HDMI output problem with bars on sides - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I see some youtube videos where people have the screen stretched but I always have black bars on the sides. I tried 3 TVs they all have bars around, see pictures. How can I fix this? I am not using the official micro hdmi from sony but I don't think that is the reason there are black bars around. I have the latest build available in north america .62.

I also don't use the official hdmi cable but i don't experience any problems. What resolution us that tv screen? Also the phone outputs 720p image, so with the black bars the rest of it will look slightly sharper on a 1080i tv.

Hmm, that's strange for a tv that has 1920x1080 resolution, arc will just output it to 1280x720 which has the same aspect ratio. It's natural for your monitor to have black bars because its aspect ratio is 16:10 compared to arc's 16:9.

[Q] HDMI out resolution

Hi,
is there any chance to change the hdmi out resolution for viewing pictures on the tv? It seems as if the original display resolution of the arc is used via hdmi and it looks just awful...
Thanks for your help
Benjamin
Doesn't anyone of you consider this as a problem?
It is strange, since the TV recognizes the signal as 720p at 60fps...
But I also doub if this is the real resolution... Have to try some 720p videos.
There is nothing wrong with the 720p output. Video's look ok and photo's not that great because the resolution is only 1280x720 instead of the full 8mp (3264x2448). Plus the photo's are stretched on a big screen so it's not that strange they look better on your pc or device...
But as I said it is great for phone mirroring and watching video's. Just don't expect high-res photo viewing

Video Glasses for the I9100...

Hi All!
Soo... Its nearly Christmas an my wife has asked what id like
My immediate reply was a pair of video glasses
I automatically presumed I'd be able to use it with my SGSII (with the HDMI video out n all)
So off I went googl'ing the hell out of them.
I cant seem to find any "directly" compatible so I was just wondering if any one had any ideas on the concept?
I want to be able to use them with my phone and my PS3.
Has any one had first hand experiences with them?
It's a lot of money to invest in something I've never had a play with
Here are a few I've looked at >
http://www.vuzix.com
http://www.videoglasses.org.uk
http://www.zetronix.com/index.php?cPath=26&gclid=CMCT6baW4awCFaEntAodSCgIoQ
http://www.tech-in-mind.com/product01_06_en.html
I don't need the VR option (unless its free lol )
Obviously I'm trying to do this as cheap a possible (For around £250 or less)
and I'm not too fussed if the screen is around the 40-50 inch range (again wouldn't say no to the 80 incher )
Please any advice on the matter would be greatly appreciated.
If it were me, I'd get something decent for Christmas.
The displays you are looking at have resolutions of 640x480 max and will look rubbish as a virtual 80in screen. If you have an HDTV then you'll be disappointed if you put a PS3 through any video glasses IMO. The cheaper end of the range have 320x240 displays and will look even worse.
Not only will VGA or QVGA resolution look very pixelated on an (virtual) 80"-diagonal, but also consider that most footage will need to be downscaled in order to fit these low resolutions. If you downscale 1080p or 720p videos they will look acceptable, but if you downscale PAL footage (720*576) to VGA (640*480) you will get a quite blurry result.
Btw the PS3 can natively output VGA-resolution if it's in NTSC-mode (see http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/3_15/settings/videooutput.html), so it won't have that blurry-effect like downscaled PAL-footage, but it will still look pixelated.
Do get an idea of what to expect, just change your computer's resolution to 640*480 and go close to the screen.

Fair enough. I thought it was all relive to the actual screen size..
I had a friend that hadn't understood he needed to hook his PS3 up to his HD tv with a HDMI cable, The difference was astonishing. not what im after.
Thanks for your help guys. I hold off for now.

[Q] How good is 7 inches for movies?

If I am watching a movie on the couch myself, is the size enough? And how big are the black bars that appear when watching 16:9 movies?
Thanks!
The size will depend on the person. I find this is a good compromise between a small phone and a heavy bigger tablet.
It's perfect in my opinion.

The screen is 16:10, so when watching a 16:9 movie/TV show there will be small black bars. When watching a 2.35:1 anamorphic film, there will be larger black bars. Media apps will have features that zoom in and fill the whole screen, but I wouldn't recommend this as it cuts off part of the image and can drastically change the feel of a scene.

Okay thanks!
I have 10" tablets along with original and new Nexus 7s. It depends on the situation. For watching media, the N7s are great for watching media on the go. In the end, the N7 is a compromise between a phone and a large tablet. When I want something more than my phone, but don't feel like lugging a 10.1" tablet around, I bring an N7.
As for the bars, TV content is true 16:9, so it'll fill the screen save for the small area at the bottom for the task bar. Cinematic aspect ratios will have larger black bars, as they will on any device. Be glad you don't own an iPad. Those things are like using a 1978 Magnavox TV.
Really? Am I going to have to be that guy who makes a "that's what she said joke?"

HAHAHA!
I had the TF101 and when it's time for some videos it's decision time (vs. N7).
Now I have the NookHD+, it's the Nook (9", light enough) for home videos watching.
The N7 leaves the house with me since it fits in my pants' pocket.
The Nook is a great device for the$$$ and already has a few good ROMs.
HD movies will look good. Those black bars do look nice, when using subtitles.

