[Q] Q About Modems - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

hi
im looking to find out how to tell which modem to use and if the baseband has to match the kernal version and really which modem to use.
model
sph-d710
baseband
s:d710.10 s.ek02
kernal version
2.6.35.7-sph-d710.el29-cl852097
build
starburst 1.5.12
hardware d710.10
from all the videos i watched the baseband and kernal ek or el numbers were the same. idk if they have to be or if i did somthing wrong. right now everything works but the 3g speeds are average 100kbps down and usally have 2 bars.
any ideas would be greatly appreicated
thanks
scapcom
also if you need to host a file i got a ftp just send a message for the info

You can flash any modem version you like. Kernel doesn't need to match. Mine does but that's beside the point. El 29 modem is fine IMO but some report problems with it. Try them all out to see which works best for you.

No you can use any modem you want.....it just depends on what works best for you
.....personally I am all el29....but some people swear by the older modems.....just mix and match till you find what works best for you
Edit.....aww ya beat me to it lol
Sent from the near past

Thanks ill try them out

There is a app network signal info that will give you the true readings of DBs ... Install it and see which modem gives you better signal strength...

So from the specs I wrote the modem is the ek02 right

Yes your modem is ek02 and your kernel is el29. Try and flash the el29 modem since that is the.most recent official build.

what modem am in on?

i was told flashing a gingerbread modem on the bamboozle 1.1 will improve battery life but i cannot find anywhere on my phone on what modem i am using and not sure on how to flash a modem is there a way to do this via cwm 3x or do i have to use odin never used odin so dont know how to use it.. i used it on my galaxy tab 10.1 but bricked the device so unsure on how this works thanks in advance...
There a thread in the development section with all the modems and a link to qbkings video showing how to flash and or Odin a modem. I believe its stickied at the top but not a hundred percent sure on that. Try the eh17 modem I've had no problems with it.

[Q] One week deep. LOS/Sleepy Radio software or radio based?

I like the hardware but this loss of service thing is annoying.
Has anyone determined if this is a software issue? Sprints network isnt great but my evo 3d fares much better.
Ive read around on the internet and I THOUGHT I read a post that mentioned a user reverting to EG30 which solved his/her problem. Only thing that isnt positive is whether the user reverted to software EG30 or baseband EG30.
Any insight into this issue, how to revert to an earlier software version? Ive tried various radios but not software. I appreciate your time.
I'm having same problem....my evo 3d had no problem with Los but my e4gt is terrible where I live.....I was told to try different modems but I tried FCO7 AND FC14 still the same.

I'm using eg30 at the moment...it's not horrible. I'm on the stock el29 software.
You flashed the FCxx radios? Which software are you on? Thanks.

Hmm, what do you mean by "loss of service"?
This is a term used specifically to describe losing service while the phone says it has service...

Ok, maybe that is incorrect.
Just using it, for example sending a tweet or an email, one may send immediately. Then if I choose to refresh or send a second tweet/email right after, the transmission arrows dont light up for a while. Its like the radio is going to sleep way too fast and it takes even longer to wake up and complete the transaction. Enabling/disabling fast dormancy doesnt seem to make a difference.
Edit: under these conditions, I never get the "no signal" icon. Just seems the radio is sleepy
Well I asked around because my signal sucks but I called sprint and they said my area has really good service.....but people told me to try FCO4 and FC14 and FCO7 that might help so I did......nothing helped.
I just looked it says I'm using el29 on my kernal and FCO7 under baseband.......not sure if that helps, ill try to find out more and if it helps ill let you know

I've been using eg30 all night and so far, knock on wood, its been working pretty well.

You just downloaded the eg30.zip then flashed it?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
If not then manually install a different PRL, so you can connect to closer towers in your area, and don't forget to update profile and prl in settings>about phone> system updates

Los on this phone is when you have a circle with line thru it the only thing that fixed that was reboot sometimes toggle airplane mode but they fixed that long ago . Now some ics had similar problems but had a lot to do with your signal strength...

FC24 modem with Calks 3.0 EL29 ROM, im pushing 1.5mb/s download in an area I would usually get .5mb/s max.
FC-15 has been the best for me so far on everything except for bluetooth as I haven't yet tested it.
Edit: I did a speed test on 4G yesterday with the FC-15 modem and got decent results though the latency wasn't as good as I would've liked it to be.
Test Date: Apr 3, 2012 4:19:32 pm Connection Type: Unknown
Server: Austin, TX

Calkulins 2.9.2
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
I don't see any difference in them. Only observation I've made:
The early ones totally sucked. I never got complete LoS but I'd go roaming all the time for no reason and had to reset network.
New ones are better but STILL suck. Instead of going roaming a lot it switches to 1X a lot. At least I don't totally lose service and get the stupid notifications.
Consensus: Sprint network sucks and the modems don't matter. I've always had problems with Sprint compared to when I had Verizon but I'd rather save $.

both fc24 and fd02 are the fastest i have used
FC18 I average around 2.0 Mbps down. FD02 around 2.1.
No problems on FC22 for the last couple weeks. Will make the switch to FD02 soon

Whats better about the crespo modem?

Hi, I have my epic running on cm10 preview, awesome rom by the way. Also my phone is flashed to boost mobile. I keep reading about the crespo modem, but I don't know what are the benefits of it. if someone can clarify this for me Thanks.
Okay I went ahead and installed it. My signal bars are down and my 3g is really really slow. Could be my area or it might work better on sprint or maybe this modem is to get better 4G SPEEDS (I do think have 4G in boost) bit it just not working out for me. Does anyone knows how to reversed the process to install an sprint modem?

Odin an epic modem or flash one using joemossjr's thread in cwm. sorry it's not good for you. it's been better for most people.
Yeah I tried flashing but to install the crespo modem I had to patch the kernel and also made another mod mention on the pages. Anyway when I installed the epic modem it doesn't recognize it. It don't let me make phone calls or Internet. So I install the crespo modem again

You have to flash a compatible kernel since you flashed a kernel patch to use the nexus modem.

The easiest way is to odin an epic modem and flash a rom that supports it.

If it works for you, then keep with it. You're free to try any modem, but you aren't bound by the ROM version.

If you're getting good signal/data speeds, stick with what you have. It really matters on your location. For me, FF18 is the best but for others, FF27, FH13, etc...

Modems are area/device dependent.
Meaning, what might work well for me, might not work well for you.
You can try any modem with any build. Try the latest and see if your speeds improve or not. Might find that what you have is the best for you, might not.
(some say to update profile/prl after each time you change, i for one, don't see improvement doing that, but try it)
: edit: From fi03 forward, 4g speeds increase due to changes of Wimax settings. So if 4g is a player for you, keep that in mind
