Im going to be moving to spain here pretty soon for 9 months and am curious if anyone knows anything about plans and usage over there. I haven't seen a single carrier that offers unlimited texting (most are 9c per text). Considering I text like a mad man that's not gonna work.
Any experience here?

Where are you moving from?
Where are you going to be texting the most?
If you are from the US or Canada, the BEST/Cheapest thing to do before moving would be: Get a Google Voice number, and give all of your friends that number.... or transfer your soon-to-be dormant cell number that everyone has to Google Voice... then find a texting plan there (probably a prepaid plan) for all your Spanish friends.
This way, you can continue to text all your US and Canada friends for free on google voice, and then have local texting in Spain for whatever the Spanish rates are. If you get yourself "GrooveIP" or another VOiP app, you can also call US and Canada numbers for free if you have a good data or wifi connection.

That's actually a really good idea, I have a Google Voice number but I had forgotten I can port my current number to GV. I was planning on using WhatsApp for keeping in contact with home but GV is way better. Thanks for the idea!
I'm moving from California to Madrid, although it was a great idea, the phone number wasn't really my main concern. My biggest problem as of now is finding out if spain has a (preferably prepaid) plan that has unltd texting, much like my tmobile prepaid does now.
I know there are TONS of carriers out in Madrid which makes searching a little bit hard, which is why I thought I'd ask you guys
also, porting my number to GV will eliminate MMS abilities right?

Unfortunately at this time, yes.
However friends can just use your email to send stuff to.

There's movistar (telefonica), orange and vodafone. Those are the main ones. There are also smaller ones but text and data is really expensive in Spain.
Oh and avoid vodafone at all costs.

Not entirely true. You can receive picture mail from Google voice but it just gets forwarded to Gmail. They don't need to send to Gmail unless they want to. As far as sending yea you can't through Google voice. I hope that made sense.
There are plans with 350 SMS/month (to Spain), data (500MB at HDSPA+ speed, limited at 2G after that) and calls (350min) for 40€.
But if you want cheaper plans you must consider:
-Pepephone 651MB at 6'90€ + calls at 2'7 c€/min (Vodafone based)
-Simyo 650MB at 6'85€ + calls at 3 c€/min (Orange based)
Spain has a very good coverage of 3G data, nobody uses SMS here now. Whatsapp its recommended.

Perfect, exactly the kind of response I was looking for. So nobody texts there meaning everybody calls or everybody uses whatsapp?

Yes, that is correct.
i wish the US was like that, US carriers suck, they only pay attention to extremely large markets and then they over charge for the stupidest things.

wow, great response ****.
Geez, first things first:
This belongs in Q/A
Ok, now to the answers:
1. I am sure you meant the SIM card, and yes, everything will work fine. All your info is stored on the SIM.
2. You do not need data for texting, but you will need it on the iPhone. AT&T Will add it to your account, unless you have a prepaid account.
Just so you know. Hope I helped.
I've no idea.

Sorry but no, any smartphone on AT&T's network requires a data plan, whether you pay full retail, or not and AT&T detects the devices IMEI number, you will be prompted by sms to add a smartphone data plan. If you choose to ignore this message, AT&T will automatically add the lowest 200MB/$15 to your account within a few days.
At&T will also ban the IMEI if you refuse, The reason they do this is because people been known to unlock the iphone and go change the APN settings to proxy server, to steal internet and also use tethering to get free internet to the computer.

I'm pretty sure its noted in the terms and conditions, which you would have to agree to in order to use AT&Ts service. So yes, its legal.

dang, if that is true, what would I do once they get to buy tmobile...
i don't think ATT has unlimited data on the iphone anymore, 2 gigs is the max.
You do not need data for texting ( though you can text and call using data to cut on bills ) .
Has anyone successfully made a wifi call from abroad into the US?
Has anyone gotten the reg09:missing 911 Emergency location information even though all the information is correct on ur tmo account under customer profile?
Errors out of country, but works fine in US.
I've contacted tmo several times noone can help.
Sooooo if this is truely a bug on there end that they have no explanation for, and we are not receiving the services we expected when buying this phone....isn't this grounds for an exchange of handsets?
Yours thoughts on all of this...

Wifi Calling is considered a FREE FEATURE of certain phones. That feature is subject to technological restrictions which, at their discretion, T-Mobile may or may not make accommodation for. If the lack of wifi calling does not impede other features of the phone, including making calls on a standard network while abroad, then you have no grounds for your complaint. T-Mobile already makes it pretty easy to use your device while out of the country by allowing you to request and receive your carrier unlock code with a simple call to customer service. You can then use a different sim card and continue to make standard network calls.
My wife has called me from the Philippines a couple of times over the last week on her sg2 over WiFi. The trick is you need a pretty good bandwidth connection which, depending where you are, may be hard to find.

I've used in several different countries both with my old Nexus One and the new GS2. Other than good wifi connection, make sure your tmobile SIM card is registered on the network first. It won't work if you have a different SIM card in there or your phone is on airplane mode or something.
Would it possible to hack this device for phone calls?
Does it have the needed hardware/radio for traditional cellular calling (not voip or volte)?
A friend of mine told me that At&t will assign you a number with your SIM, would they try to roadblock you from using it to make calls?
Just wondering if anyone else is interested in attempting this.
mine is hk lte version and it supports phone call out of the box. So isn't at&t's?

I keep asking the same questions, I know when Samsung announced the Note 8.0s they promised ATT customers a converged phone and Tablet, the "Phablet" as they so mwere marketing it, then I think when ATT and Samsung saw how much they were going to lose in revenue from people doing away with redundant "iDevices" they paniced and screwed over the customers and removed the dialer from the firmware.

