[Q] Flashing new radio with MIUI - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So it seems there is a lot to think about when flashing a new radio, and I suspect I need to update, my Inc data speeds and signal are always terrible. I want to update my Incredible to radio 2.15.00.08.08, but I'm just not sure how or what the best way is with my current setup. Here is what I'm running right now
ROM: MIUI Build 112090
Radio: 2.15.00.07.28
Kernel: 2.6.38.8 Incredikernel
Again, I would like to update to 2.15.00.08.08. I understand that I need to put the PB31IMG.zip on the SD, is this correct? Then I am kind of lost, I know to go into hboot, but I don't know the steps are after getting to HBOOT. I've also heard stuff about needing to dial *228, will I need to do this after, considering I'm on MIUI or what? I hate to be needy and ask for specific steps, but I've searched and haven't found a definitive answer for installing new radios on MIUI. I apologize if I didn't search well enough.
Come to think of it, what radio exactly should I use? And from which site people on XDA reference two different sources to get them from? Should I do 2.15.10.07.07 (GB according to PvilleComp) or 2.15.00.08.08 (Newest Incredible according to rootzwiki)?
There's the list from Rootzwiki, which the Incredible Developer forum sticky references, and users often reference radios from PvilleComp?
Which is the right option?

I can't tell what you attached in your images but either source is correct. On XDA, we refer to "pvillecomp.com" as it's an all in one site for the Incredible.
To install any radio, just label the file as: PB31IMG.zip
1) then place it on the root of the sd card
2) once you boot into hboot, your phone will search for that file name and prompt you to update. I believe it prompts to press volume up to approve the update.
3) boot directly into your rom, in this case MIUI, to ensure the process completes. Don't go into recovery, go straight into your rom as the next step after upgrading your radio.
As for *228 on AOSP, I'm honestly not certain if it works. I know you can do this for Sense roms but I'm not entirely clear that process for AOSP cuz of misinformation.
Edit: once you successfully upgrade your radio, delete the PB31IMG.zip file from your sd card. Otherwise, you will be interrupted with the upgrade process each time you boot into hboot in the future. The radio 07.07 is the newest Incredible radio and 08.08 is the latest from the Evo although it works as well for our phone. Try both but I suggest 07.07 to begin with. Your experience depends on a host of factors.

Thanks, I'll update tonight and see how it goes

[Q] Cant update from 2.1 to 2.2 htc incredible

Hello fellow forum members;
I have done a lot of searching on the forums and still cannot find clear steps as to going about upgrading my DINC from 2.1-update1 with baseband 1.00.03.04.06 to a 2.2 working rom. Most of the time, i'll download the zip and rename it 'update' but it will fail and abort.
Initially, I rooted, then followed the walkthrough video to UNroot. Now, ive been stuck on 2.1-update1 for days and my phone will not update to 2.2 OTA and im getting extremley frustrated. THis firmware is no good whatsoever. Can anyone help me in getting the CORRECT, WORKING zip package to load into recovery?? I'll paypal you cash if you get me up and running, without quesiton. Im desperate.
Thank you in advance!
If you are still unrooted with stock recovery, then follow the instructions at http://www.droid-life.com/2010/08/31/manual-update-droid-incredible-to-android-2-2/
Be sure that when you rename your update.zip that it is in lowercase and that it's not inadvertently named update.zip.zip. Also, make sure that your sd card is formatted to fat32 rather than fat. That should put you where you need to be.
try dialing *#*#2432546#*#* and seeing if that updates it. should force a check for updates if they've been pushed by the carrier at all. works better than the check software updates in the settings.
Najaboy: Will try that right now, thank you for your replay man. My SD card is already in Fat32, so i'll dump it at the root and give it a shot.
Baram: i tried that, getting a 'success' message, yet the firmware still stayed at 2.1-update1
I will report back in a few minutes after folowing Najaboy's request.
Thanks again, guys.
Ok, got a 'Status 7' Error upon running the zip. Both downloaded files return a Status 7 error. I"ve looked up some help regarding this but the ones i've come across are not very clear, and sometimes the answer could be like...20 pages back from the first post due to down links and such.
Instantly regretting my root attempt.
Any ideas?
Check your current software build number. It should be 1.22.605.2 in order for the update to work.
My software number is infact 1.22.605.0
At this point, I'd probably just re-root and get S-OFF. After that, follow the tutorials for upgrading your HBOOT to .92 and radio to 2.15.00.7.28 via PB31IMG.zips. After that, you'll be able to use any of the 2.2 ROMs including a stock one.
It's a bit more involved and carries some risk if you don't follow the proper steps, but is the same upgrade path that I used.
The upgrade.zip path that we tried for you isn't going to work since your phone doesn't have the May OTA. I've done some searching and can't seem to find it available online anywhere and some members have indicated that VZW is no longer able to push it- instead offering certified like new replacement that have it.
Have you tried an RUU? My suggestion would be to go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=786436 and try the "Part 2: 2.2 stock using OTA RUU"
Basically all you have to do is download this http://www.fourty.net/~berzerker/stockstuff/PB31IMG_3.26.605.1_RUU.zip
Make sure your SD card is formatted as FAT32.
Put the PB31IMG-3.21.605.1_RUU.zip to your SDCard, rename it to PB31IMG.zip
Boot into HBOOT (PWR + VOL Down) wait a bit and it will ask you if you want to update. (VOL + UP) It will then update to the stock 2.2, with the 2.15.00.07.28 radio.
Also DO NOT PULL THE BATTERY! And make sure you have a good charge.
Then you can re-root using the latest UnrEVOked, it does the S-OFF for you as well.

