Restoring all green items in Titanium Backup will not restore call logs.
Restoring all items (green and red in the batch) will restore call logs.
I am trying to find the smallest group of red items in the titanium batch restore system data batch that will bring the previously stored call logs into a new flash.
There is at least one red item that is necessary for titanium to successfully restore call logs but I have found it very difficult to figure out what it is.
All green items plus phone 1.0 (which is red) will not restore the call logs.
In a related question, is there a way to list all of the system settings that are stored by Titaniumbackup? That way I might be able to google some and figure out exactly what they are storing.
sms backup+ seems to have an option for backing call logs to gmail. Trying it now, it is far far slower than titaniumbackup is, and if it is possible to just use TB, I'd rather that than send all of my call logs to the cloud rather than storing them on my sd card.
Another question, are there red items that are especially dangerous to restore? Which system settings are the most likely to cause problems such as freezing and force closes?
I'd imagine that it is possible to deselect the worst red settings while keeping the harmless ones and that it would be possible to restore call logs that way.
I havr only read your first sentence. I don't feel like reading all this.
There's an app for that. Called call log bak or something like that. I'm sure if you search the market Google will be good enough to present it to you.

Sorry. I know reading is hard for some people. It's OK.
The apps I've found in the market don't back call logs to the SD card but to your google account. I'd rather find an alternative.
Edit:
Call Logs Backup and Restore does backup to and restore from the sd card. An apology is in order.
I still would rather do it with tb if that's possible. If anyone has any information it would be appreciated.
I was sure just restoring data from logsprovider restored call logs.

That's probably it. Logsprovider is one of the red settings that I've not been checking when restoring to a new rom.
Next flash I'll test it out, see if it gets the call logs and also if it causes any noticeable problems.
Thank you!

I found this thread searching the forums, as I was trying to find a way to restore my call logs using TB after flashing. After restoring the data for logsprovider, the call logs came back. Thank you so much for this info!
migration in titanium backup
Use the migrate option in restoration settings.
Most probably the batch operation skips some system related data.
Correct me if i am wrong.
Another option is SMS backup+. You can find out on the market. It's worked well for me.

I had a ton of text message threads in Handcent.. Just rebooted my phone like I do all the time. And all of a sudden they were gone! I tried to do a data restore from Titanium but that never seems to work for texts
Not the end of the world.. Just curios as to why it happened..
I have read before that sometimes HC will FC if too many messages are present on a thread, I guess this could be qualified as another side effect for a database that has become way too large for HC to handle.
This just happened to me again. After a manual reboot.. ALL of my text messages are gone. They're gone from the stock messaging app too so I'm not sure where the problem lies. I did a Google search and see other people are having this problem as well with just the stock messaging app. Any ideas on a fix? I'm missing some important text messages.... ugh..
Just noticed my saved wireless networks are gone after the reboot as well....

I can't help you with the root cause of the problem - I've never had it happen to me but a couple of friends have (all msgs wiped).
If the messages are missing from Handcent, they will also be missing from the stock app - there's no difference because the messages are (or should be) in the same place and you're just choosing to view/send them with Handcent or the stock app (or another of your choosing).
I CAN, however, help you try to minimize the effects of this happening in the future, as well as keep multiple records of your SMS...
I use two apps, together. The first one, called SMS Backup & Restore, by developer Ritesh Sahu has been a god send for me. You can backup all your messages and restore them, fully - it even gets the conversation threads in the right order by date upon recovery. In addition to manual backups, you can schedule backups.
While backing up is fast, I have to warn you that deleting all current messages (if you have a lot) and restoring them can take time. Restoring them, however, shows you a status bar so you can track its progress while deleting them just says "deleting" and you never know how long it will be. (The same dev also has a sister program for phone call logs - it's lightning fast and just as reliable/effective).
The other app I use is called "SMS Backup" by dev Christoph Studer (if you have trouble finding either of these in the market, look them up by searching for the dev's names). What this app does is work quietly in the background to send / upload your SMS to your Gmail. You can set which label you want to apply to them in Gmail, and then in Gmail set a filter to have them skip right over your inbox. This app also lets you have them appear as read when they are uploaded. All in all, you never even realize it's working and your Gmail will never be the wiser, until you have to refer back to an old SMS - maybe a phone number or address or some other vital info sent to you over text... and you can just go and find it at that time safely recorded in your Gmail.
I hope that helps!
Best of luck. If you're having trouble beyond disappearing texts, you may have other more serious underlying issues...
The problem with the backup apps are obviously I need to run them. Who thinks to do a backup prior to doing nothing more than a reboot?! It's crazy that the phone just deletes them on it's own. Searching on Google shows that this problem is wayyyy too common.

who will do backups on a regular basis? folks that have lost data in the past. the more significant the loss, the better their backup habits.
i do backups. it seems the previous poster does. heck, i bet you start doing backups too.
the more you work with technology the more likely you are to ensure that your important data is at least duplicated. things like pictures, audio, video, text should be considered. this goes for desktops, laptops, netbooks, phones, etc. if it stores data, runs an OS and a users interacts with it...it will fail eventually.
sms backup works quite nicely. i found it after i lost my text messgs once.
I run Titanium every single night by schedule and nandroid every other night. I also have automated backups on all my PC's. But I send and recieve at least 1000 texts a day.. So when my texts randomly delete themselves at 5pm.... A backup made at 2am does me no good for my text messages....
Then modify your backup routine. I your backups won't recover your data...you are using the wrong tool. Sms backup can backup every X hrs.
Trust me..there is always a way to protect data that you find important.
I agree, the app shouldn't erase your data.
you can complain and cry....or...complain and recover.
The choice is solely up to you.
Good luck.
I back up all of my texts to my gmail, makes for great searching!

