Guide - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Is there a guide anywhere showing how to customize phone after rooting. I seen allt of roms and am wanting to try and customize one of my own. I am aware of the risk that i could mess up but i want to learn. I tried searching but nothing really detailed comes about.

Uuuuhhh. What's wrong with the step by step guide that Hebrewtoyou already made?
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App
Its sort of confusing compared to other step by step guides. Hebrews guide is not Noob friendly. There are so many guides out there that are easy to understand and are Noob friendly but when it came to one of the most important things that the slide needs, it turns out to be more complicated than it should be. As far as I'm concerned the guide is hard for me to understand but I can't claim to say that for everyone. I was just hoping if someone would help by making a video or a more Noob friendly step by step guide. Then I would be really greatful and thank you for replying.

I just went and re-read the guide. I'm not sure that there's anything in there that can be simplified more than it already is.
Partitioning the memory on the device is potentially dangerous if done incorrectly and I think, if that guide seems confusing, you should probably just not attempt to do custom partitions.
I mean no offense.

The thing I don't know how to do is s off. Not only that, I also want to know if you could use terminal emulator instead of adb.

Bumping your thread isnt going to make a reply come quicker, you do realize people read more than just the first page of threads?
But anyhow, the answer is no. "Hold back to kill" is a ROM specific tweak. It is hard coded into android source code by CyanogenMod. I have however had an idea for "hold back to kill" app where the app listens for a Hold search broadcast, then kills the foreground app. But until someone makes something like that. The only way to get Hold back to kill is by flashing a CM ROM.
wow i do appreciate your answer. it's nice to see someone adding a littke A to the Q that actually has knowledge on what i was speaking about. nobody else answered because they mostly had no idea what i was talking about. and not to start an argument but I've takin your bumps not needed approach for the few years ive been here and im not exaggerating when i tell you there were many that floated to a back page to sit forever. most peoples idea is that the further back the post is either there is no answer or its an answer there prolly not going to have the answer for since nobody else has by that point. but trust me i see your angle. thanks for your reply and im gonna keep researching on this because I'm almost positive it can be added, it's just how much work is going to be involved and can i do it lol. thanks
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
It can be added. Ive got it on my list of mods that i want to get around to adding here. Its a mod that requires decompiling a couple of apk/jar files and editing the code. It is one of the few that haven't been added to any of our stock roms so ill probably bump it up the list a bit. We shall see.

I dont think thats possible. Its a ROM source code tweak. As in the source code is changed. So far ive only heard of CM and MIUI Roms having this. Just google it, im sure if it was possible someone would have already done it. I mean it requires editing the complete layout of the settings window. Unless you just change a jar file to listen for the hold back and then have it kill it.
But if you know how to do it, can you share what files need to be edited? Ive seen this question pop up almost everywhere and even ROM devs say its only possible via kitchen. But hey you learn something new every day
I could swear ive seen it ported to other stock roms such as sense and tw. Been a few months since i last looked into it though. Gotta go to work so ill try to find the info for you later today.

It may have been ported. But they may have used a kitchen. Like I've seen stock ROMs have it but I've never seen a ROM without it get it added without cooking a new ROM. But I'll be hitting refresh awaiting the information! ^-^ thanks!

Teacher...

Okay I've been a little nervous to ask this in spite of the answers I may get, but I'm going to ask anyway. What exactly would I need to know to make my own ROM, tweaks, themes, hacks, and what not? I've taken 2 C++ courses although that was high school and 1 java course. I'm really interested in this, and if anyone who knows what there doing would take me under there wing to teach me. I thank anyone for any answer in advance.

Well if you want to get started I would say the easiest way would be to get an aio like mine here (There are others as well). Get your PC setup so you can decompile and compile apks and jars. Once you have that setup, I would start by looking around in the folders that it decompiles. This will help you learn where things are and how the apks work.
If you want to do theming you would need to know xml, how to edit images, and knowing java is always a plus.
Once you know where things are and feel comfortable editing apks, Then I would start learning the other stuff. ROM making, mod making, and tweaking will all get easier if you understand how the phone works.
Hope that helps get you started. Let me know if I can help you out with anything.
Shoot me questions if they pop up, can't always get back right away but I'll always try to help. Its been said before and sounds cliche, but read up. And I mean ALL over the net. The amount you learn troubleshooting your own problems as they arise(error messages etc) are invaluable and unfortunately can't be taught.
But for the other stuff, hit most of us up and you'll find help. Think I can speak for he majority of us on that one.

This is what I love about the xda community.... everyone so helpful I wish to build my own ROM someday too! I wanna take an android programming class but current college I'm attending doesn't offer it and I tried learning on my own but never could get android SDK or eclipse to install my old laptop.... gots me a way better Asus now and I always help with anything I know but that's simple stuff like making bootanimations, where stuff goes in the ROMs ( but I don't know how to make my own), I'm always experimenting with my build.prop and other tweaks til I soft brick and have to dirty flash my phone, I flash to different carriers, different prls, etc.... just simple stuff I'll gladly help. If asked I'll be a tester.... but I can't quit build my own rom

Google search will always be there for you when most needed
Ya googling only can take you so far. Not the same as an actual Mentor. If that were the case we wouldnt even have schools anymore we would just tell our kids. "Hey google it!" And educational systems would be pointless....
Thanks for all the advice! I really appreciate it, so when I do have questions I can't find the answers to I am happy to have people I can go to. Although I have to put off until I get my own laptop around Christmas... soo you won't be getting anything from me for a while lol

Root? Which Mod? What am I to do?

I give in. I'm gonna root my device. Been looking for the right steps and don't know what means what. Not stupid, just cheap/chicken. Wanna learn and just don't know where to begin. Guy on YT roots in a few minutes - just doesn't show clear screen shots. You guys talk about this or that mod - I get lost in stocks, cm's, and kernels. What's a noob to do? Are there various 'roots' or just one basic? Any kits to apply? And then what - after it's rooted? What about the counter - why's that a big deal? Too many questions? Not the right ones? Help! Please! Thanks for sharing your experience and wisdom.

Just viewed cursed4eva's root video - is it REALLY that easy? I loaded superuser, titanium backup, mobile Odin, ES fe/tm, ROM tbp - and kept em up - when I got this phone. I figured it would be helpful 'just in case' and now I'm down to like 3g outta 12g after only 104 days from activation. I've reached my 'jic' point.
Sooo... Gonna do it tomorrow morning (omg - it's like I'm 6 the NBC...)

I'm in the same boat as you are as I am a new user from Iphone to Android. Totally in love with the my SG3 and looking into rooting my phone..

Is pretty helpful, I've been reading up on all the stickies as much as I could and hopefully I will be brave enough to tackle all this soon. Good luck!
EDIT: I was looking at the cursed4eva suggested by the other member on this thread and I believe the rooting methods on there is for the I9300 not the SGH-747M model. Maybe someone with more experience can confirm this?
Just down load the root tool kit in the stickies. Walks you through step by step and the file you download contains everything you need in order to root

This will probably help. Follow the instructions, I just did and it is very simple.
Download the root kit from stickies like said above. That's what I used. Simple. Actually thought it was easier then rooting my note. Def easier then when I rooted my inspire or LG nitro or all the iPhone jailbreaks

No problem...if you need links to anything im probably your guy, I subscribe to all threads that I feel are important (content wise)
For example, this thread shows how to odex APKs (apps). Same method can be applied for odexing frameworks files
I love being self sufficient to my phone, but it's hard. I barely know anything so far.
