[Q] compatible rom with hotspot for EL26 and otherwise stable

just got a replacement phone from sprint. it came with EL29, although I just rooted with the one click method for EL26; so now my build is on EL26.
was reading that Calkulin's rom forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1332837
had everything I wanted; except it was built on EL29... anyone know whether or not this will work for me or should i search for another rom?

For what reason do you want EL26? EL29 is the newest if you have not found out. Just curious as to why EL26...

to be real honest, i was confused when i first rooted. that is, i downloaded EL26 vs EL29 when rooting and now am nervous about going back to install the root again in order to get the newer version. however i think i will do that now

You dont need to reroot nothing. If you are currently rooted, your good to go. Just flash the EL29 modem and then flash your rom of choice. Its easy as cake. Just as long as your rooted with recovery.

Making sure I don't brick Q's

I know you guys probably get a lot of new users asking...
Recently I acquired a SGS2 with sprint.
It is currently on ICS leak 24.
My understanding is that while on ICS or AOSP:
* never mess with CWM, ROM manger, recovery. I don't ever use nandroid backup's so I'm okay on that zone.
* Make sure the USB cable isn't bad, or phone port.
* Always use the EL29 full restore odin one click(not the preserve data package), then install the CWM recovery and wipe data/use Calkulin's_FORMAT_ALL one or two times. Then, flash the custom ROM of my choice. Then re-flash back using the EL29 Full restore if I wish to try out another ROM or update to a ROM.
I have no issues following those steps to ensure I don't brick my device. Is all correct? Thanks guys!

Always Odin to stock before switching Android versions
Use only FB21 or FB28 to flash ICS ROMS
You don't need to go back to EL29 to flash a new Android version. But Odining to stock can allow for a smoother install. But it's pretty pointless to say... Download The Goodness ICS Rom 3.1, and then when an update comes to 3.2, go back to EL29.

It is okay if I flash a ICS ROM from EL29 though right? =) I'm pretty comfortable with blazer 4.1 at the moment though so I see no desire to flash a ICS ROM till source is out and there is an official method.

Yup no problem at all, just make sure your on the stock repacked EL29 kernel and not rogue when you flash and don't restore anything when ICS is installed. Once source is out we should be good on bricks but till then be safe broski. I like ICS too but I'm sticking with blazer too just because battery life.

Thanks for that, So I can't be on the rogue from autoroot option C? How would I go along the terms of that.
I use the EL29 Restore package, then use the auto-root package to install my recovery. Unless that isn't correct. Can i use the recovery of rogue to flash an AOSP ROM at least? Sorta confusing after being a HTC user for the longest... Touchwiz feels very smooth compared to sense.

Lol sorry I should have clarified what I meant by rogue. That kernel is fine as it's the repacked el29 kernel, however don't use A rogue kernel such as gunslinger to flash (kernel with OC and UC options) You may not have issues but better safe then sorry. I actually really like tw, between this and aosp it's my favorite. If your going to flash aosp such as aokp or cm9 I recommend following the instructions here

Late to the party, but if you are going for GB to ICS, I recommend you Odin a stock EL29 first just to be safe. Also, make sure that your GPS is locked before you flash to ICS so that your GPS ability stays.

Safe Flashing

Hi all, I've been reading a lot of threads around here about safely flashing our phone. I'd like to verify somethings before I go around flashing things.
It is my understanding that its ok to go from any rom to any rom using sfhubs odin oneclick methods. Is this correct?
It is also my understanding that I can flash any rom (unless otherwise stated) from CWM recovery safely if I am back to EL26+CWM using ODIN.
I have some confusion about this. Currently I am on a stock EL29 unrooted build, if I want to flash an ICS rom would I flash the EL26+CWM tar via ODIN and then use CWM to wipe and flash ICS? Is it also required that I flash an applicable kernel along with the rom?
Also I have never used odin before. Do I need to install this program from somewhere first before I can flash things?
Do I need to root my existing EL29 setup before I can flash the EL26+CWM tar?
Sorry for the huge number of noob questions, I just don't want to take chances with my phone. I'm an HTC guy and things seem to be done very very differently there. I'm very interested in trying the upcoming date to the Blend ICS "The Goodness" rom.

