It depends upon the firmware u use...

Superoneclick
u may try using super one click to root ur phone...
if u r using original SE Stock Rom( which u most likely to use of not rooted yet)
it doesnot unlock ur boot loader but roots ur phone...
PS: KNOW WHAT U R DOING BEFORE U DO IT...
EVERY THING U DO IS AT UR OWN RISK..
NO ONE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE CAUSED TO UR PHONE OR U.
READ THREADS CAREFULLY BEFORE U PROGRESS...

I rooted my arc with super one click and it worked and is really easy to use, but be aware of what you do!

As I posted in another thread if the firmware is 4.0.0.A.0.42 then Super one lick would do but in my case if it is 4.0.0.A.0.62 then you need to flash your Arc s with Wotan server to 4.0.0.A.0.42 firmware and then use Sony's official unlocker (google it) to be able to root it.

If you have bootloader locked you will need to down grade your firmware to build 42 do this download program called flashtools available on xda.
Download from xda the .42 file use flashtools to load on to phone.
Then root with either zergrush method or from flashtools.
Once rooted use ota to update to latest build 62
if bootloader is unlocked then do as described in previous posts.
All software and tools are available in general or q&a sections.

[Q] Arc Rooting.

HI everyone . i m using xperia arc 2.3.4 and the firmware build number 4.0.2.A.0.62. i would like to root the device.
i came across so many places and they r saying to downgrade to .42 and root. and i din find any further procedure to downgrade. and i m having doubt like do i need to downgrade? or for downgrade , do i need to unlock the bootloader?
please guide me to root my device. i like this Default ROM and i dont want to change.
is there any possiblity to root in .62?
i jus need to remove lot of unwanted apps from the device..
Plz help and Thanks in advance..
Due to the near ICS update, nobody make efforts to find an exploit to root *.62.
So, the only way is downgrade to *.42 with flashtool, root (with flashtool also) than OTA.
Thank you, but can u tel m the procedure??
Sent from my LT15i using XDA
0. Read carefully BEFORE starting the process, if you are doing this for the first time.
1. Download Flashtool. Install it.
2. Download *.42 firmware. Follow instructions given by jlmcr87 in this post. NB. If you have problems connecting your phone with Flashtool, install Sony Gordon Gate drivers manually.

Alternatively, you can flash freely with Wotan, root with Flashtool, then OTA.
Procedure
If you are flashing a ftf for the first time, its better you go by a video...

This gives proper instructions....
Good luck
Thanks a lot friends.. U will try and update.....

Well what order is everything done in? For instance, my R800i is 2.3.3. Do I unlock the bootloader (how?) then upgrade the FW to 2.3.4 and then root?
Is that correct?
Try this

.69 just addresses legal issues with Gmail, just flash .62, there are practically no differences.
Well, when im on .62 with some kernels.. update center shows me that i have a new update but its again .62 and i dont want to install it because it bricks phones wit unlocked bootloader and i dont want to delete update-center app

Use titanium to back up the update center first, then uninstall it.
I don't really understand why you want to keep it though. If your bootloader is unlocked that app is completely useless anyway.

You need to unlock bootloader if you want to flash a real ICS-rom. You can do this on Sony's homepage. http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/
Simply follow the instructions given on Sony's page or search in the development section for unlocking bootloader.
Then you can choose a ICS rom, for example CM9 or this one (but there are much more, simply look in the development section an try some different roms ) and flash it.
Sry my English isn't that good.
