[Q] galaxy s2 tmobile update? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

so my phone is rooted already on beastmod rom remastered, and i just got a notification saying i have a update to be installed from tmobile. im sure it is the 2.3.6 update becuase i dont have that yet, but am i supposed to unroot THEN install the update or can i just update it while its already rooted?
*i have cwm and everything is already backed up, i just need to know what to do with this update*
Thanks in advance for help

You dont want to accept the update running a custom rom. If you have the pro version of titanium backup. Go into it and look for device management and freeze it. Then reboot.

If you like beastmod, why not just flash the beastmod with 2.3.6 base? Info is in THIS thread.

I dont have the pro version, but can i just back up device management and uninstall it?
and how will this effect my phone if i dont update to 2.3.6?
will i still be able to get ICS later on?
Thanks for the quick reply!

I have a different version that has been customized by someone else on this forum.
its more of a ics look.

Wait for the ics update and wait for a ROM to come out with that stock update if you update to ics you will Lose root is my advice

One of the biggest features of 2.3.6 is wifi calling. As long as youre connected to wifi, your calling doesnt come out of your bucket. Its unlimited calling
Sure, you may be able to ICS later on, but ICS for the US SGS2 is a long ways off.
BTW the beastmod 5.0 I linked above is ICS-ish if you like that.

so if i want to update to 2.3.6? how do i do it WHILE staying on this rom i have now? will i have to unroot > update > root again?

I wouldn't there is roms with that update that your using that is the beauty of being rooted you hear everyone saying I can't wait for ics to come out pfffff why when your rooted you can just flash all the roms you want

No don't go back just sit back and wait and enjoy being rooted ics will come out soon and we all can get the update when a stock rom comes out or any other rom

With being rooted and not stock, if you want the features of the 2.3.6 update from T-Mobile you will have to flash a custom ROM that is based in 2.3.6 code. If the version of BeastMod you are running is not based in 2.3.6 code and you need wifi calling, then you need to change ROM's.

I really don't need wifi calling but I don't want device manager to keep giving me a notification to update everytime I connect to wifi
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk

Unrooting and updating would be 100% pointless. Just pay for titanium backup already because it's going to be one of the most useful apps you'll ever use and then free device management to get the update notifications to stop. If you update you'll lose both root and you'll go back to the stock ROM. Your call I suppose.

Dude is right best rooting tool there is !

Do you know if I'll lose data? Also, If I install the update now, is there a way to regain root once I lose it? Thanks.
All I want is root and tether
i dont think they would be stupid enough to push out an update that would force everyone's phone to lose all their apps and settings, unless of course that update was an ICS update.

Install OTA, then download and install busy box and superuser app. Then use Odin to flash rogue stock ek02 kernel/recovery in development section. That should be all you need to do, to gain root.

Check the tread in development that says [dump]
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
first of all the update is not going to flash if you are rooted.
second if somehow you flash it just root like you did the first time.
updates don't wipe data but if you try to flash it on a rooted/non stock phone you are going to have to wipe and reflash anyway.
Hmm, hopefully I get this updated soon. Thanks for the help so far
Ok, I've been reading in the threads mentioned in the posts above and still feel somewhat confused. Apparently in the thread with "dump" in the title, I have to be on a stock EG30 "odexed" rom to flash the EK02 update.
I am currently on stock EG30 "deodexed" rooted rom. So do I need to first revert back to a stock odexed EG30 rom? Then odin the ek02.tar? Then find a root method?
So they've started releasing the OTA?
Got my notice this morning

Man why dont you just update with one of the rooted roms in the forum instead of dealing with all this what should I do and I am confused. All you need is here and if you are rooted already why are you worrying about the OTA..
I believe FOTA apk will stop you from seeing that. There is a disable update script you can run that freezes that(pm disable com.samsung) link here ). I mean way more options than what to do is says I have the update

FYI, although I have seen people post that they re-rooted via SuperOneClick after updating to 2.3.6, I find this highly suspect.. it did not work for me as well as many others and I know what I am doing
Ended up re-rooting via Odin which was successful, but I seriously doubt SuperOneClick will work for anyone...
Also, I suggest a factory reset before or after the update.. there were a few glitches that did not go away until a Factory Reset..
Other than that, have at it! ROM runs superb.

I just rooted and flashed beast mod on my gs2. An hour after using it, T-mobile popped up in my notification tray with a new update. I'm assuming this is 2.3.6 and eventually the dev's will develop or update their roms.

