[Q] 4G on The T-Mobile G2

Is the T-Mobile G2 or HTC Desire Z open for 4G networking? I was going through my billing information and it said additional $20.00 for 4G services but at the top of my phone it says 3G? IDK if it is because of root etc. But I was wondering if this phone is 4G. Leave comments and please support my question. Thanks ahead!

Mine runs 4G, so yes its open to it.

The G2 supports HSPA+ on T-mobiles '4g' network.
Or are you wanting to buy the desire Z and use it in the US?
And you shouldnt be getting billed extra for 4G. That's Sprints thing.

I think on the G2, "H" shows "4G" services.. I could be wrong though. I have a Desire Z.

They have the same radios apart from frequencies. I believe the Desire Z is more suited for AT&t bands?? [EDIT: Wrong, DZ is UTMS 900/2100]

Thats daylight robbery if you are!! On this phone, "4G" isn't any more than "3G" HSDPA with a higher uplink speed, Thats good marketing on their part.
I used to switch off HSDPA (HSPA+) on my phones for much better battery life.

I heard somewhere on xda that sometimes "H" shows when you are still only on 3G, that they were overemphasizing the H instead of the G or something of that nature.

Thats your call mate, I don't know how T-Mobile USA does its billing. That could be your data plan or something. However, I dont think they'd disapprove about the rooted phone TBH, just don't tell them. You could confirm you're in a "4G" (HSPA+) area with a simple query. Also, if its a custom ROM (Cyanogen etc) ask in their thread to see if they have a similar issue.

Yeah, I'd heard similar. On the UK stock Desire Z it constantly sits at "3G" until data is in use then it negotiates "H" (depends on network support) A very good battery saving feature if you've ever used Windows Mobile phones!

So what is the average speed everyone is seeing?

I just went on a month-long road trip, taking my G2 out of the new orleans hspa coverage area for the first time, and I noticed a marked difference between hspa (H) and 3G (G) coverage. And edge might as well be no connection at all, it would seem. My friend uses verizons cdma networks, and while a lot of times he didnt have data connectivity either, he at least had phone capability, which was more than i could say for t-mobiles gsm. but now that im out of the desert and back in the city, my phone is the rad again.

The Desire Z/G2 does NOT have 4G or/and "4G".

nothing you can buy today meets the technical definition for '4g' and nothing will for quite awhile.
my G2 is just as fast as my Friends EVO on Wimax, and my friends Thunderbolt on LTE. so as far as me and the general consumer should be concerned the G2 is a 4G phone because it offers significantly faster data speeds compared to 3G only devices.

the problem is the definition of 4G. there isn't one.
the G2 is hspa+ capable, if you have a signal.
verizons LTE is multitudes faster up and down.
there is _NO_ such thing as 4G.

So you're asking this because of the billing, right?
I assume you are seeing this on the bill (or something similar): "4G Web Unlimited $30.00"
That's just the way Tmo describes the "unlimited web" on the bill. I don't *think* there's any difference between the dollar amount for say the G2 and the MyTouch 3G, for the data plan.
And, for what it's worth, I'm seeing up to 10mbps down and *up to* 4mbps upload around here... That's close enough to true 4G for my purposes. Beats the pooh outta my DSL line

There isn't. Even if you have a ****ty ten dollar feature phone, your gonna pay thirty bux and its gonna say 4g on the bill.

For the purpose or your original question yes, its "4G" capable, in a "4G" area it should be showing "H". Someone who uses the MIUI rom may be able to confirm this. On the stock DZ rom, "H" is both HSDPA and HSPA+
The confusion comes from the definition of "4G" or the lack of! The ITU who maintain telephony standards define "4G" as LTE-Advanced or WIMAX (802.16m). T-Mobile successfully argued with the law that they could market their HSPA+ offering as "4G" on their "new network" which in reality is just a simple upgrade.
For the record, speedtest reports about 3Mbps down and 1Mbps up which is quite respectable. I believe its on HSPA+ at 14.4Mbps.

Okay I get it! They are charging me for the coverage and capability. This means that the phone is cabable. But how come it says 3G though I'm still a little concerned even though it is possible for me to have 4G how come I am paying for something I don't have. Is says 3G loud and clear! At no point has it said 4G but why is it that I am paying for it?! But I do understand your answers... Just answer me that question..