Where is the option to backup every X hours? I've been through the settingss several times and don't see it
I've been using Handcent for 1.5 years now with no issue but just saw this with a customer who has the Thunderbolt. All messages are gone and she was not on the latest version which is 3.9 now. I've got 3.82 on my Evo so I'm going to leave it there till I know what's going on with this.
I have a full version of Titanium Back up and was wondering if there was a way to back up the call log without backing up all system data, Ive already done it for sms/mms thank you.
Edit: Found a app on the market called Call Logs Backup & Restore and its free but would still like to know if there is a way with Titanium
goto menu, batch, backup system, deselect, now pick which apps u wanna backup
I know that but which file is for call log is what im wondering

Found this thread by searching, but it isn't fully answered. What item in the backup list contains the call log? pete_kolwalski83 suggested that it was obvious, something green, but I don't see it on my phone.
Here are all the items in green:
Accounts
Application Widgets
Bluetooth pairings
[CALENDAR] Calendar Storage 1.1
[USER DICT] com...serdictionary 2.2
[CONTACTS/CALL...tacts Storage 2.2 **** is this it? I can't get the full name, but it sisn't work
Country, Language, Time zone
[VOICEMAIL] Dialer 2.2
[SMS/MMS/APN] Dialer Storage 2.2
[PLAYLISTS] Media Storage 2.2
[SMS/MMS PREFS] Messaging
[WALLPAPER/SETTINGS] Settings 2.2
[SETTINGS/BLUET...tings Storage 2.2
[BOOKMARKS] Web 2.2
Wi-Fi Access Points
By the way, what is the difference between the items in parenthesis and the items that are just green?

Pro Tip: Turn your phone sideways -- Ti Backup will go landscape and show you more of the title.
That said, that should be it. That's the "[Contacts/Calls] Contacts Storage"

The bracketed prefix is just a "nice name" for what the item is. It's only used on certain system items. For example, it lets you know that you want to backup the "Dialer Storage" to get your SMS/MMS messages, and that the "Messaging" app only backs up the prefs for that particular app, not the messages themselves.
Also, running the backup and then long-pressing on the item in question and tapping "Explore" on the menu that shows up can reveal some information to you.
Wow, I can rotate my phone!?!?! Hehe, thanks for the pro tip.
Although, that setting isn't the one that contains the phone log. I just installed a new ROM after backing up all apps and settings. I restored all of the green items, but I don't have a call log. I have my SMS, and my contacts are in my gmail, so they came over when I resynced, but alas, no call log. I sure do wonder where TB has buried that option.
Odd. I've never tried using Ti Backup to restore SMS/MMS/Call Logs -- I always used the free apps by Ritesh Sahu. They've worked for me.
Yeah, I've also always used other backup apps that can save the call log. Funny that TB doesn't seem to be able to do this though, since it can back up everything else.
Or perhaps I am just doing it wrong...
after restoring CONTACTS/CALL, reboot your phone and they will show up.
For sms, restore [SMS/MMS/APN], then reboot. (You may also need to restore [Voicemail] Dialer, but I am not sure though)
I would like to know how to restore my vpn connections.
How would you recover your sms with Titanium Backup?
is that something possible or we have to use something else?
thanks
I was wondering that too. I have the paid version, love it, but I thought I backed up the messages as well. Apperently not though.
Did I miss the setting?

There's a free program in the market that I used to back up and restore my SMS called SMS Backup & Restore (by Ritesh Sahu)
I've had no problems with SMS Backup+ from the market - it stores the texts and MMS to your Gmail and allows for backup and restore. Makes it real simple.
Titanium does backup the SMS data, but I don't remember where it does, and on my myTouch3G 1.2 it was kind of buggy restoring it (though it mostly works). I think it's the data from Dialer Storage 2.2 that houses the SMS/MMS?
Handcent now backups sms/mms
I used to use SMS backup from above post, but it wasnt able to do mms' (at that time) so I tried Mybackuppro (in the market) and it works perfect. plus it does other backups too. I ended up buying it.
I used to have problems with Titanium with sms/mms, but I havent tried any recent versions.
I use MyPhoneExplorer. It syncs everything on your phone to your PC.
this could be outdated info now, but when i used titanium backup to backup sms/mms, it would make a backup of the phone dialer and the associated files from /system. This is not the best way to backup the sms's since a new rom may have made modifications to this.
i recommend sms backup and restore, which is what i use myself. titanium backup is great for apps and app data though!
Sorry for bumping and old thread but this brings up a question. Would any of these be able to create a backup of your SMS/MMS and convert them over to a text file of some sort so you can print up records of them? I remember when I had a Blackberry I used to be able to do this with software I purchased for it. This would be a great feature I would be interested in using. I tried searching for something that discussed this but came up with nothing. Sorry if its been covered before. Thanks in advance.
To back up texts just make a back up of Dialer Storage [SMS/MMS] and restore.