The best advice I can give you is to look up qbking77 on youtube. He has step by step how to videos on rooting and flashing your E4GT.

Ill tell ya right now I would not recommend flashing an ICS rom it is soo buggy I hate it! I just installed the tablet one I forget what it is called but nothing but force closes even when ya aint doing anything it will just force close on ya. Stick with gingerbread untill there is a final release for ics trust me. Way to buggy right now!

I must agree with RB!
I would not mess with ICS if you are new to this phone (and even some that are not ). If you really like your phone, I would recommend trying out the many Gingerbread roms for a while. It is a much safer and far more stabile learning platform than ICS.

As far as flashing ICS I would check out one of the official leaked builds before trying out a custom ROM. I've noticed that some people seem to have different problems even though we all have the same phone. The changes from GB to ICS were enough to drive me nuts sometimes, but I've been using the leaked builds with minimal problems for the last few weeks. I have to say I take back what I said I was getting all those force closes but then I did another factory data reset and now it is running smooth and I am LOVING ICS!!! You should check out the Hydra Rom by team Venum it is soo sick! It makes your phone like a tablet!!!

True you can use either Odin or Mobile Odin (and it is best to have both). But I find Mobile Odin much more convenient. I always keep an the EL26+CWM tar and an ICS Tar (Kernals) on my phone at all times. It is much safer to do anything on the EL26 kernal such as wiping, flashing, nanding, and etc. Even if you are on an ICS rom you can Mobile Odin to the EL26 kernal flash whatever you want, and lastly flash back to an ICS kernal and reboot. That is about as safe as you can be. Like the other posters said though try out some GB roms first there are many great developers, and these roms generally have far less risk associated with them. I am currently running Epic Venum Rom and it is great. Happy flashing!

Yea ya see sometimes when people ask for opinions on here I say try it yourself because its different for everyone. My battery life compared to yours and my user experience compared to yours. I am on Codename and have 0 issues and honestly dont even need an upgrade. I could rock this ICS till my next phone.

I rooted my stock build with sfhub's odin OC, then used sfhub's autorooting utility to flash EL26+CWM. Got into CWM and wiped everything a few times and then flashed Blu Kuban ICS.
Now that I tried this, if I want to try a different rom should I just Odin OC back to my rooted EL29 build and repeat the process or would it suffice to just use the autorooting utility, flash EL26+CWM and then flash my new rom?
Can anyone recommend me an ICS rom that is fairly similar to a stock ICS experience? It doesn't have to be CM9 or AOKP. I'm just tired of Samsung's cartoony icons and themes. "The goodness" seemed interesting.
Also what is the best Gingerbread rom around here in case I decide to stick to that? Any that are themed like ICS?
Also if I wanted to, I could go from my blu kuban ICS rom straight to FE10 using the Odin OC safely right?

Thanks for the help all. I settled on tFE10_v0.1.0, a tweaked version of the FE10 leak. It's also skinned to look like stock ICS and I'm using it with the ICS launcher instead of TW.
Smooth, stable and good battery life so far. I'm quite happy with it.

Odin OC back to EL29. It is HIGHLY recommended that you not flash GB kernels on ICS roms, so flashing EL26 from ICS is not ideal. Insofar as rom i was on goodness until just recently, which is great, but recently switched to AOKP build 35, which is AMAZING

I would just flash el26+cwm from mobile odin/odin and boot into recovery. Once there just wipe and flash like you did for Blu Kuban. You don't have to go back to GB ROM, just need el26+cwm. As stated above it is unsafe to flash to el26+cwm using ICS recovery, but is safe to Odin/Mobile Odin to it. I always have stockel26cwm.tar, an AOSP kernel, a stock ICS kernel, and whatever ROMs I'm currently using. I also always have Mobile Odin and Root Explorer installed.

I would definitely look into the HyDrA rom this rom is soo sick I cant even explain it! You need to actually use it to appreciate it. I knew as soon as I saw the review video by qbking I had to have it. Ill post a link for the review.

Wow you just saved me a whole lot of time. This whole time I was under the impression you had to odin back to Gingerbread rooted, reinstall CWM before flashing another ICS rom. I never knew you just needed the el26 kernal! Thank you! Quick question though what slot do you put the kernal in the PDA?

