Terrible Sound on Cyanogenmod - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey im facing a very bad sound and audio quality in cyanogenmod 7.1 stable for my desire z. sound is distorted and very pitchy. its not clear and i have had brilliant sound on stock rom and other sense roms. is there any way to change the sound playback to stock rom? or any other fix for this?

Did you do a full wipe when you installed cyanogenmod? I had issues with sound quality and issues with voice quality during calls as well and i'm pretty sure it was because i didn't do a full wipe.
To do a full wipe:
1. Always make sure you backup your current ROM before doing this.
2. From CWM do a factory reset.
3. Format /system through the mounts and storage option in CWM.
4. Wipe the Dalvik Cache through the advanced settings menu in CWM.
5. Install CM 7.1.0 again on your phone which has now been fully wiped .
That should just about cover it.

i actually did do a full wipe and i can try this again. but can u tell me if i reinstall the rom, can i get every setting, app and contact pictures etc back?

If you did a full wipe then you have already gotten all your settings, apps, and pics back once. Unless your lying about doing a wipe...
what ever the case use SuperwipeG2+ http://www.mediafire.com/?o8npy8mg421r2

no when i first installed cyanogenmod, i used wipe and started with new. now i need to wipe again so im asking that how to backup everything to get to this place back again as its been long since i have been on this rom and i have done a lot with my phone

You can use titanium backup to backup all your apps (and their data) so that you can restore them later.

[Q] 3G/Data Not working on Oxygen RC7 (Gingerbread)

Hello,
I've recently installed Oxygen on my Desire. And it was working flawlessly untill a few days back, when my Data/3G stopped working all together.
I inserted my SIM card into an X10i and 3G was working on that phone. But on my Desire, even though all setting are turned on, nothing seems to be working ?
Any help ? As i have very limited knowledge or rooting and custom ROMs, there might be something that i might be doing wrong ?
Thanks
Did you do a full wipe, data/factory rest, cache and dalvik cache when flashing the rom?
Also have you tried resetting or manual reading the apn settings? And do you use any app to control data connection?

1. Yes I did all of those things specifically, while flashing a new ROM.
2. I have tried resetting the APN settings. The thing is that my phone wont even detect that my Carrier has 3G or even Edge for that matter. Whereas, in the same area when I inserted my SIM into an X10i (or any other phone, just for comparison) it worked flawlessly.
3. No I dont use any app. I did install a widget to switch on/off data from my home screen but since it didnt work i uninstalled it. If I were to guess since when Im having this problem, I'd say somewhere around this widget incident. Its possible it has some connection. But I already uninstalled it.
Thanks for your time.
If it was a third party widget it might have messed it up. Make a nandroid and do and full wipe without reflashing to see if you get a connection. Beforehand you can back up your apps with titanium backup so that you can restore them on the fresh install if that fixed the data problem.

It was a third party widget, actually. Since Im new to the process, could you expand on "Make a nandroid and do and full wipe without reflashing", or perhaps, direct me to a place where I can see how its done.
Ill download the titanium back up from the market and back-up the apps. Wouldn't it reload the settings and the apps when I restore the backup, and possible the bug too ? Assuming the widget messed up some sort of setting or somethin ?
First make the nandorid, to do this boot in to recovery and go to backup, from that point on it should be self explanatory. You can also use rom manager and the backup feature. Once the nandroid is done you wipe (still in recovery) data/factory reset, wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache under advanced, then hit back and reboot.
I don't think titanium will restore the "bug" because you already removed the app that probably caused it, just make sure you only backup/restore the green apps and data and check the list you restore to be sure that the switch widget isn't included.

Thanks man, it worked. I guess I have to be cautious on a Custom ROM before installing any apps, keeping in mind the compatiblity.
I have the same problem. I get no 3g icons in oxygen rc7 or in cyanogen mod7 build 32.
I have istalled both roms with full wipe of cache and dalvik. Nothing helps.
It is only green when wifi is on. If i turn it off, the netstatus is becoming grey.
It is a HTC Desire
And 3G is working perfect with Leedroid 2.3d
Wifi Issue, try out : "In wifi settings, advanced, set regulatory domain to 14 channels. I suspect what happens is that it cures the problem for those of us with channel = auto on the accesspoint."
3G Issue : Configurate manually your access points depending on your provider, it worked for a friend.
Good Luck!

