I just got a Kindle Fire (Running 6.3) and I was planning on rooting and flashing a custom rom. I've been reading through the forums and some of the guides/indices. It seems like there's multiple ways to root (Kindle fire utility, burrito root, super one click). And there's also two recovery options (TWRP or Clockwordmod).
So i was just wondering what is the most recommended way of rooting, and which recovery is more stable?
Also, I was also planning on installing the FireFireFire bootloader. So what order should all of this be performed in? First, root the device....then install a recovery....then install the bootloader?
First, root (if you want to stay stock, if not, it's optional), then install FFF bootloader by KFU and then TWRP by KFU. After that you'll be able to flash a custom ROM of your choice or to stay stock (BTW I would recommend MoDaCo ROM if you want a tweaked, fast and nice stock ROM, CM7 if you want the most stable Android ROM or CM9 if you are an avid tester ). That's it .

thanks for the reply! I used KFU and initially i couldn't get it to work. It wouldn't detect that my kindle was connected to the pc. I figured it was a driver issue. so i uninstalled the android adb drivers, and just reconnected the kindle, and let it install its own drivers instead of installing the ones from the KFU folder. Then i ran the program again and it worked! So now i'm rooted, have FFF bootloader, and TWRP! Right now im checking out the Energy ICS CM9 Kang rom, and its working great!
Thanks for the help!

I want to install DSP manger but that requires to be flashed in recovery. How do I get into recovery on the Kindle Fire...would the stock recovery work fine?
The app does not need root, but I need to copy some files to the system folder. I do not want to root my kindle and loose the prime stuff, I just want to install regular android apps. Someone told me, I can just pull the .apk off of my phone and side load them on to the fire.
I have been spoiled rotten with my Samsung Android phone which is extremely easy to customize and flash, so all this adb and stuff with Kindle (and other devices) is foreign to me...guess there is no Odin here....booo
Going to have to see just how much I can tolerate the stock Kindle. May get fed up with it at some pint and try customizing it, or just get an actual android tablet.

no dsp wont work with just the apk there are some lib's and other files needed.. you will need twrp or CWM to flash any zip... if you root and flash a recovery you can use ota root keeper to switch from root to not root so prime will work

can u flash the recovery with out root?
I read about the ota root keepr, but saw many post and comments that it won't work or only partially works on the newest software 6.3. Like the lending library doesn't work, but the rest does,,,etc.
I am looking at the Kindle fire utility fourm, but people are still reporting issues.
Not sure what I want to do yet...this device is not as easy as my Samsung Galaxy S device is...
EDIT: I wonder if there is a app that's like DSP Manger, but doesn't require root or to be flashed in recvery...
as funny as it sounds, it is possible to install recovery and bootloader without root. and make a backup, flash whatever u want, and still not have root.

Think of twrp as cwm.....same deal....I've been permanently rooted flashing all my ROMs just like I do with cwm, only difference in the touch aspect of the UI. The YouTube link had me rooted and on ICS in 15mins......

Thanks that clears alot of confusion. It does not include flashing TWRP but it links to another video on that. Quick question do some ROMS require FFF and TWRP?

No and yes, you need to flash a custom recovery no matter what, some devices use twrp, some cwm, some ROMs require twrp some cwm. So I'm on twrp and jandycane 4.1.1 its exactly what your looking for.

I can confirm for sure that it does work.
A little background first: I got my Kindle Fire HD recently and it was on version 8.4.1. I managed to root it fine using the Bin4ry root v30 method (Recent guide - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2337634)
I was then updated to 8.4.3 via an OTA update, so I had to root again using the same Bin4ry v30 method.
After that I waited and read the forums daily to see if anyone had managed to successfully install the second bootloader and TWRP on 8.4.3. Eventually I saw a post from the user: GenghisKhan67 kind of mentioning that he'd done it, but without much further detail. Soon after that I worked up the courage to try it myself. Then came the easy part...
I simply followed hashcode's original thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2128175 ) WORD FOR WORD, including the essential step 4.5. Along the way I made sure every file I downloaded had the correct md5 checksum (I just downloaded some md5 checker I found on Google). And I had previously backed up my Kindle's stock rom using KFFirstAide, but essentially it was the same process as in step one of hashcode's tutorial.
Basically, it worked as it was supposed to without any issues. I successfully got the blue logo. I had the cm 10.1 rom downloaded as a zip file onto my kindle, I booted into TWRP by holding the power and volume up buttons while the kindle was booting. I did all the required wiping via TWRP. Then in TWRP, I clicked the install button, selected the cm 10.1 zip file that was already on my kindle and it installed just fine. I rebooted into the custom rom.
After a short time though, I found that the custom rom had a few bugs and didn't work with every app. (Some games didn't work. Camera didn't work.) so I restored my original stock rom via KFFirstAide using the backup I had already made on there.
I did run into a slight problem when restoring my original rom though. The Kindle was no longer recognized as an adb device on my laptop. To fix that I simply uninstalled and reinstalled the official Kindle Fire adb driver and it worked fine.

