Can i replace the gps.conf in Wonder with S II's gps.conf? Will it improve anything? Or is it just hardware related? ;D

Can I ask what is the problem???
You can edit the GPS.conf to reflect your geographical location and the aGPS server, etc
I would not recommend straight replacement of any file.....it's just a file, but you never know.....
Didn't you post this 2 days ago:
Locks indeed faster!
For the NTP server,
-Change to 'uk.pool.ntp.org'
For the a-gps,
-Change to 'supl.sonyericsson.com'
-Change to '7275'

My response here
No. 1 the sonyericsson server is off-line!!!
I showed stats ping and traceroute....100% packet loss still.
I would not use that server!!!

Ahhh shucks! No wonder now my GPS i trying to lock satellite takes forever. This is my gps.conf :

@Irishpancake,
This is my current gps.conf :
NTP_SERVER=0.my.pool.ntp.org

Hello again my friend
hope not too much stress !!!!
I can only point you to sources, like the http://www.pool.ntp.org/zone/my
Which is for Malaysia, your Country......
The active NTP servers shown there are:
Code:
server 2.my.pool.ntp.org
server 1.asia.pool.ntp.org
server 2.asia.pool.ntp.org
I would modify your /etc/gps.conf like this:
Code:
NTP_SERVER=my.pool.ntp.org
NTP_SERVER=asia.pool.ntp.org
XTRA_SERVER_1=http://xtra1.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
XTRA_SERVER_2=http://xtra2.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
XTRA_SERVER_3=http://xtra3.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
SUPL_HOST=supl.google.com
SUPL_PORT=7276
The above is based on the list of active servers presently for your Country and Region:
http://www.pool.ntp.org/zone/my
Also this post from the Fasterfix thread on XDA:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16960283&postcount=202
Things can change from time to time, but you should be covered OK.
EDIT:
I have checked with Ping to the my.pool.ntp.org servers, from 0-3, and I can get all of them, they are on-line.....so perhaps just use my.pool.ntp.org...as above.
Also, Ping to asia.pool.ntp.org is good, so use that!!...as above.
Definitely, supl.google.com is good.
More Detail about servers :
NTP server is used to get accurate time, without you can't get a correct GPS location.
XTRA is the GPS Satellite position servers.
SUPL is the Location server uses for A-GPS. in this case Google's own.

Just that sometimes servers are off line, so using the generic address, without the 0/1/2/3...
will be sufficient to address whichever NTP server is on-line.....
Nothing else really!!
Has it worked??
You should also get Fing, free from market, or some other network tool, to check server availability from time to time.

For now, i just used my current gps.conf and if the gps locking takes longer time i edit it to your modified gps.conf, is that better?
BTW, i have installed Fing from the Market. So, now i just need to switch on GPS and run the app. What should i be aware of then?

Good to know it is working OK......
I would say leave well enough alone, if your config is working, it is fine.....unless you feel the need to change!!!
Fing is just a network tool, not specifically for GPS, but very useful for doing stuff like Ping, Trace route, checking your local network, router, PC connectivity, DNS lookup, etc. etc
I like it coz I'm an old teckkie, like this was my job before I retired, due to Cancer, which is now OK......I hope.
So when you say, switch on and run the app, not sure which app you mean......
if it is Fing, it will not help with GPS, only useful for diagnosing Network problems....!!!!
You have a nice day, OK

Aw crap...
um, I think it might come in handy when I'm going to use my desire to hack into wireless networks, yep, you know, wardriving and such and hacking WPA networks on the fly.
now this could be fun
but I may need a couple of thousand more desire phones running parallel to accomplish that in my lifetime.

