Today...the unthinkable happened.
I dropped my phone from about 3 feet!
Luckily, I had a case on it, and there wasn't any damage to it...cosmetically. When I went to make sure there wasn't any internal damage, I tried a SetCPU stress test, a quadrant benchmark, an antutu benchmark, and a Linpack benchmark.
SetCPU was stable, quadrant was higher than before, and linpack was about the same. However, when I got to Antutu, my score was about 1000 less than before.
Before, I got RAM=~950, CPU Integer=~1825, and CPU Float=~1427. However, now I get RAM = ~700, CPU Integer = ~1350, and Cpu Float = ~1150. Everything else was about the same.
I should also note that at the time of testing, the phone was pretty hot (100 degrees Fahrenheit). The original scores were achieved on 80-90 degrees. Would you say this is a coincidence (and it was caused by heat), or hardware damage?
Coincidence.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I can run quadrant twice, doing nothing between tests but push the start test button, and get two completely different scores.
It was the heat after all. I let it cool down to 80 degrees fahrenheit, and it's back to the normal 6000+ scores. I feel so relieved now.
Did you pick up all the binary bits from the floor? Maybe some bits fell out so phone is still busy looking for the missing bits.

My HTC One M8 fell by 2 feet. On the corner; has hard shell.
After this, the phone was very slow. The kind of slowliness I do not try to dig, and just reboot. Reboot took over 5mn. Then, phone kept screen off; I knew the phone was working: received a phone call; power button was working fine because long press on it could light the flash (Xposed customisation); volume buttons also work fine. After long press power+volume, I could reboot, and during reboot, the screen came one again. Screen could turn on each time I rebooted. After boot was completed, if I let screen timeout and go of, no way to turn it on again.
If I don't let screen go off, and keep it busy, and try to use my phone:
- background image animation lags a lot
- tactile screen works almost fine
- apps are responsive, but viewing on screen lags a lot.
- all system tools report a good iddle time, low load, and available CPU and RAM.
- the whole phone behaves like when it's over-heating, but temperature was low. The problem was perfectly reproductable during several hours.
- system behavior could also be compared toa computer working with full software rendering, without any hardware acceleration. CPU and RAM feel good, CPU reports iddle time, but graphics lag.
Power button was working fine on hardware side because i could use it to force reboot, and switch light on. But power button could not turn screen on. Hardware of screen was working fine, because after reboot, i could get a working screen. But, how could a simple fall produce a software issue ?
I had replaced my battery myself some time ago; so, I know that I have not glued it the way it's done at the manufactory; also I had to break tapes, and could not replace them. I have placed all screws correctly. My thoughts have been:
- CPU or GPU are not strictly overheating, but, maybe their physical connection to heat sink is bad
- maybe the battery moved a bit, and is pressing against something, deforming a heat connection, or pressing hard against a sensible component (and alter it's value)
- inertia could have pulled a cable out of it's plug; maybe there is a bad connection somewhere. Power lines had poor connexion providing too little current (or undervoltage); data line disconnected.
If the GPU is partly broken, system can fall back in software rendering, and a broken GPU may not imply a loss of screen; just switching to an other video mode.
After leaving the phone off for 1h, and rebooting 12 times, phone works perfectly fine again.
There is no way this could be a software issue.
It was a hardware issue, that had very little impact on something, and fixed itself after some hours.
May not be GPU itself, but really thinck it was "video related".

So I just got the Galaxy Nexus (upgraded from the Nexus S) and just after the first day of use (no heavy workload, wifi or GPS) this thing became painfully hot. We're talking touch it to your skin and *ouch* hot. Strangely the massive heat output seems to be limited to just the top quarter of the device. Also note that it takes only about 10min until it reaches 'unusable' status.
Does anyone else have experience with this problem? Admittedly I was warned by the provider I got it from that they had had feedback from customers about it's excessive heat output and other people I know have also commented to the same affect. But I never thought it would be quite this bad. I could fry an egg on this thing. Considering my Nexus S never had this issue - this is disappointing. Are we talking hardware design fail? Or perhaps a bad batch in my country?
If this was an iPhone they'd be headlines going on about 'heat-gate' and Larry Page coming out saying that we're 'cooling it wrong' lol
the nexus does get abit hot around the camera area, but it shouldnt be THAT hot lol.. what are the ambient tempreatures around where you're using the phone?