I need some help peeps! I've been trying for days now but cannot get any tools to work. I have rooted my device and now need to install the rom, but i have tried KFfirstaide but when i run an option it cannot find the files it needs and also cannot mkdir! I have set the Path up so cant be that. The driver is ADB one not composite.
What other ways are there to install cm10.1?
Ideally id like to keep it as easy as poss, I did try installing the Clockworkmod rom manager from google play but couldnt get that to work as it couldnt install a recovery mode, also tried TWRP but that was worse it wouldn't load.
Does it all have to be done via command line? I did find pages where they show Clockworkmod and thats it.
By the way i have 7.4.6 on the device, also when using fastboot whats it supposed to do? I get the fastboot logo but thats all, is that it or is that not right? Also I can get into the system recovery screen but i only get 2 options, reebot and factory reset. Also When do u need a different cable? I only have the one that came with my device, is that ok? Its just i read that not all khd7's need the fastboot cable. Im really getting confused as i read that i could do a cm10 install with just 2 apps. CWM rom man & google play.
Is there a guide for the 7.4.6 version?
Thanks
JK
I don't know how you haven't hard bricked your device yet trying to flash recoveries like cwm, but you are on the kfhd 7" model. It has 2 methods of installing a custom ROM, you either use fire flash or has codes original method, I prefer fire flash because it involves less typing on my part, but if you forget to check off a certain box it will result in a red screen of death upon boot and you will need a fastboot cable to fix. Lemme get the link for flashing...
Edit: here's the link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2271909
One last note, make sure to copy the ROM you want to flash and gapps to the sdcard before you flash the 2nd boot loader and twrp or you will get stuck in a recovery boot loop thanks to Amazon's anti flashing measures. That was added kinda recently so the tutorials I don't think mention this.

A ROM for those who want to return their device to stock without replacing FireFireFire and their custom recovery. One possible reason for a switch is that on some non-stock roms, Kindle for Tablets can't sync to the store.
***IMPORTANT NOTICES***
**PLEASE RUN "FIX PERMISSIONS" (IN TWRP UNDER "ADVANCED" TAB, I'VE NEVER USED CWM, SO I"M NOT SURE WHERE IT IS THERE)**
**ALPHA STATE ROMS, TESTING IS INADEQUATE (PLEASE DEBUG), BRICKING IS A POSSIBILITY, YOU ARE WARNED**
What it is-
*A truly stock from, apart from SU and Superuser.
*Based on Kindle Fire 6.3.1 and 6.3.2 system Sofrware/Android 2.3.4
*For the First Gen Only
What it isn't-
*Modaco
*Amazon's default 6.3.2 ROM, which isn't rooted and replaces the recovery and FFF boot loader.
What is included-
*SU
*Superuser.
*As it is stock, a PC/adb will treat it like a standard KF
*Basic Unix Utilities (DD Etc.) on the 6.3.2
What isn't included
*Everything else, including a custom launcher and the play store (fear not, you can install them yourself.)

Had Twrp 2.2.2.1 and FFF 1.4a installed
Downloaded your Otter-Stock-ROM.zip, verified, md5:74669b2d85d7e5f32e392ebf1d600edf, installed in twrp, rebooted.
Installed root checker, and root browser, both have failed to get root access.
Wiped everything in TWRP and reinstalled same thing, no superuser.
Install script looks good, at a glance, but must be missing something...
rooted with Saferoot, now superuser is installed, and working.
Everything else looks good, but did not sign in to amazon.
Edit: did not try signing in to Amazon

Found the problem, I left out the Superuser app. It should be rooted, but I left out the root management app. I'll fix this. I'll look into the amazon account problem as well.