Yes, Something that would convert the backup file into something I would be able to view on a computer. ANy suggestions or ideas on this?
I'd like to put in my vote for SMSBackup+. The restore feature doesn't always work perfectly, but the backup has never failed me. stores it as plain text in your gmail, which is then searcheable.
Love SMS Backup+, saves them to Gmail and can also pull them back to the device as other people have said, works great, no issues!
Whats everyone using? Titanium oe another add?

So use SMS Backup+ as everybody else does.
i use mybackup pro. it does call logs and mms restore. really simple to use too.
Actually guys, Titanium Backup Pro DOES offer it, you guys just don't know which system app to backup.
I use TB to backup and restore between roms, since it take less than 30 seconds, a reboot, and all the messages show up. If I use an app, such as SMS Backup/Restore, it takes a long time compared to TB, but I still back up messages in both apps nonetheless.

You need to be careful using Titanium on System apps. I used to do this, but found that doing so would sometimes break ability to download MMS (Even when moving to newer version of same ROM). Depending on Phone/ROM i use MyBackupPro or SMS Backup & Restore. Usually use MyBackupPro first as it'll do MMS/SMS/Phone Log, but I've had it where on some phones it doesn't restore the timestamp correctly on the new phone. If that's the case, just use it for MMS/Phone Log, and use SMS Backup & Restore for the SMS. It's always worked.

Code:
[SMS/MMS/APN] Phone/Messaging Storage 4.0.x-eng etc.
For call history, if anyone is interested, is
Code:
[CONTACTS/CALLS] Contacts Storage 4.0.x-eng etc

Never happened to me, I've done this since the Samsung Vibrant days and never had a problem unless the Android version was different. Ie, 2.2 vs 2.3
These are the only two system apps I EVER restore btw, I manually configure everything else.

actually, i just did backup from galaxy s to nexus, and i can confirm that all timestamps on sms and mms imported perfectly, mybackup pro, not rooted.
what all are you guys using to migrate your app data from your current phone to the Note 4? Helium has been my go-to for awhile but i wanted to know if there were any other options out there that i should consider too. (moderators forgive me if this is a duplicate topic, i didn't see any in this forum thus far)
I honestly wouldn't even bother transferring app data over unless it is extremely important. I wouldn't want to carry files from an old phone to a new one. Keep it fresh and don't bring over dirty files. May not do anything bad but just my take. Kinda same thing when you wipe data when flashing roms. Dirty flashing can lead to unwanted issues, just as carrying over files from another phone can.
Unless you find a good app to do so. Keep us posted.
thank you. i'm primarily interested in retaining my game data, such as Subway Surfers, Clumsy Ninja, Angry Birds, etc, where it's taken awhile to level up and i would hate to start fresh. i also always transfer text messages and call logs as well. i use SMS Backup/Restore for my texts, Helium for system settings and other app data, and Verizon Cloud for my call logs. i never rooted the S5, been so busy with work i haven't had time to look into tinkering with those settings, so i know that Titanium Backup would not be an option.
Good question. . . I have used Titatnium Backup in the past problem there however is root on N4.
What tu3218 does make sense as well unless you had some way to guarantee or verify it wasn't going to create a bunch of junk in directories which shouldn't exist.
If someone has a good solution I would like to hear it as well. I have three 2-step verify apps which would be nice to just transfer rather than removing and adding manually.
Helium
I bought the full version of Helium and that will transfer all save game data. I downloaded all my apps fresh from the play store after I activated the note. I then used Helium to restore a backup of the games I wanted to keep my save data on.
I also used reware my backup pro to restore my call logs, small, and mms message database.

+1 - Righ on cbdudek. That is exactly how I would do it.
* My backup will restore - call logs, contacts, sms, mms etc..
* Helium to restore games' backup
*Not recommend to restore system settings, or old apps. Download fresh from play store. The theory is every time you move into a new house, you need to do a good clean up and throw out all the junks....
appreciate it everyone. about to give Helium a go and see what happens. rather than restoring all of my app data, i only backed up the game data this time around, so we will see how that goes. i'll let you all know in the morning what happens. how do you like your Note 4's thus far?
i never use titanium or any auto backup method to transfer files to a new fone. it always causes tiny little glitches here and there. Best thing to do is start fresh. For contacts and calendar its all on my GMAIL. for text messages I use GO SMS so i can backup and restore within that app no problems. I use nova launcher so i can backup my home screen and all my other screens and restore it with nova no issues. beyond that its all manual input. I have a few remote dvr viewing apps and i configure all those again manually as well as all my mail settings and what not.
Helium works best without root and you can migrate the app over wifi.
