Hello, I'm the the latest Calk 2 1.3a leak based around FC24 with the FC24 kernel. This happened in previous versions but was fixed in FC18 for me. It's back now though. What happens is when I go to the market and the app would default to installing to the USB or SD card instead of the /data partition (Mainly games like DOOMgles, Minecraft) it gives me "Error: Cannot install on USB or sdcard". Is there anyway to fix this besides going to back to FC18 which had bad performance for me compared to FC24.
1. Remove SD card
2. Install
3. Reinsert SD card
4. Enjoy
If it's a game that HAS to be on the SD card than you need to install the stock FC24 kernel. All the modded ones have the problem of not being able to install to the card.

What's strange though is that on FC18, I was able to install games just fine while using the rouge repack kernel. I read on the GS2 forum that samsung put this in on purpose. Why would they do that? :c

It's only my 2 cents, but it seems pretty lame that Samsung doesn't ship the phone with the ability to do a backup/restore from the stock recovery menu. Somehow I can't see Samsung repacking their ROMs themselves with CWM or Rogue kernels...

Hi everyone, I have been lurking the forums for a while looking at info but I want to be sure before I brick this thing. I satrted with an EL29 and did the EL29 stock+ roo from qb king as well as the CWM+rogue for the EL29. Now I am looking to flash to just a GB ROM, no ICS, (Caulkin's maybe?). I want to knwo if I can go about it with what I have installed or if I shoudl flash to EL26 with Odin (if I can even do so?). I know thei has probably been asked a million times, but its so much information I dont even know what to look for. I appreciate the input everyone.
EL29 rogue is sufficient for flashing gb roms, feel free to flash away. The issues are from returning to gb front ics

Okay, so I can do the nandroid backup, and wipig of the disk and cache using the rogue CWM?
Yep. Your good to go!
okay, so i downloaded this ROM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1332837
and i put it in the external sd
I also put the format all zip in the sd to be used first.
I have a nandroid backup and Titanium backup done.
Ill run the format all script then the rom flash after and I should be good? am I missing anything? I would hate for my next post to be that I bricked the thing lol
go grab it

Go to this location and download Calkulin's format all application.
What does it do? - Well my friend this masterpiece of technologically advanced mechanics and engineering does everything you need to do before you flash a ROM, automatically!!
But to be serious just download and put it into you external-SD card, or internal, and then enter CWM, volume-up+power, and then find where you put it into and then select flash and let it do it's magic. It's best to do it twice just in case.
Then flash the ROM, but be warned!, I wouldn't touch Ice Cream Sandwich ROMs until you become proficient in flashing terminology and techniques.
There are TONS of bricks involving "noobs" trying to flash ICS. So it's best you avoid it.
That's it man, you got it. Run calks format all and then flash that beast. Don't get impatient. It may take a little time to flash and then boot.

Let me double check out loud:
1.flash format all
2.wipe cache, dalvik-cache
3.flash ROM
4.reboot
5.connect to internet and download titianium backup
6.restore backups of the applications
7.have fun? lol
You are doing it right.
Titanium backup to SD card (for apps etc.)
Nandroid to SD card using Rogue CWM [as long as it is not TOUCH VERSION!]
back to recovery. Install zip from SD, choose Calkulin's format all.
Back and Install zip from SD and choose the ROM.
As a note; you may be able to get away with using the 'Modified format all' - save data. But if you start getting errors and force closes go back and use the format all.
Also don't forget to update your PRL and Profile afterwards too.
A few more questions, and I really appreciate it guys.
Where is my nandroid backup stored normally, I used the rogue CWM (I am assuming default location) and it finished but I dont know where it was saved.
Also, do I need to change or update the modem after I flash the ROM or no?
Finally, I guess I wont need to access the nandroid backup again unless I want to revert to an old ROM? would that be all I have to do if I decide I dont want to keep Calk's ROM?