[Q] First Time Flashing and Bricking It!

Right please forgive my noobishness (is this even a word?) but Im really worried about flashing my phone for the first time.
I have partitioned my card, titanium backed up and created a nandroid back up now all thats left is flashing.
Im planning to flash this rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768703
What I am worried about is bricking it without lack of knowledge of radio files and how to properly do it. Something about GSM and CDMA?
Plus I saw in the thread this: "Use either Amon RA or clockworkmod Recovery < also available via rom manager from the market"
Why do I need to use them?
Help please preferably with a step-to-step guide?
Thanks in advance.
Read this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696189
Do I need to switch S-off?
Do I need to flash the radio files and what is the difference if I do or not?
Plus should I use ROM Manager to install the new ROM?
Wait just noticed my current baseband version is one you can download from the Leedroid site, so does that mean I dont have to flash a radio file?
you never MUST flash radios, it is only a possibility
my advice, since you are obviously new to this, dont change radio, i used the radio that came with the phone since december and it worked OK.
usually you should consider upgrading your radio if it doesnt work well e.g. bad reception, data or wifi problems etc.
when you are more confident with flashing, go S-OFF (which is super easy, seriously) and learn to use FASTBOOT which is the safest method of flashing radios or recoveries

[Q] Hboot questions

Hopefully this hasn't been covered. I wasn't able to find anything after half a day of searching.
My questions is regarding setting up DZ hboot on a G2. From what I've read this is necessary on some (seems like most) ROMs due to the size limitation of /system (particularly Sense ROMs).
Is there any reason necessarily to stay at a G2 hboot if I can deal with /data size restrictions. I'd like to switch over to a few other ROMs that require it, however, I wouldn't necessarily want to keep switching back and forth if I don't have to. A few particular scenarios come to mind.
1) I create a backup of my current CM7 backup and would like to go back to it after running a sense based ROM that require DZ hboot. Am I required to restore the G2 hboot before restoring?
2) If I didn't want to remove the DZ hboot, can I just do a clean CM7 install over it?
3) Is there anything in particular that requires the DZ hboot? Does this only change the hboot? I thought I had seen somewhere that it changes radio and radio needs to be reflashed to G2 (I'm new to radio flashing and haven't read up enough on it yet).
I guess I am just trying to understand the dependencies of ROMs and hboot. Any thoughts or references would be most welcome. Thanks.
If you flash the DZ hboot you will be able to restore any nandroid backups you made before changing hboot's. All roms will work on the DZ hboot cm, sense, miui and aosp.
You will only ever need to change hboot's if you need to go back to stock for warranty purposes.
If you follow the guide on www.virtuousrom.com to change hboot's it will change your radio, but if you successfully mange to flash the hboot you will pretty much know the procedure for flashing radios.
Do Androids dream of electric sheep?
Thanks CJ. That gives me answers to most my questions, time for a little more reading.
Quick question however, is the zip method for flashing radios preferred, or fastboot and setup the img? Especially after switching the hboot as the proccess sounds the same.
Or is the process of naming PC10 etc zip files the way of tricking the bootloader into using those files?