I'm sure someone here could make it work as far as the device goes, but At&t holds the power in the end. Their model doesn't come with a phone plan, just a data plan. This is likely where it would fail.
could you edit your post title and specify the model number since there is multiple LTE version of the Note 8 please.
hi ,
i dont own one , yet , but my other galaxy devices i have google voice installed and then talkatone setup and it can make and recieve calls via google voice number , its voip but it works over data and wifi , so you can use your google voice number just like a normal cell number ,
check it out , i know its not the exact solution you were looking for but it does work , i cut my bill in half over 65$ taken off by lowering my minuets , forwarding all incoming calls to my google voice, and taking off text messages , you still need minuets though , the forwarding costs 1 min per call and someones ALWAYS gonna call your previous number until you get everything moved to GV
Hi
Just upgraded from a Note 8 4G to a Galaxy S 10.5 LTE ( might I add this is the Octa-Core version and not a 2.3 Quadcore )
Anyway...my number has been transferred to the new sim as mine was a bit butchered when I used it in a micro sim slot and I get Data SMS and no Calls as of yet....there may be a longer delay in getting voice calls from and too this device but thought I would ask if anyone knows if this is blocked on purpose.
It has to be thee best screen ive ever seen plus 8 cores and 3 gig ram....fantastic spec!!! but I need it to make calls or it has to go back
Can anyone shed any light on this
if my SMS has been enabled does this mean Voice calls should have been, my tarrif specifies 0 minutes but surely I could clock up a small bill each month if i needed to make some calls..even the guys in the o2 shop said it will make calls??
Please help as i am loving this tablet!!!
Thanks
Lee
This must have something to do with your carrier. I have a Tab S 10.5 LTE (in Australia) and it makes calls perfectly. Take it in to O2 and ask them why it's not working.
I'm also on O2 with the same issue.
From what someone told me in another thread. It's down to the tariff, not the Tablet. O2 just haven't enabled calls for the sim.

Mines going back tomorow...they told me in shop it would make calls....
Also what o2 do is split your bill so an amount pays for your device and the other amount pays for your tarrif....if they cant change this its going back
gutted!!
Calling, MMS, and data use require the tablet to be registered on a smartphone plan; at least here in the U.S. Cheaper "tablet" plans only support data.
You could always contact them in the morning and get calls enabled.
You won't get no voice calls on o2 tablet contracts. Text and Internet only.
How are those with the LTE version able to make and receive phone calls in a "standalone" like version. Sprint agent claims that is impossible with this watch, but yet charges an arm and a leg to send "texts and receive data" WTH is that?

I found out just yesterday that Sprint doesn't support the ability to receive calls and text to the watch while away from your phone. Im a bit confused as to why they would 1) Sell me thw watch when that feature was the ONLY reason I was interested in purchasing this thing and 2) then sell me a service plan for a feature they dont even support. Extremely upsetting. The standalone feature does allow me to listen to music to Spotify using only the watch but not sure that alone is worth an extra monthly cost.
I'll be cancelling the service and sticking to my Garmin for fitness tracker and maybe using the Samsung as a daily watch.

I can make and receive calls and send texts in "standalone" mode on the lte version in the uk. When you buy the phone through your operator EE (has to be in uk) you gey unlimited calls/text and data on the phone

if the lte version of the watch is properly activated on the carriers side then calls can be done when phone is off. texts and emails dont work.
if phone is on AND connected remotely, then texts and emails work.
this is a carrier gimmick to force you to have 2 plans. because everything would work with just the watch. if you can brows the internet in standalone mode then emails should work aswell. if you can make and receive phone calls then texts should also work in stand alone mode as well. just an other proof on how greedy carriers are.
also never listen to what they say. 60% of the time they give you false information and miss guide clients.

but i mean if you only have a watch and think of using it standalone LTE, you cant do anything. you need a phone on the same provider to activate the line on the watch. plus if no phone, no texts and emails....
I don't believe that to be true with this plan. With their "Digits" plan, yes, but this one no. I have heard that you can get it activated in the store using the reps phone, then it works just fine. I will try to verify it this weekend and report back.

so lets say u reset your watch by mistake and the rep got fired or is on vacation, u have a brick on your wrist? ( not to mention ull get their calls and texts and emails)
of course u can probably still use bluetooth but ull never get that number/line reactivated. im pretty sure they made the watch and phone be an obligatory tether with the carrier if u want to use LTE. its evil.
No the watch just needs to get the TMo settings, then works independently. If you have a TMo phone you can do it yourself.

yeah of course if you have both services on your account. but was just putting out there if you just buy a galaxy watch LTE and want to use it stand alone, ure screwed.
I don't know what you guys are talking about with tmo, I just got the the Galaxy Watch (R805U) from them and with or with out the phone, it acts the same. Can email, call, text, browse and such.
The way it works is the watch has a sim card (Called a esim. They function the exact same as normal sim card except it's a chip instead of a card.) It provides the LTE functions of the phone. Next it gets a Paired Digits number so it links both the devices numbers together so when one rings, they both ring even though they have their own number.
From the tmo website
All your existing T-Mobile numbers are now DIGITS lines. You can use them for free on any compatible internet-connected device via the DIGITS app or on phones with the DIGITS functionality built in.

Yes, that's for T-Mobile. My watch is on Sprint and paying $15 to receive only stand-alone texts is outrageous. They continue to say that the watch needs a software update that provides VoLTE, but nobody seems to know when that will, IF EVER, happen.
stand alone activation
can the standalone feature be activated by a non-samsung phone? I currently purchased the watch and is activated by the carrier aswell (vodafone numbersync) but the app is telling me that my phone is not compatible with the watch.
I'm using mate 20 pro btw.
