G2 Keeps Shutting Off - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I bought my G2 off of craigslist and the guy I bought it off said it was a refurb (still had the plastics on it and everything). As soon as I got home I rooted it and installed CM7. I love this phone but I've been getting random shutdowns multiple times a day. I've noticed that it only happens when the screen is turned off.
I searched the forum but couldn't fix it with the suggestions I found. Battery is firmly in place, sd card slot locked, etc. I tried different ROMs and kernels but nothing seems to work. Am I out of luck?

Sorry to say, but you probably are SOL. I bought a G2 new from RadioShack in May and installed cm7 immediately. I had the same problem for months, or rather, mine will restart randomly. It seems to be intermittent though, sometimes it'll go days without happening, and other times it will happen repeatedly all day. Installing ICS hasn't helped either, so I thought it might be because of custom roms, but its not. My dad uses a stock g2 and has the same issues.
I have found that it seems to happen more whenever there is low/no cell coverage, when switching between tower and wifi, or after changing any radio state. Hopefully someone will come up with a solution for this apparent hardware problem. :-!

When the phone shuts off, can you turn it back on with the power button; or do you have to pull the battery, reinsert, and press power button?
Is the GPS on while the shutdowns occur?
If you've tried various ROMs and kernels, I'd say that its likely a hardware problem. In that case, there is not much you can do.
Even refurbs have some kind of warranty (on AT&T you get 30 days). So you should contact the seller and see if he can exchange it with T-Mob for you.

I had the same issue, mine would shut off when screen was off, would need to pull battery to restart. I read somewhere(when i find the link I'll post) that turning the GPS off fixes. I turn off gps when not using and the issue went away.
More info in this thread... Seems to be hardware issue and answer is to send in, I just tirn off the gps when not in use and I have no issues.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I can turn it on normally after it shuts off, no battery pull necessary. A weird thing is that sometimes when I wake the phone up I can actually see my G2 in the process of shutting off. And I keep my GPS off, so it's not the sleep of death problem either. Just a regular shutdown at the most random times. So you guys are probably right that I got a lemon.

[Q] Defy randomly dying

My defy is barely 2 months old, i am running CM7.1 since it was released and its quite smooth with no problems till now.
But recently i went to a remote place (i made another post somewhere) and switched SIM cards, i switched back SIM again now. Since then, my defy randomly dies sometimes while holding it and most times while in my pocket. My battery percent looks fine (i wiped it just in case).
This happened to me several times, i suspected the battery was loose, so at the beginning i reinserted my battery 2-3 times and it would start again. But now even after reinserting the battery it refuses to turn on, i usually need to connect it to a charger (or USB) and after the LED light turns on, i can switch it back on, disconnect it and use it again.. until it dies again randomly.
I tried inserting a piece of paper as padding to prevent the battery from moving, but didnt help much. When i shake it a bit, it dies too, so it might be a loose battery or some hardware problem, but the reason im baffled is why i cant turn it on again without connecting it to a charger, and also why it dies randomly when i leave it alone and didnt even touch it. Also, i never dropped it even once or mishandle it at all to make the battery be loose, when i insert tha battery, it still snaps/click into place just like when it was new.
ANy help suggestions will be appreciated. Sorry for the long post, just wanted to provide a detailed account.
I found an almost similar problem but no answer here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1109429
Firstly, check if your setVsel settings is all ok and not too low down specially the voltages settings. If you're not using SetVsel, then check your 2nd-ini in system - overclock settings, see if it enable and check those individual settings which might be too low that caused the phone under power/voltage and triggered self shut down.
Another option to narrow down your issue is trying another battery. Buy or borrow from a friend. If the case of random shut down still occur, then it might be hardware issue in your Defy mainboard. BUT.. I would flash it to another rom to make 100% sure before sending it back to the shop.
Thanks a lot for the reply, im not sure if its an overclock or vsel issue because it even dies sometime while booting up if i move it around, so im guessing battery or mainboard issue?? Ill have to check with another battery first then... hoping its not a mainboard issue coz the nearest service centre is miles away from where i live

Galaxy nexus randomly shuts off..

So...my girlfriend's galaxy nexus started randomly shutting off in the past few weeks..it was completely stock..so i decided to root it, change the kernel, ROM and baseband...
However, it still does it with no particular pattern..the only consistent thing is that it seems to happen when we're out of the house..not turning on or off any particular wireless service like wifi Bluetooth etc...i even tried tapping on the back a few times like some other forums suggested...but that didn't recreate the problem..so I'd really be happy to hear any troubleshooting/suggestions/etc..

heat? is it getting hot? the phone has a safety to shut odd when the cpu temp reaches 110C. but i find it hard to imagine that it reaches 110C just sitting there(unless its plugged in, sitting in a non ventilated area).
If it's doing that and its stock and unrooted then you need to take it back
forgot to remind you to return to stock & locked before taking it back....if you choose to do so

Yeah...i don't think it gets that hot
The phone is just usually in the car..and I've had the chance to hold it right after it shuts off..i wonder if taking the case off..in case, like you said, ventilation might be the problem..

