Hi,
I am what you might call a total Apple zombie, in fact I never had any other SmartPhone but an iPhone since '07. Due to the huge disappointment with the 4S, I was finally fed up and switched to the Galaxy Nexus. However, while this seems to be a cool developer phone, I have huge issues with using it in a productive environment. But that is probably just due to my own ignorance ...
[Backup&Restore]
Poor me is hit with an update notification like 50 times a day. I suspect that I will lose all data when I hit install so I am quite hesitant here. With my iPhone I did not even had to bother with stuff like that, it synced with iTunes over WIFi whenever I was in one my home networks. The Nexus does not seem to offer such functionality.
What I expect to be backup'ed is all:
of my mail (around 4GByte) that I frequently need to have available offline
my Navigation system and maps (Sygic + Navigon atm)
my music would be nice due to reasons I elaborate on later
SMS, phone records, etc ...
I tried the following means for backups already:
ADB: with command line "adb backup -apk -shared -all -f ./backup_all.ab" --> result was only 700MByte so I won't trust it a bit (my data is around 13GByte)
Titanium Backup: told me all worked fine but my phone has not enough free space for saving the backup to the pseudo-SD, the file is corrupted, and dropbox is rejecting the maps and my email account data (looks like they are bigger than 400MByte or something ...)
Google Sync: is missing all that des not have a google stamp on it
[EDIT] Noting is worse but to switch on Navigation and get the message that the map was not downloaded and to reload 400-800MByte of maps over a roaming 3G connection at the airport or use a super slow paid airport WiFi. Same goes for my e-Mail, I need it searchable and accessible.
What are the pro's suggesting here? I only have around 3GBytes of disk space available on my phone, the cloud services does not like big files, and the ADB backup seems to lack some stuff (though I cannot really tell what it is leaving out).
[Navigation]
I am abroad very often and do not like to pay insane roaming fees for online navigation systems. That is why I acquired two products, Navigon and Sygic since Navigon Europe is crashing right away.
I am used to the iPhone 4, which means: load App, set destination, boom, go ... My Nexus however, needs a warm-up of around 15 minutes and then constantly loses its signal. Furthermore the screen is not always auto-rotating so that I go in the wrong direction from time to time. Am I just too stupid to operate such things?
[Music Sync]
As I said, I am used to iTunes and all is synced automatically. With the nexus I tried Google music but it is not originally available in my country and it cannot find any management software apart from sync. The Music webpage does not let me logon since a couple of weeks now but the Music Manager works on Windows and uploads some of my files. However, how do I add or delete new songs? Am I stuck to add the to iTunes, import them by Music Manager, and wait for an upload?
I also tried Winamp sync but it crashes whenever I want to sync by WiFi and my Mac is not seeing the device sometimes.
[Car Mode]
Both of my cars support the iPhone by cable and BT. I usually use the cable mode because the phone needs to be charged anyway. My cars are playing the music right away and I can use the steering wheel controls to skip tracks, etc. With my Nexus all I see is "cannot play". When I use Aux-In, which sucks btw., I have no knowledge of any way to make the buttons bigger etc. I needs some filigrane fingers to operate that thing when on the go. The Google car App does not want to install itself because it seems to be incompatible with the nexus ...
How can a fit-finger syndrome person like me control their phone in a car?
[Network Access]
Whenever I am in highly shielded environments (that happens often), such as a underground parking garage, a hospital white room (MRT, CT, etc.) or in a research center with much electromagnetic interference, my Nexus is losing its GSM network access and this is okay. However, it does not gets it back when I am out again when I am not switch the phone off and on again! I have already had overflowing mailboxes so often that I have a habit now to restart my phone whenever I am outside again. That is ridiculous! Is that a hardware problem of the phone or do I just have a bad model?
I hope you could enlighten me, as I am totally ignorant concerning Android and their phones. They are indeed a world on their own! Please keep in mind that I am not very knowledgeable so I would appreciate human-understandable information
Included too much information. What update? I'm assuming you're stock and didn't root or do any tweaks?
Just update, all of your settings and such will still be there.

OTA 4.0.2, it is rooted for the Titanium Backup, stock ROM and kernel (4.0.1, KK1-Baseband, 3.0.1 Kernel), no other tweaks I am aware of.
An OTA update doesn't erase anything..

I'm in a similar kind of position and I think that provided you have standard recovery the update will work fine and you'll lose no settings although I've seen some suggestions you'll lose root by updating. Not sure how it would affect you if you have a non-standard kernel tho...

