I currently own a 3g/wifi Kindle, and subscribe to the Herald Tribune newspaper which is pushed nightly.
If I root and rom a Kindle Fire with CM, I am assuming that I'll have to use the Amazon Kindle App to see my subscriptions. The paper has blocked Amazon from pushing it to the Kindle App - "The provider does not support Mobile Devices"...
(I've tried it on my Bionic -no go).

Is this an accurate assumption ? Any work around? Any way to toggle between the native OS and a rom, or does the native Kiindle app go away with root?
Thanks
Alan
The stock Kindle reader app that comes with the Fire has not been ported for use on other ROMs, so you would have to use the mobile kindle app.
That said, I'm pretty sure you could root and run the stock OS to try to get a little bit of best of both worlds.
Ive had to revert my girlfriends Fire back to Stock Rom but rooted and adw launcher because she subscribes to magazines that will only push to the stock fire reading app. The phone version works for everything else but amazon does not recognize the Fire if its a custom rom and just the reader app. Ive tried porting it over and I got it to work but it still cant be recognized as a Kindle Fire on Amazon so no auto push for magazines still. I edited the build.prop to look similar to the stock build.prop, but started running into issues.
So as far as magazines and newspapers go, you have to stick with the stock modified rom for now. I gave up on it for now, she really wants MIUI ICS back on there!
I subscribed to the Washington Post. Rooted my KF, then installed the Kindle App from the market. In my Amazon Kindle account, I added my rooted KF as a new device and switched my WP subscription to it. Then deregistered the KF.
So, I am not at risk of OTA updates screwing up root and am able to read all my books and the WP everyday on the Kindle App.

You will still lose root with an update, the issue is with custom roms, the mobile app works due to you still being on the stock fire rom. It still shows up as a kindle fire on amazon. The mobile app will work on both stock and custom roms but on custom roms certain reader functions get borked because it shows as a tablet or phone instead of a fire.

Rooted stock 6.2.2 but no digital subscriptions
I used Voodoo OTA to temp unroot and still no luck with digital subscriptions. Tried to force a magazine download from the amazon site but nothing arrived. Should it be working? Is there a workaround? The kindle app works fine with books. Newstand shows nothing. Am I leaving anything out?
thanks,
Charles

I used the "insecure" 6.3 update with the modifications made by eldarerathis (THANK YOU) and one subscription came through. (I'm assuming the rest will.) So now with rooted 6.3, I have the best of both worlds - google play and the amazon digital content including subscriptions.

After installing the 6.3 update from the thread mentioned above, what i thought was success wasn't. The icon for only one of my two pending downloads shows up and when i click on it to download, nothing happens. I'm a little bit closer, perhaps… but not quite. any thoughts?

It might be like the video, use voodoo to tempunroot, stop the app that you read your mags with, restart it and maybe you can download.
force stopped
The kindle app (not sure if it is one that I downloaded or the one that came stock but it is the only one I have), the Amazon device client platform and no change yet. do you know which apps I should force quit. Are there any that I should clear data? Is there any risk of clearing data?
I think the real problem is periodicals that are only authorized for the kf won't come through. I was able through the kindle reader, not the store associated with newsstand, to get a couple of things through. The NY times won't come through after root even when I try to send it from the Amazon manage my subscriptions page.same with Mac world. Hope that provides insight.
clear data
Wondering if i should clear the data of the launcher or other things to regain newstand? The Voodoo OTA works for video as it is, but not newstand. Is there an app specifically responsible for newstand? Also, the "store" associated with the stock launcher seems to be the kindle website. Is that indicative of something?
thanks for your thoughts
Charles
I installed a custom rom (MoDaCo GR8) and also had the subscription problem as well as my books loaded from Calibre disappearing. I found that to have your Calibre books and subscriptions recognized, you MUST use the stock Kindle app on your Fire. I had to uncheck auto update in the Play Store and then restore the original stock version from Titanium Backup. Once I did that, all was well again.
copy of stock kindle app
HI,
thanks for the great info. I will try that. Do you know how i can get a copy of the stock app? My first back up was after root and it has never worked since.
Has anyone tried to subscribe to the NY Times via the Play Store app on a rooted Kindle Fire with custom rom? I actually prefer the app to the Kindle subscription and since the price is basically the same, figured I'd cancel my Kindle subscription and go this route. I'm just concerned that even though my fire is running JandyCane, it will still be seen as Kindle by the NYT app, since the model number still shows as "Amazon Kindle Fire".

Hello everyone,
This is what currently running on my xoom. Camera and HDMI is working flawlessly. Contacts and Calender syncs with my Gmail without any problem.
My Xoom model is MZ606, Wifi Only Xoom purchased in China.
This built is firstly shared by "changguangyu" who is one of the xda member. He actually shared the sbf file released by Motorola China thru a Chinese hosted server, and that is why many users in xda are sufferring the slow download. Many thanks to "changguangyu' who share the sbf file.
I extracted the sbf file into system.img and boot.img that can be flashed thru fastboot. This may be the safest way to flash without risk of bricking your xoom. Click below link to download the images.
HUBWF_W5.I.7.1-14_HUBBLEWIFIHKTWNGEN_P007_A035_HWwifi_hubble_Service1FF-extracted.zip
Below are steps to flash via fastboot. (of course, flash at your own risk)
Pre-requirement:
You have unlocked your bootloader. (how to unlock bootloader)
You have rooted your xoom. (How to root Motorola Xoom)
Note: This will wipe all your sdcard (internal storage) data, besure to backup before flashing.
Boot into recovery, do a Nand backup.
Copy the images (system.img and boot.img) to where the fastboot.exe is located.
Take out the external sdcard.
Enter into bootloader. (Power On Xoom, Vol+)
Open command prompt. (navigate to where the fastboot.exe, usually "C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools\fastboot.exe", the right click > Open command windows here.
Type: fastboot flash boot boot.img
Type: fastboot flash system system.img
Type: fastboot erase cache
Type: fastboot erase userdata
Type: fastboot reboot
That's all, you will boot into ICS 4.0.3 shortly.
This is Stock ROM and for sure is not rooted, for those who would like to have root permission, download su-install.zip, copy it into your external sdcard, then flash it from recovery.
What I shared is not an sbf file, but the extracted images from the sbf files. (system.img and boot.img). One can always easily recover the xoom back to how it was by recovery. (eg. TiamatR4c Recovery)
Hope everyone enjoy!

The empty spaces are for icons of apps that I installed, what you can see here are stock apps.
You're really pimping this download, aren't you?
Like said earlier by Team EOS, people, download this at your own risk.
It should be noted this isn't exactly "stock" as we know it here. Sure, it's "stock" by Motorola standards, but this "stock" is ICS with Motorola's Blur additions because this release is Chinese based and not US based.
Bottom line: If you install this, you won't be getting a "Google Experience" like you're used to if you've used a XOOM in the US. Also, you could be exposing personal data since this ROM hasn't really been gone over with a fine tooth comb yet.
does this rom have working 3g?i have the mz601 europian model!!
Thank you, everything works great. Start up the game that did not work. super
Just gonna be brutally honest here guys. Do you really wanna expose your device to telephony framework in which the Chinese Government has influence? Call me paranoid, its all good. Paranoia keeps me out of trouble. The library files we pulled were completely torn apart by a security expert who is top notch in the industry. The libs are safe. I'm not gonna beat the bush on this one.

there is nothing to fall into paranoia. I installed rom the European Xoom wifi and everything works really well.
Thanks !!
No problem on my Wifi Only (MZ604), except that it "talks" to me in chinese (?) on first boot.
Note that first boot took something like 5 minutes for me.
All languages seems present, but default keyboard is not localized (no AZERTY) and has some chinese keys too.
Some chinese in menus too (in the "compatible" Zoom menu).
Thanks, nice Rom
It works OK on my US wifi Xoom. Everything seems to work
I'm usign it for 1h30 now... it seems very slow (comparing to eos), it lags a lot, applications start slowly (lot of "continue waiting/force close")
Is it only me ?
for me works very well. is very fast and so far no problems. start up games and apps that do not they run on other ics. for example, zen pinball.

It works very fast and smooth here. The only problem is that I get an error when I want to install su-install.zip from recovery. After that it seems to work but no apps which want root permission appear in the list. I don't get a toast eather when an app asks for the permission.
Even I don't see a toast and the file appears in the list. Rootpermission seems to work.
Everything works fine and smooth, Thanks
Is there the face unlock feature in this rom?
It is better when you share expirience with this ROM to mention which XOOM model you own. It is useless somebody just to say it works and another to say it doesn't work, but nobody says on which model.

