So I'm off to Costa Rica for spring break and I was wonder what would be the best thing to do with my phone. I want to take it with me but I also don't want to get international charges. From what I know, I'm fairly certain there is no possible way to get the E4GT on an international plan for "free".
I was considering calling Sprint to have them deactivate my phone for that time but if there's a way to spare the trouble of deactivating and reactivating I'd love to hear it.
I had an idea that it could be possible to develop a modem that completely disabled all signals other than GPS wifi and Bluetooth.
What is my best option? Just looking for a surefire way to avoid international charges, preferably without calling Sprint.
Thanks in advance everyone!

It's entirely possible there is not a cdma carrier in Costa Rica , so you may not get coverage anyways you can always go into settings and turn off international roaming also

If by some little chance you do get some kind of service there, wouldn't just turning off 3G data and not making phone calls be the same thing...?
Epic 4G Touch perfected by Calk!
You could just esn swap and old phone you have laying around, if it is a feature phone you can even save by removing the premium data option.
Btw if you are driving around CR the best maps are made by a local company for garmin gps units, both mobile and standalone. Don't expect something like google maps to be useful
navsatcr.com
These guys provide the maps for the gps units you get from the car rental companies in CR.
if you think you will be near a wi fi connection, install GrooveIp on the phone and use that to make free phone calls; it should work there as well, since the calls go through the internet,,
I don't plan on using my phone for calls, just wifi, games, and probably flashing roms lol. Gotta get my fix some how!
Anyway, turning off international roam should work, thanks everyone!

I don't mean to hijack this thread but I was just going to make a question about this very same topic myself until I found this in search.
Going to Bermuda later this year, but wanted to take my E4GT with me just for music/alarms. There are some places that offer free wifi around Bermuda I read, so I was hoping to use it while I'm there.
I called up Sprint & they gave me an International rate (expensive, $1.96 a minute!), that would be safe then to assume, that there would be no Sprint signal down there and if I unchecked everything in the Roaming section under "Wireless and Networks," I should be good?
I don't want to act like a worried nellie but just want to keep my chances of coming home to a "surprise" from Sprint at a minimum as it's the first time I'll be going abroad with a smartphone.
Also, are there any other alternatives to Groove IP that are free?
ETA: Just downloaded Groove IP Lite, any one ever tried it?
Thanks.
Just got back from Costa Rica and I kept airplane mode on the whole time. No surprises yet so I believe that Airplane mode worked. On top of the fact that I don't believe they have any radios out there that Sprint phones are even capable of roaming on. Ill report back if anything changes!
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
Just sharin' my experiences - I've taken Sprint devices to Europe (which only work in Wi-Fi only) but I'll focus mainly on my trips to Japan as CDMA does work there. When I get there I usually turn the airplane mode on and wi-fi on (it will allow this if you didn't know.) When I know I need to make calls I turn data off and sync off just to be safe. Haven't had any surprise roaming charges yet in several years and often is cheaper than renting a phone - if you don't use it much.
This worked so good that I even had visitors from Japan use the same process and use wi-fi only. They were glad they did... especially now that we all use apps like Skype and Heytell.

You can do that and still use google voice with your sprint number so if your bro gets disciplined and has a google voice he can keep on texting like it was never on hold he just has to be on a computer all the time or on wifi
FYI, my wife just went to El Salvador... I just hopped on Ebay and bought her a cheap ($20) GSM phone and she bought a $10 prepaid SIM when she got there from Claro. I didn't want her to take her E4GT there since it'd be so expensive to replace if she got 'jacked.

Ok... long story short, tmobile slowed my 4G the first month I got my G2 because I exceeded 5GB... that's BS if u ask me consider I pay for unlimitied... but its whatever. Next billing cycle rolls around, and my 4G is still at the pace of a snail. SpeedTest app is testing in @ a BLAZING speed of 0.03-0.05mbps with full 4G connection. Got a new sim, now they are sending me a new G2. Works for me ...
Anyway... they want my old G2 and I feel as though if they receive a phone all modded up they may say... "woah, he screwed his phone up himself..." so right now I'm rooted, s-off, running gingermex rom, updated radio and kernel... which was all easy to do... but getting back to stock seems a little more intricate. Maybe somebody knows what's wrong with my device since t-mobile is no longer slowing my speeds.. and yet they are still slow. Tried multiple radios, no success.. any input here on either matter will be greatly appreciated! Thanks

You don't need a new phone, you should have just wiped the throttle data and it would have been fine. Throttling is initiated on the PHONE side.

Usually on phone replacements they send you the new one and you ship back the old with attached packing slips. So if that's the case then they can't do much about it. They want the old one to refurbish and make an extra bit of change

They would void is warranty for future replacements.
Best thing to do is drop that phone in water for an hour than put it in the shipping package.
They said the main thing for me getting the g2 replaced was that everything worked, no damage.. so no water lol. I wanna know how to do the "wipe throttle data" that was previously mentioned.

Also, I don't believe there is currently a working method.