The Nandroid is usually in your external-SD card, unless you don't have one, then it's in your internal storage. To access the Nandroids, to change the name, put your phone into debugging mode(settings-->applications) and then connect to your computer and select "view files".
A quicker method would be to use the built in app called "my files" then select clockworkmod(It might be in your ex-sd).
No you don't NEED to update your modem, only your PRL and Profile.
You don't have to mess with the Nandroid backup unless you want to revert back to whatever ROM you backed up.
For me its on external sd in a folder called clockworkmod. You can rename them to identify easier, ex: blazer_4.1_may11. Just make sure there are no spaces or it wont work on restore. Modems are completely interchangeable. You can flash any modem on any rom whether its gb or ics. just flash cache and dalvik cache first and update prl and profile upon reboot
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
Edit: when switching roms you must completely wipe using format all. When I upgrade the same rom to a newer version, I normally get away with the modified format all. That way you don't lose any data or settings. If things start force closing and acting wonky, you know you then have to wipe and start over fresh.
Feel free to ask away. better you get the answers before you break your beautiful phone. Good luck!
Thanks everyone, I am now ROMmed. I appreciate everyone's input. I also installed the ACS ICS theme and it looks awesome. I'm glad I got clarification here. Now I read about flashing to EL26+ last official CWM before doing any ICS flash? I dont plan to but I want to know for when I do decide do (if before the official release)
Also on a side note, and I think this is better posted on the ROMS thread, but for anyone with Caulk's 3.0 mod, is there a way to disable the volume keys turning on the screen? its kind of a pain lol
Yes, el26 is the gateway to ics. How I do it is mobile Odin its a handy tool. Flash el26 tar in mobile Odin and it will reboot hold power + vol up till you get to recovery. wipe and flash ics. To get back to gb or to update an ics rom, I always mobile Odin el26. Its really easy actually once you do it. I understand the fear with all the bricks happening. The main plus either mobile Odin is I can flash on the go without a pc

Ok so I had a question...I flashed ICS. I've never had root as long as I've owned the phone. I flashed that "OTA" from EL29 to FD24zip after watching qbkings video. I was on stock nonrooted never flashed anything EL29,downloaded the update from EL29toFD24zip put it on my external SD card and flashed from stock recovery. Is it going to be a pain to get back to stock unrooted or rooted EL29?

Easy Peasy. Use sfhub's one-click 'reset data' http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101 If you wish to 'unroot' (don't know why though) use his Autoroot to 'unroot'
Is there any reason I would flash from EL29 to FD24 other than ICS? or rather is it ever required? benefits?
also, what is Odexed vs Deodexed? I have seen it a lot lately
anyone? I am especially curiosu about what being odexed vs deodexed is

thanks a lot man. I did a bunch of forum searches until i found some stuff on it. Another question, do thee phones take forever to charge for everyone else?
Hey guys im having a issue where i cant install some/most apps from the market. I get an error '' cant install apps to usb or external sd storage''. Thr issue only happens once i install agats ff11 recovery. When i used sfhubs ff11 odin oc the apps will install fine, but once i odin agats ff11 recovery it stops working. I can unmount the sd card and install the apps just fine but thats the only way. I also can no longer move apps to sd after flashing recovery. Ive searched and tried the unmounting sd trick. Ive read about deleting some market temp files qill fix the problem but i never could find the temp files on my phone. If anyone could provide any help or point me to what i should try next i would greatly appreciate it. I know i can just no t flash agats recovery but i hate the stock recovery. Ive also wiped cache and dalvik but it didnt fix my problem. Thanks in advance guys i appreciate everyones work here.
I am on Agat's ff02 and have the exact same issue. Tried installing Ringtone Maker and get the same error.