Download "Speedtest" app, by Ookla, and run a couple tests. See what you get for speeds.

[Q]HOW TO Connect To A 4G Band Galaxy SII?

A few weeks ago, I posted a thread asking why does my friend get 4G, but I don't. If you are like me in a situation like this, the process is simple. In my area, there are 4G and Edge bands that phones connect to. My phone persistently connected to the edge band while my friend connects to the 4G. So lets get to the point shall we.
If you are having problems like me try this:
Go to your settings, wireless and network, mobile networks, and then select network mode. (After doing some research about GSM and WCDMA, I found out that GSM (3G aka edge) was slower than WCDMA (the newer technology 3G).
Select WCDMA. (For me it took a while so don't worry. If it does take too much time then select WCDMA + GSM.) You are going to have to select it anyway when you are done if you don't automatically connect to 4G.
When you select the combination, your phone should reconnect to your carrier provider and you should get 4G like me.
Oh. F.Y.I. T-Mobile doesn't actually have 4G. It's just a fast 3G network called HSPA, but they still display the 4G symbol when you have it. Hope it helps somebody.

not "technically" but id say hspa gets the job done... except wen u run out of ur 5gb of data... which i did... n now they slowed me down till the end of billing cycle... what sucks is... my hspa is faster than wifi connection wifi is slow as hellllllll....

No. It's not really 4G. Just a faster 3G Network. It is really fast though.

I don't know if you still have the sticker, but look on top of your Galaxy S2 and there should be a sticker that reads "Qualcomm 3G HSDPA". Sorry folks, correction HSDPA*

No company has "4G", none of them meet the official requirements of 4G. Just because your phone says 4G doesn't mean it actually is. Just because David Copperfield made it LOOK like he made a Boeing-747 disappear doesn't mean he ACTUALLY did

Well sort of. Wiki mentions it but glazes over it a bit. It's a reference anyone can change of course so take it with a grain of salt. ITU relaxed their position about this time last year to include "evolving technologies" of which WiMax, LTE and HSPDA are all included.
So the reality is, all the carriers can make the 4G claim and sleep comfortably and the extended reality is, the speeds are all showing that next evolutionary step in speed, even if the technology as it sits today is just that. Steps toward LTE Advanced and whatever WiMax is calling their next version. As a TMobile customer, and one that it seems will stay with the TMobile branding it's unfortunate they are using a technology that has it's limits. But I'm getting 10-15Mbps on occasion and solid 7 to 8 Mbps speeds generally speaking so I'm not complaining. Until the carriers clear more spectrum what "G" it is isn't relevant to me. With 2Gbps, or even 5Gb soft caps I don't need to get to my ceiling any faster than I am now.

Well technically it is a quarter of the speed. If you are going by 100mbs defintion.
By industry standards , marketing, its 4g. But the term is meaningless. It is way faster than previous generation of phones.
So whatever, I'm calling 4g.

Multi-channel HSPA is capable of ~40Mbps, which is damned fast.
Call it what you want; technically LTE ir WiMax is 4g, but if it runs as fast as the others, who cares what it's called?

You would think at those speeds you'll burn through your data cap in days. I don't get the requirement for faster data speeds let alone just for minor things.

Until a few months ago NONE of the technologies out were 4g, not LTE, not WiMax, not HSAP+ ...BUT the ITU (International Telecommunications Union), which are the people that say what's what in the wireless industry, folded under the marketing schemes of the big 4 here in the U.S. and said that TECHNICALLY NOW LTE, WiMax, and HSPA+ All count as 4g. So...yes they have 4g. A few months ago they didn't. Now they do.

So what was the trick again? lol

Yeah... mine says 4G also.. odd your sticker is different... As for hitting your cap faster, that doesnt really make much sense since it is just loading faster not loading more..
I have no issues calling it 4G since I get about 19-25 in the late hours pf the night and no less than 13 during prime time hours.

Wikipedia is an administrator-approved peer-editing system. For one, there are references to back up the claims made, two, you can't just click "edit" then put in whatever you want. A Wiki admin approves all edits made, so bogus stuff can't just be easily added. (Sorry, I'm just sick an tired of people claiming wiki is a poor source for valid information, when in reality it's one of the most largest and beneficial information sources on the internet. Again, sorry, didn't mean that as an attack on you lol)
Either way, yes, our "4G" is fast, but in reality it's not in comparison to what it should be. And for those of you with worries about your data caps, these will be removed in due time. It becomes easier and easier to reach those caps without any effort at all (Google Music being a perfect example), carriers won't have a choice but to remove data caps, especially with carriers like sprint still offering unlimited data (for now lol)

I just switched from Sprint 3G to Verizon 4G LTE. I was really hoping for a big improvement. I "kinda" got what I wanted except in the one place I am at the most....work. I spend 9-12 hours a day at work in a factory and the Verizon signal just barley makes it where I sit all day. I basically don't get 4G unless I go outside. Sprint was killing me with 20Kbps download speed and I got tired of it. Now I may be stuck in the same with Verizon. On the bright side Verizon does work very well outside of my work, unlike Sprint.
I did install a custom rom with latest updates. Android Revolution 4.0.1

What's the question?

It's the nature of the beast. In many factories, you're going to run into quite a few things that are going to impair RF transmissions. Some frequency bands may propagate better than others, but you need to bear in mind that it's already a suboptimal environment.

Sprint LTE, yes. Verizon LTE is on the 700mhz band.. so it should be better in buildings.

I don't know much either, but I doubt they would do anything about it unless there's a profit involved

Being at work.....doesn't that mean you should not be using your phone for personal use? I know everybody does it but too many people abuse the time clock.....
that being said, maybe you should not be bummed that your phone doesn't work at crazy speeds, this way you can be great full for the job you keep in this tough economy.
Not trying to sound like a d!ck but complaints like this are really unneeded and undeserving.

14 days if you don't want to be locked in via contract.
Domiciles tend to be less shielded than factories.

Only solution I could suggest is to use wifi calling if you have wifi at your work place. Thats what I do since I have no reception at all in my cubicle.

Verizon doesn't do wifi calling. That said, I think the poster has a data issue, not a voice signal issue (they are separate for us).

I'm with Verizon, I have no issue at all making calls on wifi...maybe you mean something else

Wifi calling is when your cell signal routes through your wifi

You would probably get a much better signal with the RAZR. I was getting 2 bar of 4G LTE in my basement, where my Galaxy Nexus could barely keep a 3G signal. Unfortunately the radios on the Galaxy Nexus suck, so that may have something to do with it.

Looked in General and Q&A and can't find anyone complaining about 4G reception. This stupid phone doesn't hold 4G indoors ANYWHERE I go. My Galaxy S2 never had problems like this. This phone is always switching to EDGE. ALWAYS!!! Really causing me to regret my purchase. Also, my "4G" speed test has never gone faster than 3.5-4Mbps down, where my GS2 averaged 9-15Mbps. Only flaw I have had with this phone. I read Verizon users are having the same issues with their GS3. This damn phone annoys the hell outta me and hope the Galaxy Note doesn't have the same radio as this because I can't wait to replace this phone. I love it and how fluid the ui is, but I pay for the 10GB data plan, but this idiotic phone doesn't allow me to use it. And I've had it replaced twice. Gonna replace the SIM later today and see if that helps. So, am I the only one? And I live in an excellent 4G area according to T-Mobile.

This may not help, but could be worth a try.
Open the dialer and enter *#*#4636#*#*
Once u hit the last * it should open up a menu. Select Device Information, scroll down a little and there should be a box to click on. Choose WCDMA Only and see if you can get onto 4G now. If you can get 4G, you can go back and choose WCDMA preffered and see if it acts ok on this setting.
Worth a try at least. Good luck!

I'm having some similar issues. I can get 4g indoors, but seems to switch around without even moving the phone. I'm wondering if it's a "feature" of the SGS3. Uses less battery to hold EDGE/3g and then when it detects data transfer, switches to 4g... I dunno.
That being said, you can try installing the new OTA which has a new radio. Or if your rooted etc, flash the radio zip Wild put up. I've noticed some improvements with signal strength, but it still seems to swap based on what I'm doing.
Anybody more knowledgeable have any info on this "smart data management"?

The phone will only stay at 4G during data transfers, while idle it'll drop back to 3G. I don't think it should be dropping to edge/2G though.

Yes I did and thank you for bringing that to attention , I don't know how I let that slip my mind, I used that setting to fix my last two Samsung phones, Nexus S and GS2. They both would do this just not as bad as the GS3, now the phone holds its 4G/3G much better with WCDMA only turned on. Now I have zero gripes about this phone.
Anyone know what the difference is between HSPA:10 and HSPA+15? Is the latter the HSPA42 T-Mobile advertises?