Maybe the throttle folder is there simply because you have gone over in the past - they might not actually be throttling your data. I would recommend getting mobile signal widget and going to somewhere with HSPA+ data rates, and then doing several speed tests with various applications.
If you still have the issue, you probably should talk with customer service. If you can't get it resolved, I hate to say it, but you may want to switch carriers.
You could also try getting ahold of people on XDA that have worked on removing evidence of throttling on the phone side.
Good luck man! Sorry to hear you're still having the issue. This 5GB cap is ridiculous - they should not be able to call this "unlimited data."
I have honestly been considering switching carriers. I have already told them I will most likely cancel, and refuse to pay 200 to do so if I choose. Customer service has been completely wretched. I know it sounds kind of like a conspiracy or something, but I have called like 13 times today and maybe 8 of the calls were "dropped"... IMO they are hanging up on me because they can't provide any help! Numerous of the reps were supervisors, too! I have never had a problem with tmo and this is like bad... I can't understand them they all sound like the same indian woman changing her name every time she answers lol...
People are saying in older threads that this happens with the services.jar that is in root/system/framework... anybody have any more ideas? Relatively desperate..lol

Wifi Calling is considered a FREE FEATURE of certain phones. That feature is subject to technological restrictions which, at their discretion, T-Mobile may or may not make accommodation for. If the lack of wifi calling does not impede other features of the phone, including making calls on a standard network while abroad, then you have no grounds for your complaint. T-Mobile already makes it pretty easy to use your device while out of the country by allowing you to request and receive your carrier unlock code with a simple call to customer service. You can then use a different sim card and continue to make standard network calls.
My wife has called me from the Philippines a couple of times over the last week on her sg2 over WiFi. The trick is you need a pretty good bandwidth connection which, depending where you are, may be hard to find.

I've used in several different countries both with my old Nexus One and the new GS2. Other than good wifi connection, make sure your tmobile SIM card is registered on the network first. It won't work if you have a different SIM card in there or your phone is on airplane mode or something.

Don't know, but, if the person has not deleted your account from the phone you could send an email to yourself and either offer a reward for the return and tell him you are about to lock it and make it unusable.
You can also play store on your computer and install Wheres My Droid and hope he puts your sim back in for a few minutes!
Then on someone other mobile phone send your phone a txt of
WMD GPS
it will send back the location
See the website for other comands you can send to it.
Can't hurt to try and hope he puts the sim back in.
Definitely install it on your phone if you get it back, or your next phone.
It can send you the new number if they change the sim!
Good luck! Hope it works out!

Anyways go and take a look on androidlost.com for more info.

Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
No, it will not work if your account is no longer on the phone.
I would suggest you call your carrier and ask if they can locate the phone by IMEI + GPS/etc - that's about your only hope (and I don't know if they'd do it, or if they'd block the IMEI, or if they'll only do that if you have insurance, et cetera). Also, 4 weeks is getting a bit late, unfortunately.

Agree. When my wife lost her phone I asked carrier about this, and their answer was a straight "Sorry, we can't do that". I wish there's an app out there that tied the IMEI to a GPS tracker that's made available for consumer use, though that in itself can probably cause a different issue altogether.

Hmmm. Sometimes, what fixes it for me is to just reboot the phone.
Otherwise, sounds like something didn't flash over correctly. I always try and make sure that when flashing, I check the log and see that its successful / complete. If not, you'll end up with issues.
One issue I had was my phone number wasn't showing up when going to About Phone Status in Settings. It only showed the last four numbers. Reflashing worked fine for me.
And other thing. Did you follow the instructions about going the web on the gusto 2 first? I had to actually pick a website and try to open it.
Good luck!

You didn't write something correctly or missed a step. dial *228 on your phone. It may not let you dial the one or the two so just hang out and it will program your phone for you also then write the 53000 prl. I promise that if you follow the video exactly you will get 3g data unless you live somewhere that doesn't have 3g data.
I also want to touch on vipers comment about getting locked out of service. I'm constantly saying this but I'll say it again. I've been on verizon prepaid myself for over a year now. I'm currently on the 35 dollar plan. I haven't had any problems with them at all. I've also flashed several of my friends phones to VP and they haven't had any problems except for one guy every time he gets drunk the next day I have to rewrite his aaa and ha password (still can't figure that out) but no one has lost their account.
What do I think is happening to these accounts? Nothing I believe these individuals are people/businesses who get paid to flash phones and don't want the secrets out there and this is probably killing there business. People get concerned by problems and start to wonder about that. For instance a few years ago I was working for this small cell phone flashing company and flashing to boost started to kick off. Well we didn't have everything set up like this other company did so when someone came in we had this rumor going on that this guy who had his cell phone since they first came out, lost his number because boost found out and then he went to their shop and threw brick through their window.
Saying somthing like that to a customer we already had wasn't really targeted to him\her. But to any friends of theirs that questioned them about their service believe it or not but people like to talk. Especially about bricks being thrown through windows. I didn't stay long with that company but it's an example.