Definitely..the root toolkit helps and i would able to flash a stock image and relock the phone..
just an extra bit of info in case someone googled/searched for this same problem and fell on this forum...
because after my searches, everyone that has had the same problem doesn't seem to have an answer...and now my phone, who did it a few times in the first few months...now has started to do it almost consistently...
randomly when i leave the house, it just goes to sleep and then the phone is turned off
the phone is NOT hot and it's literally minutes of being in the car or going for a walk, without bluetooth or gps or wifi on...and even when it is, sometimes it will still turn off
no pattern at all...both rooted and not, stock rom and not...stock kernel and not (have tried stock, james bond, and trinity so far)...
i'm going to try uping the min frequency and different governors to see what happens...
i will keep this thread updated
Try to see what happens if you hold the phone screen up and drop it 1 or 2 inches.
I am currently on my 5th Galaxy Nexus from Verizon. Phone 3 and 5 had a problem of turning off in my pocket. Almost every time I took the phone out is was off. I finally discovered that any jarring movement turns the phone off. If I did anything more then gently place it on the counter the phones would shut off. This occurs with the standard battery and back and the slim extended battery and battery back. The phone is inside a Seidio Convert case and this still occurs.

it seems like there's a good chance that's what's happening...as a fresh boot/install of any rom, including stock, and any kernel, any radio, all cause it to randomly shut down. but i noticed if it's NOT in my pocket and i hold it in my hand it almost never ever shuts down...so i'm thinking this is the problem...will keep this updated..thanks
I'm on my 4th Nexus because of "randomly" shutting down
As much as I love my rooted Nexus (4.1.1 ) full_toro_userdebug, after a couple of weeks, each phone has been shutting off randomly in my pocket or just jarring it in any way. I finally seemed to have fixed it by putting a small block of tissue paper the size of the battery between the case back and the battery.
It has allowed me to drop it from an inch or two above a wood table as drop it....It is 24 hours now. I will update with any change.

Any updates from you? I am having the same problem in that my screen will turn off and I can't get it to turn back on without pulling the battery. I can tell the phone is still on because LED notifications will continue to blink but the power button doesn't do anything.
Interestingly I've noticed lately that after I pull the battery and restart the phone, it seems to reset the battery stats. For example, tonight my phone has been off the charger for about 2 hours but after I just had to pull the battery, it booted back up and battery stats say it's been on battery for 24 minutes only.
Anyone else experiencing anything similar?

had this problem for several weeks: as long as i used the phone everything went fine but when i put it to sleep and stuff it in my pocket it shut itself down every second or third time.
your tipp with the tissue paper did the trick for me, no shutdown in the last five hours. thanks!
Has anyone found the reason for this happening? first time in eight months, my nexus turned down. first few turning offs phone has been hot and battery normal (70 ,80%). the last time the phone was cold and empty battery (although it was full). i am on custom rom (AOKP).

I suspect the phone is turning itself off because of a bad battery connection. I've had my GN for several months and it has just started turning itself off whenever it is in my pocket, and occasionally when I'm holding it. It all began after about a 4 foot drop which caused no visible damage. Reseating the battery appears to help. I hope it's this simple for everyone else.

i do not think that the battery connection is here a problem... when the phone was ˝off˝ i tried to call myself from mothers phone and everything was normal (in speaker of her phone it was ringing), but my phone was dead... nothing..
so i came to the conclusion that the phone is not exactly turned off, but the screen is and the power button does not work also. that is why i cant ˝turn on˝ my phone.
looks like the phone is in some kind of standby, but i dont know why this happens, maybe it is rom issue... i switched from AOKP to CM10 and so far (4 days) the phone has not been turned off by itself.
battery connection for me

I agree with the battery connection guess. I had the same problem of it turning off randomly and it hasn't happened to me since I cleaned off the connectors on both the battery and the phone. Good luck to everyone else!
i am having the same problem

do you also have dream scene enabled? i have noticed that when i have my nexus plugged in and the dream scene is on that it is hard to get it just to the main passcode screen upon hitting power button.
now the phone just randomly turns off , while in the middle of charging sitting completely still on my desk.
wtf is going on with this phone?
I had this issue when I first got the GN.
Unfortunately, I think it is a permanent hardware issue (at least it was for me). Not due to software/firmware or anything like that. I would get random reboots, sometimes once a week, sometimes twice a day.
I finally had to make use of the warranty and send it into verizon. I got a new one, and it works great! Not a single random shutdown or reboot.

