im confused - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i have a arc on .62 and have been looking around this site and others for the last couple of days
1) so from what i under stand i have 2 options in rooting this phone downgrade to .48 or flash a pre rooted rom on it like the Pre-rooted_LT15i_4.0.2.A.0.62_Generic Global World (.img file) i found in one of the posts on this site? (i dont see the point of downgrading if i can flash the same rom thats rooted)
2) i have downloaded the flash tool and the above rom but how do i use it?
3) how do i have to boot the phone up to flash the rom?
my last 2 phones (wildfire and San Francisco) seemed easy compared to this one im so confused and dont wanna mess it up please help me

Hey there...
To flash it you're going to need to use fastboot... Have you unlocked the bootloader??? If so, then use fastboot from the android SDK tools to flash it... On the post you downloaded the img file must have the installation guide... If not then you're going to need to do it!!!
But I think your first step should be to read this post very carefully... Then you start playing around with your phone... It's long, but very complete...
Cheers!!!

this should help

unlocked the bootloader? i found some drivers and the flashtool sees the phone in fastboot dose this mean the bootloader is unlocked? if not how do i know if it is unlocked? i got the phone 2nd hand and have been told it has had a couple of updates

Updates... lol... It probably IS unlocked then... But to make sure, check this post...
Since you're new in the Xperia line, read both the thread I sent on my first message and the one kenooi1984 sent... They are both great to get you introduced to your phone's full capabilities...
Cheers...

[Q] A few questions about MK16, Roms, etc.

Sorry, I know this is the arc forum, but as there is no mk16 forum, I saw that usually people post pro development's in arc's forums.
I bought an used mk16 with the 4.0.1.a.0.283 firm, and the bootloader unlockable as explained in this link the SE website.
I installed Android SDK, JDK, PC companion, etc. I was unable to install the fastboot drivers until I found someones in SE website and now it seems to be OK (blue light if I connect the phone (turned off) to the computer while holding menu key)
After that, I configured my phone to enable USB debugging. Then I installed flashtool, and I tried to root the phone with it. It worked! (I didn't expect it to work, because I saw a few post with scripts, etc. to root the phone...)
So...
- Now I am with that firmware, rooted. Wich rootable firmware do you recommend me to flash to my phone? I always loved cyanogenmod, but I don't know if there is problems with the freexperia releases (like bad quality in camera picture, low volume, etc.)
- What is the baseband? I have one ending in 49.
- What are the requirements to install clockworkmod recovery? I love this recovery to do my nand backups, etc. Do i need to unlock bootloader to this? Is there any chance to lock again the bootloader? You know, for warranty things.
- Do you have ny list of what apks are secure to erase from /system/app? For example, I don need the moxier pro, let's golf, etc.
I suppose that those questions have been answered before, but without the mk16 forum, searching that info is quite impossible...
Thanks in advance.

Xperia Pro has a very few roms for now.The famous CM7 & CM9 are available for Xperia Pro.I guess,MIUI is also available(not sure). But,You must unlock your bootloader in order to install these roms.Rooted phone is not enough to install these roms.Atleast not yet. And rest assured, there is not drawback regarding camera and volume.Different users have different taste, many like it and many dont. But the fact is they are closely equal.
Basebands are well explained by a XDA member in the following post, please do take a look at it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1462360
For CWM, you only need a rooted phone. And the easiest way to install CWM on locked-bootloader Xperia 2011 device is by using this beautiful app from the following link.Go check it out

For relocking bootloader,i haven't come across any thread which claims to relock Xperia Pro's bootloader. But yes, relocking Xperia Arc's bootloader is poosible. You can give it a try but I'm not sure if it would work on Xperia Pro or not. Here is the link:

Here again,we have a the list of system apks with their descriptions for Xperia Arc's firmware.I assume that the Xperia Pro Has Almost the same System Apks with it so the list for Xperia Arc would also imply for Xperia Pro as well. Here is the link:

PS: Welcome To XDA
Thank you very much for all that information and the wellcome.
I can execute commands like "fastboot.exe -i 0x0fce getvar version" or "fastboot.exe devices" while in fastboot mode, so I assume that's OK.
But in the SE website they are very insistent about voiding warranty depending of blablabla. My phone is an unlocked (SIM free) from fabric one. I understand it will void the warranty if the phone would be form Vodafone (for example), but not mine... Do you know anything about this?
Do you recommend me any official rom? maybe the .42 one?
Now I have clear everything about the baseband, thanks.
That CWM apps you linked say to me (downloades form market) that MK16i is not supported by the app
I will take a look at that APK list, but first I want to be able do a NAND backup before starting to remove apks
Thanks again.