No facelock, and there's a lot's of option in the developer section, it can show CPU usage and other stuff, probably a developer build, speed seem ok here, no different than EOS build
The standard motorola are there, I do not see much difference from a stock build, not sure what is related to blurr...
All app are restoring from market with this one!
The NFS.KO module and CIFS.KO are there, nfs was missing from EOS build
After a reboot, no more lags and speed issues.
Same issue with su (no authorization asked, no toast notifications) but su works anyway. Can't upgrade su binary via Superuser.
The only (small) issue remaining is some chinese text in few menus and system preferences (but it's totaly usable).
French (and other) keyboad is available with the android keyboard (default selected keyboad is chinese motorola)

I have MZ604 wifi, china is MZ606 asaik and some people bricked their tablet flashing, it is safe to flash in .img form you can revert as original poster mentioned! but this still exclude 4g tablet afaik
Hows motoblur? I would like a option of a skin on our tablet to play around with sometime.
When I try to down load needed info to my PC , it starts to load then will not, says its virus laden, my only option then is to dismiss. What is up with that. I have asked this question in every forum and venue I can find, but have never received an answer, guess this will not be any different:crying:
I have been wanting to root my first kindle for along time now. I have been researching and researching, for the most easiest and most informative way to do it, before my 1started.
I read everything here and thought that this will be super great and super easy, I still cannot download the drivers, to PC .
Reason I say thought is that I went through not only the directions, but the posts pertaining to the posting, many praise the ease of following the instruction, but many also say they are stuck here, and cannot seem to get past, this, and don't know what to do about what happen here.
If these question were then provided with answers to clear them up, then I would say that this is a good thread, but with all the questions, and answers not enough to cover them.
Well, I will not be attempting to try this, as much as I would like to. But seeing all the troubles posted after there attempt scares me. I am I will attest, to be the dumber of all the people here. And if I get into this root and hit a snag. As these smarter than me people have ,then I would be definitely throwing my old kindle fire brick, away.
I also realize that I need to find a forum more suited for my abilities, this forums name really tells me I am in the wrong place. . For developers by developers, I do not even know what a developer is.
What most users need, and I emphasize, most, because there are more people like me, who know very little, cruising through all these computer forums, looking for help to there problems, that they can easily understand. Than those of you, that seem to know everything, and ask questions like, does anyone know how I can flash a downloader on my custom ROM that is soft bricked, etc, etc, etc.
The reason there is not a forum out there for dumb people like me, geared to answer questions in plain simple language, is because there is no one, who would be smart enough to run the forum, that understands what plain simple language is. When you know a great deal about computers you don't want to hang with a bunch of dummies, but I think sadly, there is a giant hole in the market, that those of us with out computer savvy could fill.
It would be the biggest forum, on the internet, therefore attracting the most advertisers for income,, only problem in all this is there is not enough smart people who know how to speak down to the uninformed, to answer all the questions that flow to this forum.

The op (original thread post) covers several l subjects, so I have no idea what you are trying to download, from where, or several other factors that could be causing issues.
Then you edited your post almost an hour after I replied.

ok basically im wanting to make my kindle fire 1 more gaming oriented. So , I want the OS version to be minimal and fast but still new enough to be compatible with most things, and I want to be able to overclock as high as possible (i made a cooling system for it )
Also I've never done any modifying with android, so I dont know for sure what all the pieces are that i need to have and what auxillary functions they perform (as in: bootloader (loads kernel?), kernel (overclocking?), ROM (kernel included?), something else?) I am a Linux user tho, so it would be helpful if I didn't have to use Windows to flash or whatever
Suggestions?

alright you need to root, install twrp and firefirefire
start with
[How To][Root] Kindle Fire 1 update 6.3.3/6.3.4 [2015]
then pick a rom, see the index
[INDEX] Kindle Fire Development
most roms haven't see any updates in years, many roms do not even have working download links
there are 3 different types of roms Otter, Blaze, and OtterX
Otter and Blaze use stock partitions, OtterX use modified partitions/recovery/Bootloader
also see Random Builds and Development (OtterX roms)

is there a utility or something in the rom to overclock it then?

