Backing up media to make changing ROMs easier? - Kindle Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

If possible, whilst switching between between ROMs (as we all seem to be doing as people get closer to a 100% working form of ICS), I would like to backup all of my CBR and EPUB files to a storage partition. I'm using TWRP.
Basically, is it possible? Would that partition then show up as an external SD card, and will all apps and OSs be able to see/use that space?
If I can get this going, I can sit in my house on wi-fi and have a new ROM running with all of my data and media in less than an hour, ready for a day of testing.
TIA!
And thanks to all the teams working feverishly to smooth out ICS - I've been blown away by my hardy little tablet!

safe to delete?

I have been doing the trial and error method for the past 6 days with roms, hopefully finally finding the one for me to stick with for a while. (otherwise my wife may either divorce me or start digging my grave in the backyard)
My question is how many Nandroid backups should I keep? I currently have three in the Nandroid folder I show through ES file explorer. Are these safe to delete all but the most recent? What is the easiest way to make a backup of my current rom?
You can delete old ones so long as you know you have a solid one on there. You can also move themto your computer / external HDD to save space as they can add up. I keep a good one handy and store some other ones for various reasons.

Keep as many or as few as you want, or are limited by disk space.
If disk space is no concern, keep 'em all. For practical purposes, I'd keep the last 3 or 4. Append a meaningful description devoid of spaces to the bdes* directory name so you have some clue what's unique about that backup.
The most obvious feature of most roms is the way the UI is configured. Keep in mind, that using a third party launcher configured YOUR way, you can make almost any rom look like any other. Be more concerned with what's under the hood than pure appearance. I recently switched from the rom in my sig to cm7, but the UI is 99% unchanged because I'm using the same launcher I used in evio (adw ex). The difference is in the status bar, pull down, and most importantly battery life (better). ymmv
I have a good cm7 set up and a good mikefroyo set up. I always update the nandroid before I flash something new if the ROM im wiping out of is stable.
Thanks for the advice so far...I may need to move some to my PC soon until I upgrade to a bigger SD card....gotta get rid of 8GB card as with this phone I know I will want more space!!!

Questions on best practice and most stable ROMS

So far I have always been running rooted stock ROMS. From what I read they tent to be very stable, the battery last longer, and do not lose some features (4G, HDMI) etc.
However lately, probably because of the apps I have installed, the phone is pretty slow, the memory on the phone is running out and does not work properly.
It is time for a complete wipe. However I am not the kind the person that change rom once a week. I would like something for the long term.
I have a few questions (feel free to answer to a subset of them):
1) I can I maximize the free space on the phone? On stock you can update a stock app (ex flash, acrobat reader, etc) but you cannot uninstalled. I was wondering if after the update, I have now the app taking twice as much space that is supposed to.
2) What is the best way to backup all the apps on the phone and restore them quickly, being able to chose what and what not? I am using Titanium Backup but it is not clear what is an installed app and what is system app. How do I guarantee that I do not lose the app data? I am trying to find a way that once I update the ROM I can configure/restore the apps that I want without having to spend hours on it. What I am afraid is to install/restore something that it is not going to work but it takes spaces on the phone. One of the thing I really want to keep is the email configuration (3 gmails account, 1 hotmail and the link with Facebook accounts).
3) I am using App 2 SD Free but there are some large apps that cannot be moved on the SD (gmail, facebook, qik, flash, maps, twitter, Google Music, G+, etc). Does any work around exist to save precious space on the phone?
4) Regarding stability, not bloated, and full features available on OTA (4G, Bluetooth, HDMI, etc) What is the best ROM? I was looking into Fresh Evo (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20101297), Swagged Out (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1258932), Sprint Updated 2.0 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321340), Clean Rom 1.0 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1351890). I am leaning toward Fresh Evo because the author have been updating for a long time). Any suggestions?