See, Unlocked phone means the phone is SIM free,i.e you can use any carrier SIM in your phone. But, Unlocked-Bootloader is a different thing. When you unlock bootloader, then you are free to flash any ROM which is compatible with your phone.Unlocking Bootloader voids warranty and that is what the SE website is trying to say.
I would recommend you to update your phone to the official .42 fimware version because it has many new features when compared to .283 ROM.Use SE update service or PC Companion for updating your phone.
And about cwm..try this...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1302037&highlight=cwm
Thx again
I know the diff between sim locked and bootloader looked. It's just that I don't understand why they let you unlock the bootloader, but don't keep the warranty...
I have unlocked the bootloader right now. Didn't know that it wipes all your configuration, apps, etc! At least, it's still rooted.
I have installed that CWM, and booted to it, but now I don't know what combination do I have to press to boot again into CWM XD Maybe is an image to boot just one time?
And about the ROM you recommend, PC Companion offers me the .62, not the .42. SE Update Service tells me that I have modified software (because of the rooting, I suppose) so it can't update my phone. Any idea?
Thanks again

Now that you have unlocked-bootloader, then you must not use SE update service, niether PC Companion Update nor SE OTA updates !! If you do,then it will brick your phone.
The other option you have is to flash a firmware. For more details follow this link http://www.wotanserver.com/en/sony-ericsson/se/xperia-pro-mk16/unlock-tool/debranding-flash

Thanks about the wotan link. Really easy to flash. Now I'm in .42. Do you know where can I find the firmware changelogs?
I'll take a second look to flashtool, because I'm going to need it to flash the CM 7.2 and the baseband...

If you just need to flash an official firmware, then there is no need to unlock the bootloader. I was advised not to unlock it when not necessary (for example to flash the phone with some custom ROM like CM). Because with locked bootloader you should not be able to brick the phone and you could be always able to save the situation using Sony PC Companion.
So if you need to flash an official firmware, you can do it without any unlocking via Wotanserver. The firmware flashing is free, just register there. The flashing is very easy - there is a graphic wizard which tells you what to do.
EDIT: Ooops, flashing FW using Wotanserver is no longer free - costs 2 EUR now. Few weeks ago I flashed my phone there for free...

[Q] sony noob. feel stupid...

ok guys i just picked up a play for att. sucks cause i have tmobile and wont get the 3/4g data. im almost always in wifi spots anyway so no big deal.
anyway i have already called att and got the phone sim unlocked. now if i think i understand this correctly this should be the order to follow. if you guys can confirm and provide latest links i would appreciate greatly.
1. sim unlock (done)
2. unlock bootloader (not yet)
3. root (not yet)
4. load rom (not yet)
correct??? did i miss anything? any preferred method on any of these? please advise.
thanks!!!
First of all, if you bought a xperia PLAY, you should probably post in the xperia PLAY forums.
Second of all, questions go in the Q & A forum.
To answer your question, that's pretty much the right order.

That repair button didn't work?
For img flash you can use flashtool.
You don't need root or anything to use flashtool on your phone.
Just pick correct .ftf for your phone and flash it to the phone.

If you were rooted before you don't need to re-root unless you purposely unrooted it. IF you aren't rooted anymore superoneclick or the zergrush(however it's spelled) is the easiest. I'm 99% sure you don't have an unlocked bootloader though, so you have very few options. I'd say re-root if you need to and unlock your bootloader so you can flash flash and flash custom roms like crazy

You need to pay Setool credits in order to unlock the bootloader. Unlocking the bootloader allows you to lose the sin lock as well, so you could have killed two birds with the same stone.

ya i just found the website. seems like thats the one everyone is sent to on this site.
im wondering now that im rooted if i can clean this stock rom up enough to use on a daily basis. i mean im using tmobile on the device so sharing internet would only be edge lol. i guess the only thing i really want ics for is that fact that its ics.
open the dial pad and use this code*#*#7378423#*#* . Then go to -> "Service Info" -> "Configuration".
If it says unlock bootloader = no, then you have to use the paid service, if yes, then you can do it for free yourself.