TV Resolution

What resolution is the TV connected to your Fire TV running at?
720p

720p
1080 but I had to scale it a bit because the edges were getting cropped.
I use it on a 1080p tv, but have also a 720p television. I think that 720p should be more compatible that 1080p.

that's normal with tv's.
1080, works awesome.
1080p,had to scale it a bit,like Sc0rp10 did.
1080, only because it's a challenge to find a good 720 at 40+ inches - once I set the fire tv up, I looked and realized that the time for new large sets at 720 looks as if it ended in a war of pixel counts five years or so back.
Thanks everyone. Looks like some people are still on 720p. I'll try to support both.
Since we can only vote once I have a 1080 and 720. I have an awesome older 720 JVC DLP that I plan to use until it melts because of the awesome picture.
1080 also had to scale.
Found out on my box it's got big bold 42" screen size on it, then in smaller print below it, it says "41.9 actual size"
1080p

4K Screen Resolution - real or fake?

I’ve been struggling to get a clear answer from Sony official support team on why when I run a simple screen test by three different applications I get 1920 x 1080 (~403 dpi) or less on my E6883. They claim E6883 screen has 2160 x 3840 pixels (~806 ppi pixel density) resolution. That’s what I though we get on Xperia Z5 Premium. 4K was one of the main reasons I bought this phone. In reality, as the actual screen resolution, I get regular HD.
Here is what they (Sony) say:
“Thank you for contacting Sony Xperia™ Online Support.
The information you requested is presented in the link Agent Argelia provided:
http://blogs.sonymobile.com/2015/10...our-4k-display-technology-questions-answered/
Now to talk a little about your question, the resolution on the screen of the Xperia Z5 premium is 2160 x 3840 pixels (~806 ppi pixel density) meaning that this is what the screen is capable of presenting.
Now as explained in the link above, the full 4k resolution is only used for certain content and applications that are able to use this resolution, This means that in normal operation the phone displays content in HD1080 (Home screen, certain images, settings screens, games, screen captures and certain apps).
Now if you open and app that renders in 4k the app will make full use of the native resolution and you will be presented with full 4K images: Certain video streaming apps, YouTube, Streaming video, VR videos and full 4k videos downloaded from sites or with third party apps that are able to download full 4k video from YouTube.
I myself use a third party app called Tubemate that allows me to download 4k video and then play it with the album app in the phone. (4K videos will have a white "4k" mark in the album preview thumbnail. So far the YouTube app still does not have the capability to show 4K video) Although you can view 4k video from YouTube if you open the website in chrome and then in settings (in chrome) you can request for the Desktop version of the YouTube page. (The resolution settings will then let you choose 4k)”.
I could understand all the playback explanations. However, I am talking about displaying 4K on the screen that is ONLY capable to render in 1920 x 1080 (~403 dpi) according to the testing apps I tried. How is it possible? I start thinking real 4K resolution in terms of DISPLAYING (not recording) is a faked advertisement. I wonder if someone has come across the same issue. Would be glad to hear your thoughts!

this is just like how Apple do their Retina screen. They upscale the software resolution into the real 4k hardware resolution. so yes it is a real 4k screen, but only rendered 2k most of the time. do you think it's such a waste? maybe, but i'd like to see it as a feature rather than a standard. when you have that 4k video, such feature will be usable. Same as the CPU, you only get most of the core working when you need it on gaming.

To put it bluntly, you are wrong in your assessment. It is Lollipop that can't display 4K. The Z5P can and does display 4K content within apps. I could type screeds explaining this in detail, but instead, just watch this video. The display and its 4K aspect is covered from 8 minutes and 15 seconds..

But the Dev had to 'fix' the screen resolution properties for the Z5P in the app (check the most recent changelog). It wasn't being detected via the usual checks. This is what causes some people concern or confusion when they investigate.
If you want, I can make you an app that detects 8K, or 16K, or "insert your desired resolution here" K.
All folk need to remember is that the Z5P does have a 4K resolution, regardless of what apps say

Believe it or not, after watching the video you posted earlier, by Erica Griffin, I had a second thought that left me with a bit of a residual doubt. In that video, the only "evidence" of actual screen testing she said was ADB readings when resolution switched from HD to 4K. However, she never SHOWED those reading. Given that her videos are quite professionally shot, I don't see why not show the actual ADB readings to us. Technically we're only left with her words. I guess we have to take them
I'm actually more concerned with the physical screen; does it really have enough pixels to be considered 4K capable of DISPLAYING a 4K content? Still in doubt...

When in doubt, use microscope or something and count.
4k would be 4 times the amount of pixels compared to a 1080p screen. Dividing the pixels on Z5p with a 1080p screen should give us 4, (3840x2160)/(1920x1080)=4

One could do their own adb and get the readings themselves if you question someones findings. Notice no one has done their own or let alone debunk what she has said. Even MKBHD said in some apps to you see the switch happen. My guess is some apps based on resolution you will see no change at all because the content itself isn't 4K.
Here's some other evidence that the screen is 4K. There's a lot more out there a simple search could find.