Use A2SD, in terminal type:
SU
a2sd cachesd
Moves your Dalvik Cache to the SD Card. Free'd up about 200+MB on mine

It's actually very easy to tell which are user apps with TB. They're the ones in white text

MIUI, as long as you don't need 4G, everything else works and it's extremely stable. Other than a few times trying other ROMs, I've been using it as a Daily since June

Thank you for your answers. I have some follow up questions:
1)

What is the quickest way to use terminal? Do I need the dev tools on my computer and put the phone in debug mode?
Where is the Dalvik Cache normally stored? I thought it was on RAM. Since it is a cache, I would expect that it changes often. Is it not going to wear out the sd card quickly?
2) The point is that I want to save also some system settings (ex: remembered password of wifis, browser history, sync settings, etc). Last backup save 203 items. It is going to be a pain to go thought one by one.
4) I looked at MIUI but I ruled it out because it does not support 4G. I use it every now and then.
Like you I was having some problems with my rooted stock (low phone memory, slow and some other performance issues).
I downloaded ROM Manager and then made a backup of my rooted stock. You can also do it manually by booting into recovery but ROM Manager is easier though some people will say is more prone to errors. Also download Titanium Backup or something similar and save all of the apps (both download and system apps).
Once I backed up my rooted stock ROM I then downloaded and installed the latest Cyanogenmod. As this does not have HTC Sense or bloatware I immediately got a significant amount of free space that handles all that I load.
One thing with Cyanogenmod 7.1, some people like myself will have freezing issues if you have less than 130 MB of free space on the phone. This is not a problem for me as I have more than that available. I chose Cyanogoenmod ROM over MIUI ROM as Cyanogenmod allows for 4G. Take a look though at all of the ROMs out there and decide for yourself.
I find that everything is running faster now and I no longer have the Bloat that Sprint put on the phone. You can also move more apps over to the SD Card freeing up more internal memory.
Apps like Flash and Adobe Reader can be downloaded from the Market and are updated just like any other app.
Good luck
Uhh, no to ROM Manager. It's known to cause problems.
The Terminal is an app. You use it on your phone.
AS for system settings, only a very few can be successfully moved from ROM to ROM. The only thing I backup is my Alarms. You don't have to do them one at a time, you know. Hit Menu, Batch and then you can do them en masse
Depending on how many apps you load on your phone you may want to re-partition your SD card if you have the space and create a 1-2 gig ext2 or ext3 partition to use for apps2sd. The main reason I rooted my EVO was because I constantly kept running out of space on my phone. I'm an app addict though and have been known to have up to 200+ apps on my phone before I re-flash it with another rom. With a 1.5 gig partition and apps2d, I have never run out of space for apps on my phone though If you do decide to re-partition your SD card you will need to completely backup your SD card to your PC first as it will wipe all data on the card. I have a 16 gig class 10card in my EVO and the speed is pretty good.
i would give energy sensation a go, i was using that rom as my daily it is really staple, great battery life and improves the video recording to 1080p HD as well as plenty of other little tweaks here and there....I am running ics-decks-pre-alpha7 which i am really liking only thing is you would have to be willing to give up your camera til a stable alpha or beta is released. I hope this helps...
I have been running the Sprint Updated 2.0 Final for a few weeks (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20631581 ). I also re-partition my SD card with 1.5Gb (if I remember well). So far everything is good except:
1) I have 99Mb free on the phone. I think the main reason is that I disinstall some of the Sprint Bloatware and haven't reinstall all the apps. However I started having problems when I had 60Mb available before the upgrade to this new ROM. So I am afraid that I am getting close :-/
2) Wifi Tether has problems. I am experience the problem here: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/issues/detail?id=1288 .
The workaround with Barnacle alleviate the problem but beside being annoying that I have to start Bernacle first and then the Wi-Fi tether, it sometimes stop working (I think it is when I I use the 4G and the 4g connection is lost) and I have to go though the cycle again :-/
Best,

Im on Mikg v3.0 w. Less freedom kernel and its extremely stable smooth and complete im not sure if it has 4g (im on metro so only got 3g) i do reflash like crazy but this ROM has me pretty satisfied i havent flashed in a while u might lose a thing or two but nothing u cant live w. Out.