[Q] Unlocked bootloader wanting to root

Hi guys!
Well, I'm new in what concerns to root, unlock, ROM's, kernels (no idea of what it is still), etc. I have a Xperia Arc, GB 2.3.4, branded for T-Mobile.
As I'm fed up with the bunch of bloatware, I wanted to root/debrand it, in order to get rid of it.
First I tried with this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1035276 Post #2
Links for the ROM were dead, so I searched for some other thread. After a lot, I found this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1042978
I found it easy to lead, so i tried. I got so far, to even unlock my bootloader, but then, trying to root, I found the images link for the Global firmware was dead.
Then I realized, I wanted to change to the global versión for the mere reason of having ICS sooner (branded phones take longer to receive it, as far as I know). Then I saw, that actually I went in the full wrong direction when unlocking the bootloader.
I tried to relock thebootloader, by following the steps in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1324703
It appears to have worked well, but I'm not sure.
My questions are:
1) I want the SE ICS update, that is due to be available this month anytime. Since unlocking the bootloader might have turned my phone to brick (or not?) when upgrading, how can I be sure I did actually re-lock my bootloader? The guys from Android Soul Comnunity used a "Test" on their videos, which was running a program in fastboot mode, which apparently does something if the phone is unlocked, although it said "it needs to be rooted". Is there a way to know if I did it correctly relock whitout damaging my phone or flashing it by mistake in the process.
2) I really want to flash it to a global version and get rid of the bloatware (maybe rooted if posible), but also getting the official upgrade. Is there a way? I have the latest flashtool version and I downloaded the ftf file for the global version, but whenever I press flash in flashtool, it doesn't show anything (nor sin files or anything else). Maybe I will give it another try if someone else provides me with a functional link to the functional ROM (I really don't remember where I got the one I have).
I hope you guys can help me. I'm not a native english speaker, so forgive me for any mistake. Thanks in Advance
HerrJuancho
seems like you are new to this....so was I about 4 months ago.
if your bootloader is unlocked, good - keep it that way.
the best way to learn how to mess around is follow this thread step-by-step:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1299729
I know that this thread is instructing you to flash cm7 - but dont worry, once you have done that, you will understand the basics and the processes involved.
if you really want ICS - then you can just us Arconium 2.2 as it is the closed custom rom to a stock ICS - it is tweaked and customized, so it will be better than any global rom you try to flash.

Well, that's actually one of the steps before unlocking, I thought it was just a sign that the device was well connected and that the drivers were up to date. My phone wasn't unlocked, and it did show 0.3 right before trying to unlock it.

Fastboot.exe boot boot.IMG
If you get a notice "device not rooted" or similar the bootloader is loced.

2. Can you not restore the backup you made before rooting his phone?
Download Rom to your fastboot folder on computer.
Go to recovery and sideload the Rom. It should upload and then automatically flash for you.

Follow instructions well enough to post in the wrong section
Anyway, you can always use the sideload function. Download a ROM zip, place it in the same folder as your fastboot/adb programs and then select sideload within your recovery and follow the instructions. If you need more detailed instructions just google how to sideload with TWRP/CWM (whichever one is installed on your phone).

Download Rom to your fastboot folder on computer.
Go to recovery and sideload the Rom. It should upload and then automatically flash for you.

What rom??
OK, a few things needed...
1. Can you connect the phone when in fastboot mode and then use the following command:
fastboot oem readcid
and post the result? I wanna know so I can get the right back up for you
2. Which custom recovery is on the phone at present?

Pick one! If you want Sense go with Android Revolution, Viper, InsertCoin, Hyperdrive - they're all in the Android Development Section.

METHOD-1
If you want to be as close to stock rom you should download ARHD it is the best rom I have ever seen.If you are a total NOOB then simplest way is copy your desired rom(ARHD,IC,SD,Viper etc) to your ext-sd(if you have one or if you have an otg you may use it)then inside TWRP navigate to ext-sd then flash it!.
METHOD-2
You can do it via sideload-instructions are http://teamw.in/ADBSideload here.
Note: I would suggest to give the output of the following command before so that you dont mess with the device.fastboot getvar all then we might be able to help you out

Also there is another best way you dont have to think much is Flash Stock Rom And then ruu.
You can follow this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2735235.

