Menu button in games? - HTC One X

Will this "issue" eventually be fixed? The menu button that takes up some of the screen in games doesn't even work, as most games already have their own menu button somewhere in the game.

I hope so because its damn annoying!

the more reason you need to unlock your phone
most apps are not really compatible to One X at the moment coz they are the first device released to have such configuration in ICS - capacitive buttons for back, home, recent apps (and no physical menu buttons)
it's really the apps' devs responsibility to update their applications more than HTC needed it

Good to know. I'm sure devs will update their apps even quicker when the USA One x comes out.

[Q] How to capture screenshot on my Defy?

Hi guys. I have Defy with no root and original 2.2.2 deblur CEE ROM. I've read on multiple sites that Froyo added function of taking screenshots on your phone without any need to install SDKs on your PC + USB debugging etc.
However I'm not able to do that on my Defy (pushing Back button + Home button or any other possible combinations to take a screenshot in png/jpg). All apps I found on the Market need a root.
Am I doing something wrong? Is there any simple way (no root, no installing SDKs, connecting with PC) to take screenshot of any app on my Defy anytime, anywhere? Even my old HTC Diamond 2 with 6.1 Windows could do that with some app.
Thank you.
you have to root and install a app (like shootme) or install cm7!
Yeah, unfortunately there's no way. I find it very disappointing that Android still doesn't have a default option to take pictures.
But, if you don't want to root, use the SDK. It's pretty simple and fast.
On LG phones they have a feature where you can touch the home button and then quickly press the power button and it saves the screen to /sdcard/CapturedImages
But this doesn't work on the Defy unfortunately, at least not for me.
Are there any non-root apps for screenshots?
There is an app in the market called No root screenshot it but its a paid version

[Q] Is your multitasking button less responsive than the Home/Back buttons?

After using the phone for a few days I've noticed that the Multitasking button has a noticeable delay between when I touch it and when the phone vibrates/button lights up to confirm the touch.
When the Back or Home buttons are pressed, the vibration and visual feedback are instant (feels like capacitive buttons on the previous Nexus phones, for example). However, this is not the case with the multitasking button- it takes about half a second to respond. This is starting to get a bit annoying, as one would expect all three navigation buttons to respond in the same manner.
Is anyone else experiencing this?
yeah I noticed a little delay when pressing the multitasking button. I suppose it has something to do with the phone accessing the memory and presenting all the applications as there is little to no delay after swiping away most of the windows leaving just a few.
Yup, I've noticed it too.
Yup. Big donation to whoever is first to sort this bastard.
Yeah, as others said, it's probably quite a resource intensive task to "screenshot" (although I'm sure it's cleverer than that) all the currently running activities and build the menu.
As for a fix- I guess they could have a background service running that keeps a cache of the active apps preview. Then it could be displayed much more quickly. I guess the downside is the previews could be slightly out of date depending on how often it polls, but that may be better for some folk.
very very slow.
I prefer the long press home for recent apps that Gingerbread had.
Also, swiping the apps off the screen doesn't mean it closed the apps, I think its all aesthetic.

It works for some but not others (ones with background data).
I would prefer if Google kept their word on consistency and allow us to force close through it with a dialog or something.
Anyone who wasn't aware of the fine print would think the app is closed completely.

I agree that this is probably why, but as a programmer/UI designer myself, I know that timely feedback is extremely important in user experience. The button should respond immediately, and then delay if necessary while loading the list of apps. It could even show a progress bar/spinner if it had to... but not responding to touch immediately is a major user experience issue. Sometimes I've pressed it multiple times because I thought it didn't get my touch on the screen.
Can anyone comment on whether the recent ICS updates (4.0.2 or 4.0.3) have addressed this? I'm still on 4.0.1.

That's good to hear! I was starting to think I was the only one experiencing this...
I've noticed also that (with 4.0.1 and 4.0.2, with 4.0.3 i don't know) the "circle" effect when you touch virtual button is pretty laggy when you are in the homescreen, but if you touch the virtual buttons when you are into an application (people, calendar, calculator, or 3rd party apps) the circle effect is really smooth.
Why??
Fixed in 4.0.3 ??