Not that hot - maybe 20-25c
Perhaps monitor battery temp with an app, it won't give you a precise indication of your processor temp, but there should be a correlation. The phone does get warm around the camera area, but never painfully so (for me). Was your AOS usage abnormally high?
I think the OP is overreacting just a little, if it burned you then the phone would have melted
Anyways, its perfectly normal. the OMAP4 chipset runs really hot, I read somewhere that it operates normally between 85-105 degrees Fahrenheit.
Here it says that the OMAP4 platform has a temperature range of -40° to 85°C. I think thats overstating it, but its all there

Well let me put it this way. It's hot enough for me to consider claiming on warranty. No phone should generate that much heat right next to your head/ear. That's unusable in real terms (at least with this particular one). And i've had my fair share of android phones in the past to compare...

The Tegra2 chipset runs VERY hot when overclocked as well, I've had hot experiences on both my Galaxy Tab 10.1 and my G2x, and I can also say that the OMAP4 runs hotter than that! Just offering opinion is all, it's perfectly normal for it to be running extra hot, and it happens fairly quickly.
I completely agree with you that the phone does get abnormally hot, but then again, from my experience, so does the RAZR with a sister chip in it.

Android 4.0.1, stock Nexus Galaxy, going on 2 weeks. It's in an otterbox defender case, after 1.5 hours of running video it's warm in my hands, but that's under constant workload that nearly drained the whole battery. In other words during normal operation I am not finding the serious problem you are describing. Empathy out to you.
What temps we're talking about? Mine stays at +36C +38C while browsing web/watching youtube and gets a bit (around +41C) hotter when playing games. And these temps are far from hot-to-touch.

Sometimes my GN becomes really hot too. It also happens when i'm watching hd video for a half an hour or more. Then it turns terribly hot.
mine goes to 48C and then it starts lagging like hell
Mine gets warm around the camera and earpiece. It's pretty normal, I'd say.

There are multiple threads on this, but I'll say what I've said before: it's a dual core device, it runs hot, it's not "overheating" unless your phone is crashing, shutting down, or otherwise obviously malfunctioning in some way other than getting hot.
What do you mean by "it reaches 'unusable' status" though? Are you just afraid of using it because it seems hot? Mine gets quite hot when I use it heavily...have kept it going for several hours in this state (while plugged in) with no other issues.
Mine gets hot in the same area, but it has never been that hot, just warm. My OG Droid was OCd to 1.3ghz and that literally reached 150+ degrees F quite a few times and is still fine to this day. The OMAP SoCs seem to run a bit hotter than others, but they can definitely handle the heat.

Basically out of the many smart phones i've had in the past. This is the first that I would say I would refuse to hold it up next to my ear due to the excessive heat. It's bad enough just holding it landscape to type on let alone sticking next to my head. It's really annoying considering how otherwise the interface and physical design of the device is better then anything else i've seen on the market.
I think i'm going to get one of those laser thermometers to find just what the temp on the surface of this thing actually is.