If u want AOSP evo-deck-(gingerbread 2.3.7) only takes up 13mb of internal on initial boot 19mb after flashing gapps and its really stable too u might have to fix gps but thats the only issue i ran into (which is just a flashable zip if you do have to) and you can move the majority of apps to sd like CM it has a allow move to external option.

Fast Rom

Hello guys,
My phone seems a bit slower than it was before. Opening app takes time and so on. There are 1.6GB FREE on phone storage and 15GB on internal (SD) storage available.
Any suggestions what could i do to speed it up? Tried different roms, sense and now on aosp. Phone by itself works great but when i try to open for example camera360 it lags.
There are bunch of files left of some apps, empty folders and stuff in SD card, maybe that is the case?
Any ways to speed phone up? ROM suggestions please?
LagFix (free) worked for me

Hi!
Well, I had some problems with lag in many roms!
I recommend you to use Blade Elite 1.3.1, but this is just my personal opinion!
Of course, each rom has it's own features, depending on the user. Just chek it
Remember that HTC One x is a powerful quadcore smartphone, so, lags are not so commom, maybe your kernel or something like this..
Best regards! :good:
Lag on the OneX, if it has been in use for some time, can be the result of the very poor flash controller.
Try the above mentioned LagFix (fstrim). It's on the Play Store.

Unified Storage is Officially Coming

http://www.oppoforums.com/index.php?threads/20094/
I'm quite excited for this, even though Oppo is still lagging with Jelly Bean
Since it is uncertain when Color OS 2.0 stable will be finalized, I may jump on the beta wagon and try it out.
I am running out of storage space for my apps and I only have 1 game installed.
Yeah, it's a shame to have powerful hardware, but not really be able to use it much due to the storage limitation

But u could just move your apps and games to the 22gb phone storage partion?
I did this and have 2 pages worth of games in a folder including mc5, mc4, nfs most wanted, gangstar vegas, asphalt 8, nova 3 and dead trigger 1 & 2. I've even got offline gps maps and lots of arcade games in the games folder

The color OS 2.0.2i beta only Supports Unified Storage, you will still have to use coolbird's partition tool to actually get it.
Read it here.
I was just talking about stable color os in general. I didn't realise you needed unified storage to get it. But i have been using stable jelly bean and you could move apps to phone storage as a default action. And it it's urge sane for the new kitkat update that they just brought out via manual update so i dont know why you'd want an unstable jelly bean color os Rom? The kitkat update brings alot of improvements overall as well. Although the launcher no longer comes with an app drawer. This didn't bother me as i use nova Anyway

Same for me too. I am happy with the way it is now, so long as updates and improvement keep coming. I am happy with the current launcher too.
The next COS beta will include the LVM method for unified storage
Not only the space is the issue, but that the play store is kinda buggy with this app partition way of things and it is frequently saying that you have insufficient storage available, even if you do have multiple times the space the app would need
Me too wanna use the unified on my find7, it would be a lot more easier to handle

Seriously, you can't wait for OPPO to deliver - while everyone else is getting lollipop, we still have no OTA kitcat!
Can someone please explain this "Unified storage" thing to me? I dont really understand whats the case with the storage, but I can tell it is a problem to many since there is a partition fix flying around the development threads. I just got this phone second hand about a week ago and I am still discovering the way it works.
It came on ColorOS 2.0.0i based on 4.4.2, and I'm not even sure if its official.
I have however noticed some bugs with the UI and some random and fluctuating battery drains when it feels like it, although rare and my activities haven't changed much in terms of use.
Performancewise, well it gets the job done and seems to really rock the benchmarks I throw at it, and I do see this in real time when playing Beach Buggy Racing at maximum graphics, as well as Modern Combat 5, which weren't all that smooth on my S5.
Anyways, my main concern is a thorough explanation on the current storage issue, and why its getting a "unified storage" fix included in the future.
The Oppo Find 7 was released with a weird storage layout. You can only use 3 GB for apps, and the rest of the storage is used for user data (pictures, movies, and such). The original fix was to use a method that messed with the partitions to make the partitions work as intended. That method is dangerous.
Nowadays, the preferred way is LVM. This is the case with the latest beta. Not dangerous, and it can be done within the rom