Thanks for your response. i havent noticed the issue until i upgraded from FF09 the other day, but then again i havent downloaded any apps lately. i just flashed agat's FF09 recovery and it has the same issue.
i would have posted this in his thread in the dev section but i dont have enough post yet so i posted it here.
So I actually encountered this issue when attempt to flash a different modem that basically was not part of an original leak. So in my case I am running leak FF18 that was fresh ODIN'd was experiencing wifi issues (like a lot of people currently are on the ICS builds) and attempted to flash a different modem (FD26) to remedy the issue. On a side note the FD26 did remedy my wifi issues HOWEVER it introduced the beloved "couldn’t install on USB storage or SD card " error when attempting to install certain apps. The app I was testing with was Crackle. Anyways knowing that this was the only change I had made to my system I tried to flash back the FF18 modem. That was a not go So after a bunch of research I came across an article that basically said to permanently remedy the situation you needed to reOdin. So I figured how about we half ass it the the odin that still preserves data. Cause frankly I am getting tired of rebuilding my device. BINGO! that did the trick. After that I reflashed my custom ROM I am running (Blazer ICS edition) and was able to install all apps.
So now that we are done with the long drawn out story. The take away from this is:
-flashing different modems (and possibly kernels) other than what comes bundled with leak can cause this issue
-grab a copy of the ODIN bundle for your specific leak that preserves data if you dont want a data loss and reflash
-install any app to your liking
I hope this helps somebody
Cheers!
I found something a little different. I figured out a couple of ways to change the modem for ics. If you are already on ff18 and have ff18 modem and want to change to a different one, there are a few ways to go about it. One is to mobile odin flash agat's repack for ff18. Boot into his recovery, wipe cache and dalvik then flash whatever modem cwm zip. After that, boot back into system, update profile then prl then reboot. Use mobile oding to put back the original stock ff18 kernel and that will fix the unable to install thing. Another way is if you're coming from gb and know which modem you want, boot into recovery in gb and flash the desired modem. After that, use mobile odin to flash ff18 one click full wipe version. It won't install the modem so that snafu can work for your benefit. I could say more but it's time for bed for me.
This isn't the case. Agat63 has been working extensively with this error.. It has to do with the zimage file. I Odin every time I update and at this moment I cannot install apps to sd and SB Nation won't install unless I unmount my card. I am glad you've have success with your method, but I'm pretty sure if you install a repacked kernel right now you'll be back to the same situation.

I had this same problem and couldn't find the answer I wanted anywhere. I tried factory reset and formatting the SD but it didn't work. Phone isn't rooted or anything. In the end I unmounted the SD card and then I was able to install the game then mount the SD card and it worked great.
thank you that totally worked

Do you think this is a ROM issue that will be fixed?
I am using stock rooted FI03 with AGAT 5.4 kernel and I cannot move any apps to my external SD card (tells me there is not enough space). I want to try flashing a stock kernel with Mobile Odin to see if this will fix the issue, but I want to make sure there are no consequences of doing this that I am unaware of. I figure I will loose Clockworkmod Recovery but will still be rooted, so I can flash back to AGAT 5.4 or another recovery kernel when I am finished. Anything else I should know?
(If anyone has any other suggestions on getting the phone to move apps to the external SD again, I would love to hear it!)