Let's start to email devs for their apps to comply with ICS phones!!!

Current Problems:
1. Menu bar at the bottom of the screen.
2. Not compatible when seen on google play (due to screen resolution, etc.)
3. Games able to installed properly but cannot download the required games data.
At least for paid apps, let's try to let them know to at least consider fixing it on their next release. We cannot complain much for free apps but still we can feedback to them.
I've already emailed some of them:
1. Dolphin HD - due to menu bar, and oh well I paid for their license last time
2. Asphalt 6 - not compatible when seen on google play, considering HTC One X is still considered a phone(and not tablet), screen resolution should not be their excuse here. If it 's working on my Sony Arc I'm expecting it should work on my other phone also.
3. NFS Shift - Able to install but cannot download data either on wifi or 3g
Will do some more emailing later.
Bump for good update on dolphin browser. Had only checked their blog awhile ago and their beta 8.0 is out since 6-April, menu bar is gone. Could be because of my feedback or someone else's, either way it's good for all of us dolphin users.
http://dolphin-browser.com/blog/
Will install it when I get home.
Sent from my Sony Arc w/ ICS
EDIT: had it installed just now and still got the menu bar at the bottom of screen
But at least they are looking into it. Below is their reply to me last time.
Hi, thank you for your information.
I have already directed your issue to relevant team members for review, and we will run a test about your issue. Once we figure it out, we will fix the issue as soon as possible. Please stay tuned.
Very good point.
I really do think ICS is the best Android version yet, has it's own real sense of identity and a crisper interface.
It's the step towards a common feel among different devices.
But the install base of Gingerbread remains the highest at 67% so us guys on here will probably be running Jelly Bean before they catch up.
Give it a few years and Google will probably get more aggressive about it.
There are even some google apps that need updating, like googles. Man they really should have kept the menu button, the four-button layout works perfect with the DHD.
Best is to mail the android team asking for a better backward compatibility solution for hard button devices. Or asking HTC to create a temporary solution. Ridiculous decision by the Android team. They try to enforce a new guideline by making the user experience horrible for non compatible apps. Never saw that on any platform.
I went to the Tapatalk forums to ask for the ICS menu already let's hope more dev's comply with ICS.
Sent from my Quad Monster HTC One X with Tapatalk beta 6
So I've emailed some more devs stating the current issue of menu bar on our HTC One X.
1. Kobo reader
2. Mixzing music player
3. FPSE ps-one emulator
4. Air attack HD
5. Fruit Ninja
6. XDA app
7. Yahoo Messenger and Mail app
8. Skype
So far they immediately replied stating that a representative will follow-up on the issue.
Hopefully they can provide a fix on their next update.
I also sent a mail to whatsapp. Awaiting response

I will try to help too - I know it doesn't really belong here but I sincerely don't understand Google why they removed the menu button and added the useless multitask button (long-press home was fine?!). I thought it was pretty nice to have true full screen apps all the time and hide the menu completely. Ah well, Googles logic is beyond me and I will have to see the updated apps first...
The legacy menu button also make touch control on non ics games annoying to use as it messes up the calibration, probably due to the resizing of the screen.
A better solution would be to make the menu button hidable, and rather than wait for every dev to update their app for ics which is not feasible.
Hopefully HTC manages to solve this problem and comes up with a good update.