[Q] Can someone repair Desire HD's? in the UK

Hi,
Ive read oni the forums that someone can repair DHD's.. my friend has one which doesnt power up, doesnt charge either.
Ive left the battery out over night then put on charge using mains adapter (genuine original) still no charge light at all.
on my HD2 i can power the phone up without battery inserted, just wondered if the DHD is normally capable of doing this, as its not doing that either.
it used to turn off or crash randomly, my plan was to root the DHD and see if the random power off issues would be resolved. after crashing randomly for the last time it seems to not want to power up at all, wether its plugged in or not.
Ive ordered a new battery in case its a battery issue (genuine battery) but wondered if this has been resolved by someone else using a different method. all the threads ive looked at here with similar issues seem to have not been resolved, or the thread gets hijacked/other peoples issues are slipped in and there is no real closure to the OP's post/issue
any help would be great
thanks

Ok, of course I know nobody in the UK to fix your friend's DHD as I am in Buenos Aires , but I would try to do the following: Wait for the new battery to try it out. If that does not work then contact HTC Service Centre and they will guide you.
If with the new battery the phone boots, but still behaves randomly, do not root it. Rooting it will not sort hardware issues out and it might leave you stuck in the middle of a process with a brick. Never root a phone with hardware issues, just try to solve that first.
If the issue was a Software one, then you can factory reset it and should be solved. Hope you can fix it. :good:

[Q] Phone turns off with SIM but works fine without it

I was running JellyTime R11 on my phone and used the included flashlight app with the experimental 'power light' option for approximately 20 minutes and suddenly my phone turned off. I used a USB juicepack to charge my phone while lighting. I think, though, that this has to do nothing with each other and simply has happened at the same time. I technically cannot explain this to myself...
I tried to restart it but shortly after showing the launcher it turned off again. This happens always with the SIM card but without everything works fine. I also tried to fire up my DHD with a different SIM card from the same carrier without success. And I am pretty sure that the SIM is fine but nevertheless I have ordered one free of charge.
I heard that there is a problem with the case and it doesn't hold the SIM correctly in place but I don't find this forum again...
What could I do next?
Today my new congstar SIM arrived and I replaced it with my old one but I am still bootlooping (Android Revolution 9.0) and my logcat shows totally different last log outputs.
Is this a hardware problem? Should I open my DHD and have a look at the interior?
there is a chance that something got fried in those 20 min. i think that option keeps tle flashlight lit on full power, which it was never ment to. that might cause thermal damage.

Mhm, it was already cold outside but that could be but the two LEDs are far far away from my sim slot?! The battery is still far away...
Isn't there a disclaimer while activating that experimental mode stating that it might cause damage to your phone, its been a long time since I used CM.
BTW yes it IS highly likely hardware damage has occurred because leaving flashlight on for 20 min on extream mode, bit silly IMHO.
I already found the solution for my problem--I just forgot to post it here...
Actually my battery died pretty suddenly and I did not noticed this. I just thought "my phone had a bad day". After replacing the battery with a fresh one everything worked again. As of today I am still using this battery.
The phone died with SIM likely because it needed too much energy and without it had no chance of using cellular network...

Phone randomly rebooting

Hi all
Apologies if this has been covered before, but I've done many searches and can't find something that matches my unique symptoms, that has pin pointed the root cause.
I've basically got an Australian model LG G3 (D855), and for about the last 3-4 months it has been randomly rebooting itself. It is generally (but not always) triggered when I'm undertaking an action (playing a game, taking a photo, opening an app).
It seems to have progressively gotten worse, to the point where lately it's at time going into an infinite loop, which can only be broken by plugging the phone in to charge it (often pulling the battery out and putting it back in does nothing, as it just continues to reboot once I power it on again).
The whole thing is very random. Some days it can go hours on end without happening. Others, it's every few minutes.
I'm beginning to think that it's battery related, but have read other reports of people with similar issues who have replaced the battery, but with no success, so am not sure. The phone is rooted and currently on a custom rom, but the issue predated the ROM (ie occured on the stock ROM also).
Any suggestions, advice, ideas would be greatly appreciated.
cheers!
So I ended up replacing the battery and problem solved (got someone to test the battery and it was completely stuffed).
/thread
I had the same issue and my phone getting random shutdown and only way to turn it on was to pull the battery.
I went to LG service center and they replaced motherboard without any tests.
And now the issue is gone. It seems LG is also aware about this issue.
