Hello now I know there are alot of guides and questions about this but I wanted to know about the epic 4g specific parts of rom making. Like getting it on a MTD partation. Anything really about the whole rom building process will be helpful too. I am going to need all the help I can get

You will probably need a ROM building mentor. I am sure you googled it already. I found some links for you in this search and most are general, specific to the Epic I had only found 2 on the first page.

While I don't know how to build a rom or theme, I do know how to port roms if you want help with that.
For themes/themed roms, you have to decompile framework-res.apk and any apks you want to theme.

Making it install to mtd has to deal with updater-script. The main parts of a rom are the kernel, init.d scripts, messing with libs, deleting bloatware, and theming it. You could also add custom ringtones and build.prop edits

Just an update, I switched Rom's from Stock to Syndicate Frozen and picked up the lockscreen there. I do not need this anymore, but you can still update it for those who want it on the stock Rom. Thanks for the efforts.
PS - The Syndicate Frozen Rom with the Twilight Zone Kernel is freakin' amazing. My phone is much faster than I ever thought it would be. ;D
Yes please. I have been waiting for an eco5 stock aosp. It would be great i u could develop this. Thanks in advance.

The eb13 one works just fine. I flashed it out of curiosity and it worked no issues. Been running it for a few days.
I'm not on stock though. I'm on syndicates ec05 rom

Why wouldn't you flash the one made for syndicate.
The problem with flashing something that's not made for particular roms is certain hacks/mods will not function correctly and cause problems. Flashing something designed for eb13 on ec05 is bad also as there has been changes to the .jar and coding so **** ain't lining up right. It may be minor or major but I can gyrante something is gonna break

If anyone is adventurous they can use this simple DIY guide. I've used it when new roms come out cause I don't like waiting around for someone to do it. It's handy. Amosher13's DIY: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=969354

You know how to modify and repackage ROMs.
That's different from building them. Especially with the Nexus devices, anyone adept at following instructions and digging a little can build a kang.
Then there's porting to new devices, fixing bugs, adding features.
Look at tutorials on how to build a generic AOSP ROM. Get that running in the emulator. Learn about repo, git, lunch, brunch and breakfast.
Create new device directories and go from there.
Tread very carefully, for a mistake here can very much brick your device. All it takes is an incorrect line in the output updater script, ask me how I know!
Make sure you have either plenty of:
-Time
-Computing power
Copious amounts of both are advised.
Good luck,
Darkshado

Lol! You also need lots of space on your computer! I mean, alot!
Because you are going to download ics or cm9 sources (bigger than GB)
Then you compile and it takes up even more space.
Even if you had lots of space and you compiled succesfully and booted up and running,
are you gonna spend the time and effort to fix the huge list of bugs/issues like the GalaxyICS team?
Anyways, try compiling if you want to. But you will be responsible for all of it
if you are very confident about it, why don't you try it!!
Alright guys, I fell out of the wagon of the whole android updates and mods and etc... well now I want to upgrade my epic 4g to whatever the latest build is for it. and I want themes on it.
i know there are probably threads on this already but all the ones I found are older and Im certain that they have newer ones out there.
can someone help me find the latest updates that are out there for my phone? also, I want to put this theme on it, or at least one like it... any suggestions?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=915041
That theme is for the HTC Eris. Don't try flashing it on the Epic. I recommend you go to Youtube and search for Qbking77. He has numerous videos for our Epic. Just watch his latest videos.
If you are already rooted go to Development and search for FC09 ROM, pick one and flash it. There is even a stock deodexed one there already for Samung Epic themes you will find in the themes subforum here. Look for EL30/FC09 compatible themes.

There is a nandroid dump floating around and there are already custom roms out for other phones.
What would I have to do to convert the nandroid dump or a rom for another phone to our phones?
Could I use a 4.0 kernel in a 4.1 rom?
Also, if I flash a bad rom, I can still get into recovery and restore a good one, right?
Im new to this, but I would really like to contribute to this and maybe get a project started.
If anyone with some more experience could help answer any of my questions that would be great.

Well this is a question, so the Q&A section.

Port the dump to our phone. Install the port if you can. Flash one of aeros ICS kernals one top of that. And if it boots, you have started a project. If not......... it was worth a try.
Could brick your phone, but if you wanted to start somthing this would be my best guess.

Development is for roms, not talk or asking to make one.
I'll move this to general
if you have never made a stock rom before, let alone ported a rom...and if you arent familiar w/ modding the ramdisk and hacking up jars/apks and what libs do what......
then dont bother
(this isnt me being a jerk, just pointing out you have to walk before you can run a marathon)

Hi, i've been reading up on some post and videos around here, gathering info on how to create my own custom rom. Im 17, i know some of you might not take me seriously, but i need help. What do some of you Devs use to create the roms? any tips or suggestions?
Anything is appreciated.
Thanks.
I'm definitely not a dev, but what kind of ROMs do you want to make?
Do you just want a modified/themed stock ROM or do you want to learn how to build from source?

well right now im wanting to do a modified/themed stock rom, but i do want to learn how to build from source.
Idk what I can say about making themed stock ROMs other than check out dsixda kitchen and uot kitchen. In my opinion I don't like themed stock ROMs. They are all pretty much the same with a different theme and the devs keep releasing full ROMs calling them something new but in reality it's just a new theme.
On the other hand for building a ROM from source, do some research on source.android.com and wiki.cyanogenmod.com
You can also join everyone on irc.freenode.net channels #ics-dev-e4gt and #jb-dev-e4gt and just see what the devs are working on, most are willing to help out and give advice, even for noobs like me.
Release themes! Not full stock ROMs!

I'm on FI03 Rooted, SGS Launcher, JB AOSP drop down notification, De bloated manually, Under Clocked to 1100, etc. etc. Hmm only dump it make a zip and Magic....
[ROM] [NEW] [Debloated FI03] ICS/JB Wirlpool v1.0.1 ROM[+Battery Saver Mods]....... Pssstt to make It only added about 30Mb+ to stock FI03 to make it look different.. Shhhhh! :sly:

Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
I know we're derailing this topic, but in my opinion we don't need all these themed ROMs. Just wrap it all up in 1 zip, flash it over the stock ROM it was built for, and voila... you have a themed/modified stock ROM.
Back to the topic, if you want to learn about ROM development you can learn a lot from what I posted earlier and just browsing XDA.