[Q] HTC Desire ROM without Sense

I've just rooted my phone and now require a ROM which doesn't have sense UI, what one would be my best option?
Thanks
Anything with AOSP in the title
and CM7, cant forget that
The best vanilla Rom I have tried is redux, I found it much quicker than ginger villain.

I just tried to flash gingervillian on my phone but I think I must have made a mistake somewhere as it got to the gingervillian load screen and then just got caught in a loop where it'd just replay the animation of it. I then had to do a restore to sort my phone out.
I did follow the unlockr guide but it doesn't help that the guy is using an Evo instead of a Desire and the menu's are totally different in the Clockworkmod screen.
At one point he says you need to wipe the dalvik cache but I couldn't find this so just wiped the cache. So this might have been the problem? Also do you need to wipe anything else at this point?
You need to wipe everything, what recovery are you using - CWM or AmonRA?
I'm using the CWM recovery.
Dunno then, in AmonRA you choose 'Wipe' and all options are in there. Must be something similar in CWM
I've checked again and I have two wipe menus:
1. Wipe data/ factory reset
(under this I have: Delete all user data)
2. Wipe Cache Partition
(in this I have: Wipe cache)
Hmmm, not as many as AmonRA - find that surprising but probably better to see what someone else says

After you do the first 2 wipe's go to advanced its the last menu and do wipe dalvik cache, after that it should work fine...
Cheers

What do you mean by after I do the first two wipes?
Do I delete user data, wipe cache and also then wipe dalvik cache.
Thanks.
Yes. A "full wipe" means wiping the User data/cache/dalvik cache. So wipe all three:
1. Wipe data/ factory reset
2. Wipe Cache Partition
3. Wipe dalvik cache
The order does not matter.
Ah OK thanks.
I don't like the sound of having to 'wipe/ delete all user' data though, does this mean I'll lose all my contacts, calender entries, notes etc?
Yes, but if coming from another ROM you HAVE to do it. Do a nandroid backup before flashing a new ROM and backup any other data using Titanium Backup
I'm not coming from another ROM but regardless I'll do the Titanium backup and do the three wipes and try it again.

Well I've done it and unfortunately have been having alot of hassle trying to get it to be stable. These are the two main issues:
1. I can't seem to get psx4droid to work properly. When I go to load a game by selecting its data.bin file the screen goes black for a few seconds and then returns to the select screen, instead of firing up the game. Does psx4droid actually run on gingervillain?
2. Also I have the other extremely annoying issue where if I turn my phone off it will not get any further than the gingervillain splash screen and just freezes on it. The only way passed this is to then go into CWM and wipe all the user data again!
Can anyone help with these two problems?
Use Oxygen 2.0.1 and download ADW Launcher, sounds like what you want, i have flashed just about all the ROM's and i reckon Oxygen is the best, then use UOT Kitchen to make some cool mods and ADW Launcher EX speeds it up alot also.
Plus its very stable and you wont get any boot loops or anything.

Microphone does not activate

Hi all,
When I answer calls the microphone does not seem to activate and the caller can't hear me at all. The only work around is to switch to speaker and the microphone starts to work. Have to keep headphones with me all the time
I'm on CM 7.1.0 jordan stable, should I reflash this ROM again?
Thanks.
Could be a hardware problem, but yes, just reinstall the same build to see if it is not a software problem.
Try to only wiping dalvik cache before or after flashing the zip (without wiping cache or data) first and you will not lose any of your current settings or apps.
Good luck.
Thanks AL, but wiping dalvik cache did nothing, so I made a backup with recovery and did a clean install and the microphone is working
I must have messed up something in the settings... any ways if I restore the backup is there a way to restore CM7 default settings and test? can't seem to find them :/