Games are not fullscreen

Why when playing games do you loose so much screen to the black area at the bottom of the screen, near the buttons? Seems such a shame to have a great display that is not all used for game playing.
Just because tgere not optimised yet shudnt be to long
Mod or Die
Is that all it is? That's good news, thankyou for you answer! Do games from the Play Store automaticaly update by knowing what phone you have?
already fix'd by a dev: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1582506
this should remapp the multitask key to be the menu button.. means ICS is not showing it anymore in games, or where ever it's needed.
almost as in gingerbread xP
So, is this that games are not optimised for the One X as mention above or is this a software design issue. Lastly, I do not want to have to root my phone yet and would like to stay stock for now, so is there any other way around it?
then no..
i think games that are optimized for ICS don't have the button. but games wich need one, and are not optimized for ICS do have it.
and some developers are lazy, so it will use some time till they optimize it.
it's an ICS problem, and not a tegra3 problem, cause ICS is made for phones without hardware buttons, but still HTC decided to go with them.. they should have made a hardware menu button then..
that's an ICS thingy , just cause the one x doesn't have a menu button , menu button has to appear in the screen.
if your device is rooted , u can get a mod that'll remap the task button for menu
long holding home button for tasks which will remove the annoying menu button from the screen
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24539809&postcount=48
and it's flashable through recovery
For those still not willing to root, it's still a good idea to feedback/email the particular app's developer so that they will look into the issue and let's hope they will provide a fix on their future releases.
I have done a lot of emailing(for some of my current apps) and almost all of them replied saying they will have a look into it. At least that's a positive response.
But unlike many of you, I'm impatient so in the end I unlocked my phone and rooted. Menu bar is now only a thing of the past for me. It really feels good to have that full screen real-estate.
For those still undecided to unlock/root, giving feedback/email to the devs is important. Sooner or later they would probably provide a fix.