Don't think anyone found a reliable way to over clock
I don't recommend any particular ROM, read the threads, ask questions in the specific ROM thread
im currently testing out a few different roms. im looking for best performance, i'll update a little later tonight with my results.
ok, ive looked around and i think i want an otterx kitkat rom, but there are a couple and i don't know what the differences are (SGT7, slim...). Like I said, I want something fast and stable, as I am not too familiar with tablets yet. Also i thought overclocking to 1.2 ghz was pretty stable, from what i've heard?
so after trying lots of different roms, including otterx roms with the extra partitioning, i have to say i am most impressed with the performance and speed of twa_priv's CM/SGT7 10.2 Otter (not otterx) build. it is very fast, smooth and runs apps very well. I definitely recommend giving it a try. It even has the Overclocking features you wanted baked straight into the settings under the "performance" tab, you can easily adjust the minimum and maximum clock speed. Right now i have mine set at 1200mhz max and 300mhz min, i am getting very very smooth performance in Youtube and Kodi (my main use for this tablet) and battery life seems to be really good so far. I definitely rate this ROM an 8/10 for the kindle fire 1st gen, its the best rom i have used, even compared to the most recent roms here on XDA for the otter/otterx. For an almost 6 year old tablet this thing flies. I definitley reccomend giving it a try, in fact try a few other roms before you try this one just so you can truly feel how magnificently fluid this rom is.
I used: cm-10.2-20131022-1433-otter-sgt7.zip
I got the rom here:
http://d-h.st/users/loosethisskin/?fld_id=27993#files
the guide for installing the rom is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2410112
I used an ultra slim version of gapps that only installs the play store in order to save ram, you can manually install any google app you need from the play store i just did it this way to save what limited resources are available on this device. You can find the download as well as more info here:

Roms v.10 and v.3.9 (follow the steps)
There is a new ROM for probes v.10, is based on original update-kindle-37.5.6.3 for ford device... Is fully Lollipop (with art even)... So maybe doesn't work or is unstable... If anyone test it, remember not to apply root in first flashing, because it could give you bootloop with supersu zip...
Stock ROMs
(I suggest use this stock, instead of original...Just for the avillity to have safestrap even doing a factory reset)
-Wipe (optional, but only factory reset)
-First, install ROM v.10 version
-Second, flash gapps-711 in safestrap
-Important... don't flash supersu zip yet!!!
(maybe at this point it would be flashed xposed v.22 zip, I'm not sure)
-Third restart and install total comander (is in shared folder)
-Fourth, Install Google5 fix in the same session as upper step (there are in Google5.zip file, do it restarting your fire, this or another usual fix, the 4 files of fix are in this zip, uncompress and install this ones or another ones)
-Fiveth, (previouslly I supose you have downloaded all the programms not runnables in kit kat by apkmirror.com for example... Andrid Auto, instagram, and so on)... having it... install all of those ones apps and don't worry if doesn't work now...
-Sixth, reboot to safestrap... (we dont need root, because safestrap starts in a simple reboot)
-Seventh, install ROM v.3.9... without wipes, keep in mind... (So important without wipes!!!)
-Eighth, install Supersu zip (not in shared folder)
-Reboot and install Google4 apps of the google4 zip...
-at this point I hope all the apps installed with the previous v.10 version works now... in 3.9 version...
(if you are asked by google to update service framework... do it)
And, That all Folks!!!...
(now maybe all Amazon apps aren't upgradable, are deodexed)
For better Google compatibillity install at last, this file:
com.android.vending_7.6.08.N-all_0_PR_149245622-80760800_minAPI14(240,320,480dpi)_apkmirror.com.apk
(Download it from apkmirror.com)
about google launcher was a cassuallity, I have a program called button savior istalled and google launcher installed but not working... in any moment the buttom of tasks of button savior shows home task... and I killed it... so the system ask me what start home do you prefer... say GLauncher, and all ok...
(you can use a home switcher too)
Special thanks to @ggow and all the team

Im trying to root it now, I hope to prerooted it soon... and I like to know bugs, if someone had it... the first bug I found is that when the phone make system updates, and catch the fire os 5.3.2.1 version of silk (for example), this app crashes, but if you dont update the system apps, all seems to work...

I dont't kow really if it could be with HDX7 bootoader... I saw the link you've post and the problem I see is that the phone could be broken, or enter in a loop... if anyone want to have part of my work to do it, please, ask me it...
I'm testing new cooked roms, in order to make it more stable, since now I've have rooted (prerroted with chainsDD) and with kingroot later, after flash... and I've intalled google store with the old method, the new one doesn't works... but is what was comented in this thread, isn't so stable rigth now...
Can you upload to dropbox or other online disk?cuz your website is unstable. i can't download
thank you
New Rom cooked from another
Has anyone tried it so far ?
And is it safe to install it or it will brick our fire phone ?
And what are the bugs in this ?
New Rom cooked from another
You must contact @ggow,he is the only one that could help you in solving bugs and making a stable rom as he had made cynogenmod 11 ,slim kat and Asop rom,so you should contact him and tell hime about your work and its seems like that you have almost found a way to make an update to 5.3.2 (lollypop) .This means that we could install cynogenmod 12 and this will also solve the camera issue ..
@pipataki dont use ur site please, send it to google or Dropbox, because we cant download it
yes we can't download it from ur site so please upload to google or dropbox so that we could test it