Sorry for the late reply, had a busy few days. Either method is good but check the md5sum before flashing radios.

[Q] Should I flash radio? (Intermittent reception of SMS, poor call signal)

Greetings!
Thanks for stoppin' in. Hate to clutter the posts, but all my browsing/searching through the site thus far has lead me to older links that don't seem to answer my questions.
My history with my HTC Droid Incredible has always been a mix of positive and negative. One thing I've always been plagued by is a hit-or-miss experience with my call signal and messages.
Details:
-Incoming calls don't ring and go straight to voicemail (I use google voice).
-Many calls are plagued by static or generally poor signal.
-Text and image messages are often not received, or when they are, they often arrive hours after the fact (even the next day).
I've been told that flashing a ROM to a rooted device may include flashing the radio and that each ROM may include its own copy of a radio version. Is this true?
Is flashing the radio typically part of the ROM?
What version of the radio is considered best or most efficient for a VZW HTC Droid Incredible currently?
Is it worthwhile to flash the radio separately?
I'm currently on the beta ICS Miui rom and running smoothly aside from a small handful of buggy behaviors. I've seen these issues on stock as well as Cyanogen 7 and other MIUI ROMs. This is also my second (or third?) Incredible, having had it replaced under Warranty in the past and have typically always had some issues of this kind. Typically, I've just considered some of it to be part of the luck of the draw when using a cell phone.
Anywhos, thanks for the help, folks! If you need further details, please feel free to ask.
No custom roms come with radios that i have ever seen.
Flashing a raido may help your situation and it may not. As to which radio, it is really a matter of which one works best for you.
Here is a page with a bunch of radios that are all compatible with the incredible, even the ones labeled evo. http://dinc.does-it.net/radios
I go with the 07.07 radio (GB update version) it works fine, that or the newest Evo radio. 08.08 or 12.19. I live in a splotchy signal area and from playing with it, it seems the newest ones work best for me.
Sorry for the late reply. Thanks for the suggestions and input - I'll look into it as soon as I have a chance to get to a computer and such.
Looks like I need to re-flash my ROM as it is, given the alpha of Miui ICS I've been using isn't behaving very dependably at this time.
After I figure out a way to back things up and actually load into recovery (another mysterious issue has recently cropped up where I cannot get past HBOOT), I'll get a fresh ROM done and try another radio.
Anything I should be aware of regarding the radio with consideration to the process or eventually returning to stock if needed?
Kudos!

General Update:
I tried a number of different solutions to my recently developed issue of being unable to boot recovery. I could get into HBOOT, but every time I tried selecting Recovery, it would default into another reboot of HBOOT. ROM Manager hasn't been any assistance either, as directing it to load into Recovery only brings up HBOOT.
On a whim, I decided to go ahead and try re-flashing Recovery (first option in ROM Manager), despite it showing that it was updated to the latest edition. I then attempted to reboot into Recovery right after and ...drum roll... it worked! Go figure. -_-;; ah well! Figured the suggestion of re-flashing the Recovery might help others looking for a solution.
I'm going to go ahead and see about wiping and flashing a new, stable ROM and then I'll jump into the radio suggestions above.
Thanks again!
Naming patterns?

I'm looking at the link provided by the other person above and seeing interesting naming patterns. IIRC I'm currently on the 2.15.00.07.28.
Just want to make-sure I'm reading this right - is 2.15.10.07.07 newer than 2.15.00.11.19? I would guess so, plus I'm gathering that it was the version you suggested.
Further, what are the effects of using an EVO radio? Sorry for being such a noob, but I'm honestly curious!
Thanks.
Nothing wrong with using an evo radio. I use the 07.28 myself but its because it works best in my area.