It's hot on the back of the phone like other uses have said, not the front where your ear would be (unless it is which is an entirely different problem). Plus, when your phone reaches those temps through extraneous use (videos, games), you normally wouldn't be putting it near your ear anyways. I don't see this as a huge issue. If you do something taxing, much like a computer, expect the phone to work a little bit harder and hotter.
Oh and I doubt it's hot enough to fry an egg. You would smell the plastic melt first.
I've had once when my GNex was really hot. It was when I try factory reset many times since there was a bug that factory reset does nothing in a custom rom. But I didn't know at that time. I tried reset, flash rom, reset, etc. My GNes ended up really hot.
The only time my galaxy nexus got really hot was when I was switching kernels every 2-3 days, and one kernel (I think it was one of Franco's earlier builds) made it run hot even when I wasn't using the phone that intensely. Changed the kernel, and it's never been hot since (I play games, listen to music, browse web, push notifications, etc.) I don't do much video/HD streaming though...
I have been getting that too. Around the earpiece gets warm when only slightly used. Also, I can hear a faint buzzing humming sound from there. Open the back cover..can hear it from the camera too. Is something wrong with my phone
My phone has, inconveniently, decided to start turning itself off. I take it out of my pocket, press screen on, and the phone boots fresh from the HTC logo.
Furthermore, when it finishes booting, it often incorrectly reports the battery (2% when it should be 50%). I tried looking at the battery usage (from default ICS settings) but was just presented with missing chunks in the graph.
I've been using Virtuous Quattro since it came out, and have been finding it stable. I've wiped all data and caches and reflashed, but the problem persists, so I don't think its the ROM.
I also checked the EMMC serial but its not the reportedly problematic one.
Since I now never know if my phone is even on, how much battery it has, or if I'm actually getting any calls since it probably won't ring if its not on, this is all extremely problematic and I would really appreciate any suggestions you can offer.
Cheers
It looks like system freeze and baterry leak. I have same problem on quattro RC3 (and from time to time on pre-RC4 "leak"), ie. 50% over night...
If you use power saving (auto data/wifi off, etc) then disable it.
Try also flashing RC4: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22020394&postcount=1617
or try another good working ICS ROM like Andromadus Audacity b1 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1349864
I don't think there is any other (than flashing) cure for your problem...
Cheers, I'll try that and cross my fingers. I tried another ROM before re-flashing Quatro, so I'd ruled ROM issues out when it also kept restarting, but I guess it may have just been unstable!
Also, this is a symptom of the battery failing. Our batteries might be getting to that point for heavy users.
The battery resistance increases at lower voltages within the normal operating range dramatically if enough lithium has plated from charge cycles/heat. So even tho the battery still has a sufficient voltage, it can't output enough current and the phone powers off. This might explain the low battery reading after reboot.
Luckily batteries are cheapish, if that is the problem.
Take your battery out and see if it bulges out slightly in the middle. That would confirm it.

I had a similar thing on a number of ics roms. Try upping the min sleep frequency on the cpu by one 'notch'. I also had a reboot issue during wake and increased the min cpu by a couple steps. Seems to have solved the issue. For me anyway.

Well, tried upping the min CPU, and got a new battery, problem persists.
Glad to see some success stories here, but please don't hold back if you have any further suggestions!
Maybe the points of contact from the phone to the battery are weak? I can't think of any other kind of explanation :S, this is a head-scratcher for me because i thought that everything you've done so far would have fixed the issue.
Does anyone have issues with your SGSII T989 phones having extremely high temps?
I get it when using the GPS, charging the phone while i'm talking on the phone, and doing a few other activities. It did not do this on my first purchase of the phone and i'm a bit weary of the temps as sometiems it gets quite warm!
Currently I'm on O.E. SGS II Rom w/ root, that's about it! No OC no mods or anything of that sort. (Just CWM and Root).
Any tips would be greatly appreciated, as this heat as caused me from using my phone each day more and more.
P.S. I WAS on Juggernaut Rom and then flashed back to Stock, and it was having this heating issue then, should i try to do a complete 100% wipe like on one of the development threads and start from scratch like I just got the phone from the factory again? I wiped my system using Odin and it seems to of kept my old programs, no information like games and etc. was kept however, does anyone think that might be the problem? Once again thanks!

If you are rooted you might want to try a different kernel and maybe SetCPU. I had some overheating/temp issues a while back and after I lowered my CPU a bit and set it to an Ondemand state with a profile for screen off running CPU very low when not actively in use it seemed to fix the problem.. Btw SetCPU is free for XDA users, there is a thread somewhere in the Android Hacking Apps forum..
GL
Edit: I thought it was free to xda users, I checked and cant find the thread, maybe I was wrong or they changed it..

I'm on the stock kernal, I was on the modified 1.7ghz kernal before i believe, as I could overclock over that, but i just recently stopped that and went back to stock. I was and still am expecting the phone to malfunction on me sometime soon lol. It's been a really reliable phone so far! My G1 and Mytouch 3G slide (gf's phone) took soo many dumps on me while I used it. Each of those phones were probably sent back 5-8 times and they were kept completely stock for a while!
Back on subject though. Any kernals that go well with the factory rom? I don't favor any aftermarket roms right now as they're not stable enough for my usage IMO.
I have heat problems but I've always had the stock kernel...

