EVO 4g or the first 4g Evo - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My buddy just bought a EVO but it doesn't look anything like the first EVO I had. Is there a way to confirm in the settings menu, what type of phone he has?
Also, if his is an EVO 4g, am I in the right forum? And wasn't this forum originally for the first EVO 4g? How do I know what root method to apply?

There's all different kinds of EVO's like like Evo 4g, evo shift, evo 3d, ect
go to menu > settings > about phone
you'll see your model number there, if for whatever reason you can't find it there just go to google images and type in evo and all the different evo phones will pop up and find the one that matches...
as far as rooting goes you need to see what firmware you're using, if he just got it chances are that the firmware needs to be downgraded
before root.. but if it is the OG evo this is the right forum
beautiful day out here in AZ huh? My corporate office is on PV lol

maybe it's the evo design 4g???... but best thing is to follow evol4g's advice...

Thinking of ditching Nexus One and getting an Epic 4G or Evo 4G

I am, as the subject says, thinking of ditching TMo and my N1 and going back to Sprint and getting either an Epic 4G or an Evo 4G.
I'm curious as to the differences between the N1 and Epic/Evo where custom roms are concerned. On my N1, it's so easy to switch back and forth between custom roms via recovery, especially with Clockwork. I just tell it to backup the current rom and install the new one, and five minutes later, I'm up and running. Are things this easy with the Epic and Evo as well?
Any other insights you all could provide would be greatly appreciated.
I can't speak for the EVO but the Epic is sweet. This phone is my very first smartphone...I used to have a razr not but 2 months ago. So I've never changed roms and what not but the Epic is super easy...pretty much what you described. I back up in cwm and install the new rom and that's it new rom is working. 2 weeks after I got the phone I was playing with roms.
with cm7 i see no advantages the evo has over the epic, it used to be they had better software, but in no time we shall have better hardware + the roms .

I can't wait for cm7...my buddy has gingerbread on his N1 and it's awesome, can't wait to have it on the epic.
They are both just as easy. Epic has clockwork and the evo has clockwork or amon RA recovery. Evo is a little harder to root cause of the security on the nand partition. Its still easy though. Once rooted flashing roms are all the same on android phones.

Good to know, I wan't sure how others differed since the N1 was designed from the begging to be mostly open and easy to root.
Now to decide, humongous LCD, or pretty large Super AMOLED.
Another question, something I've never totally grasped is the internal storage of Android phones.
If I understand correctly, the Evo has twice the storage of the N1, and the Epic has even more yet. The Epic specs I've seen say 8-16GB. First, which one is it, 8 or 16, and is this system and app. Am I to understand that I'd have at least 8GB available for the system and apps? That would totally awesome, no more A2SD, wouldn't need it.
I'd imagine that running CM7 on the Evo would leave a lot of space available since it doesn't have all that Sense bloat on it.
That is SD card that it comes with. The epic comes with.a 16 gb card and the evo comes with an 8 TB card. As far as internal memory they are about the same. After the phone is booted and before any apps are installed the epic has about 400 mbs of storage left. About tue same for evo so apps2sd might still be needed. You can.always buy another SD card for either phone. I have the epic and my wife has the evo so I get to play with both of them.

I have a 32gb card now, so I'm covered if I do have to use a2sd. Just hoping I didn't have to do that.

I'm wanting to take advantage of the $125 ETF credit Sprint is offering, I have till April 14th for that though, so I'll wait and see what come from CTIA. I figure between the $125, and the at least $250 I could get for my Nexus, I'll come out pretty good money wise.
I really like Sprints Any Mobile Any Time, since 95% of my calls are to mobile phones, I can get the smallest package and save some money. I'll get it at Best Buy too so I don't have to worry about any mail in's and get the Black Tie protection as well. Had the Black Tie when I had a Palm Pre, dropped the phone four days after I got it and broke the screen, hand a new Pre a week later no questions asked. Best insurance out there IMO.
get the evo.
i had the evo, got the epic, miss the evo. epics hardware may be better, but at this point n time there is a lot more roms to play and have a good time with on the evo. the miui rom for the evo right now is very stable and LOTS of fun.
So I'm glad I decided to wait until after CTIA to get a phone. I've been seeing reports on Engadget, Gizmodo, and Android Central about a bad-ass phone coming out on Sprint. I just hope the phone comes about before the middle of April.
If you do get an epic, look into the bonsai rom, It rocks. Also when you flash the evo, there's a chance of permabricking the 4g if you don't backup the rsa keys right. I'd recommend either the epic 4g or nexus s 4g if you're going to wait for the new releases

