed the order of the screen shots from the way I wanted. Anyway, its been a great kernel. Kudos to franco. He's very smart. I wish I could do something this awesome.
One last thing, I've kept Max CPU at 1036MHz. It keeps the phone cool as the other side of the pillow. When I'm only using xda premium app, some light web browsing and Pandora running, 1036MHz is perfectly fine. I hope you find this useful.

Running AOKP B38 + Franco M3, and seeing great results with these voltages. If I lower it -25 mv across the board, the phone gets hot easily. And -50 mv across the board, and it'll randomly reboot when turning on Wi-Fi or while playing music, multitasking, etc.
Also, usually have it running at 728 MHz, unless I actually need to get stuff done and I up it to 1036 MHz. I've never had to set it at 1228 MHz.

The upper value doesn't really matter at all since the CPU is hardly ever sitting there.

I just wanted to post an update on how I am doing with Franco kernel r180. Just to be clear, this is not a continuation of my results from yesterday. Today's results are after a full charge.
CPU settings remain the same in terms of min and max, 384/1036 respectively, mainly on Wi-Fi (was on 3G for a good 20 minutes when I walked to the local CVS) and 25% brightness (again, shifted that to 100% when I went to CVS, but brought that back down to 25% when I got home).
I am close to 2.5 hours of screen time with 50% battery used. I have kept the screen on for a long time for testing reasons. Also, a 23 minute phone call was done on speaker phone with screen on as well. Phone stays very cool with these CPU settings.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
Edit: as for under volting, I'm at (all in mV units of course) 1400, 1300, 1250, 1225, 1125, 950 ,900 for (all in MHz units of course) 1536, 1344, 1228, 1036, 729, 384,192 respectively. Again, my CPU boundaries are stated above so I'm never at settings such as 1534, 1334, etc.

I got these results using AOKP build 36 and Franco Kernel 166. 3G on when screen is on with occaisonal LTE (no WiFi usage). CPU clocked between 196MHz and 1036MHz with 384MHz for when the screen is off. Auto screen brightness. The last 3 images are my voltage settings. The saved voltages are the ones that were used.
I had a slightly longer screen on time and battery life. In my experience the voltage didn't affect heat output, but clocking the CPU at 1036MHz instead of 1228MHz did.
Is there a way to monitor how much power each frequency uses during screen on and screen off? I have my phone underclocked and caped at 96-192 mhz when the screen is off and 96 - 1512 mhz screen on. I'd like to see if using the 96 mhz is actually worth it power wise. I'm trying to find the best screen off profile without the wake super lag I experience with capping the screen off at 96 mhz. I'm using kt747 kernel and the Ktoonservative governor.

There's Better Battery Stats, it'll give you the CPU usage (frequencies) along with kernel and other usage.
my note 8 get very hot when i play modern combat 4 the temp about 71 degree (measured by system tuner ) and the battery temperture about 37 or more and the left side of the screen becomes very hot and the battery drain quickly is this will harm my device sorry for my bad english ??

This might be a question better answered by Samsung (unless it is a carrier model). Many questions though....
Does it get too hot to hold? Are you charging it while playing? Is your tablet oc/ov? What is the ambient temperature where playing?

yes some times - never charging while using it - iam running the stock rom witout any modification or oc - the cpu temperture while playing about 71 degreer

But its not a problem. Your device will power down or turn down CPUs when you reach a certain temperature threshold. At least I know my phone does. I've never seen temperatures like that on any of my devices. The most I've ever seen even when over clocked to 2.1 GHz is in the 50s. Even then I'm not worried about it damage isn't done until the high 80s 90s. But how are you getting these temps. Are you outside in 90 degree heat gaming? I even have my GPU way over clocked and I never seen 70.

in modern combat 4 it reaches 70 c and the left side of the screen become very hot
Yeah, only problem I had with this device and my Note 2. (same processor). These bad boys heat up. Especially if you do alot of flashing of roms.
Yea I ran my note 2 really hot playing dead trigger last night and overclocked 1.92 ghz plus 733 mhz gpu overclock but I still dont have heat readings of more than 56 celcius. And I have an app that monitors cpu temperature while im playing so I can see it in real time. Maybe your device is having a problem. Oh do you have a real thick case? That can cause heat buildup. If I leave , y case on my note 2 while playing a game it causes less heat dissipation and runs almost 10 degrees warmer. You might wanna consider that

i never used any case for my note but there are some Crackling in the left of the back cover of the device when you click on it you feel it is not a good compound sorry for my bad english