Thank you. I never noticed that since I haven't surpassed 3GB worth of app data. Well, that depends if the application package is what counts towards the 3GB and the seperate data (e.g. what is found in the obb folder) is still considered as our own user space memory as per traditional partition layout.
Why make the partition like that in the first place when we have an SD card slot?
Hopefully I don't reach the limit as I don't want to have to try the mod.
I have no idea why Oppo did it in the first place, but the Find 7 isn't the first smartphone from the company to have that limit. I always thought that unified layout was the norm since Honeycomb, but I guess not

Ive come across my share of weird phone storage issues, like the Samsung Epic 4G which by default comes BML and many roms used the modified old school MTD partition map. Then there was the LG Optimus G, which when flashing a custom non stock based rom tends to hide all of your storage contents in the data/media folder. I could keep on, but the list would not end.
Now I can't remember which of my previous phones had this same issue, and it was annoying and confusing in the beginning...

It's basically that Oppo was one of the last companies to move away from the "legacy" layout.
Google started using emulated storage with Honeycomb, but it wasn't until maybe a year after ICS that most phones moved to the "new" method. Xperia T (late 2012) was one of the last ones I remember like that.
I think that it's partly due to the fact that Windows XP is still dominant in China - Its MTP support is poor, and Chinese users apparently prefer UMS. I remember at one point (around the time the N1 was released) that someone from Oppo was asked why they used the "old" partition method and their response was "user preference". While that might make no sense to a Western user, it makes sense when your home market is China. Chinese tastes are very different from Western tastes. Of course with the Find7, Oppo kind of screwed up by using ext4 for the internal SD partition, rendering it useless for UMS + WinXP.

It makes sense. In terms of the Xiaomi Mi3W and this one including a theme store which themes beyond just the app icons, you can tell it is something designated for a non US area. Here in the US, it's mainly about high end and so on. Most of the Chinese do not complain if they're device is falling behind the rest when their phone has a Snapdragon 800 meanwhile every other phone getting the 801. As far as storage, I don't see why they would keep the outdated way as a preference when the phone includes a Micro SD card option and so on, and you get more versatility when the storage is combined as all current phones have.

OTA Kitkat is to come next monday 26.01.15 !
Google to : Find 7/7a ColorOS V2.0.5i Beta | OPPO Forums
About Lollipop, after so many complains, it seems to me urgent to wait !
Except for geeks who like to struggle with beta, it's better to wait Lollipop better version.
The only 5 feature I really miss is the recovered ability for apps to write to SD card.

Best rom for Droid inc/kernel info.

I am just wondering what the best rom would be in everyone's opinion. I am on cm10.2 unofficial 4.3.1 right now. Also was wondering the proper way to flash a kernel and make the device more capable of playing games. I.e I have mine craft and it won't even open properly...
i you havent done it yet, there is a low space mod(in the form of a flashible zip file) to flash via recovery(I use TWRP) that will increase your data partition from whatever small amount it is right now to 784 mb. it;s necessary for getting this phone to work in any shape or form in my opinion.
search around, we have talked about it on this forum to death.
as far as good roms for this phone, I had good luck with Tiny's 5-16(Kitkat 4.22 based) and Evervolv 4.0(4.44 based)
I flashed the ext4all and it got rid of the low space message, but I can't even open facebook.
The latest Facebook app is so big now, it takes up over 200 my in disk space and memory to launch. The dinc just doesn't have the ability to run it now.
The dinc is still useful as a phone and media player though.