alot of epic and evo owners have had issues with a 30 day turn around with the black tie from best buy. since sprint changed their insurance policies to include physical damage with no deductible, i think it is better. they basicaly dont even jack with repair for the most part. they just switch it out on the spot for you.
From the research I did a few months ago when I got my tax return (it's awesome being a single parent, lol) I spent at least 3 weeks researching the Evo, Slide, and the Epic. Since I was coming from an HTC Hero, the Slide was automatically thrown off the list because it did not have a 1GHz processor. I hear it isn't much of a difference between the Evo and the slide (just the speed of the phone) but one thing I wanted going into a new phone is a 1ghz processor and nothing less.
So after all the research was done and it was time to make the decision, it came down to this:
EVO has an FM Tuner, huge screen, very nice widgets (HTC Sense), and huge buttons on the screen
Epic has a keyboard (HUGE plus for me), touchwiz 3 (I love it, so clean and simple), and almost the same size as the Evo. It sucks it doesn't have the FM tuner but I was only going to use it for Baseball games (I just bought the app instead).
The only major things I saw different between the two was the interface, keyboard, and the screen itself. If you put an Evo next to an Epic, the screen on the Evo looked dull.
Final Virdict: If you want a keyboard and are going to root, the Epic is the way to go. If you just watch touch screen or just don't care and AREN'T going to root, then the Evo is the right one. Samsung blows at updating their software.

I didn't realize Sprint had changed their insurance and deductibles. When I left Sprint a little over a year ago, they had $100 ded. for smart phones and no guarantee that you'd get the same model phone back and if water damage, sorry your screwed. Do they cover basic water damage as well now, such as the quick dunk in water? When I had black tie, it was physical and minor water damage for $10/month.

Coming From The Evo...........

Well I sold my Evo yesterday with the hopes of purchasing an Epic 4G thursday morning........Any reason not to??? Should i go back to the Evo, or grab an Evo Shift???? The best roms? Easiest rooting guide? Just wanting to make sure im making a good decision....................

I love this phone, have played with friends shifts and they feel flimsy on my opinion, I rooted using the method detailed in the syndicate frozen rom in development section and then flashed that rom with no problem however you should try to find the most reliable update version to eb13 as some people have been experiencing problems with it however the only problem I have experienced on "stock" eb13 is the screen rotation lag. I used the zip method from samsung when they had the download available but they pulled it. Im sure theres a good copy of that file here on the forums somewhere... Anyways back to what you were probably asking, yes I would choose this phone again over a shift or any other phone available through sprint especially if you are comfortable rooting and flashing.

I was a previous evo owner. I switched because I dropped my evo and broke it and had no insurance. For some reason the epic was selling cheaper on ebay so decided to go with it. I gotta say overall the experience was great with both phones. I gotta give the edge to the evo as far as development but that's it. The devs on epic forums do a fantastic job with what they have which is froyo sources that are buggy as hell but I have no complaints.
Btw the screen on the epic is so much more vibrant I love it. Syndicate and bonsai seem to be most popular roms. From experence both are stable but I prefer bonsai because those devs make upgrading so easy no wipe required.
Check stickies in development rooting is just a click away.

If you do in fact go with the evo and want to upgrade it to 2.2 right away (like i did) here is the method I used
Just download step #1, than go straight to #11 it is very easy and I have no problems whatsoever with it although they say there is risk involved...
Also, a good root for EXT4 is Here
And the Rom i run now (super fast)
I totally miss my evo just due to the number of different roms on them. Miui rom is so leet and its really stable now especiallly
Cm7 is in alpha, epic has a mostly stable MIUI rom now, and good devs from ACS, Team Viper, PTFMedic (forgive me if that was wrong) just to name a few.

I traded my evo for an epic, quadrant scores mean nothing unless you play games on phones which I dont, the only reason I traded was because I got bored with hacking the hell out of the evo, I personally think samsung phones are garbage compared to htc and I would take the evo back in a second.
I thing the epic devs are awesome and do a great job, but there are alot more options with the evo as far as developement goes. Is the epic faster? Hell yes, but so what.

