[Q] Rooted + Tethering - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

So I've got the 5GB of data on my phone, to which I barely use 1GB, sometimes 2 depending on what I'm doing. I keep most of my data use to using Spotify or when I check FB or whatnot, the rest of the time I use wifi for my data consumption. So in looking at switching my plan around a bit, I'm considering dropping down to the 2GB a month plan.
My question is... will me tethering while rooted slip it past the T-Mobile checks? Or will it trip and bump me to the tethering fee? The reason why I ask is because on Sprint, you could be rooted and it wouldn't get caught with the "tethering checks".
I found a couple threads that talk about it, but I don't have a definitive answer. Some say that Wifi sharing manager needs to be frozen, some say tethering manager... some say that if you are running a custom ROM it'll bake the ability to tether without any carrier repercussions in...
In my situation, there is no tethering manager on my phone, but there are 2 instances of "wifi sharing manager" on my phone and I am running Juggernaut 5.0.

I want to know too. Does Juggz have Wi-Fi tethering included??
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda

the dev removed tethering manager because that was discovered to be the reason for the upsell link when trying to tether. Many have found that removing tethering manager will allow our phone to use tethering completely free. Others have found removing wifi sharing/manager etc (there are 3) have helped them with tethering.
I remove all 4 because it is not necessary for anything.
BTW, if you barey use 1gb and sometimes hit 2... might as well save $10 each month.

What is the fourth one called?
I see:
-Tethering Manager
-Wifi Sharing
-Wifi Sharing Manager
Thanks

[Q] Tethering costs?

Hello all,
So I currently own a T-Mobile G2, on a two year contract with T-Mobile (US) with an unlimited 4G data plan. Normally, I believe that I'd need to buy a tethering plan from T-Mobile (for $15/mo or so) to use Froyo's built-in tethering feature.
If I were to root my phone and install, say, CyanogenMod 7, would tethering cost me anything or would it use my data plan instead?
The tethering charges have only affected a few. While I was running stock, I was able to still tether for free. From what I've read, by root and flashing CM, you will (continue) to be able to tether for free.

T-Mobile looks at the user agent of the browser you are using, so if you are tethering they can tell, but I think that they don't force you to sign up for tethering if you stay under a certain limit, because I occasionally use tethering and have never had problems, but a lot of people have eventually gotten to the point that when they try to tether, they just get a screen telling them to sign up for the $15/month plan (sorry for the long sentence). I think that it doesn't matter how you are tethering (USB or wifi, built-in or 3rd-party) because the user agent still goes through.
You could change the user agent of your desktop to an android one. I have an android user agent set up in firefox, so when I need to tether for a while I will use firefox instead of chrome and it looks like my computer is just the phone. It's pretty easy to set up a custom user agent in firefox, and you can see your android user agent by going to www.whatsmyuseragent.com on your phone. Like I said, however, I've done some tethering with just a desktop user agent and haven't had problems. I think you will be fine with whatever tethering option you use as long as you don't use exorbitant amount of data.
Sorry this is kind of long, but hopefully it helps.
Its actually www.whatsmyuseragent.com

Thank you so much! This was very useful information.
i have used cm7 and was able to tether without costs but as others have said it may depend on the amount of data u use. i only use it a bit when my neighbors wifi goes down(yah i know im cheap) and havent gotten charged.
Haha don't worry your not the only one probably a lot more people you wouldn't even think that would do that probably are lol. I do but that's only if something is taking forever and if its a big file but I just use my phone now adays I used to go sick on sprints unlimited internet with my netbook. you couldn't get me off that damn thing lol I know for sure I went waaaaaaaaayyy past any limit. and they didn't charge me more on my bill thank god cuz I bet I would of had to give them the shirt off my back lol that's how broke id of been hahaha.

Can we still tether for free?

Is it still possible to tether using are Dinc. without having to pay the extra service fee?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
you crazy?
yes
I've been using it as my main internet now for nearly 2 weeks since my Cable went out.
Suggested app to use:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
This is the most stable version:
wireless_tether_2_0_7.apk
As always you must be rooted for this to work. Without rooting, tethering will cost you 30$ / month
more backstory:
Google removed that tethering app from the market, likely because of pressure from Wireless Providers. However there are others (barnacle, some flower one that is nearly identical to android tether app). I still prefer the one listed above to those, barnacle never worked well for me and the flower UI was annoying
Cheers.
You can also still tether for free even without root using the stock app. if you change a setting in EPST.
##778, edit, (code is 000000), MIP default profile, change dun networking from ##########@dun.vzw3g.com to ##########@vzw3g.com. Something like that. That's just from memory. Also still works in the leaked GB ROM. I've done it for some friends that don't want to root, but wanted tethering for free for the occasional use. I use tethering, but don't abuse it or use it very often.
I wonder who pushed through banning some of the wifi tether apps in the market.. The carriers with the "censored" market are Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile (Sprint noticeably absent). I can understand why the carriers wouldn't want people having free access to a paid service, but I don't know about Google satiating them and pulling the apps from the market..
But yes, tethering for free is very possible. I've used the built in tethering of CM7, barnacle, and wifi tether, and I'd say the wifi tether app linked to in the first reply works the best. Seemed like the built in tether would crap out after a while, where with wifi tether, it just keeps working and also shows DL/UL speeds and totals.