Undervolt at the stock clock if you want to lower temps. However, charging will always increase heat especially if you are using the phone at the same time, and depending on ambient temps.
Dude my moms sgsII literally got fried because it heated up once. She was using her phone normally and all of a sudden it started heating up. She kept using it and the next day the phone won't turn on, charge or get into download mode. It looked like what a hard brick would look like. So I just returned it for a HTC one S.
Btw she was on full stock.
My phone heats up a lot because I'm down south with 90-95 degree temps and I keep phone in the car dock by the windshield but it never failed on me.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA
I thought it was a well fixable issue. Guess not? lol... Either way, everytime my batt temps rise, i notice i get 40-45C and i start to get worried. So if i'm in a car, i'd just put it next to the AC vent while the car's running and temps get down to about 25C and i'm good again. I just don't feel comfortable with the phone anymore like I use to. It never did this before, why now??
I have an app that warns when it goes over 40 and it happens daily. I was downloading torrents one time and it keeps the screen active while downloading and the thing got like 62 celsius before I realized what happened. It almost burnt my hand lol. if your ever in sunlight or palming the phone while using gps on 4g.

Are you sure I shouldn't worry? I mean, I don't want solder points falling off due to too high of a temp. Then again these temps don't even reach 100C yet. I've got the same app too probably, it's a battery monitor that tells u when the phone gets too hot. mine's goes off everytime i'm around 40+

Yep, I use GPS and often. It's just so much easier than guessing your way off a piece of paper. But yeah, like you the phone gets soo hottttttt. I have to always put the phone to my AC vent.
It's normal to a point.
These are serious computers we have.
Think of the old P486's back in the day, those things needed huge heat sinks and some even had fans
our phones which is what, 4x the cpu power and not only no heat sink but everything is squished together inbetween a hot screen and a hot battery
That being said, I use a program called A-see, which is to watch my security cameras while out.
And if I forget to close it out (Actually exit the program) It will keep running and running and eventually probably fry my phone
lets put it this way, I will actually start to feel it in my jeans pocket, it gets that hot.
Also I have a program which will alert me if my phone gets to 130 degrees F
And will automatically shut the phone down if it gets to 140
overheat protection or something
I had this issue where whenever I try to charge my phone it would overheat to the point unbearable to touch I went back to stock flash different roms in the end i exchanged it it was still under warranty
I've read somewhere that others are having the same issue I'm experiencing. The phone gets progressively warm to the touch as u get closer to the home button. I think it got lost in the forum break up but I was wondering if its worth exchanging while I still can or is this normal for the s3?

It's pretty much normal phone is very thin is very powerful there's nothing to absorb the heat.
I have had mine replaced once already, but not for overheating. Both phones I have had get the same amount of hotness in the area you describe, but I don't think its a cause for concern. I'm running overclocked at 1.8GHz right now and haven't noticed it getting any hotter. You should be just fine.
My Galaxy S3 i747m from Rogers run quite warm as well... After some Counter Strike Portable for about an hour, my phone is pretty warm especially on the front of the glass...
The back is pretty warm as well.
I use the widget Battery Solo from Google Play store to check my phone's internal temperature and it hit around 46 degC (pretty high for a phone lol)
Running all stock: ROM, CPU speeds etc..
My old Captivate never hit more than 35 degC even under some gaming..
Having a phone that is thin and faster than my 2010 MSI Wind netbook is probably the trade off for the heat. I mean on my MSI Wind, there are fan and vents.. On the S3 there is definitely no fans and no vents. Not to mention passive cooling since the phone is practically a complete Plastics build....
If the S3 has more metal especially on the outer housing (battery cover for e.g.), then the metal piece could act as a passive cooling solution...
***I just checked on eBay, and there are aluminum battery replacement covers for the Galaxy S3 all variants. The aluminum 3rd party covers will maintain the Galaxy S3's thickness so all your cases would fit.
BUT IN THIS CASE, the cover will not act as a very effective passive cooling solution due to the interior of the batter cover is covered with plastic, and only the outer layer has a very thin piece of aluminum plate.
Technically though, the aluminum battery cover from eBay may give the phone a slightly more solid build... Not to mention it comes in different colors as well... I have already ordered the Lime Green for my White GS3 ^_^
Try flashing a different kernel. I prefer using Ktoonsez's kernel, but it's totally up to you.
But as mentioned above, the device getting hot is normal, since it has to hold a massive screen with thin design. I wouldn't expect too much difference.
Thanks guys.

