[Q] Manually Roam? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

So i have zero service when im in my house but when i roam i have full service. clear calls and everything. what i would like to know is if there is any way to manually roam when i am am home and then back to auto roam when im not?

Download the app Roam Controle from the market. Works, only has 3 buttons, no questions asked. Even iphone users can figure it out

Yes, there is a way. There is a program called Roam Control available that will allow you to do this.
It used to be available in the Market, but the cell phone manufacturers have gotten Google to remove it.
There is no other way to force roamingon a Sprint phone unless you flash a custom prl, which could get you kicked off Sprint.

Just google it, you will find many. Zip downloads of it. Once you install it then make a backup with titanium backup so you can have it forever

Not getting back on the market, it looks like...
It doesn't sound like it's getting back on the market any time soon, either. This isn't the first time it's been removed:
NOTE (12/21/2011): I'm sorry to report that Roam Control has pulled from the market yet again. It's the same story as before...I received an automated email from Google that did not provide any specifics on why the app was pulled. I have tried to appeal the decision numerous times, but I have yet to receive any type of acknowledgement or response from the Android market team.

That only works if you were able to purchase it via the Market to get the license.

Is there a way to force roaming?

I'm tired of weak signal areas where I slip in and out of roaming, is there a forced roaming app or some type of hack/mod where I can make my phone roam?
You have two choices:
1) Load a Verizon PRL. This involves a good amount of trickery (I haven't tested it myself) but there's instructions around here. This will get your 3G data as well.
2) Get a ROM such as CyanogenMod which has a forced-roaming option. Open up Settings>Wireless & networks>Mobile networks and in there will be an option to select what group (Home Only, Affiliated Networks, Automatic. Automatic is default) of networks to choose. By selecting Affiliated Networks, that will enable forced-roaming, but will only give you 1X data, not 3G.
For calls, Twitter, and push notifications, the 1X data roaming will suffice, especially if you want to switch back and forth (ie, the bad signal is only at work, but you have good reception everywhere else). Personally, I switch to Affiliated Networks when I'm at work, as getting calls and texts is a lot more important for my job than just being able to download a webpage faster.
Damn so I'd have to switch to a ****ty rom to get the option?
That sucks, I don't know how to change the prl so I'm stuck

A ****ty ROM? That's kind of harsh dude... i thought that someone had an app that did the same thing as the affiliated network switch in CM6?

"****ty ROM"? Have you even tried CM6 Final? Furthermore, go screw yourself with a rusty rake. Nobody's going to help an ungrateful prick.
weehooherod said:
Changing the PRL isn't actually that hard. You download the PRL file and just put it on your memory card. Then you download the application called "MSL Reader" from the market and it will tell you your 6 digit MSL code. Then you go to your phone dialer and type in ##PRL# and it will prompt you to put in your MSL. Then you click on the 00001.prl file (which is the only one there) and then press the menu button and then press commit and you're done.
Here is the original thread I got this from.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696073&highlight=evdo+sprint
If dialing ##PRL# doesn't do anything you need to swap out the EPST.apk file with a EPST.apk file that will support these dialer codes. Here is that thread too.

That requires that EPST even works for your ROM, and unless you have the ever-so-wonderful battery and CPU hogging Sense UI, it won't.

I called it ****ty because it doesn't even have sense and I guess I can adjust to not having it, but the 4G doesn't work!

Actually I'm very grateful that you took the time to help, didn't mean to offend, I apologize if you took it that way (now that I re-read my comment, I see why you took it that way) but I was just frustrated because I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place, either go through with a procedure I'm not comfortable with OR flashing a ROM that (and this is the whole reason I called it ****ty) doesn't have sense nor does it even have 4G - one of the MAIN REASONS FOR ME BUYING THE PHONE! Understand my dilemma?
I use 4G regularly, so CM6 is a huge no-no for me.
once again, I apologize if you took offense to my comment.

Yes If you have root there is now. Roam Control on the market by Mr Greg. 5 bucks think. I rooted my EVO yesterday Stock 2.2. Then I bought roam control. I can verify this works on the stock rom.

Does ROAM control work on your epic?