For the past few weeks, if I tried to update "that tethering app" when I got the update-available notice, Market would respond with the "Not Found" message.
Because, well, like you said...
But this morning it updated without a hitch.
Still doesn't show up in a market search, but updates OK now.

AT&T Galaxy S3, what tethering app is everyone using?

So I know AT&T, being the disgusting American capitalist corporation that they are, decided to completely disable wireless tethering and make you pay for it with a monthly fee on your bill. This is completely unacceptable if you ask me.
This is a thread to see what Wi-Fi tethering apps you guys are using, with and without root. Hopefully we can get a list going so people can try out some different ones if certain ones don't work for them.
I'm using a completely stock phone, unrooted. Just downloaded FoxFi from their website, and installed the apk on my phone. It's usually available on Google Play but AT&T decided to block it. However, I can confirm that if you download the APK and install it that Wi-Fi tethering works perfectly. I connected my work laptop to my phone just now and used dropbox for a bit, and I also tried a few different websites.
Elixir 2
Foxfi here. It works great on my unrooted phone.

if you download an app, the only thing AT&T would be able to see is your data usage. if your data usage all of sudden goes up, that's usually related to tethering.
i use FoxFi on my unrooted Galaxy S3.

definitely not true.
they can tell by the number of 'hops' that data traffic goes through to the end client. that is how they found me. i was using CM9 (built-in enabled hotspot) for 3 months on my old phone and they finally sent me the "Did you know tethering requires a plan?" text, and sent me a letter telling me I had to stop before X date or they'd change my data plan. when I called in playing dumb they listed off a number of apps that i might have used 'accidentally', which was the list of all the tethering apps i've heard of, and asked if i used them.
IMHO, the only safe way to tether via wifi on an unrooted phone would be to set up ADB via wifi, then use Easytether over that wifi ADB connection. Anything that resembles straightforward "phone as transparent access point" is too easy for carriers to detect. You have to masquerade your traffic, and the more opaque you can make it (say, by further tunneling it over a PPTP or L2TP VPN), the better.
A rooted phone has a few additional possibilities, but they involve completely replacing the tethering app that's bundled with the phone with one that goes out of its way to masquerade your traffic and disguise its wifi-routed origins.
You can also change over to a mobileshare plan. It's saving me a few bucks per month, and tethering is allowed with no additional fee.
"Tethering and/or mobile hotspot use is permitted with Mobile Share plans with capable Designated Devices; provided, however, that such use is limited to a maximum of five (5) simultaneous users per Device." "If you use a tethering and/or mobile hotspot Device with more than five (5) simultaneous users, you agree that AT&T may suspend or terminate service to the account."
So it looks like they're watching for multiple receivers in the traffic and if they see more than 6 (the device itself and 5 attached clients), then it flags.

Good call on Elixir 2. Works really fast on an non-rooted Galaxy S III
Foxfi worked perfectly for me up until this latest OTA update and now it won't work at all. Was using Power Toggles to activate it, but this is no longer working. I've been searching for a working replacement for the last few days without any luck so if anyone has found an app that works after the update I would greatly appreciate you sharing the name. Thanks!!
I use wifi tether on a rooted S3. It works pretty well. It has similar options to that of a router.

He was using the built in tethering feature of CM9, which is also part of stock Android.
I use wifi tether. It was the only thing that let me connect to my vpn and tether at the same time.
Haven't used it very much tbh. Maybe 2 hours total in the past couple of weeks. But so far so good
I don't think att would have an idea I was tethering since all the data is going through my vpn and is encrypted.
If they somehow managed to find out, I'm prepared to take them to court and will ask for proof in discovery which would make everything public as far as how they caught me.

Hello all,
I have been using this tethering method for a few weeks now, but all of sudden, my phone gets stuck on "Please wait while verifying..." message. It never errors, and I can cancel the process. I have tried to restore the offical tethering files, in hope to get the "Please call blah blah for more information message, but the same result happens too. My phone did recently download a system update, but I haven't allowed it to install. If anyone can shed some light on this I would greatly appreciate it.

[Q] Cyanogenmod and Tethering

Has anyone been able to get the 'WiFi tether for Root Users' or TrevE Mod working in Cyanogenmod 10.1.2 or any AOSP ROM on the SGH-T999? I ask because I haven't. I reached my 500mb cap for this billing cycle and want to maybe prevent that from happening in the future, or at least get it working.