Having root doesn't mean anything. As long as you didn't do any changes to the kernel, or anything outside of /sdcard/ even though you have root. You'll be fine, it won't wipe anything. Just accept the OTA and everything will be okay.
I'd recommend using https://market.android.com/details?...m9yZy5wcm9qZWN0dm9vZG9vLm90YXJvb3RrZWVwZXIiXQ.. as it will keep your root access post-OTA.
@daz.g: Not having the stock kernel provided by Google and accepting the OTA is a huge-nono and will most likely fail. You can keep root with the app I linked above. But using stock ROM + stock kernel + root, your options are rather limited and it's better off going off with Custom ROMs. If people are going to be risky and root, might as well go all the way. Risking and flashing ROMs aren't even that scary
noobish question I know, but I have an HTC smartphone complete with impossibly crappy bluetooth implementation (SIP only no gamepads or keyboards). I don't want to run a different ROM (such as CM7) at least until the phone is out of warranty.
So question is, is there any combination of roms/hacks/homebrew that will keep an Xperia Play functional for Emu's like NESoid and Genplus, and MP3's? Or will the lack of data and phone plan cause it to get bricked?
Dumb question I suppose but without actually canceling the data and phone plan on one it's hard to guess what functionality (if any) the phone would still have.

Given the strong price drops that this device had suffered, some people have actually bought the device as a console of sorts and asked the same as you, about using the device without phone capabilities. The result is affirmative: you can perfectly use the phone without a SIM card, or if you use CDMA you can flash a GSM ROM which will have neither phone service nor data. Wifi, Bluetooth and the rest of the phone's options are at your disposal, including running games and emulators. Some programs run license checks though, so they won't start if you're not online, and thus you will need to have a wifi connection handy.

Like Logseman said, this is possible. My Xperia Play is unactivated, and I just use it to play games and connect to WiFi. It worked out pretty well since I got it as a free Verizon upgrade.
You shouldn't need a plan activated to use the device in general. Only to make calls, text or use non-wifi internet. Emulators and Android games should still work.

And Groove IP.
You don't simply brick a phone by using it without a SIM card
There already have been some complains about misuse of the word "brick". Bricking a phone does not mean it doesn't boot up Android, get boot loops or get force closes, etc. It means your phone won't start up at all, doesn't turn on, can't get into recovery and won't even show up the boot logo. Then there's the hard brick which means it won't even vibrate when holding on the power button and won't even connect to PC, making your phone a waste of glass and metal, which is probably impossible to happen to the Xperia Play. Soft bricking the Xperia Play is ALWAYS repairable, by flashing the original ROM via flash tool, meaning you won't never ever have to worry about the whole bricking thing.

So im old fashion...
Basically i believe a keyboard should NOT have power to record audio.. Now i understand some people like this stuff.. But i dont and if i ever need that feature ill download a seperate application.
Anyway, i moved android.keybaord out of /system and modified its permissions to disallow this. I then patched out the error activity that "force closes" since its just a service it comes back no prob.
Is there some kind of altercation this will cause me down the road? I have nandroid backup.
Also how is there a clean way to disable automatic wifi configuration via dhcp when the wifi radio is off? My current solution is messy... Shouldnt wifi radio being disabled stop all wifi communication? Im not to sure how dhcp functions but i see my phone configuring settings to various wifi networks in the logs even when my radio is off. So i did a messy workaround.....
My dear god! Every system apk has godlike permissions... And this might seem obvious to most. But i refuse to accept my wallpaper accessing my camera... And i know this can be used for cool shot! But jees! Im mutilating my phone because of all this!!
Anyway just modded that too... :/
If anyone knows of future problems of this shot please tell me... I have dual boot and on this partition i have near zero bloatware, and zero google apps.
Ok if anyone knows of a complication.
Like extra battery/cpu use or future corruptipn tell me.

Hey everybody,
Having an odd issue with my brand new M8, which is completely stock. Few days ago I've received an firmware update (1.57.111.2 / German T-Mobile CID) for my handset. Since that update I'm not able to use Google Play Music while connected to my wlan network. It seems like, that Play Music is not able to recognize my fully functional connection and therefore refuses to download and/or stream music.
All other apps (including Spotify) are able to use my wlan connection without any problems.
Turning wlan off helps to correct that error, but that workaround burns away my included traffic
Here's what I tried without success:
1. Did a factory reset
2. Deleted all wlan connections and reconfigured them
3. Cleared Play Music's caches
4. Contacted HTC (recommended the factory reset) as well as my provider (didn't have a clue)
5. Checked the number of eligible devices with Google (currently 3 out of 10)
Now I'm a bit puzzled on how to solve this issue and wanted to ask, if anybody did experience (and maybe solved) this issue.
Best,
Marc
I'm having the same problem. I received a update from T-Mobile USA for my M8 this past weekend. Google Play Music can't keep on device or stream with "Download via Wi-Fi only" and/or "Stream via Wi-Fi only" checked in settings. I hope it's not draining my data

I've discussed that issue with some German M8 users (all on T-Mobile Germany) and it appears to be limited to some Google Apps and to HTC Backup. However one user did reach out to T-Mobile and they're basically just stated, that they're currently looking into that without providing any sort of timeframe within to expect an fix for this. Downgrading the firmware fixes the problem, so T-Mobile must be the ones to blame ... very frustrating.
Hi there,
did anyone solve this issue yet? There is a few of us with an M7 that have exact same issues. I am in UK, so may not be carrier related.