Why will undervolting harm your CPU or battery? I can see stability issues with undervolting and have experienced them while experimenting with the settings. I cant see how it would harm the hardware though. As someone said above. The device should shut down if the processor gets too hot to protect itself. Also, undervolting should reduce the temperature.
The built in powersaving option in touchwiz will underclock your cpu to 1.1GHz. you can set it back to your standard setting with a push of a single button the menu.
I overclock and undervolt and have no worries about damage. I have had issues with my tablet turning itself off sometimes, but it has only happened on particularly hot days. I reduced my OC from 1.8 to 1.7Ghz. And i reduced my undervolt from -75 to -50 vs stock as I was having the occasional crash.
Are the CPU and GPU on the same processor or located in the same area of the tablet? I hear alot on hear about the CPU temp making the device extremely warm but wondered how the GPU acted. If you underclock the CPU, does this put more load on to the GPU when playing games or will the GPU load be the same regardless.

i cant undervolted because the CivZ-Sb kernel is not working with 4.2.2
My average CPU temp is 34°C (93°F), and I go up to 67°C (152°F) when I play games (like GTA-VC).
Do you think it's normal that kind of temperature from the S4Pro ?
Actually this is really low...
67c on high load like games, which stress the cpu?
My device goes to 80c easily, starts to throttle cpu speed and shut down cores, all of the devices do that. This temps are normal.
By the way which app you used to measure that temps?

Personally I use FauxClock.
After a few minutes you'll see the high temps and the cores throttle.
Oh, joining this question. Just got a 32Gb LTE version and found out it's getting quite warm when playing something like Osmos, Doodle Jump or something. I don't know how to get the exact temperature, cause monitors I' found on market, show only the battery temp. Anyway who else gets his N7 warm/hot when some heavy app is running? Asking, cause my friend also got the same N7 and I don't remember it to be hot even after running 3D games for quite a long time.

Apparently, your StabilityTest app requires more power than GTA-VC, I recorded a 82°C with a 50mV undervolt (on Franco r3 kernel) after a 8min StabilityTest, then I just stopped it. I'm a little afraid of this kind of temperature :/ Are you sure it's okay ? I don't know well the mobile device world...
That's the real temperature , even higher,
And you don't need to worry too much.
Your device will turn off if the CPU reaches too high CPU temp,
And 80-90 c is fine. The soc is built to work on that temps.
As you could see your CPU shutdown cores and lower cores speed while the temperatures going higher, that's called throttle.
You don't need to worry too much.

StabilityTest can load all 4 CPU cores 100%. You won't find a game that does that.
The CPU will be thermally throttled (clock frequency will be limited when the temperature is too high), so you won't damage anything.
And is the average temp of 45-50 °C normal? I'm just using Skype and surfing the internet.

If you run a adb logcat while gaming you start to see alerts going off for high temperatures when it gets around 70°c or higher. I found it very interesting that it was alerting when it got that high instead of ignoring it like you say till 80-90°c.

Games use GPU which adds much more heat to the conclusion.
Stability Test don't.

The device doesn't ignore it till 80-90c. It's start at 60c.
I just say that it's safe temp for the soc to operate. Which means your cpu never use all cores, and the cores that active wouldn't be at the highest speed, while the cpu reaches 60c, more heat more throttle.
Ok thanks to all of you, so it's like computers : if it's too hot, it will stop before it reaches a dangerous temperature.

Those are quite ok. If you include skype with voice/video calling ofcourse. I just get about 30-40 with just surfing and chatting facebook messenger skype/yahoo/viber on background
I'm fairly sure the CPU tends to downclock itself not because IT is getting too hot, but because it's generating too much heat for the battery. Almost all CPUs can easily withstand upwards of 80C. Batteries, on the other hand, can't.