Pipataki is afk now?
I've had this problem before with my Nexus 6P, and I can't seem to solve it on my Pixel XL. The apps I have that use Google Maps do not show the base map layer. For example, in Accuweather Premium, I can see the storm clouds on the map, but the streets, cities, rivers and lakes aren't there. Instead of overlaying the radar on top of the map, I see the radar displayed on a grid, like this:

I have the same problem with other apps such as GasBuddy, RedBox, etc that use Google Maps. I also use RadarNow, which uses its own map base, and it displays the map just fine. When I open Google Maps, everything displays just fine.
I have tried multiple factory data resets to correct this, but I can't get it to work at all. I am stock, unlocked via dePixel8, and unrooted.
Any suggesions?

Last time this happened to me, I reflashed the stock firmware and that fixed it.
You could also try uninstalling Google maps/wipe its data.
Reboot.
Then reinstall Google maps.

Thanks for the reply. I have tried wiping cache/data and uninstalling Maps, but it never hurts to try again. I'll also uninstall all the offending apps, and try reinstalling them again.
I wonder if I signed up for 7.1.2 beta, then unenrolled back to 7.1.1 if it might shock my Pixel back into cooperating. Not quite the same as reflashing stock firmware, but it might do the trick.
Maybe verify all the permissions are correct as well?

That I have done. Thanks for the suggestion, though. I am usually pretty selective on granting permissions, especially Location. But it has been granted for all the affected apps.
I even went into my Google account and re-enabled Location History, to see if that helped. I also tried downloading local maps in Google Maps for offline use. That didn't help either.
You can flash the stock image on top of your current image without losing any setup apps/data.
Just remove the -w from the script.
You'll have to update all the old Google Apps again, but the data should still be there.
It is something easy to try.
My guide will walk you through the process.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-xl/how-to/info-how-restored-to-stock-soft-t3494478
Remember to remove the -w from the script though!
Or download the -w modded script I added to my thread.
Thanks, Eddie. Well-written guide and easy to follow. I'm waiting for Google apps to update.
Keeping my fingers crossed!
Well, no luck with that. I use the -w modded script and everything went smoothly. However, I am getting the same blank grid where the maps should be.
I think I will try it again without the -w modded script to wipe my data and set it up as a new device. It can't hurt, I've already got everything backed up.

If you deal with it as-is for a few more days, then you can flash the March updates.
The new image should be released early next week and I'll be updating the how-to thread with that new image.

You might also try wiping maps data and uninstalling again, then try the Beta maps?
https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.google.android.apps.maps
I'm not sure if it's the OG Google maps which is always referred to as beta, or a beta of the Beta Maps. lol
Either way, it's something easy to try.

Given that you have noted that you are cautious about permissions is there any possibility that some other filtering or firewall settings on your device or network is causing things to not work? Just trying to consider other possibilities and am thinking that just because Google Maps works doesn't necessarily mean that other apps that reference Maps services do so in exactly the same way.

Yeah, it has me puzzled. On a whim, I tried a full data reset AGAIN yesterday, and logged in with a new Google account. I gave full permissions to any and all requests. Still no luck.
Hopefully 7.1.2 will trigger something for me. I am tempted to enroll in the Beta program again just to give it a shot, but I'll see what the March update brings us.
any fix on this? I'm having this issue on myradar
I'm on 7.1.2 DP2, and still no fix. I have clean flashed stock 7.1.1 multiple times before I took the 7.1.2 DP2 OTA.
Everything was working fine before I dePixel8ed. I don't know if that is related at all, but it's one of my few remaining avenues to explore.
I know this thread is kinda old; sorry about that, but I have this same problem not just with the Pixel XL but also the new Samsung 8+ both of these phones are stock unrooted and holding the latest version 7 of android
I am too seeing no map data for some apps like GasBuddy but Google Maps themselves work so I thought it was bizzare but then again you never know if Google is playing nice? Maybe this is on Google's end and not allowing those apps to use their map API?
What good are the apps if you can't use the map?