I believe you use PDA slot. I use Mobile Odin as I'm always at work and never near a computer. I do believe there is a free lite version on these forums somewhere or its $4.99 on Play Store, but it is a huge time saver as I flash a new ROM several times a week at least(currently addicted to HyDrA).

No problem. Just trying to save you some time/effort. One more thing though since I don't think it was ever mentioned. You should always verify the md5 checksum before flashing anything. There are free apps on the Play store to check with and most developers post a checksum by there downloads.

No you will have to root install EL29 with SFHubs one click method here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1429243
Then you can install CWM and finally the GB rom! :cyclops:

great thanks, but that link to download the stock rooted el29 doesn't seem to work.
What if i do a factory reset. wouldn't that set the phone back to GB el29? then root, install cwm, and install calks GB rom?

No! If u do that, you'll still be on ics! And just google sfhubs one click el29 one click root and download

It took a few hours of trial and error but for those who want to know, here's how you install a GB ROM (in my case Calk v2.9.2) from a stock unrooted ICS ff18:
- download the el29 Odin file here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101 (make sure all drivers are downloaded and installed)
- Run Odin el29 (this will get our ICS ff18 back to GB el29 BUT your phone will be glitchy. Do a factory reset and the phone should start up and function correctly).
- Now, install CWM for el29.
- In CWM install your ROM. In my case I installed Calks v2.9.2 so i had to download and run his "wipe all", (I forgot to do this the first time and it I got stuck on the galaxy boot logo), then install ROM.

With all the crappy ICS FF18 bugs/battery/scroll issues, I'm on edge about going back to GB.... I would get a day and 1/2 easy with Calk 3.0.. even with ICS Blu Kuban i dont get a whole day.. (yes using RC1 kernel)...
Only thing I really like about ICS, is I can install S-Voice Other than that, GB did all i need.....

4.0.4 Update with Root and Custom ROM?

Alright, so my phone isn't on 4.0.4 yet, and I was wondering if it would be safe to update it even though I have a custom ROM installed. The ROM I'm using is Blazer ROM EL29 v4.0, if it makes any difference.

What are you asking? Do you just want to jump to ICS?
You can use sfhub's one-clicks to get to stock rooted FF18 (the latest OTA version). With sfhub's one-clicks you can try the 'no data' version (to preserve your user data) but you may experience some wonkyness. If so use his 'reset data' to just completely start fresh. Then use sfhub's Autoroot package to add a custom recovery - CWM+Agat_safe kernel.
You can then use CWM to install what ever ROM you choose - as long as you read AND FOLLOW the developers recommendation for installing their ROM.
Nearly all of the ROMs are so polished and reliable you really can't go wrong with any of them Try them out and see what works best for you. The devs here are all pretty awesome.

I was on blazer 4.1 before jumping to ics too. I used format all zip and flashed blazer ics in recovery. I then flashed agats latest kernel right after. I believe blazer ics was using an older version of agats kernel.
Don't forget to flash the ff18 modem if you want it.

If you receive the ota update and try to install it, it will fail. Blazer ROM has changes to the system files that will cause it to fail. If you are on a custom ROM, there's no point in dealing with ota updates. The dev of the ROM will update it anyway.
If you want ics and rooted, then follow what leader said above. I was just saying since you were already on blazer, the blazer ics is a great ics rom.

Well sounds like your trying to 'save some time' by not going the full wipe route or the other one I suggested - use sfhub's FF18 One-click 'preserve data' (which by the way is like an OTA update they - Sprint/Sammy release interneally) and then seeing if your data keeps/is intact and there are no issues. Then adding CWM via his Autoroot.
IF you use the above method you have a very good chance that your data will be intact and you will then be able to 'move it forward' to other ICS ROMs.
From there you can flash the 'Modified_Calkulin_Format_All' which keeps data then flash the latest Blazer and see how that settles in and if you have any issues.
I've used this method on no less than three devices and all worked and worked well.
OR
You can try the 'fast way' [with which you may still end up having to do a complete 'reset data' Odin flash anyways if it tanks]
Use CWM to install the latest modem of your choice (FH13 has been great for me and many others).
ThenTry using Calkulins Modified Format (keeps you 'data') And after that flash the latest ICS Blazer.