Correct, 07.07 is newer than 11.19 radio. 11.19 was released in November of 2010, 07.07 was in July of 2011.
Thanks! Learn something new everyday.
I completed flashing the radio! Yay.
Didn't realize at first that it needed to be flashed via HBOOT (though I should've assumed such based on the name), rather than Recovery, but got it taken care of w/o incident.
Immediately, I've seen an increase in signal strength (max bands), and received a text msg that would've been sent earlier this morning. I'm looking forward to seeing further improvements!
Thanks everyone for your assistance.
i use the evo 08.08 radio and it works like a charm...i tried all the radios but i found this one works the best!
How are you guys flashing these radios to your incredible phone? I kept trying by booting into HBoot and renaming the radios to PB31IMG.ZIP but it won't flash it, because the Security mode is ON S-ON. I have the OTA GB update with 07.07 but I can't seem to turn S OFF

You must have s-off to flash radios. One question, what is your hboot version? To attain s-off for:
.92 then follow this guide here
OR
1.02 then follow this guide here
The only experience I have and can reliably speak on is installing radios while s-off AND having hboot .92. I can't speak to the success rate of installing a radio with hboot 1.02, it's entirely different and unfamiliar to me.
I recently started using the 12.19 evo radio and it is much better regular signal wise although somehow 3g seems spottier

Unable to find/install stock RUU on hboot 1.57

I did a little too much screwing around with my One V earlier today, and I'm honestly afraid that I've hard-bricked it at this point. I have middling experience when it comes to RUU installs and flashing/experimenting with new ROMs and kernels - but my last root/ROM flash attempt didn't go as planned. I'd installed the stock RUU earlier in the day in order to get the radio update (which, as I now realize, was more or less pointless as the new radio sounds like it's a pain to deal with), and had just finished unlocking and rooting the phone. I booted into TWRP to flash my favorite ROM, and I'm pretty sure this is where I messed up: rather than just wiping System, Cache, Dalvik, and Factory Resetting, I opted to wipe everything I could select in that menu. Please don't ask why (I was tired and out of it, and had planned on re-formatting my SD card at some point - it made sense at the time...) - I now realize how stupid this was, and I'm going out of my mind trying to fix it.
I thought it would be a simple matter of flashing the RUU file I currently have, but alas, I now have hboot 1.57 and the newest radio version - so I get an "hboot is older!" error when I attempt to install this older RUU. I can't locate an RUU based on hboot 1.57, and I'm not sure whether I'm just looking in the wrong places or interpreting RUU filenames incorrectly (perhaps certain RUUs would prove compatible despite incorporating a slightly downgraded hboot...?).
Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated - if you need any more information from me in order to provide a solution, please let me know and I'll respond as quickly as I can.
EDIT: I have a CDMA One V.

Well i dont have a CDMA one v but i know that the RUU for hboot greater than v1.17 had not been released.. So the best method to recover stock ROM is using a stock ROM backup with the same hboot and radio version , if anyone bought a one v recently he should be on the latest hboot and radio version , you can get a stock backup from such a person or search on xda for such a backup..
There isn't a RUU for the Hboot 1.57 and the newest radio. Sorry to give the bad news. You will either have to use a nandroid backup or install one of the custom roms such as RhythmicRom, e3remeSense or myOneV. Good luck on your rooting journey!
Thanks. I ended up successfully installing Rhythmic, but I can't get x3reme Sense (my preferred ROM) to work, for some reason (which is sort of ironic - I know Rhythmic incorporates a fix to allow for compatibility, but I thought one of the OTA updates was supposed to prevent installing anything not based on Sense). Oh, well.
If you'll use this kernel, then x3reme Sense will boot. I tried it for a while, but for a sense based rom I prefer myOne. If you want to try it, Cyanprimo will boot and run fine with the RhythmicRom v1.2 kernel. That is my daily driver(at least for now).
