[ADB] Device cannot be started (Code 10)

For some odd reason, I lost adb functionality (i.e. any adb command issued receives "error: device not found"). I looked in Device Manager and noticed that MyHTC was gone! I looked at my phone and USB debugging was enabled and in charge only. I could put it in USB Drive mode and the PC would recognize it as a USB Mass Storage Device so that I could exchange and view files but no adb.
I searched and searched on this issue for hours and installed over a half a dozen "androidusb.inf" driver files several times over. Every install generated the Code 10 error where Device Manager was lacking some information from the driver file and could not start the device. I reinstalled HTC Sync and gave that a try...nothing. Downloaded USBDeview and uninstalled all HTC drivers including the HTC Android USB Device and tried again to no avail. WTF?! What else am I supposed to do?
Well, in a "what the hell, let's give it a try" kind of moment, I decided to toggle the USB debugging off and then back on (and yes, it was checked and on the whole time). WORKS!!! WHAT THE CRAP?!! MyHTC is back in Device Manager and everything is back to normal. I'm glad but irritated!
I share this story in hopes that if someone else stumbles on this problem, they will not have to go through the same headache as I did. Just thought this was odd considering how many times I have plugged and unplugged and never had any problems with adb.
Toggle USB Debugging....so simple. *rolleyes*

Same Issue
I've got the same issue on my EVO 4G. Just installed the latest CM7 and now it tell me device not recognized. If I manually install the drivers it gives me the same code 10. I can't bring up the phone as a storage device and toggling the debugging is not working. Any ideas?

You installed the hboot drivers correctly?
Boot into recovery, with usb debugging enabled, connect to pc, it should install the drivers.

Still the same
Even when I reboot into recovery it still gives me "USB Device not recognized." I previously had MikFroyo on my phone with no problems. I'm at a loss.

You most likely have a bad cable, do you have another one you can try?

Not at the moment but that may explain it. Still seems weird for it to just go out right as I change to CM7, but still a possibility. I am going to run and grab my other cable. Thanks for the advice.

The new USB cable didn't fix the problem. Also, in device manager, even with the driver installed its labeled as "unknown device."
If I boot into hboot the computer recognizes it.
**update: After rebooting from the hboot, my phone is recognized by the computer however, a disk drive is not coming up in "my computer." I have USB storage turned on but Im not getting anything.**
Any help would be much appreciated!

Apparently the Micro USB port on the bottom of my phone is going bad... I talked with some other people who've had the same problem. HTC knows that the ports aren't very sturdy as well. Well... sad day for me.
Also if you're getting the notice from windows saying that you your device will run faster in a 2.0 usb port and you know the port is 2.0 ... chances are your port is going bad as well.

Flashed to MikFroyo and none of the above stated problems. I would venture that it was CM7 but apparently everyone else is able to use it so who knows.

DHD Sd Card and Usb to Pc Problem

Hey Guys and Girls.
Till few days ago my DHD was working just fine.
Now when I connect it to pc nothing happens, just show that its charging.
Phone is not showing that I can chose USB type, and pc is not recognizing anything, even in computer manager.
Weird thing is showing in phone application manager, when Im going to transfer app to sd, its show "TRANSFER TO PHONE STORAGE", but when is on sd it show "TRANSFER TO PHONE".
I think I tried everything. Pls help.
1. I instal 3 version of custom Rom and still same thing.
2. I test my sd in computer and other phone, work fine.
3. I tried original USB and other USB and nothing.
4. No pc can recognize phone.

Sound like you don't have the usb driver installed on your PC.
Install HTC sync to get the drivers. You can uninstall afterwards, but leave the drivers installed.

I tried few times to reinstall HTC Sync , I also tried to instal older HTC Sync and nothing. Phone when connected not showing USB options, it only show that its charging, same as when I plug it in to wall charger.
Can someone trie to see my weird problem in app manager as I wrote in first post.

And another thing, when u connect your mobile phone to any pc, it will ask you to chose USB connection type, even u don't have instaled drivers, u can use it as device USB storage

Try a different cable, or a different phone on that cable.
If a different cable works, the old one is dead.
If a different phone works on that cable, you have an issue with the phone.
If neither work on either phone / cable, try a different PC.
What firmware are you running?

I'm using RcMix 3d, runnymede 4.0.
2.3.5 with sense 3.5.
Cables are working with other phones,
Maybe my phone lose driver or something. Hmmmm

You could maybe try a full wipe, and/or reinstalling the rom.
Better yet - backup your current rom, then wipe and see if your phone connects. If it does, I'd restart from there.