If you used WiMAX 4G non-LTE and do NOT have LTE available in your area...

I upgraded from the ET4G which has WiMax 4g. There is a 4g tower literally 1/4 mile down my street and i was getting an average of 8-10Mb/sec download speed under Wimax.
I ASSUMED... (thats where i went wrong) I purchased the Note 2, and thought there was the 3g, 4g WiMAX, and 4g LTE modes/antennas. Nope. So now that I have the Note 2 without LTE in my area, I'm stuck with HORRIBLE 3g (CDMA) speeds. No more HD Netflix or even a reliable connection to Pandora (high quality).
I live in South Bay Silicon valley area in California. Now I have to WAIT until LTE rolls out before I can use a data connection speed over 100k/sec. I cant believe they made this phone without the ability to connect to WiMAX 4g. I suppose WiMAX 4g will trashed once LTE rolls out and that would be a waste of hardware in the phone but there was no warning in the tech specs or Sprint reps.
Just warning to all out there wanting to upgrade the the Galaxy Note 2 where LTE is not available but have WiMAX speeds. The phone will NOT pick up WiMAX 4G. I would have waited to upgrade. =(

You could always switch back to the epic 4G Touch until LTE arrives and use the note 2 as a WiFi device.

Very true, I was just hoping to sell it for $200 and make some money back off the the beastly Note 2 price (on contract when purchased). Its so sad, I'm so used to looking at the 720p screen, it makes the E4GT look so much like a girly phone. =) I read some articles on how fast the 4g LTE should be coming out with wider coverage, I guess LTE is supposed to cover just about everywhere that has 3G coverage. Just a matter of time.Since the Optimus G and the Note 2 are being released, they are pushing LTE as "quick as they can" supposedly.

I checked as best I could. I went into the phones hidden menu using the MSL code and checked the settings. There is no mode for 4G and 4G LTE separately. Sprint tech support also confirmed this (which I don't believe the crap they say). I gave them a hard time because I had a very hard time believing that that phone would not pickup standard 4G.
The app called 'PHONE INFO' on the market show you all your options for radio settings also.

A simple, quick google search would have confirmed that this phone does not have a WiMAX antenna... Samsung tried the best they could to standardize the hardware - not only across carriers but globally as well.

Thats why I used the words 'I ASSUMED' It makes sense to have WiMAX built in. A normal person would assume it would hence the posting. Just a warning thread.
You wouldn't think to check if, 4G would work on a 4G LTE phone.

Not to piss on ur rant bit its been said a million times by sprint and everyone else no new wimax devices wayyy back before evo lte launched its kinda a no Brainer, that this device wouldn't have wimax jus sayin

Obviously my fault with not keeping up with tech specs. I stayed on T-mobile after switching from Sprint just phone their line of phones and recently came back to Sprint. GSM is alot more simple.

Even though I was basically without 4G since the inception, I am glad that they didnt include a WiMax radio on this phone. It is a battery leach (so it was always turned off) and I would not want to change the battery life of this phone ever. I am right now on 1 day 5 hours with about 15% left on this battery charge.

Yes, WiMAX was a leach! At least the specs for battery life are close to 3g battery life. Something i can look forward to.

Not claiming the validity of the thread but I only have one problem which is the OP calling WiMax a standard 4G. So far only LTE Advanced (not a regular LTE) is capable of such standard.

I was thinking about correcting that but i figure people got the idea.... ill go ahead and change that...

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the sprint s3 the same way? Lte only, no wimax?
I'm sorry about this, but honestly this was a no Brainer. Once sprint signed on with lte, wimax was done. To expect them to put a battery draining radio they had no intention of continuing with (known for a very long time) would be unrealistic.

Ah, oh well. I should have kept up with the High speed specs of LTE and WiMAX. I just went out and bought the lastest and greatest. I'm your typical "USER". I did some searching. obviously AFTER the fact and it seems I'm not the only one which make me feel a bit better about getting flamed.

It's not a big deal, and in fact, I'm a bit surprised you didn't get hammered sooner and harder. I'm thinking these forums are not as active or less forgiving than say the development forums.
Enjoy your new toy, I'm jealous but I'm holding off till development is further along.