There are others with that issue as well in this thread that may give you another option without going back to stock.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1879381&page=7
But no, you shouldn't have any issues with what you've suggested and you already listed what you will/won't have.
Either flash with odin as tar or in recovery as zip
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
Well, flashing the stock kernel did not go well for some reason. I flashed the stock FI03 tar with Mobile Odin and got a soft brick, wouldn't get past the Samsung logo. I used Odin to flash back to AGAT 5.4, cleared the triangle and it's working fine.
On the subject of not being able to move any apps to the External SD (reporting no space available), that is finally working again! The kernel flashing I mention above did not fix this issue. What does seem to have fixed this doesn't really make sense to me, but then I don't understand what was causing the issue in the first place...
I was messing around with the Amazon Kindle app, trying to figure out where it was storing covers and books I had downloaded. I downloaded a couple of large free books from the Amazon store and found that it had placed them in the data/data/com.amazon.kindle/files folder. Not wanting them to take up space in my system, I decided to try moving them to the kindle folder on the internal SD (where I also put books I have sideloaded). I found that the Kindle app still accessed them fine here.
Now, at some point after this I happened to notice that Titanium Backup was showing that the Kindle app was on my external SD. I did not think much of this at the time, figuring that moving the 2 books to my internal SD had confused something. But today, before planning on reflashing FI03 to see if it would fix this, I tried moving an app to the External SD (just to be sure it still wasn't working) and it worked fine. Also the Kindle app IS on my external SD card. I have no idea why or how this fixed my issue, but I can think of nothing else I could have done which would have fixed this...
Yesterday, I lost the ability to move to ExtSD again, did nothing I know of to cause this. Made a nandroid, planned to go back to prior nandroid where moving to ExtSD was working, but moving to ExtSD suddenly started working again (on it's own, as far as I know).
The continuing adventures...
I've searched for many hours and read many threads, but can't find anything on how to fix this.
I upgraded to MK3 following Cnexus instructions in this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2538543
Everything appears to be working fine, but the S3 no longer recognizes the External SD card (64GB) after the upgraded,,. It can be read by my PC, and the S3 will mount/read smaller SD cards (I do not have a 32GB, but it mounts 16GB, 4GB and 32MB SD cards just fine).
My CWR recovery will not read external SD either.. and not sure if I should apply the img in the following thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2391616
Internal SD is working fine.. just can't mount the 64GB microSD on my S3.
any help or directional pointers would be great...
thanks..
64GB SD Cards should be formatted to FAT32 for the S3.
Or flash DKP Kernel for ExFat and/or Fat32 64gb support.

Thanks for the reply... but this is not a new 64GB card.. it's been in my S3 and working just fine all of 2013 w thru the MA6, MB1 and MD4 updates.. it's only following Cnexus MK3 upgrade installs that it has stopped working. It won't mount the SD card.. it will hang the S3 when trying to, and eventually ends with a "safe to unmount SD card" notification.
I bought a new 64GB card and it gives the IDENTICAL behavior.. so I don't think it's the card format..
This is on Cnexus Sprint stock rooted MK3 4.3 ROM...
I've always stayed stock, but rooted.
Both cards are exFat format.. I can't format the new card in the S3 because it can't be mounted. So did we lose exFat support in Cnexus stock MK3 ROM or ?? 'cus I definitely had it in the other releases..

I can't ask him directly.. not able to post in dev forums...
UPDATE: googling found this.. http://forums.androidcentral.com/sp...nt-now-after-installing-4-3-mk3-wifi-fix.html
It appears to be related to the wifi fix, but I'm not sure I want to install a custom kernel.. thoughts?

sorry.. bit of a noob on the phone side, but WHICH dkp kernel http://d-h.st/users/decimalman/?fld_id=19563#files should I be loading up and does one do that in the same manner as a normal flash (install on S3, boot to recovery, apply, etc) or is it Odin or ADB ?
I'm on cnexus stock MK3 ROM, so I assume that is touchwiz based?

Yes, you want to flash the TW 4.3 kernel. You flash in recovery. After rebooting your phone will see your extSD again.

The one you want is in the link below. You can place the zip file on the root of your SD Card. Boot into Recovery, wipe caches, and flash.
EDIT :
Edited to avoid issues in the future for members. Instead go directly to decimalman's Kernel Thread. That way you will be assured to have the latest version .

Thanks... With all due respect.. I did read that thread (it's 95 pages long in Chrome) tho' not every last word of it as it went all over the place..and I did do searches within the thread.. I also googled VERY MUCH, but having the issue and knowing what to do to fix it are different (the info indicated a problem with exFat, but no fix in that thread with stock kernel, and I'm reluctant to install custom kernels due to my lack of knowledge in the xda arena), however, the suggested fix to install the new kernel DID work (Thanks decimalman)..
While I root, I don't mess with custom rom's much and stay as stock as possible.
I need a working phone, and can't afford to brick it.
UPDATE: For those relative noobs (like me) one needs to do the following to get your 64GB exFat SD card working....
Follow the steps in this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2541900&highlight=mount+sd+card
Then install this version of Decimlman's kernel - http://d-h.st/Dqe