One more thing.
When I'm going to backup my desire hd, everything is fine,
But on sd-ext its say no sd-ext backup skipped.
Maybe that's the problem?

Computer not reading sd card when phone is..

Help. I don't know what happened but my evo is not being read by my.computer, only reads my sd card if I plug it in separate(sd reader). It was workin perfectly this morning, then I tried usb theter my laptop and got it to work. Went back to pc and I get this error. I didn't move any settings exept download clockwork tether. Please help

Exactly what error do you get?
Did you CHECK "Don't ask me again" on the window that pops up when you plug it in?
Go to system settings => Connect to PC
There should be a box that you check/uncheck to make that window pop up.
When you plug it in, do you get the USB notification in the notification window? Can you click on it to change the connection type?
Is there any other useful info you can provide?

I had a EVO recently that the usb internals died techs couldn't even repair ... Or just make sure double check you have drivers installed , usb debug checked too

Well thing is,it works on my laptop but not on my PC(WHICH USED to work cus I rooted there) I'm gonna try and install the drivers on pc,the ones I recently used on laptop.
It only charges the phone cus the light is on.but the notification doesn't come up nomore,

I'm on cm7 with tiamat kernel

I haven't had any problems with that ROM and kernel combo.
Have you tried different USB ports on your computer and different USB cords?
I can't think of anything else other than what's been mentioned.
If you have any more info, that might trigger a thought in someone's mind.
Make sure to post again when you figure it out!

I reinstalled the driver and it solved theproblem.
Kinda weird tho cus just because i installed the phone to laptop, pc failed to recognized it(maybe pc got jealous lol)

[Q] Odd Error when plugged into computer? [device isnt recognized]

So, when i plug my S3 into my computer i get a weird pop up dialog. [first picture]
and yet, it says its connected correctly. [second picture]
but when i click open devices it says its a modem? [third picture]
i used to be able to transfer files but now i cant transfer files to or from my computer. it isnt recognized as removable storage. maybe i changed a setting or altered something i shouldnt have? anyone have any clue whats wrong?
specs:
ROM: Paranoid Android v2.54 [build number pa_d2spr-userdebug 4.1.2 JZP54K eng.kbizzle.20121111.103307 test-keys]
KERNEL: 3.0.48-cyanogenmod-ga19948b [stock for the rom]
Windows 7 Service pack 1
64 bit [if it even matters]

Are you using an sort of "fast charging" mod with the kernel?

nope, no fast charging kernel.
and i just reinstalled the drivers from the 'Samsung GS3 QCom Toolkit' and it still didnt recognize it. [during the second part of the install where it tells you to plug in your phone, the same pop up dialog appears. and it doesnt install.]
whats weird, though, is that i restored a stock rom with root from when i got the phone [and when the computer would recognize it properly] and it still didnt work.

you did uninstall drivers and reboot computer before you reinstalled the latest drivers?
There also was a recent update too...search and find this driver...

i did uninstall, but i didnt reboot before i reinstalled. ill try that now...
edit: uninstalled, rebooted, installed 1.5.xxx, rebooted, plugged in phone and got the following results, the first picture was during the install, the second picture is after. it still says its a modem.
edit 2: just took out my sd card and plugged the phone in. now its working perfectly. so, my sd card is corrupted? im planning on getting a new one anyways so its no big deal, just wondering whats going on so it doesnt happen again.

so i got a new sd card, formatted it with a card reader, put my music on it and everything. and as soon as i put it in my phone and plug my phone into the computer the same thing happens. i dont get it. :/

Happens to lots of folks. For me, I have to toggle back and forth from camera to MTP several times before it gets recognized. I do not have kies installed on my pc and it makes no difference which driver version I use. Also, I have never had the issue when plugging in to my laptop running Win 7, only my desktop running Win 7 and I used the exact same driver and usb cable for both. There's lots of threads about it, have a look at this one.

[Q] S3 Not connecting to PC

First post and I had to make a thread,
Well to get to the point my phone will not only not connect to my PC but it will not connect to anyone els PC either. Well at least none running Windows 8 have not tried it on Windows 7. Was working fine this morning than it kept disconnecting on its own until finally will not connect at all. The PC will charge the phone but will not open the folder or recognize it as USB. I have installed drivers uninstalled and re installed does nothing.
I'm am using the original cord the phone came with. The phone is rooted running Jelly Bean.
Also When I do disconnect the phone from PC it say's it's still charging for a few seconds than stops.
Any help is appreciated thank you in advance really hope it's not the phone or USB on the phone.

It was the cord that went bad just ran out and bought a new cord sorry for useless thread :silly:
