4.2.2 kernel will not boot 4.2.1 roms or hybrid roms like CM due to need for newer gpu drivers!

I came from sgs, so I never used Trinity, which I believe had a nexus s version.

On Vibrant, Trinity was DoW.
But there are more SGS flavors than stars in the sky, so that might not change anything

If you are benchmarking be sure to force gpu rendering and edit file in /system/lib/egl and delete first line totally, so only the second line stays (thanks bigxie )..
Here are another 2 build.prop tricks your rom might or might not use:
ro.kernel.android.checkjni=0
windowsmgr.max_events_per_sec=240
Paste anywhere in build.prop. it won't change benchmarks, but real feel.

512mhz gpu oh my..hope that this doesnt burn up anyone's phone lol..that said probably gonna test boot it.
Maybe it's just me, but I'm not noticing any GPU performance increase with Inferno512. Playing games and running benchmarks seems to yield the same results (CDMA LTE version).

Are you sure it works without altering clock.c? Until I changed that file my device was reporting 1.2ghz but it was still super slow.
EDIT: nvm, you're right. Changing that would change clock.c as well. I don't plan on using the default tables, but it's a good place to start if you want to stick to default values. I know this thing can do more than 1.2ghz.

Anyone could do it easily, but I"ll see what I can do. I've gotten ahold of roto's initrd, I just need to grab the source from Samsung. I don't get home until very late in the evening so I can't promise that someone won't beat me to it!

Looking forward to seeing how much difference this makes, my n900 i clock to 1.2ghz from the default 600 clock (downclocked cortex A7 @ 600mhz default). so pretty sure the tab should do 1.4 or so faultlessly?
Looking forward to GSM revisions, hopefully Roto may even include this in his roms later (well i'm wishing ^^).

had my first lockup with it trying to play 1080p file in vplayer since vplayer don't use gpu to render. But basic video player plays fine just guessing voltage is a little high but who knows still awesome: )

I just bought a Galaxy tab and I've never built an Android Kernel before but I spent yesterday tearing through the how-to from the CM guys. I'm familiar with C pretty well, so I was glad to see that I'd be building C and not some Java I'd be totally illiterate to. I'm hoping stepping up to these crazy ARM cores from my usual embedded work with AVR's and 32mhz ARMs shouldn't have too terrible a learning curve.
Anyone who's done kernel building for android before: Is it pretty much a straight forward build process? For some of the embedded work I've done with RTOS systems I've spent days digging through memory maps, linker files and assembly code to trouble shoot issues... Just curious if those will be useful skills for android?

I actually used the Verizon kernel configuration, since there is no sprint one. I think it should work on Verizon.. make a kernel backup first!
The only difference could be in the initrd but I have no way of knowing until someone tries it.

Finally out of beta... a public release.
LoStKernel does not claim to get RID of LoS, but it does significantly cut down on it. Over the past 2-3 weeks, numerous people have downloaded it, and I can say that it has had maybe a 5% reported LoS rate, and of those people, they had a significant reduction in the amount of LoS they had.
Now the kernel isn't all about LoS though, its fast and stable, and your phone will be smooth and snappy. That's the goal after all isn't it? something we can use?
There are 2 builds of LoS Kernel, the Standard build, and the Experimental Build. The standard build can always be considered stable, on the other hand, the Experimental build is where features go for testing before they are committed to the standard branch. Also, the Experimental build is cutting edge, overclocking the CPU 1400mhz and 1600mhz as well as Voltage control and Setcpu interface support. There is also Gpu O/C support. (Terminal command support only at this time.)
Both Builds are updated pretty regularly so check ACS regulary for updates...

alright guys, ive been flashing roms since forever the second i got my one x, however their are 2 amazing kernels that i cant choose in between.
Francos r6 and faux123 kernel. both kernels are with no doubt the best out there at the moment.
i am not getting average battery life on francos and faux's seem very stable with UV control. so anyone used both and would like to offer any advice? im really stuck here

I've been using Faux's kernels since Sensation, i've tried many over the years but he always hits the nail on the head everytime. Was glad when he started dev'ing on the One X.
Good power consumption, battery life and governors not to mention some of the nice tech he's brought us like ZRam for example. By the way he still doesn't have the phone yet so if you feel generous then go donate to him so we can get even better kernels!

I tried all kernels and Faux's has the most battery life and is the coolest one.
How far were you able to undervolt? I can go -150mV without freezes, but it freezes on -175mV (I just lowered them all). So I'm running with -125mV to be safe and it looks like most of the overheating is gone now
i personally think franco kernel is good.

No one is preventing them from having a side project... Where they could put changes they don't agree with each other.
I just think it's a waste of potential and we'll never have the best kernel/software/whatever, until the best devs on their particular fields join forces. There will always be so much to choose from... Yes, choice is good, but sometimes, there's just too much choice...

I just under-volted 100mV above 1Ghz and -75mV below, which I think it is quite safe.
The only way to properly under-volt is to lock the CPU to a specific frequency, take away 25mV and stress test with benchmark and games. Keep on doing this until we found the minimum voltage the phone lock up, than we can increase the voltage up 25mV and this will be the lowest stable voltage for that frequency.
However, since currently there is not a reliable way to control max and min frequencies with Tegra 3, it is difficult to do the above.
Anyway, -150mV is very good result, I don't think the CPU can take more than that especially on the higher frequencies.
You can néver harm a CPU(chip) when undervolting it. You'll only end up making it unstable when it doesn't get enough power to do it's job.
I tried faux kernel and uv quite much but still overheating exists.. and battery on franco isnt the best for sure.

A lack of compiler warnings doesn't make the compiled code any better though.
I prefer Faux's b3. Nothing has come close in battery life yet.

Yup, but franco did include many tegra kernel updates, which somehow result on better performance. I noticed great battery on faux kernel

OK, the long and short of it is - this GNexus is unstable even at stock clock speeds. It reboots periodically (this is true on stock JB and CM10).
On CM10, I've managed to get logcats (which reveal nothing consistent), but more usefully (maybe) is last_kmesg. It tells me:
Unhandled fault: imprecise external abort
So - can somebody tell me a way to make this device more stable? I am pondering underclocking. Or changing the governor. Or changing the voltage (although, I don't know which way to go: up or down!).
I guess I'm looking for whatever tricks overclockers would use to increase stability - except, leaving it at the stock clock speed

Well. If you get reboots , increase the voltages by 25 mv. See if that helps.

The lower voltages allow less use of battery, but if they are too low (reboot, freeze), you should increase it a little
If you're having reboot issues even on stock, it sounds like a hardware issue and needs to be replaced.

Cm10 has the option in "performance" settings to change your voltages

Switch to the Team EOS rom (nightly or stable) , use the latest Franco Kernel(latest) with gpu at 384 and finally underclock to 1ghz instead of the stock 1.2. I am currently using the dyninteractive governor.
I experience less heat, way fewer reboots, better 4g, things are still snappy and you can still speed up animations to .5x the speed in developer options. Oh and the extra battery life is nice.
Someone also recommended using only one band with WiFi. I use 2.4 only. It can be found in the advanced setting in wireless.

Manufacturer warranty, insurance. Your carrier should be willing to swap the phones out especially if you just got it. Running jbsourcery 2.3.6 and Franco milestone. I've had a total of 4 reboot period on this device since it was debuted.

This is the unlocked international gsm phone which has no US warranty. Obviously if I could get it fixed for free I would.

It would reboot by itself when it became too warm. Franco's lastest 282 kernel seems to have solve this heat/self reboot issue for me. I can use 1.3 ghz without a problem. I couldn't do the stock 1.2ghz on the stock kernel without it rebooting by itself. It is also super smooth and fast.

Really guys our defy is no(!) S3 or oneX please dont expect it to be as fast as one.
Also: dont be angry at people, if their settings dont work out on your phone, there are a lot of little differences between our phones. So find your personal best and post it, so others can try it

I think you are not aware of the fact that lately members have started expecting too much on this forum from defy after custom kernels came in action. after every build is released by Quarx people just keeping whining "the phone is bit slow" "perfomance is not that good" " its not fsster". So obv someone needs to give them a reality check. The aggressive end is nothing but truth. Shouldnt be hard to digest.

I've noticed, that people are behaving like this.
It's not cool.
But what does this have to do with my thread?
Was it just like: All dudes who come here, be aware, we only have a middle class phone.
Or was it like: Dear Esok, you are to blame, cause you are thinking that way.
I like the Defy and i hope, that one day it will be possible for me to experience my defy, with cm10/cm10.1 which has an ui as fast as cm7.
But i am willing to wait for it. My experiences aren't that high, until we have 3.0 Kernel, I'm pretty sure, quarx is able to do that, but if he wont, its ok, hes a person too.
So I think, you meant other guys, with your aggressive ending and there really is nothing to argue about, isn't it?

I think you aren't aware about this simple question, its under what settings do you think your defy runs well. If people think that means we expect it to run faster then a super computer then I do not think this a place where everything has/ can be(en) spelt out. Just because one guy said it somewhere on some thread doesn't mean it applies here as well.
@esok- put up a statuary sign saying this will not make your phone a super computer, but it helps you figure out the optimum settings for your need.
@ngu I tried using your settings on jb28 with kernel 29/11 jellyx but phone was just too cranky! Tried finding one for myself but got tired after a few attempts and re flashed the quarx kernel
Maybe should try it on slim!!

Btw: At the Moment i am on 28th jellyx and 28cmx using brazilianwax and bfs... is supersnappy, but i get lots of freezes and reboots, thinking about going back too.
Quarx kernel is really More stable isnt it?

Today, it's just plain and simple antiquated.
InteractiveX, bfs, overcolcked 1200. I m in cmx 28/11, jelly X 3/12. Awesome performance with no reboots also great battery standby.