For those of you who have been disappointed with the compression that T-Mobile applies to images downloaded across their mobile network, there is now a solution!
Go to accelerator. t-mobile. co. uk (sorry, can't post links yet) in your Desire's browser and choose from one of three options:
Highest speed = reduced image quality (recommended)
High speed = standard image quality
Lower speed = original image quality (not recommended)
Obviously, choosing original image quality means pages will load slower and use more data so it won't be for everyone, but at least it stops pictures from looking like a fuzzy mess .
According to this thread (support. t-mobile. co. uk/discussions/index?page=forums&topic=801038047a8ee12012a7f988ce0007fbe) at the T-Mobile support forums this may also work on other phones but you may have to spoof your user agent.
KazeXT; thank you, been waiting for a solution for this for a while now!
Oh my god!
many thanks!
to you and all your descendants!!!
thank you very much for this
edited off.
Looks like the site is down and my images are crap quality again. I hope they haven't shut it down for good!
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I checked the site again just now and it still seems to be there. Remember, you need to access it from the browser of the phone you want the settings to affect (presumably using the data connection rather than wi-fi). That's how I understand it at least...
Yeah its back now. It was just down a few hours thanks.

At last! YAY!!!
Thank you T-Mobile (for once) and KazeXT for finding this! Seems to be exactly what they should have provided long ago
I wonder how long the setting lasts though, is it permanent until you decide to change it again or does it reset at each reconnection/after some other period of time?

Hmm, weird. And you accessed it with WiFi off and on the T-Mobile network, not whilst roaming onto Orange? I accessed it about an hour ago and it worked fine for me...
Right - wifi off. Nobody said that! But I realise how stupid I've been!
Ahh - the OP mentioned it in passing in post #7, that was what tipped me off! In retrospect I can see the logic, as if you accessed it from outwith their network they wouldn't have your account details and therefore wouldn't be able to log your settings! Glad it's working now for you
Hi guys
I am having some GPS issues and signal issues with my new Nexus on Vodafone UK. I haven't been on the network before so the signal could just indeed be very poor everywhere I go but he GPS is awful and would not lock / find sats for ages.
Anyway after digging around I see Voda had probs with the S2 and GPS and a fix was found. Many user reported that there aGPS settings were set to:
NTP_SERVER=north-america.pool.ntp.org
XTRA_SERVER_1=http://xtra1.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
XTRA_SERVER_2=http://xtra2.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
XTRA_SERVER_3=http://xtra3.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
SUPL_HOST=supl.google.com
SUPL_PORT=7276
This file is in /system/etc/gps.conf file
Voda apparently fixed the problem but did not say how and I was wondering if anyone in the UK or europe with a working fast fixing GPS signal can confirm that their gps.conf file reads like this or has europe.pool.ntp.org as the first line. Mine currently reads as above and works but is flakey and no where near as good as on the desire i had.
Thanks in Advance

Just to clarify this info is easy to see just using astro file manager free. Just press the up directory button then go to system then etc and you should sew a file called GPS.
Any help would be great.

It seems that many people are not as obsessed or focused on pressing a thanks button or getting a thanks as you are.
You even beg for them in your signature!! What for? Seems kind of sad to me.
I am not a Phone expert but help where I can as can be seen in the threads below. However I am impressed that you have taken this opportunity to go off topic and point out that I have received no "Thanks". I understand this would be a life changing issue for you and that you would probably require many months of therapy, but for me it really is no big deal.