FAQ frequently asked questions

I'm posting this mostly for informational purposes to try and stop the same question being asked a billion times like some questions have been. ill try to keep this up to date as much as I can if I see questions getting asked repeatedly
Q: why should u root my g note 2?
A: wireless tethering works now, also: 5 words: every app in multi window. you can have every app in multi window action with a deodexed Rom and you can back up every app with titanium backup.
Q: how do I root my phone
A: I'm not going to go into this since there are many options, ways and since it changes so rapidly. look in the android development section of our phone's forum for the best option for you. Just do an in-forum search for root.
Q:What is the difference between the firmwares/what does all this talk about LJ1/LJC/LK8/MA5/MA7/MC2 mean?
A: different firmware names are usually associated with updates to the stock system files. they are named after the modem (or radio software) and usually bring improvements or changes to the phone capabilities or bugs. there is usually different root methods for different firmware. this phone came stock with LJ1, got updated to LJC soon after to include multi-window and extended toggles support, and recently (as of the last time this post was edited) we got a leak of LK8 which brings minor stability and Bluetooth fixes. MA5's leak was a bit useless as nothing seemed to change. MA7 brought 4.2 and "Google wallet support" more on why it's in quotes in the wallet question. MC2 was supposed top bring bug fixes for many things including wallet but most can agree the wallet problem persists.
Q:My Wi-Fi turns on sporadically. how do I fix it?
A: Turn off connection optimizer under settings-wireless networks-more settings-mobile networks-connections optimizer
Q: How do I unlock the bootloader?
A: No need, only the Verizon one comes locked
Q: How do I draw on pictures?
A: In gallery go into the picture itself then press the menu button then tap on draw on image this flips over the image and you can draw on the back. for the front see the next question
Q: How do I draw on any app like in the commercial?
A: take a screenshot WITH THE PEN by holding the pen button and the screen for a few seconds it will take you to the screenshot to draw on it
Q: Is there any way to wireless tether?
A: now there is! go to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1988735 and install that apk. it works with lj1 and ljc and on rooted and with busybox
Q: How do I get music controls on the lock screen?
A: you can't get them directly on the stock lock screen if you're not using security (it works with pin, patter, etc but not swipe), but it will let you pull down the notification bar to use the music controls that show up there. if you REALLY want it directly in the lock screen you'll need a lock screen replacement app that allows it
Q: My pen touches when coming into hovering range/it's too hard to click with it
A: there is two ways to fix this.
1. the crude more dangerous way is to smack it on a hard surface until it works for you (which I don't recommend)
2. the second is to adjust the potentiometer on the pen. pop the button off the pen and turn the screw closest to the tip clockwise for pens that touch while hovering and counterclockwise for pens that are too hard to tap with. trust me this is really easy.
Q: How do I turn on/off 4g? my old phone had a notification bar toggle!
A: go to "settings-wireless networks-more settings-mobile networks-network mode" and select "cdma" to turn off 4g, or select "cdma/lte" for 4g on
Q: does s-beam work with non-samsung phones that have nfc?
A: partially. if the file is small enough it will go through if not it takes the receiving device to a broken pay store link
Q: does Google wallet work?/why doesn't Google wallet work?
A: it's not officially supported before MA7 , but you can enable it, follow these instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2037416. After MA7 it's supposed to work naively without hacking but a lot of people especially those rooted it's been nothing but pain. try using it straight from the market and if it doesn't work seek individualized support from the q&a section
Q: no flash on jelly bean?
A: YouTube and most up to date websites are updating to html5. if you still find websites that tell you you're not good enough for not having flash then download it from blapkmarket.com or aptoide
Q: How do I take screenshots?
A: there are three ways with this phone:
1. with the pen: hold the pen's button and the screen for about 3 seconds. only this one takes you straight to drawing on it.
2. with the buttons: hold the home and power button together for about 3 seconds.
3. with the touch screen: swipe your entire palm from left to right on the screen, like you're cleaning all of it off. it's a bit tricky but play around with it you'll get it right every time with practice. *this one needs to be enabled under motion settings*
Q: why does my phone get so hot while charging?
A: the phone will get hotter while charging on low battery from the stock charger because it will try to take as much current as it can and the stock charger can provide 2 amps other charges don't give as much power to the phone so it won't be as hot. but don't worry, the phone itself monitors the battery's temperature and will shut off completely if it gets too hot for its own (or your) safety.
Q: How do I root the latest update/update if I'm root?
A:LK8/MA5/MA7/MC2 needs stock firmware to update as of the last time this post was edited.
Q: how do I get more apps on multi window?
A: get on the latest deodexed Rom by getting a custom recovery then flash this mod (which works in MC2 even though it didn't say so) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1982452 which initially dumps every app into multi window.
Q: How do i get pop up browser (or another browser) back?
A: go to settings> applications and select the browser that had the default url handling and clear it's defaults, once you do that you should get asked which browser you want every time
Q: How do I skip music tracks/pause without turning on my phone?
A: while you can't just hold the volume buttons like in other phones the end call button on the stock headphones can pause and skip tracks. just click I once to pause, twice rapidly to skip
Q: can i use my mhl adapter and usb otg at the same time?
A: not with simple accessories, but there are ways around this.
1. the dock can do this (but it's always out of stock)
2. use Bluetooth: set up your mhl adapter and have Bluetooth peripherals like ps3 controllers, mice and keyboards.
3. use the Wi-Fi to your advantage: set up your usb otg and stream with allshare, set up an ftp from your phone. or set up your mhl adapter and access your computer files through wifi ftp
4. you can get it done with some tricky wiring, soldering and maybe a bit of cunning. but if you are someone who could get this done with instructions you won't need instructions to figure it out. all you need to know is USB otg pin out that mhl needs power to the phone and the adapter and that diodes and resistors make your apparatus too heavy and ugly and you might as well just buy a dock
Q: how do I change what the physical buttons do?
A:to change the back and menu keys just change it's value on /system/usr/keylayout/generic.kl back is 158 menu is 139. to edit what the hard press buttons do you have to change them BOTH IN GENERIC.KL AND GPIO-KEYS.KL or else your phone will freeze every time you press these, home is 172 in both files, volume down is 114 in both files, volume up is 115 in both files and power is 116 in both files.
I found this specially useful in combination with the soft keys below to make home button a native search button
Q: How do I enable soft keys and/or disable hard and capacitance keys?
A: simple tweak:
to add soft (in the screen) keys follow this:

I have the AT&T version, but I doubt it's different in this regard... For the lock screen music controls, they do appear at the top if you use a lock screen other than swipe or tilt. When you use Pattern or PIN, it shows the music controls, but you lose the quick app links. To get both (not at the same time though), you can select Pattern or PIN with swipe gesture. It will show the swipe lock screen with apps at the bottom, then when you swipe the screen it will show your pattern or PIN and the music controls at the top. I've had to resort to using the Pattern unlock just so I can get music controls
Interesting post. Thanks a lot
