Hello!
I'm here because I've got a big problem with rooting my HTC Desire Z. I've tried almost all the guides on this forum (and not only) but none of these are working. I think this is because of my phone is branded to Vodafone. Can you recommend me which method should I use to root my phone? I do not want to change my ROM. I don't even want to install applications. I just want to fully access my phone's internal memory.
Some useful info below:
Serial number: SH0B8RT04837
Android version: 2.3.3
Core version: 2.6.35.10-g7b95729
Compilation number: 2.42.161.2 CL84109 release-keys
Software number: 2.42.161.2
Thanks for any help.

Yeah! Really big thanks for you guys for helping me! You're the best!
This is how I finally rooted my phone:
1. http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Desire_Z:_Firmware_Downgrade_(Gingerbread) - done all the things to step 6 and "/data/local/tmp/fre3vo -debug -start FAA90000 -end FFFFFFFF" command.
2. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178912 - made goldcard with method described here.
3. http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Desire_Z:_Firmware_Downgrade_(Gingerbread) - finished the rest of the steps and commands.
4. http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Desire_Z:_Rooting - followed this guide.
Once again - big thanks!

Not possible, you need to downgrade.

Click to collapse
Gingerbreak, from what I understand, will only provide temp root. And the code to disable S-ON does not work on HTC Gingerbread. So once you reboot, All changes are rolled back.
To install ClockworkMod Recovery its needed to downgrade, root, apply ENG/S-OFF, upgrade again (2.3 strangely does not restore S-ON), Gingerbreak (If your lucky and it works), flash recovery.
EDIT: I need to start typing quicker, ghostofcain beat me to it.
I tried Gingerbreak at first. it worked. but with a reboot all of changes vanished!
is there any way to first S-Off the phone and then use the Gingerbreak without the Downgrading... Downgrading is truely a pain in the ass!
If you have lost S-OFF (back to S-ON) then no, you will have to downgrade first.
Not helping much....
No offence but I read these forums all the time and its a bit tiring when someone asks a questions and they only get half an answer and not a very helpful one at that.
Ok so you can't root the DHD running stock 2.3.3 without downgrading first.
So how about pointing the people in need of help in the right direction then?!

Not sure if this has been said or not but:
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/how-to-root-the-htc-desire-hd/
It's as easy as "download, run" and it works brilliantly!
I suggest you just boot a Ubuntu Live CD (it's not as bad as it sounds, I actually liked it the first time I tried it and now I have it installed by my Windows) and just run the command:
wget http://droid.neolobster.com/roms/aahk-25102011.zip && unzip aahk-25102011.zip && sudo ./hack-ace.sh

in terminal, press "1" and be afk for 5 mins.
Doesn't erase your data, doesn't format your phone, doesn't downgrade your Android OS. It...it just works!
Good luck with it

Hello! I have spent the last 2 days reading and searching for threads with the same problem that I have. Unprosperous, I desperately hope that you guys can help me, because I am really stuck. Now to the problem..
Basically, as you may already have understood, I am totally stuck in HBOOT-mode. There is no way I can navigate my way through the different menues. None of the buttons won't react. It is the same problem as this guy has:
The phone is a rooted HTC Desire, temporary running CyanogenMod, Gingerbread 2.3. Do you know, or do you think you know how to solve this problem, please let me know. Thanks in advance!
Anyone? Feeling insanely desperate. However, I'm also very grateful for all the help I can get.
Someone in the thread you linked said that he solved the problem, maybe try messaging him?

Uhm.. I'm not sure I got that right. Which one of your threads do you want me to read? Sorry, but I'm a total n00b at this. That's why I'm asking for help. Though, I think I've heard about that "PB99IMG"-method before, where you have to put the .zip file in the root of your SDcard, or something like that (?). The main problem is, I'm not sure how to go through with it myself.
I appreciate the help!
I'm willing to help, but you have to get the basics..
It's a complete guide on how to unroot. Click on my userid to go to my profile->Click->Statistics->Threads started by->"How to unroot..."
Droidzone, I just read your guide. It was very detailed and easy to understand, good job!
So, I should just follow the steps and unroot my phone? I'm not sure if I have to make myself a goldcard, because when i first rooted my phone, i managed it without making one. But im considering to make one anyway, just to be on the safe side.

You should definitely make a gold card. It is the difference between bricking a device and having to return it, and restoring it to a perfectly working form. It hardly takes 15 mins to make, and you can even make one of your existing card, save all the intermediate files safely and use that card as a non-goldcard too (though not recommended). All you need is the CID of your sdcard, and once you save it as a text file, you can make a goldcard any time you need without a phone. But for safety reasons it is best to check that a goldcard works by actually following the procedure to the end.
I made the guide when as a newcomer to the forum, I almost bricked the device. Lack of a goldcard was what my issue unsolveable..
Now, every time I visit the Q/A section (which is infrequent now), I see at least 10 recent posts which can be solved by my guide alone.. Someone ought to sticky it
There is one step that says I have to put the PB99IMG.zip into the root of my goldcard. I don't understand, how do I do that?
You dont know how to copy a file to sdcard??
Oh.. So you just have to copy the file to the SDcard?
Yup.................
Nevermind, then..
EDIT: I'm stuck on the Goldcard. Can't get the CID. It won't find it..

No, S-ON.
Formatted the SDcard, moved the PB99IMG.zip into it and booted the phone. I got much further than I did before. However, it has been remained stuck on the white screen for about 10 minutes. It says..
"Parsing ... [SD zip]
[1] Bootloader
[2] Radio V2
[3] Radio_Cust
[4] Boot
[5] Recovery
[6] System
[7] User Data
[8] Splash1
[9] Splash2 "
Am I doing something wrong?
Any thoughts on what I should do next?

ok, first the Hack Kit download is borked..your antivirus has eaten zergrush and then it can not gain temp root. Disable the AV, firewalls, and all the other stuff related to protection you have and re download the kit. Make sure that in the tools>bin folder the file zergrush exists.
Moreover, or your sdcard is bad or you have not set your phone as charge only by default...it has permission denied...
Fix that and it will work flawlessly....:good:

I'm currently rooted via the HTC Dev. method which obviously means I'm S-ON. I keep having to flash the boot image of the ROM every time I restart/reboot the phone which is really annoying. So I want to go the whole 9 yards and obtain S-OFF status. I read the comprehensive thread on the matter and I'm a little confused and quite apprehensive about attempting it. Is there a newer or more updated method out there? Here's some info on my phone:
HTC Dev unlocked with S-ON
HBOOT-0.98.0000
ROM: MIUI.us_vivow_1.12.30