I was I've through all of your posts (takes about ten minutes) and your xda repoire at first is to just ask a bunch of questions and then you started to sell yourself as a cell phone flasher. Then you found out how to pull aaa keys and refused to tell anyone and blamed it on cdma workshop not being free. You can still show the process and I'm calling you out on that and the fact your trying to scare people into not going to verizon prepaid. You may fool some people but you don't fool me.
Hmm.. I must have misunderstood the *228 thing in the video. But anyways. Now that I did *228 thing, I'm stuck with the roaming indicator. Does that matter? I plan on flashing another rom and hope it changes it. Also, how does doing *228 affect the phone? It was working fine earlier and I even clocked 3G speeds at 2.7mbps.
Thanks

I was I've through all of your posts (takes about ten minutes) and your xda repoire at first is to just ask a bunch of questions and then you started to sell yourself as a cell phone flasher. Then you found out how to pull aaa keys and refused to tell anyone and blamed it on cdma workshop not being free. You can still show the process and I'm calling you out on that and the fact your trying to scare people into not going to verizon prepaid. You may fool some people but you don't fool me.

You can call me out all you want, I have done several phones while members watched and seen the keys pulled in. I have not tried in no way to scare people from verizon prepaid. I flash to them myself, but you are dead wrong if you do not think that a account will need to be reathenicated sometimes. I have nothing to prove to you but only offered a suggestion to the guy having issues (now my comment was seen that way by you, I have no idea) . Anyways good luck to you in your venture as I am way above arguing this with you. No one is fooling anyone here but you..... I don't need to sell myself, proof is in the pudding bro.......

I know your gonna read this because curiousity will bring you back to see my rebuttal. It's how life works. I'm not saying that you can't pull the aaa keys what I'm saying is that you refuse to share the knowledge of how to do it. You made a thread to talk about it but really I believe that you made that thread to make a profit. There is free software to record your screen and there is also hacked software for camtasia there is no excuse not to share especially on xda.
You probably won't respond because you don't want to share this info and pretending like you didn't see this post is probably better than trying to come up with an excuse because there isn't one.
I reflashed the phone again slowly making sure I follow each step of the video and also did the *228 on the phone. After I disable Wifi, I still get "No network connection. No Signal found for mobile networks."
At first I had the LG2 modem and it keep on prompting for a sim card, so I updated it to LJ7. Still no 3G and I keep on getting the roaming message.
I do noticed however when I got to Settings, About device, Status:
Network = Sprint (shouldn't this be Verizon?)
Mobile network type: 1xRTT:6 (CDMA)
User name = [email protected] (shouldn't this be something like my telephone # @vzw.com?)
Mobile network state = disconnected (???)
IMEI =Old one from Sprint (shouldn't this be my Verizon Gusto 2 IMEI?)
Thanks guys for all your help.
I flashed the MOAR rom and kept LG2 modem. Did you download and flash rhe correft PRL? I also went out for a drive to make ure 3G would appear. I would recommend you do the same and see if it helps.

OK, let me try to use the MOAR rom instead. The LG2 modem keeps on asking for a sim card. Sprint is CDMA, so hence no sim card.
I'm using the LJ7_STOCK_WITH_COUNT_RESET16 rom and the pageplus_sprint_phones_only_no_roaming_indicator_53000.prl

Hmmm.. I never had a problem with the Sim request. From my understanding, you probably still have the Mobile Network set to LTE. That should be the only reason why it's looking for a Sim Card.
I also noticed a different PRL after activating on Verizon.
Good Luck!

Are you sure need to be on LG2? Everytime I flash that modem I get that symbol on the left (sim i think) and no data connection. Shouldn't LJ7 modem work?
Ok so I spent an hour this morning talking to technical support for Straight Talk and they did everything on their end to help with this. For some reason my phone has stopped connecting to the networks. I have full bars, but no data symbols. If I try to make a call it says "Not registered on network". My service is active and I have another week until I need to refill. APN settings are set up correctly, mobile data enabled, airplane mode off, etc. I tried restarting the phone, pulling the battery, pulling the sim card, with no avail. I can't figure out what's going on but I'm pretty sure it's the phone causing the issue. I've come to the xda community for help in this time of great turmoil!
Anyway, here's my phone info:
Phone: SGH-T889
Rom: Android 4.3 Conch Republic Edition 3D
Bootloader/Baseband/PDA: T889UVUCMK7
Fresh wipe and rom install.
Using Straight Talk BYOP service.
If anyone has suggestions on what might be the problem let me know! If I need to add more info about the phone let me know. Everything was working fine before the weekend then all of a sudden it took a crap on me. Thanks guys
Did you buy the phone new. If not, have you checked the imei against tmobile's blacklist?
Unfortunately I bought it off someone on Craigslist a long time ago and it just now got blacklisted. Learned all about those crappy details today. Sucks... but I got good use from the phone. I guess I need to resell it as a blacklisted phone if anyone will actually take it. Gaaahhh!
Thanks for the response.
