hello, I'm rooted and I wanted to change a few of my icons so they are changed in the app drawer. on my ipod touch I used iFile to find the app's folder and overwrite the icon.png, I tried to use Root Explorer to do this but I can't figure out where the apps install to. Could anyone give me a hint? thanks in advance.

System apps would be /system/app
User apps would be /data/app
thank you, sorry for the ignorant reply but all I found were apk's. the apps don't unpack files into a directory when installed? they stay and run from an apk on your phone?

thank you, so if I don't see the icon files in data/data then I'm screwed as far as being able to change it?
Iirc here are the general steps.
Search to get the exact syntax.
Make a copy of the apk.
Rename the copy suffix to .zip from . apk
Extract the image stuff and replace it.
Repack the zip.
Rename it to apk
/system/app/ or sometimes /data/app/ if you modify an app you have to sign it again or the phone won't recognize it
EDIT: Use ninjamorph and just drag and drop the pings in there and here is myn's method of signing
myn's post
ninjamorph thread
im running 1.4 of this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1080999 but i want search anywhere can i get the apk's for it and where do i drop em /system/apps id assume
Why don't you just ask that in the Insertcoin ROM topic? Not really useful to open up a new topic for it.
i dont have 10 posts so i have to post ANYWHERE on the fourm except the section ware it would be most relevent
I see, I understand. Sorry . What do you exactly mean with 'search anywhere'? And which apk's do you mean? Your post is a bit unclear.
the apks are called SearchAnywhere and SearchAnywhereWidget there are also what appear to be data files with the same names also in the /system/app folder ive read elseware these files are rom specific hence my not pulling them from a stock rom
If you have the ROM zip then just explore it using winrar or something. The apk's you're looking for will be in system>app or data>app (if he made a data/app directory). Just drag and drop the apk's into a zipped ROM and flash or use adb to install them.
so i looked in the rom zip no searchanywhere apks inside. Sooooo vmware session later i hav dsixda's kitchen installed in a debian image. Grabbed a shipped rom unpacked it moved the rom.zip to the update folder deodexed the searchanywhere / searchanywherewidget apks. Moved the apks to /system/app with root explorer rebooted and nothing no search anywhere app or widget. Little help here please lads / lasses not like i didnt try much googling has failed to help.
Maybe you can find it in CM7 ROM zip, and take it
put into your system/app and set the permission 3 read 1write
looked in update-cm-7.0.3-vision-signed.zip the apks not there its a htc sence thing bcuz its only present in stock roms ...
Ive been swapping out icons in Launcher Pro using ninjamorph and now I cant find the .apk file anywhere in ninja morph or root explorer. Ive even unistalled it and reinstalled it in hopes it would show up. Does anbody know what happened to it. I had it moved to system/app so i can make changes to it, but its no longer there. its not in data/app either. does anybody know how i can locate this?
just a thought and I could be completely wrong but sometime, for me, apps show up in data/app-private
I was wondering if it was possible to change the name of the Messaging app in Sense based roms to something like "Messages2" Reason i want to do this is because i want to make to have to instances of the application running at once on the phone. This is for people who have phones on metro but dont have root on their phones so they cant run my scripts to get mms. Any help would be appreciated.
I've never done it before so I can't guarantee that something won't go wrong but use a file explorer like Root Explorer and go to /system/app. Scroll down to the messaging application "MMS.apk" long press and rename it
Sent from my Nifty MikG'd up EVO 4g while eatin some Chop Suey.
Hit that thanks button if I managed to help.

You can go decompile the apk and go into strings and change the app name but that will only change the name not the package name. If u want to change that you will have to decompilecthe entire apk then open up all the smali and XML files in note pad++ then do a search for the package name. U can find that in the manifest. Usually com.something.something. do a search and replace for the package name and then replace the .(periods) with a / and replace all in open documents again.
Then go into the smali folder and click on the com folder. If u cluck through it you will see the first "something" that u saw in package name. Change that if u changed it in package name. Click that folder and see the next "something" that u changed and change it as well. Then recompile apk. Don't forget to save the changes u made in notepad++ before u change the folder names.