Krazy I just got my epic on the weekend and now might be regreting because of the development but cm7 is here and cooking. Either way the epic is sick ashell but the development on the evo is a slaughter house for the epic. So much for my evo killer but wil get there sooner or later
Bought an Epic to play with back in Nov. and hated it. Loved the hardware though.
Gun Bros pushed me over the edge, combined with Sprint taking my yearly upgrade.
The Evo can't hold out until October. I'm hoping the Epic I swapped my Asurion replacement for can.
I'll miss dev support and cm7 for now, I need my phone to work, what I see epic support has come a long way, my main gripe back in November, I'm excited about the swap.
Honestly though the decision would've been harder if my Asurion replacement wasn't dinged around the camera and didn't have a purple hue in it's hd v2 screen.
Enough if my insomniacal babbling.
I have an epic and my wife an evo. Yes there are alot more developers on the evo I still love my epic. Its faster, better screen and better gpu.

So I've had the epic 4g for about a day and a half and I think I'm in love.....I don't miss the evo at all minus the development and various roms but I'm in love with the keyboard, vibrant screen, and the large speed improvement......I had to get use to the feel of the device and getting use to using the touch sensitive buttons more accurately......other than that I'm not having any issues or bugs........holding out until the official froyo upgrade comes out to root and flash a custom rom.......thx for the advice guys.......

[Q] Who's not going 3d?

I kinda find it funny in a way that people were doggin the evo and bragging about the Evo 3d.
So now that you know the Evo 3d is locked down. Who is sticking to the Evo?

My upgrade eligibility isn't until like october or november, so I'll just have to see how the evo 3d scene is looking by then. I'm 99% sure I'm getting a new phone, I just hope it's an HTC and not something else.
I was going to stick with the OGevo even if the 3d had a dedicated "instant root" button!
I'm hoping we see something better by axemas.
I never jumped on the 3D bandwagon because I'm entirely happy with my Evo. I know it has better hardware and other optimizations, but my Evo is fast enough. I don't experience any lag, and I see no need for more speed. While the new Sense looks nice, I don't use Sense. I'd rather be able to load super awesome roms on my current Evo than have to stay on the stock Evo 3D rom for more than a week.
Regardless of that, the more I see the 3D, the more I want it. Still not bad enough to buy it out of contract, or sell my current Evo to help pay for it.
Maybe when the Evo 4D comes out six months later, I'll get that.
(from... Evo/MIUI/Tapatalk)
Ya I'm still loving the evo still beats the newest phones sprint is gonna release. I don't see the evo 3d being a big seller now lol. So the evo will be getting a OTA I wouldn't claim sprint is gonna let it die it's there best seller.

I wouldn't say it's a fail. It might be a fail in the eyes of rooters but it'll probably be very successful if it follows the trend of the EVO.
And it probably will be rooted sooner or later. If it can be locked or course it can be unlocked.

Lol nice feel bad for the people who are stuck with it and no longer want it from pre ordering it.
I need root access, unlock, customization, variety, the need to flash every few days. Sticking with the OGevo for now. I do have hope that it will be unlocked but till then, Ill stick with flashing in between the Kingdom Rom and CM7..
No root, No EVO 3D. I qualify for an upgrade next week but I'll wait for something that can be rooted. The whole 3D thing isn't my cup o' tea anyway.
I see no benefits of the 3D over the 4G.
I mean honestly, 3D screen? That's nothing special imo.

People are only dogging Evo 4g because now there will be other options from Sprint that are at the same level or possibly a little better. But as long as Sprint hooks everyone up with Gingerbread and some of these excellent developers create some roms for it, I'll be quite fine with my original Evo. Evo 3D may be locked down and even if it wasn't, who's to say it would be any better?

[Q] What are you going to do with your OG Evo?

