Hi,
I'm a VERY newbie developer and have searched to no avail for a way to enable and disable HDMI output on a Sony Ericcson Experia Arc.
The situation is this. I have the phone connected to a monitor, displaying a WebView. When the power is disconnected, the phone should sleep as far as possible to preserver battery. Then when power is reconnected, the Webview should show again, with GPS etc renabled. This all works (appreciate this is simple for most, but I'm proud of my achievement!). The trouble is that for some reason the monitor does not then recognise the HDMI.
However, if I unplug and plug in the HDMI cable, the monitor can then see the input. I figured by disabling and renabling HDMI, that would simulate this unplugging and force the monitor to wake up.
It's not part of the standard API. Can anyone provide an easy to understand solution to this? I'm not comfortable with rooting, flashing and all that!!!!
Thanks in anticipation.
The only thing I can suggest is to install this mod http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1554205 because since installing it makes the HDMI output come up in the Liveware manager app, so you can choose to start it/ assign an app to open with it etc.

That's good thinking. I think I need to work out how Liveware works out if the hdmi is plugged/unplugged, so I can put those values, rather than just get them.

I'm not at all affiliated with the developer of this app, I was just prompted to write this review after reading a post that sounded like the problem I was having.
What does NoDock do?
it completely suppresses the docking trigger that occurs in the android system upon docking. it is not like other dock killing apps (there are plenty out there, I've tried 5 or 6, nodock is the only one that actually utilizes root capability to completely eliminate the docking trigger).
Why would I want to suppress the docking trigger?
here are several reasons:
-faulty USB port thinking it is in dock mode when it isn't
-cheap/faulty micro-usb charger causing the phone to think it is being docked when it isn't
-magnetic phone case triggering docking when pulling phone out or putting it back in to the sleeve
Symptoms you might be encountering that point to some sort of issue with docking:
-"Car Mode Enabled" constantly popping up in your notification bar
-large variations in media volume through the phone's speaker or headphones (does not apply to USB)
-auto rotation turning itself on even if your settings say otherwise
-when you answer a call, it will default to speakerphone regardless of what your settings are
-etc.
this is the only app that killed the docking event altogether for me. other apps simply placed a "blank" app over car home, which doesn't fix any of the issues listed above.
search for it on the market. there is a trial version and a paid app... the paid app was more than worth it considering the only other option for me was a warranty replacement (imo, $3 up front to fix the problem is more worth it than the wait and hassle of dealing with assurion).
The G2 has no docking sensor (magnet or usb) as far as I am aware. Somebody correct me if I am mislead?
the G2 won't autodock via magnetic sensor because we don't have one, but a faulty usb port and/or some cheap microusb chargers/cables seem to cause an autodock-type situation for some people (myself included) even though it's not an official feature of the phone.
sorry, should have been more clear: this is not just for G2 users, it's for any device with docking capability. I figured someone who was having autodock issues might search and find this regardless of the section it's in.
Hey pmcqueen!! What a wonderful review! You have proposed usage of NoDock that I am not even aware of!
Can I quote your sentences in NoDock's market description page?

You just saved me after a horrible week! Thank you soooooo much for sharing this!
Had this car mode b.s. happening (before my charging port broke a pin :crying: ) but yes after changing many roms freezing apps and every app on the market this is the only one that would actually do the job right... anyone that said they have the same symptoms that I had I would point them to this. was the best app purchase for a phone I made.
My good old GNex comes is due to retire as I've just upgraded. However I thought I could extend it's life by turning it into media centre/Smart TV dongle.
I am thinking about plugging it permanently in my old-school pre-Smart TV plasma. There are 2 things I'd like to be able to do:
1) Have wireless control (either by PC or another Android device)
2) Be able to stream from my PC
Has anyone done something similar? Could you recommend any good software to do it?

Does it have HDMI? If so:
1 - MHL Cable, Bluetooth Mouse & Keyboard, Wireless Joystick
2 - Plex For Android
3 - Android Game Emulators (GBA = Gameboid / NDS = DrAstik emulator / Sega genesis / PSX / Etc...)
4 - A really good charger for the MHL so the device doesn't run out of juice quickly enough.
5 - Also This app to turn off the screen cause you won't need it when you're on HDMI (HUGE Battery impact)
5 - Store all games on the phone, Use plex to manage media, Use a custom launcher to arrange stuff and lock the desktop.
6 - Maybe install some office apps or something?
7 - Voila, Now you have a Media/Gaming/Browsing/Productivity Center, For Cheap!
For more details check out : Lifehacker
Gonna give it a go. Thanks.
Is there any way of controlling it from another device. There is usually another phone and a laptop laying around my living room so getting another keyboard seems a bit redundant.

You can use TeamViewer (it'll drain much battery though) , Screenoff lite has a remote control option with the paid version.

I'm interested to hear your results as I will be retiring my gnex soon as well.

