When I connect my USB cable to my computer, what causes the kindle fire to automatically mount the /sdcard as the mass storage device?
I would rather it not auto mount and instead wait for me to tell it to mount for PC usage.
Is this controlled by the Kernel? I have the stock 6.3 OS, rooted, with the stock Kernel.
This is just something it does. You can always click disconnect . With custom ROMS it dosent do that, at least not the ROMS I tested out. You could always install a custom rom .

Then how did the person who made the custom ROM get it to stop doing that?
I disagree. This isn't just something that it does. If you click disconnect without safely removing from your system the FAT32 file system will eat itself. It is a pain in the ass to have to disconnect it from the computer, then hit disconnect on the screen when all I want is to charge my phone or use ADB to check something.
It could be the kernel. It could be something as simple as a config file or an APK that needs to be disabled. I've looked around but I can't find it. It makes me think it is in the kernel or maybe in the framework?
Because custom ROMS have different kernels than stock, sir. This is just something that the Amazon kindle fire does. If you have a problem with this, you can go on a rampage deleting system files and settings, send a report to Amazon themselves, or flash a custom rom other than MoDaCo, add it uses stock UI

UPDATE ONLY from 6.3 to 6.3.1
Just for clarification this is not a complete rom this is only an Update
AND THIS IS ONLY IF YOU HAVE 6.3, not CM
Ok I have packaged up the 6.3.1 update with only the files changed or modified removed and added from 6.3
Included in this is:
unsecure boot image
busybox
su binary
and su apk
This is for anyone with root and Custom Recovery (Like TWRP) already installed and still on 6.3
this will not format system it will just update the need files.
So all current apps will remain and all data will be intact.
Install and wipe dalvik and cache, then reboot
Download Update 6.3.1
Files updated, added or removed
Posting this tomorrow after i BUILD THE LIST
Works beautifully, as usual.
Rooted 6.3 users... you can wait until the automated OTA update wipes out your root, custom bootloader and recovery, or you can spend 5 minutes installing this update and move on with your life like nothing ever happened. I know which I'd choose.
I was waiting for something like this. Worked like a charm on modaco. Thanks so much.
too late
Darn it, should have turned off wifi. Downloaded this, but battery was low and while recharging OTA hit me. Any recommendations on the easiest way to regain custom recovery and root? Thanks

Another briliant creation! I have used every single one of these differential updates since 6.2.
Only problem with this one is it wiped out one of my Go Launcher screens.. Not too big a deal, I think I can recall all the apps on that page. Odd that it happened though.
Will this work on Modaco 6.3 from?

I should work fine , other then you will lose some of the customization from his build.prop as this on uses the stock prop.
Anyone notice that the app menu kind of flashes that icons overlap briefly? I don't know if it's a bug introduced with this update or if it's just me.

I use GoLauncher EX and I did not have this happen. At the very least, you can back up your GoLauncher screen/app setup in the settings menu, so that you can restore it if it ever becomes necessary for whatever reason.
I got hit with it (I think) and it took a lot of effort to flash MaCaDo. Now I'm running FFF 1.4, CWM recovery (doomlord), and device 6.3_User_401992 MaCaDo custom Rom Gr8. Easiest way to flash bootloaders and recoveries, including twrp. You can't mess it up, just follow the directions, exactly as it says.
Kindle Fire Utility that's the easiest way out there.

Hey i need some help. I've been updating use these differentials since way back, around 6.2. Since this one, to 6.3.1, I'm having trouble with battery life. I got a battery life monitor and it seems that my kindle is being held awake. But no application time corresponds, app usage will be super low in that time. I've taken to turning off wifi which helps a bit but I'm still bleeding allot of amps.
i imagine it's time to use a full pre rooted 6.3.1, that clutter may be collecting from updating this way for so long. But will i need to reinstall Skype, Google market, Google contacts sync adapter, and google calendar sync adapter?

I am definitely not seeing this with this update. IN fact, I think I've only had the KF plugged in twice since this update. It does fine sleeping off the charger.
It really sounds like one of your apps. Even the full update shouldn't cause you to reinstall any of your apps, provided they are user apps and not stored in system space. You can always back everything up with Titanium backup so you can quickly restore anything, anyway. Since you are rooted, I'd also suggest making a nandroid backup with CWM (or use TWRP). Neall