Your sig says you are using AOKP. I had the same observation (phone gets warm and sometimes hot) when using both the ICS and the JB AOKP versions. I have cpuspy installed and it shows the 1512 Hz being used quite often on the AOKP builds compared to say the stock sammy ROM. This in my opinion contributes to the phone getting warm.
I do not believe this is really an issue per se - it might be just that the AOKP kernel deals with CPU scaling freq a bit differently.
The stock Sammy kernel does a great job of utilizing the lower freqs which makes the phone run real cool.

I have met the same phenomenon on my new S3 with a battery I had to recharge twice a day...
I think to have found a solution, look at \parameters\battery. You will distinguish the percentage of consumption of each application in use. And in my case, it was the application "Multimedia" which consumed up to 60%. We can force a complete stop. What I did. Since the opening of a photo takes just a little longer, but my battery is 48 hours and without overheating ...
Ya mine too gets hot at about 43ºC, while playing games... rest is fine.... its slim design is the main cause I beleive. ... nothing to worry....

This issue already discussed before. It is quite normal for a device to get some heat. Anyway, I think there is a big difference between warm and hot. If your device really gets HOT, then it is a problem. My device gets warm as well as you described, but I wouldn't say it gets hot or uncomfortable to hold. I think the temperatures quite similar to my SGS3.
CPUs and GPUs put out heat. Batteries put out heat. The more intensive the activity (particularly watching video, gaming, internet use and GPS) the more heat will be generated. This is a fact with all tablets, and computers in general. I'd think it was strange if the device didn't get warm somewhere. Heat on the left side is completely normal, although not sure what component (CPU, battery, etc.) is located there.
Now its impossible to tell what OP means exactly by "warm" or "hot" as this are not quantitive in any way. It shouldn't get hot enough to be uncomfortable (or even hurt) to hold in any way. Excessive heat may be an indicator of a faulty battery or some other hardware defect. But usually not. And the device will shut itself down long before a temperature is reached, that will hurt anything (if that is what you are worried about).
There are ways for the system to tell you the temperature, but I think its only at one location (CPU?) which may not be the problem area. So measuring this way may have limted usefulness in real life.
That is the location of the cpu unit so I wouldn't worry about it unless it gets very disconcertingly hot.

Im using the Sansung OEM cover. Holding it in portrait mode, mine gets "warm" on the left side near the edge... but only when its in my pocket and its in sleep mode and wifi is turned off. Kinda fels like my BlackBerry when its polling for a tower, it gets real warm. I have a N5110 wifi no radio so trying to determine why the warm up.
Regards,
Heat "problem"?

I was reading on the Note 8 the other day and started noticing that the left side of the tablet gets pretty warm/hot. Is it just me or does anyone else have this issue? The rest of the tablet remains cool- just the left side around the middle.

My Galaxy Note 8 has this problem. I installed an app which read the temperature and it reaches 40°C when I play video games. It has the power saving mode on. Is it normal? I'm worried about this

i've installed diagnosis app to check the temp, mine reaches ~40C(i think this is the battery temp) when i play also. so i think many of us is experiencing this *____*
Just with normal use the left side of my unit is getting annoyingly warm. Hopefully they can fix this with an update or something. I'm experiencing this on stock, anyone on custom software experiencing this too?

Hey thanks for all your input guys. It's good to know I'm not the only one experiencing these problems. So far, I don't think it's bothering me to the point that I wish to call Samsung up for a replacement. It does get a bit warmer especially if I have the pen out and writing some notes. I do also understand it's more than likely that the cpu is located there but I've never had a warming problem w/ other smartphones and tablets I've had.
Either way, thanks for all the input!
I agree

I agree with you, my father's got an iPad mini and the gadget doesn't present warming problems and battery life is much better. Do you think all Note 8 devices present the same problem? I'm thinking seriously of replace mine for a brand new Note 8.0 but if it presents the same problem, I'll be wasting my time...