My guide won't work as it's a branded phone. Easier to just flash a custom ROM or restore a stock backup but I'm waiting on the OP to post the CID to get the right backup for them

Firmware whilst S-On.

Morning all,
Im not S-off and I'm using a pretty dated firmware..
I was told that there is a way to obtain and flash a firmware WITHOUT wiping anything and without too much fuss.
My questions:
What is the COMMAND in CMD?
Where do you find the signed firmware?
How do you identify which one to use?
What does it actually change? As the phone does work on dated firmware, more optimised?
I highly doubt I'm the only one who would benefit from this, once I know the answers I'll leave them here and I'll write a guide on how to install them step by step I'll also link the firmwares do others can help themselves.
Thanks
Currently running: Viper 3.5.0
Firmware: 1.80.401.1
S-ON
Unecrypted.

Have come mate, but I've asked some other things plus there is apparently a way to do it without the use of a tool.
This is the specific thread for firmware update.
I think you can only flash the full stock zip since you are s-on. Do take note that flashing the stock firmware.zip will wipe your internal storage.
The firmware to flash should have matching CID and MID of your device.
To check your mid and cid type this command in cmd while the device is in download mode.
fastboot getvar all

Incorrect. All of @Sneakyghost's firmware.zips are for S-Off users only. It's stated in the OP of the thread right in the first sentence.

First make a backup. This will wipe your phone.
Then relock your bootloader. In fastboot fastboot oem lock
Download this RUU.zip
Rename the .zip to 2PS6IMG and place it onto your extSD
Boot to download mode and follow the prompts (vol up to flash ~ power button to reboot)
That's it. Super easy.
Delete the renamed .zip from your extSD or else every time you boot to download mode it'll try to update again.
Now unlock your bootloader again with the same bin code that HTC gave you when you first did it, or request a new one. Flash TWRP back onto your phone, then flash SuperSU or a custom ROM to regain root.
This is why I paid $25 for Sunshine.
For S-Off users, you just flash a small firmware package, and that's it. No data loss. No relocking the bootloader. No reflashing recovery. No re-rooting.
It really is worth the price in the amount of time and hassle saved through the lifetime of the phone.

OK so this is where I've heard different.. There apparently isn't any need to return to stock so think you may need to read the originating post yourself mate
Otherwise how would the tool mentioned in the second post work? Appreciate you saying all that but it doesn't help my query.
As for sunshine I completely disagree, I've had every single htc bar two since the G1 and I've had S-off on all of them where available so I know the S-off method well, and have made a lot of donations to developers over the years, I also buy all my apps and support Devs when they deserve it for apps.
In regards to sunshine, I paid for this app for my m9 less than a year ago, I get one license, I can't use this for my 10 and I'll have another phone soon so see little point, they should offer more than one unlock for £25 and the only reason why they've got away with this daylight robbery is because they've monopolised the market, I'm sure I'm not the the only person who's noticed this.
Anyway, I'll wait to hear from someone who knows about the signed firmwares and how to install them. The tool can do it, so there must be a manual way, Id prefer to do that as I've had problems with tools in the past and with firmware you really want to get it right.

I think you misunderstood me. I'm sure there is a thread somewhere here with signed firmware (there is for M8), but I don't know of it. If I did, I would have linked you there.
But you asked if anyone could give you help, so I offered you a way to do it.
Even if you find a signed firmware.zip, you'll still need to re-lock your bootloader since you are S-On.
You might as well save some time searching and just run the RUU

I'll check around, was speaking with @LeeDroid a while ago, can't remember him saying relock the bootloader, I'll ask him.
I'm pretty sure there is a way. Can't see that tool in the second post relocking your bootloader.

Actually, I have been following the method of @krassermensch's since before he started a thread about it. He posted to a different firmware thread about the method, and I've been curious about it since. In his OP he states that you need an unlocked bootloader, so his method is probably your best solution. I haven't tried it myself as I have always been S-Off on my HTC phones.

yea same here man, looking at the tools code it seems that it asks you to back up first.
I'll check it out in the morning.

The backup is necessary as the firmware update files overwrite the recovery and the boot partitions...