I'll let you know, there is slight delay as I dropped it and the screen cracked but it was still insured so I'm waiting for it to come back.
Hey all,
I'm using the iBolt car dock with my S3. I've updated to 4.3 and my S3 would still launched Car Home Ultra until about a week ago. The only correlation I can make is I was playing with the Day Dream feature and since then it wouldn't launch CHU. I tried clearing the default setting on CHU to get the launch application choice again, but it didn't work. I can tell that it is recognizing the dock as I get the sound and the home screen rotates to landscape. I've read that 4.2 remove the home button link to CHU but I didn't think that would change the ability to launch CHU. I've tried using the custom APK to change the home button function but it still goes back to the home screen and not CHU.
Is there anything that someone can think of to try? I have rooted my phone and have access to Root Explorer and SQLite editor, so I can do some troubleshooting if I know where to look.
TIA!
-Shawn
Well, I spent yesterday and last night rebuilding from a factory reset and no difference. Is this even an option anymore for an application to launch when a dock is connected? If someone can tell me that, it would be most helpful.
It's just odd that it worked after the update to 4.3 and then it stopped.

Hi Shawn, I am with iBOLT. Also try to download the new DockMode Control app we just made available on Google Play, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.iboltdockmode.carhome&hl=en It simply starts the "DockMode" app like Dock'n Drive, Ulysse Speedometer or the CHU app. If it does not work with our cable, it will work with an NFC tag. Let me know how this works out...

This is fantastic! This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you very much!
Now if you could go and tap Braden and let him know the cable he send me didn't fix the cellular data noise issue, I'd be even more happy.
Hello
when my head unit starts, it always opening Music app that I really don't like...
how can I prevent it from running? there no option to disable the app (via settings), the device is not rooted so I cannot uninstall it or freeze it...
please advise (info on my head unit is attached)
thanks
Also interested to know how to do this. In my case the radio app starts automatically, which is pretty annoying because it starting on a frequency that we do not have broadcast on (87.5 Mhz). Which gives you a really noicy start on your drive...
Thanks
I've know it's possible only with root, but it seems there's no way to connect the kit for a laptop for rooting...
Can tools like OneClickRoot or similar work perhaps? Tried to contact seller of head unit, but do not quite understand the more technial aspect of android or programming of it.
Oneclickroot supposed to work, but nothing is happening when I plug the unit to my laptop... I've ordered a male-to-male usb cable to try maybe the rear usb ports will work... Waiting for eBay package...
You can root the 4.4 units by just using a specific password, check the Wiki.
Also you can disable apps in 4.4 without root (not all apps can be disabled tho).
The headunit will start playing whatever source it was last playing when it was turned off, so you can exit the radio app if you'd like, also it shouldn't start at 87.5 unless you left it on that freq, make sure the acc and constant power wires are correct and you aren't resetting the unit.
@jakejm79 mine is 4.1.1 not 4.4...
Hey,
I've finally managed to root the device!!
Instructions
* On the device, download `Root Master 2.1.1` on this URL: Root_Master_2-1-1.apk
* Make sure internet connection is active, `Root Master` downloads instructions depending on the device you have
* Open `Root Master`, refuse the update (last version of root master will not work)
* Click the big button where it is written “ROOT”
* Wait, it will ask you to install an app, install it (otherwise it will keep you asking that)
* Wait again, at the end a message popup, click the purple left button, it will reboot the device and install SuperUser (right button is for rating)
* Your device is Rooted !
Pretty easy !

So I did managed to freeze Music.apk using titanium backup.
now I'm searching for the best music player (any suggestions beside Poweramp?)
and also I need to find some player that can run automatically when unit is starting and resume from last playback...
and it seems the wheel control buttons are not working with any but the native music app (the one that I was freezing)
thanks
hi
I have started building a nexus 7 2013 for my car , I have a question regarding a dash cam, I have searched the playstore to find an app to be able to background record from a usb camera and allow recording to usb storage (which I havnt been able to find),
id like to use either a usb webcam or what I was thinking about was the usb camera from the joying headunit range, which then got me also wondering if their car record app which is on their unit which is android kk, would work for the nexus with the joying cam or a web cam??
if not plug and play could the apk be modified to work ( beyond my capabilities I may add ) ive found a link to to where I came across the apk and a little info, but cant post external links
or can an app be fooled into thinking the usb external camera is the rear facing device camera, as in my case could never use it as my nexus 7 rear camera is behind my dashboard fascia
I pretty much have everthing ready to install, but would love to be able to get a dash cam incorporated, a good quality dedicated cam is just too dam expensive
hope someone can give me any helpful info, surely someone has maybe done?
as far as i know you can use any webcam via OTG as long as its a uvc compliant. You can try to do a search on UVC webcams and it will give you a list.
thankyou for the reply
I know I can use a uvc camera this isn't my problem, ive got multiple ones which work, its finding an application that will record in background to external drive which is my problem
well I think ive now found an app in the playstore that will do exactly what I wish, but I cant save to an external drive, which I really need tbh, as my device only a 16g wifi model
if anyone interested the app in the playstore its usb camera by ShenYao China
if anyone could help to maybe modify the app to change its save location that would be awesome
and I reckon I also need some help to automate pressing record and keep in background
the app can natively be sent to background recording and it functions perfectly with timurs 6.0 rom, and ive tried leaving it background recording, then simulating ignition off, upon ignition back on and checking the recorded file it saves in full
but id like this fully automated one tablet gets power with ignition to start usb camera app in background+record button pressed, another task I wish I could set would be to delete the recordings after a set size, or stop /start recording after set time or even after a set number of files ssaved in the usb camera save location , tried with automateit pro, get it to start the app but cant figure out the rest of the tasks in automateit,
and tasker confuses the absoloute **** out of me tbh, I understand little to do with android os as a whole
I'm fairly newish to android.