Hi, I was wondering if there was a SimpliGio or, even better, GioPro ROM available for flashing via ClockworkMod Recovery, as my phone was fully immersed in water and now the USB port doesn't actually act as a USB port, only a charging port, and I have Ubuntu Linux anyway so I can't flash via ODIN (PC's not powerful enough to run any virtualization software).
I'd like to try either of the two ROMs again, or even something similar, but as they require flashing through ODIN that's kind of impossible.
If not I guess I'll just have to go back to CM7.2, as it was pretty stable (I just got bored of it).
Thanks!
what part of cm7.2 are you bored of? if its stable and running well, try downloading and using a different launcher, different themes etc....
hope that helps...though you may have already thought of all that lol.
Yes, I did think of all that
I guess I'm just a crack-flasher at heart. I'm currently using JOYOS, ported to Gil by phiexz, which is pretty stable (though no longer in dev because of whatever reason phiexz left).
The only thing I don't like about it is the wallpaper doesn't scroll.
I may eventually go back to CM7.2, but trying new things is just too enjoyable. Yes, having to constantly resync my Google Account (2 step verification) and restore all my apps is a pain, but it's worth it.
Anyway, my question still remains: is there a .zip, recovery-flashable GioPro and/or SimpliGio ROM? It's okay if you say no, I still have a few ROMs to try on my MICROSD

I rooted my KF. Already removed all the Amazon stuff and went to ICS, now I'm with a JB rom, but there's a lot of problems, one of them it's the charging (It's not easy to charge), requires some tricks.
I bought this KF to give to my girlfriend on her birthday. It will be not mine.
So, I'm thinking, should I use Cyanogenmod 7 and stays on 2.3.7 or should I give to her on JB? If I install 2.3.7 what will I lose? I mean on functions?
Thanks

You can dual boot kindle. I think the only way to watch Prime Videos is to use stock rom. So you can have stock as alternative and some other ROM as basic.

If it isn't yours, you should've left it alone but, we've already come this far, so let's make the most of it. In my opinion, I'd use JB, only because of the features you get (And the bragging power.) As far as I know, the charging problem is universal on all the ROMS (Somebody correct me if there is one I havn't tried yet.) The feature you lose from not having stock are; No access to the Prime Videos, or download the videos from the device you bought on the stock ROM. (Pisses me off, I bought like 5 movies and can't even get 'em on) 2. You can't use the Kindle Lending Library. 3. You are gonna have a less stable OS, to begin with. But, there are some advantages, having google frameworks, and maps api, nativly in your OS. The ability to Overclock, within the OS settings. The developing tools, the list just goes on. (CM in general.) If I were you, I'd use CM9 or CM10. If your GF won't need some of the advance feature, then I'd use stock. If she just would want it to read or watch videos, I'd use Stock. It all depends on her needs/wants in the end.
EDIT:
I wouldn't suggest using the Dual-Booting bootloader, it's pretty complex. Also, only some ROMS can be used with it (If I remember correctly).
Thank you for the opinions guys. I will stick with the JB, the only problem I see right now it's the charging one. Hope there's a fix soon.
what about flashing it back to stock?
If I revert to the stock rom it will charge normally?
Thanks

Yes.
If you want a stock rom I use Gr9. It's basically stock firmware with Google Play installed. It's also rooted so to watch Prime Video you have to install OTA Root Keeper and temporary unroot it.

Back to stock
If its not yours and you dont wont to be constantly fixing every little issue it has...take it back to stock.I rooted and flash a custom rom for my daughters phone and every time it has an issue its my fault
Why not just install MoDaCo ROM for an easy to use, rooted, Fire interface with Play store preinstalled?
For a pure Android ROM, ICS is the best balance between features and stability
I have an A100 that I flashed a very old version of Flex Reaper to right when ICS came out. So the complete setup looks like this.
CWM (very old version)
Android 4.0.3
Kernal 2.6.39.4+
Build Number
FLEX-100-REAPER-R3.1
Also has Crossix memory swap mod.
I set it up many months ago, and it has run great ever since.
Until, my son decided to pull out the SD card while it was running. @#%@[email protected]#^$#
Now, it won't let me update, or install anything. It says there is not enough storage room left even though it shows 18G of free space. I am guessing things got corrupted when the boy pulled the card out.
So, I have two questions.
1. Whats the safest way to dump this sucker and reload it from scratch?
a. Are there any gotcha's I need to look out for? (like removing crossix's mod before booting back into CWM)
2. I see there has been a lot of new recoveries, rom's, and kernal's put out for the A100 since I stop messing with mine. I'd gladly take some advice on setup's. I am much more interested in stability than extra features, or speed. If my son hadn't pulled that card, and corrupted my setup I would have never messed with it again because it just flat worked well as it was. I do however have an interest in Jelly Bean if there is a solid rom built at this time. I saw the CM10 threads, but there is so much back and forth, I can't get a good feeling it's solid yet.
Thanks ahead of time,