Well good that you now know that it's not hardare related.
The dalvik cache wipe was not a target solution on its own but just a step in what I would have done in order to keep yours apps, sms -and as much as you could- intact. So again; I would have just reinstalled the nightly AND wipe dalvik cache only (because it is always good to do so after a system installation).
But now, I would try to do this: wipe everything in cwm recovery (cache+data+dalvik), restore your nand and boot up.
If the problem is still there, then go back in cwm again and do what I just wrote above: dalvik cache wipe only and flash the nightly.
If it doesn't work, then backup your apps+data with TB, Astro or others and go clean install again...
Ok been re-flashing/restoring/testing... hence this late reply, the good news is that the microphone works now and I'm on the latest cm7.1 nightly.
The bad part is that the earpiece is dead?(on the current and clean install, maybe this was not working all along, with the mic) I know others have had issues with this? BUT seem to work only on skype calls, this would mean the earpiece is ok right, this is driving me nuts. any suggestions?
Or other recommended alternative ROM I can try or tests/debug form computer? really love CM tho.

[Q] How to upgrade rom without data wipe

Hello,
I have an Amazon Kindle Fire with gedeROM v1.7. I love the updates because it makes my device better and better.
But can i update my device without data wipe so i don't have to reinstall and reconfigure the entire device every time. And if I can can someone please tell me how.
My usual procedure is download file, data wipe, clear davlik and cache, flash, wipe cache restart and wonderfull a better device. But all the data and apps go with the wipe so any help would be awesome!
Thnx for all the help!!

If you're not switching to a different ROM (ie, from CM7 to CM9, or from hashcode to energy...) then you can optionally skip the data wipe (factory reset), which will retain your data and applications...
Alternatively, you may want to take a look at Titanium Backup.
Thnx for the info.
I have been hearing a lot about Titanium Backup, can you give more info about the program.
With TB you can back up any apps on your device. Then when you update a rom just download TB again and then you can restore your apps that you backed up. I love TB and use it on every device that I have rooted. It is a lifesaver!! Ok maybe a time saver anyway!! LOL!!!!
I had a REALLY bad experience from not wiping everything completely. I'd definitely do a backup, like Titanium or MyBackupPro, and wipe it all just to be safe. To many goofy things can happen if you don't.
It really depends on what ROM your flashing. There are rare occasions you can cross flash without issue. Not recommended. Just updating the same ROM so wipe is necessary, unless mentioned by the dev.
If you do wipe than BUYING titanium backup is the way to go. The free version doesn't auto install apps, each needs confirmation.
I can get any ROM on the kf or my gnex but up and running in less than 15 minutes.
this is what I have been doing and I am not sure if it's bad to do or not. I make a backup of just my data using twrp, then I wipe the caches and do a factory reset. Then I install the rom, and then restore my data using twrp

Restoring your backed up data is akin to not having done "factory reset" in the first place.
You shouldn't encounter any major issues so long as you're flashing newer versions of the same ROM and there hasn't been a large change (for example, switching to linaro).

Camera only works w/o flash after rooting (several roms) only stock rom allows works

Hi Guys,
I was wondering if anyone could help me with a strange issue I have.
When I flash to stock root ROM my phone works fine, including my camera, however, when I flash to ANY custom ROM my camera only works when my flash is off. If I turn the flash on the camera attempts to take a picture and then freezes and I have to do a battery pull to get it back on.
I will through a curveball here and say that I have had extremely limited success (but success nonetheless) when I use my original OEM battery.
The flash itself works fine as I can use apps like flashlight no problem.
Oh and app's from the Play store work fine as well w/ flash on.
Anybody experience this before? I have searched and found nothing,
Thanks everyone.
How are you wiping before flashing? I recommend wipe data, cache, dalvik, format /system.
And by "any" ROMs do you mean 4.2 ROMs or both 4.1 and 4.2?
Well the stock ROM was 4.1.1.
The thing is I've had this problem for a long time now so it would be on both 4.1 and 4.2.
New development though, I just re- flashed to PKD ROM and the flash works intermittently. It seems when I take a picture if something closeup with flash it works but when the subject is far away the camera app just goes black.
So, about your wipe procedures...

Sorry,
So when I flash a ROM I wipe data/factory clear dalvik and clear cache.
I've done that from stock to custom.
The next time you flash, have everything backed up/saved to your sd card or pay and follow the wipe procedures I recommended above. It wipes the OS completely off, leaving you a completely blank slate for the new rom. Have your desired rom and gapps on your micro sd card

You forgot to format /system manually in mount/boot, that causes a lot of errors (it caused a bootloop issue when going from stock to Slim for me)