What you are attempting to do is not possible? They should be able to measure the amount of data that goes through your phone, because it can be done on their end, so there would be nothing for you to exploit. My understanding of the tethering hacks were that they allowed you to tether if you didn't have the tethering provision on your account (whether you did not pay for it, or are unlimited, and they don't give you the option). I've seen the hacks that claim to be able to bypass the data caps, but unsure why it would be implemented in such a way that anyone could exploit it.

Well of course they can watch my data use, but whether or not I'm tethering with that data is another thing. I was able to use about a gig and a half last billing cycle on their unlimited plan, by just using TrevE mod (no vpn app) on Touchwiz based roms and only about 300mb showed in the tmo my account app.
I was under the impression from what I've read that apps like TrevE mod can give you more access untell they put the kibosh on you, and if you go though a VPN you can use it all you want cause all of the network traffic is going though the VPN app not Windows and Chrome etc. which they look for.
I'm mainly wondering if that app 'WiFi Tether For Root Users/TrevE mod' has worked at all in AOSP, even 4.1.x.
I think T-Mobile has improved their detection and now know when you're using those apps or mods. Lately everyone seems to be reporting that they do not work.
As to whether or not you could use em in cm, I doubt it. If you didn't see it say so in the op and it wasn't reported working by others posting in the thread, it's safe to say it doesn't.
Did you search and read through the thread?

I haven't seen tethering or hotspot mentioned at all in any T999 AOSP op i've looked at which is discouraging. For CM10.1 people seem to only talk about the the included tether.
As for 'WiFi Tether for Root Users' its so widely used any thread I look at is device specific most of the time, and/or for that devices stock rom. But there are so many settings in there though I thought maybe someone got it working.
If they did they would have posted it in the mods thread if anywhere. But if it can't be done you could almost certainly find that info in the same thread.

I am running CM10, rooted on a SGH-T999. Following the forums I downloaded Hotspot Shield as the post stated it was the only shield (VPN or otherwise) that would work with TreveE-Mod Wifi-Tether. Sadly, I found that using Hotspot Shield really slowed down my connection to a crawl and also caused problems using tether to stream Netflix, Hulu+. etc. I did find another VPN app that worked (Hideninja VPN) but it also slowed me down tremendously and caused issues with nationwide streaming copyright protections on Netflix, etc. as well. I do pay the $30 for T-Mob's unlimited albeit shackled internet package.
I have a newer Dell laptop running WIN8 and have not tested this on any other version of Windows but:
My SGH-T999, CM10 and TreveE-Mod all work together flawlessly to give me a T-Mob upsell to WiFi hotspot message in my browser whether I change the User Agent or not. :crying::crying::crying:
Then I installed UltraSurf VPN on my laptop and my tethered speeds are AWESOME!! WITHOUT having to change my User Agent settings.
No need for Hotspot Shield or HideNinja.... no VPN setup on my phone, just UltraSurf on my puter and the tortoise has turned into a hare!

[Q] How to Get Around T-Mobile Hotspot

Ok, I know I have seen a few threads about this but nothing conclusive or, dare I say, noob friendly as to how to resolve it. So I am asking here. My roommate has moved out leaving me with a few weeks of having to rely on my phone for internet. I am currently running Infamous v.8 and by using Hotspot Shield Free and Wifi Tether TrevE I can hotspot tether for a limited about of data before I have to wait about 6 hours or so. I am looking to find a way to just hotspot tether natively without using apps and without getting the T-mobile screen. I have used many roms including the Carbon KitKat rom using dalvik but still get the T-mobile screen, if the computer connects at all.
I have heard about some libs you can push to get tethering to work, but having never done that, I would need some detailed instructions.
Thanks for any help you can give.
Do this it works on the att s4 using the built in native hotspot feature
First go to settings applications /manager /all
Your tmobile s4 may not have the native hotspot feature but if does this step is critical for it to work...
Find the hotspot app disable it .
Next go to any root browser tool and go to prefer rom toolbox lite.
Go to System/app find tetheringprovsion.apk rename it to tetheringprovision.bak
Rename the tetherprovision.odex
To tetherprovision.bak2
Download the modified tether provision apk from the att s4 general forum. and copy it into sytem/app folder same folder you renamed the others.
reboot phone and then after reboot.
Go back to settings apllication manager/all
and re enable hotspot
Then you can tether .

I know some ROM's that have tethering and portable hotspot built in. On my old Samsung Relay had a Clockwork mod, and when I went to settings, more - there was an area for tethering and portable hotspot and it ran just like it was a normal function included with the phone. Loved it.
So check the different rom's out there some should have the same thing.