Mines configured like the above 4.0.2 Google build, sim free on 3 network uk .
I noticed very long lock times until I downloaded and used a GPS tool to clear my GPS data and then re-downloads this every hour . Basically the cache has the last stored location giving and if your moving about and use the GPS a lot when you load back up maps or something you should in effect be not too far away from your last cached fix and so helps in a new fix time. Well that's how I understand it any ways . I 'm sure someone else may no more indepth .
Any ways my lock times seem to be quicker now than before .
It shouldn't really matter what NTP server you use. After all, it's only used to synchronise the internal clock, in order to get a fast4er initial fix. Sure, it might make sense to use an NTP server provided by your operator, but I really don't think it's that big a deal.
(NTP is a time synchronisation protocol, used e.g. to synchronise PCs over internet. It's got decent precision (~10ms), but it's not as good as GPS or IEEE1588.)
(I'm on a stock 4.0.1 machine provided by Sunrise/Switzerland, and I've got the same settings as you, and no problems with the GPS.)
Just for info... top level ntp sources (stratum 0) use high grade GPS equipment and their precision is way better than any other widely available system. However, your precision can depend on the latency between you and the ntp source and the stratum level of your source (higher stratum = less precision due to being further separated from the original source 0)
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Sorry, just to clarify further... using a providers ntp server is likely to be worse than using something like pool.ntp.org unless, in the unlikely event, they are a stratum 0 ntp source. I would however pick ntp source in the same country, not USA if you're in the uk, due to latency. Accurate ntp is important in a fast GPS fix as GPS is actually a very sophisticated clock, where timing deltas are used to determine location. Gps is commonly thought of as a location device that tells you where you are but its actually a series of clocks that share information to derive coordinates.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
BTW my GPS conf file is the same as the op's, incl north America ntp source.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Thanks for the replies:
I have now installed faster fix and set my ntp to the Uk and appear to be getting fast locks now but I have also upgraded to 4.0.3 so I am unsure which did it. Seeing as you guys all have a similar setting to my original post I probably had a corrupt file or it was a bad rom version. Who knows. Thanks for the confirmation of the file though its very much appreciated.

Hi iofthestorm
Found the same behaviour on my thread (not DevDB).
I've noticed that 500 is raised over attachments (images too) only when using desktop browsers. Control panel shows my attachment but it's not accessible. Tested with: Crhome, FireFox and IE ... logged and as anonymous ... same 500.
But, browsing the same thread with xda-app shows up perfectly.
Weird!

Thanks for the feedback guys. Had an issue on the devdb file server the other day and it looks like when things came back up the MySQL server didn't start properly which prevented new uploads. This is now fixed and I've tested it, so let me know if you still see any issues with it.

Was working for a while. This time I am getting an error to the effect of "error processing on this server - not authorized".

I have no account issues I am aware of (I can still post).
Thanks in advance!

I redid the downloads server a week or so ago, there are some new security measures in place and that is probably what caused the not-authorized error for you. I just downloaded one of your old files and re-uploaded it without issue. Can you let me know what browser you are using, or if there are any extensions that might be blocking in?

Thanks, the plugins are probably doing it. I use unbranded FireFox (IceWeasel) with the NoScript plugin (although xda has been allowed for a long time - I may need to whitelist something else, or use Chromium/Chrome).
UPDATE: it appears that Chrome is handling uploading fine (Chromium was a bust due to the lack of Shockwave Flash support, as the Upload button was dead). Is there a predictable server for the authorization I could whitelist back in IceWeasel - that way I don't have to switch browsers? (Seems that the authorizing server loads at the last moment, preventing me from determining it's name.)
Hey guys... I hope some Admin will have the chance to look at this:
Every time I try to access the XDA wiki, I'm seeing an empty page... which is a crying shame from my point of view... This happens both when viewing from work as well as viewing from home... even when viewing it on my mobile this happens! I'm connecting to the world from The Netherlands... which has possibly the best IX connectivity in the world... but the wiki is unreachable
Who else has this issue? What can I do to fix my access?

Can you try now? The issue is that the [ and ] in your username are restricted characters in MediaWiki but not vBulletin. I've written a patch that should fix this by setting you a username based on your user ID, so please check to make sure this does work for you.

It looks a bit funny (My user ID + space and xda as username), but I can actually see the wiki now! :victory:
Good patch! :laugh:

Yeah since [ and ] are restricted characters it kind of messes up the integration. I was just going to convert them to _ but in case someone registers that name on XDA (like _NUT_) we just use the userid in that case. So it is a bit confusing but should at least get you access!