Now that the typical two year cycle is coming to a close for most of us Evo owners, I'm curious as to what you are going to do with it. I've thought about trading it in or selling it, but it has got to be one of my favorite gadgets/pieces of tech of all time. I don't think I'm ready to let go! Here's a few ideas I've had...
1-Wipe all the info off it, download GrooveIP, and give it to my daughter as a VOIP exclusive phone.
2-Do the same as above, but use it as a "home" phone.
3-Turn it into a media/gaming center (saw this on lifehacker the other day, great idea, here's the link: http://lifehacker.com/5915083/how-to-turn-your-android-into-an-awesome-portable-media-and-gaming-center
4-Finally figure out how to compile ROMs and test them on it.
5-Use it as a standalone GPS unit.
6-Turn it into a portable web server.
Any other ideas out there?
sell it on craigslist, and move on with good memories.
Keep it I still love my EVO and I am not ready to move on.
I stupidly traded mine in when I got my 3D. I still have all my original Sprint phones /except/ the best one ever. So I went on eBay last night and bought one, just to keep as a WiFi-only placeholder for the one that got away.

Run Deck's Reloaded and sit on my upgrade. Compared to the new phones, OUR EVO still pulls it wait. Also, no phone from Sprint has made the EVO obsolete . . . . . . . . . . yet.
I love my Evo, it does everything I need and more. I'll probably have it for another two years.
i'm just gonna keep it for now... the lte pisses me off. i would have gotten it if it wasn't for the battery. i guess i'm gonna wait til something interests me... but so far, until it breaks i'm gonna keep it
I usually post over in the Epic Touch forums as that is my main phone but recently I reclaimed my OG EVO from my ex (he bought an E4GT from me) and I had almost forgot how much I loved the phone. Don't get me wrong I seriously love my E4GT but it's nice to have my EVO back.
When I used it, before giving it to the ex, I knew nothing about rooting and so when the 3D came out I made the ultimate mistake of picking it up and getting rid of the OG EVO, a move I regretted on a daily basis. lol
Now that I have it back I want to do all the things with it I didn't before, like root, try out custom ROMs, etc. Just have to find a good starting place (okay rooting my Epic is like way simple, the root instructions I've found for the EVO seem a little confusing).
Anyway, this really is one of Sprint's best phones and now I can say I have both of Sprint's best phones.
using groove ip to turn it into a pure google voice phone
When I upgrade ill keep it and use it as a wifi media player type device. Plus Google maps is going to have maps offline so it would also make a good stand alone GPS.

I handed it off to the wifey so she can learn to use Android now instead of the Blackerry's that she has been using forever now.
I am messing around with the Epic 4G Touch now until LTE comes out and then I will get an LTE phone and the wife can have the E4GT or keep the Evo.
I've ordered my Galaxy S III already. I will either unroot / stock rom / CM7 the phone and give it to my dad. He's currently using an optimus S and hates it.

Depending on what firmware is in your ogevo is what makes it difficult or not, if your on 2.3.3 use revolutionary its really simple. If your on the latest which is 2.3.5 I believe, you have to HTC dev unlock bleh, or use tacoroot downgrade, flash the Eng boot loader, then upgrade to a 2.3.3 stock rom, then use revolutionary. Or at least that's what I did with mine. Its actually not as hard as you think if you follow the guides on the net :-D I could possibly help you if you need it, just throw me a pm

Thinking of switching to E3D...

Ok guys... What do yall think? I kinda want it because they have full working sense 4 and stuff in development. And i like the dual core proccessor. But the one thing i cant stand is the camera on it. I have seen side by side photos of it and the e4g and the evo 3d looks terrible. Like its chooses some really cold hue making the pic look blue and dark. So, what should i do?
Evo 4g or Evo 3d? oh and my upgrade isnt until next april...
Yes price is an issue. I don't have $450-$500 right now.
Why buy an e3d when you can get a 4g lte? If price is the issue, by the time your contract expires next April the price of the lte will have dropped alot and the e3d will prob be out of production (The 4g already is).
I was thnking of getting the e3d on craigslist, amazon, ebay etc. since its a fraction of the retail price.

I had a lot of issues with my e3d that always forced me back to EVO.
If you can get a good one, really cheap go for it. Make sure if you do local CL check digitizer really well to make sure it responds correctly. Went through 3 on my 3d. Otherwise, I would wait for the LTE.

I have the Evo4g and the Evo 3d. 4g is my "pda" and the 3d is my "phone.". Newts rom doesn't have 4g working, nor does it do 3D. Other than that, it's great. I need 4g to work so I use MeanRom ICS on the 3d. Everything works, 'cept it's Sense 3.6.
The 3d is a pretty fast piece of hardware.