Can I do the T-Mobile update while rooted on a custom rom?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
This is going to be a hot item for most of us with rooted phones. Simply no way of knowing what will happen should we let the update go through. And just to be safe, most of us would prefer to cancel the update.
I followed someone else's advice and used Titanium Backup Pro to:
- wipe data for "Device Manager"
- "freeze" the same application
The nag is gone. I reckon this method should work for everyone with rooted phones.
Otherwise, we'd need to wait to respective ROM teams to release their own patches etc.
TB team should see a nice uptick in app purchases in next few days. The app is well worth it, so if you been on a fence, get it now, $6 well spent.

i am rooted with stock rom and receive the update, np at all. In your case, you have a different rom and not stock. odin probably is the best bet.
bought sgs2 last weekend and rooted using superoneclick and at the end of the day, receive ota update and update my sgs2 and i forgot that i am rooted. i left my phone to finish updating and when i came back, its up and have 2.3.6 uVKL1, did not receive any problem. battery great, wifi calling is there. im just surprised it let me update even though my phone is rooted. btw stock rom, stock kernel just rooted.
I think I'll just wait until somebody comes out with an official sticky solution because I didn't flash any ROM to mine, I just rooted it.... I don't know what to do either... Until someone posts a solution there will be several posts pertaining to this subject

[Q] Help regarding official ICS update for T989

Ok so I'm currently on Gingerbread 2.3.6. My phone is rooted. I AM NOT USING ANY SORT OF ROM. I am on the stock T-mobile rom.
The only programs I have installed on it are Titanium backup. I have performed a backup using nandroid as well as TB.
My question to you all is: Is it safe to update to the OFFICIAL ICS when T-Mo rolls out with it on June 11th?
If so, do I have to unroot? Or can I just run the update when I hook up my phone and open KIES?
Help!
If you're running the stock ROM, you should be able to update without issue. You will almost certainly lose root, though. I'm hoping it only takes a day or so for someone to bang out a rooted, deodexed, etc. stock ICS ROM once the update is released.

I tried connecting my phone to Kies after rooting and it says that a firmware update isn't supported on my device. In order for me to do anything in that regard, I'd have to unroot and then upgrade. If I were you, I'd just wait until Tmo pushes out the ICS update and when someone puts the rooted version out just install it. It will save you the trouble of having to unroot and root again just to get what your phone is already capable of getting via root.
Is there a thread for upgrading from a modded rom, like Juggernaut? Searched, but then again my eyes aren't the greatest. If I need the UVLDE update, how would I go about not bricking during such process? Sorry to intrude, just thought this was the closest thread to ask.

Theres a thread dedicated specifically to flashing the update. That thread covers every possible scenario. Look for the words flash, UVLDE, how to, and update in the titile. Its plain as day.
I think I got answer on my question in here.....
I didn't have to change back to stock recovery to update or unroot.
If on stock just flash the root file again through Odin and your good to go.
If your on a custom GB ROM. Just flash through Odin instead of Kies. Here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1682955
Tmobile T989UVLDE
If coming from a leaked custom ICS ROM. I would use the super wipe and cache wipe. Then flash through Odin.
Of course back up everything with your preferred method.

dont worry
My phone its rooted just stock just to be able to use good apps like titanium addfree etc etc and when i update laat week did not gave me a problem so im thinking if u have stock rom just rooted i dont see a problem plus everyone here at xda wont let u down...trust me
What I would do, is just wait like 2 or 3 more days so someone can come out with a completely stock ICS. That way you don't have to worry about losing root

Do you mean FH13? The reason it isn't taking the update is because it has a custom recovery. The device must have stock recovery, and in my experience, no removed stock apps if running stock w/root.

You can just save the hassle of all this stock recovery if you want... by using this one click (non rooted) update to FH13

You should be able to find the complete one click odin method that does not do a data wipe. So of you upgraded to fh13 and want to go back to ff18. Then find the one click no data wipe and that may do it. If you want tl go back to el29 do the same thing. However going back from ics to without a data wipe could prove faulty. But you could odin back to ff18 then do a titanium back up to back up all apps and data. Then do a complete odin based wipe back to el29 then try and restore via titanium. That may give you the all around solution you guys are looking for. But it's all theoretical have not tried this exact method myself but should work.

thanks, i swooped over to qbking's youtube channel and found it all...thanks everyone
Is FH13 being pushed by Samsung or something? I was wondering why the notification looked a bit different from previous ota's then I noticed the update is coming from the update Samsung software section and not the update firmware like in the past. Just curious since that option never gave us an update before lol

Honestly I love the idea of Samsung pushing the ota's directly. Something about Sprint I just don't trust. Feels like they just sit on their butts most of the time..