Hey,
Thanks for pointing that out. Wasn't aware, that this issue affects the M7 too. Unfortunately, I'm really stuck at the moment as everybody involved is pointing fingers at each others. HTC tells me, that T-Mobile messed up ... T-Mobile at least confirmed, that there might be an error. Right now I'm trying to get my M8 replaced, as somebody did break some functionality of my device. A German M8 user pointed out, that the WLAN App from Amped Wireless can be used to confirm the error, as it is not able to detect an established WLAN connection (like some of the Google apps).
However, no solutions

I'm really glad to have happened upon this thread, as I'm having the exact same issue on an AT&T M8 that I just purchased a couple of days ago. I updated with the new "extreme power mode" firmware, but now I can't pin music from Google Play at all. Similar explanation and attempted fixes as holychain.
I am having the same issue in Google Music. Also Google+ Fotos has the same Problem: The autosync does not recognize the wifi connection.

Guys, I found the solution to this. I am now on ARHD 71.1 with all the google apps working.
Such a simple fix (well for me) - when the phone connects to your wifi at setup, it automatically sets it as a mobile hotspot and restricts background data. It's just a tick box - go here: settings / More (under wireless & networks) / data usage / click the 3 dots top right and select mobile hotspots then untick your wifi network.
Post back if it works for you. I will post on the main ARHD thread as well as it might be something Mike was unaware off.

I still had to reboot and clear data from the app, but this is working for me. Unfortunately, Play Music is extremely slow to download music right now for me...

Oh thank god I found this thread. This fixed the issue for me, as well as fixing Google photos, and Flickr auto upload. I was almost beginning to regret ditching my 5S for the M8 if the whole reason for me finally switching was due to Google Music being more reliable than iTunes Match.
Whomever set that as default is a jerk.
I just got a new xperia play from hong kong. Its a R800A and its connected to koodo. The only issue is the fact that I can go on the browser but almost every site is blocked/cannot be connected. This is the same situation with every other internet app especially the preinstalled ones like Market. No matter what I do it says something like "Cannot Connect to Servers, Please try again later" It has me so upset and no matter where I go on the internet there is not a single person who can help so I'm making this report and hoping someone can help me.
To speed things up I live in Canada and I can call and text without issue. But when I go to the internet I can't do anything.
Thank you for reading if you have any information on what i can do or what will help please reply and help me
I just bought a used R800X and was wondering the same thing - Wifi doesn't work anywhere except for the stock browser. After some searching apparently Google Play Services support for Android versions under 4.0 was killed off earlier this year.
So if your Xplay is still on 2.3, you won't be able to use the Market or pretty much any app that uses Google Services. You can still sideload apps that you've backed up with Titanium on another device or just install some APKs from the net. If you really can't live without Google Services look into getting a custom ROM based on 4.0+.
My R800X has some dumb issues in regards to the bootloader so ROMs are pretty much out of the question for me, but I was still able to get it rooted and install a bunch of emulators. Hopefully you have better luck. Cheers mate!

Thank you! thankfully I'm bit of a nerd so I went online and force updated the app store to the latest version and now I can get basic apps. Down side is that it keeps breaking and crashing every few minutes so I'm going to uninstall most of the unnecessary apps and see if that will help fix most of the issues with crashing. Also the fact that most of them are always running in the background doesn't help xD.
I also have planes to overclock using my sd card. like take some of the memory to boost my phones power
I had a bit of the same but I managed to get it rooted and my bootloader is unlocked. Thing is most links (like it has been said) has been killed off. But I need a custom rom for the phone...it’s getting me really mad. Suggestions? Help? Please?
For custom ROMs, it's gonna be a crapshoot going through all of the threads and looking for links that are still hosted online somewhere. /u/ TheNameBrand had some success with installing CM9 recently, but ran into wifi issues or something. Here's the link if you're still interested: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2024782
If you end up sticking with stock and don't have the Market/Play Store running, you can download the latest 2.3 compatible version of the Play Store here: https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google...-2-02-release/