Yes,
Have you tried removing the crossix mount swap and reapply?
From what I am gathering, you are able to boot up normally, and have full functionality, and can run apps, but just cannot do anything new beyond that?
Such as installing, updates as you said. But can you open up apps that run before the "incident"?
Yes I can run everything already on the device. The only issues at this time are existing apps can't be updated, and new ones can't be installed.
I haven't tried to re-apply the mod swap. I figured the safest route long term would be a complete wipe, and start from a newly flashed rom. Might not be necessary, but I just figure safer long term. I am not afraid to re-flash it. It's still rooted, and unlocked. I just know it's better to be safe and ask questions first. I wouldn't be the first guy to brick an A100, it's not the friendliest device to work with.
The second question is based on the fact that if I am going to re-flash it, I may as well move to a more current rom if it is as stable as the rom I am coming from.
Sorry if I am a PITA, but thanks for helping out

Nah dude, your fine. Kinda why I hang around here.
In this case, I would not mess with trying to flash a new recovery.
As for CM9 or 10, I'm a strong advocate for 10. Others will argue. I had a lot of app compatibility issues with CM9.
That being said, your best bet for stability is CM10 09/02/12 build. It is the currently longest running build with few complaints. Pio has been kind enough to resume development for the A100 and has released an updated source build to 11/08/12, its what I am running and runs great.
Stock kernel is not bad, godmachines v2.0 kernel offers a few more tweaking options and is very good as well.
Download your flavors of ROM and kernel and put on your external SD. I'm sure you know what to do from there.
BTW, for cm/ICS. Flex-relix is most popular.
Iconia A100 CM10 PRIVATE BUILD, TabletUI, Updated to 11/03/12 Source; godmachine v2.0 kernel
I agree. Take your pick of the popular ROMs on the first dev page. Full wipe and reflash the one you pick, as per the ROMs instructions. I would backup any needed data off the microsd card and reformat it also, NTFS.
Thanks goes to both of you.
I was trying to get a grasp on if I need to upgrade to a new rom or not. It's a tough question to ask on what is basically a developers forum as this is a family tablet. Stability is much more of a concern than raw performance. I along with most others here always wants the latest on our devices, but when the tablet in question basically belong to the wife and kids, obviously stability take priority. I travel too much to deal with "issues". No digg to developlers. Bug's are just part of the process I understand. I test software for a living. I just want to leave that part of my life at work. We all appreciate what you do here.
Glad to hear that there is not much point in upgrading what already works from a recovery standpoint, but CM10 is sounding like a solid rom. I have it on my gnex, and it is just simpler to keep everything the same. I look forward to the update
Thanks everyone.
Ok, so I did a little reading to get caught back up on how to work with this device. I just wanna make sure I have the correct order, and files I need to get this done right the first time.
1. Delete the "install_recovery.sh" file that is there because of crossix swap mod.
2. Boot into CWM recovery, and wipe basically everything. (there is nothing on the tablet I need)
3. Flash the lastest CM10 found here http://droidinsider.com/download.php?folder=a100/ ? I think?
4. Flash kernal ( I can't find a link to download "godmachines v2.0 kernel" ) any help?

Here you go bud. It's always good to have a stockpile. Soooo...
CM10 4.1.2 Sources 11-8-12
CM10 4.1.1 Sources 9-2-12
Modded Stock ICS ROM (Acer Modded ROM)
FLEX-A100-REAPER-RELIX_Rev2
So choose your flavor of ROM, and than you can use the stock kernel, or the highest recommended by linuxsoxiety aka godmachine: godmachine v2.0 kernel
Gapps (Source Dependant)
4.1.1 Source Gapps
4.1.2 Source Gapps
Stinky ICS Gapps
You won't need to mess with crossix mount swap removal, will be removed upon wipe.
Boot into CWM. Now I use TWRP recovery (although I use CWM on my G2x), so the terms might differ slightly, but I think you'll understand:
Perform:
Factory/Data Reset (wipe)
Format/Wipe Cache
Format/Wipe Dalvik Cache
Format/Wipe System (in CWM, goto mounts and select format /system)
Just to be safe, I would:
Format/Wipe Internal Storage/SD
Than flash from external SD
ROM
Kernel (if not using stock)
Gapps (proper for source?)
Than make sure you follow the ten min, reboot, ten min rule. I'm sure you know what I mean from your studying.
Should be good.
Although, I recommend using GL to SD app in place or crossix mount swap. Takes a lil more effort to use, but, if there is an accidental SD pull, it won't affect the system.
Hope this helps.

So i'm fairly new in these things (custom ROMs and such), and recently installed Hashcode's cyanogen mod from here.
After failing the first time and temporarily bricking my kindle (after making the stupid decision to wipe all my data), I luckily managed to get the rom into the data folder and flashed it from there with TWRP. So now i've got the mod working, but for some reason, the wifi isn't working. I try to turn it on but it doesn't seem to be detecting anything.
Anyway, i've searched around that this problem does tend to happen with certain ROMs, and I wanted to know if this is a current limitation of the unofficial release. I'd post in the other thread, but i'm a new member ,etc. so I thought i'd try my luck here