Roam control is not working for me, I was running Midnight ROM 3.1 and it never worked. I even tried the stock dl18 rom rooted and no luck with that either. Is it working for anyone else?
Thanks
I've used it with DK28 extended, the last three versions of nebula, and viper. Its the only way I get signal in a 3 block area around my house

dont know if it works, but i do have it turned on anyways
I am running a Syndicate 2.1 ROM and I get Roam notif's sometimes here at home when my service is out of range...
Roam control has been working fine for me on the last few versions of Viper (4.0.1, 4.0.2c, 4.0.3 and 4.0.4).
Works for me. I have to have the 'reboot' option selected.
When my phone restarts I have a little triangle over my signal bars. If you don't get the triangle you're not roaming.
No issues here. I'm running Bonsai v 2.0.1. I had viper trinity v1, apocalypse and frozen. Worked on all those too.
Works fine for me on Bonsai 2.01. No problem either on any previous ROMs I've tried.

Hey MrGreg question about your app, with it forcing roam you are only able to obtain 1xRTT right? Or does this somehow allow 3g roaming with Sprint -> Verizon?
I have good 3g almost everywhere already but wondering if it may be worth buying just to have to force Verizon if needed.
Works fine on stock Eclair rom rooted. Sometimes I get a some sort of java error, but it always changes. Make sure phone type is set.
Mine doesn't work. Tried reboot and I get no signal at all when I force into roam. Works fine both networks. I'm in Orlando,FL.

I've already tried selecting the maufacturer (samsung) and I have even tried reboot on selection, maybe its the way I rooted it, how did you root your phone. I used z4root. Whenever I click roam only, it just asks for root and when I press accept, the service/roam stays the same.
Does somebody know a fix for this?

It puts the phone into a roam only mode and the phone generally roams according to the PRL, so you're limited by the roaming agreements. You'll most likely get 1x data speeds.
I say the phone generally roams according to the PRL because I've seen a few areas where the phone will get a roaming signal in "automatic" mode but not in "roam only" mode, or it will get 3G roaming in "automatic" mode but only 1x in "roam only" mode. I'm not sure how the roaming algorithm is implemented on the phone, but it seems slightly different between the two modes.

I did say that the app puts the phone into a roam only mode, but there are some limitations with the Samsung phones. They seem to only roam on the 800mhz frequency band when in this mode. There are a few areas in the US that are 1900mhz only (Chicago, most of TX, parts of FL, etc), which means the Samsung phones will not get any signal when using Roam Control. If this is the case for you, send me an email and I can give you a refund.
If you attempting to put it in "roam only" mode and the phone stays on Sprint, that's a different story. Does the app display any errors? Does the signal disappear momentarily and them come back?

The phone just stays on sprint when I click roam only, when I had it for the evo, it worked perfectly. It showsno errors when I click the app. When I click roam only, it just says that roam control has been granted superuser permissions, and nothing else happens, it just stays on sprint. Do you kno what may be causing the problem? Also, when I click about and press view log file, it just shows 105 if that helps. I am rooted via z4root if that might also pose a problem
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Roam Control not working anymore? :(

Ever since eclair, I've been using the Roam Control app alot on my Epic. There are certain areas that I am in daily that just get spotty/no signal at all. I flash ROMs quite often, and one of the ROMs I flashed in the past killed the Roam Control app. I'm not sure if flashing Froyo was the reason, but I do know that it worked perfectly in the past with this phone.
When I press roam only, it doesn't do anything. It asks for SU permission but the signal bars stay the same. I don't lose signal all together or roam-- this app has no effect on me anymore.
What is the problem here? I am using the latest version of the app (1.5.4) and if it means anything, I'm on ACS' wonderful ROM- 1.1.1.
Does this happen to anyone else, and is there any way to fix it or any other way to force roam?
Thanks!
I had mine break before as it kept telling me to purchase it even though I had already. After numerous attempts of clicking roam, switching devices in settings and trying to connect, uninstalling and reinstalling, and reboots it randomly started working again. Sorry that's not much help but maybe one of those techniques will work for you I wish I knew what exactly fixed but I was doing everything that I don't remember what it finally was, sorry.
I now just use a verizon prl instead so I can get 3g and not just the 1x roam control only allows. Good luck. If I think of anything about exactly what I did I'll let u know.

I checked the auto reboot and when it eventually rebooted, it actually messed up my phone and I got a bunch of FC's
How do you use the Verizon PRL?
Roam control actually works much better for me now the I'm on the ee03 modem
Hmm...theres something wrong on my end then? I tried installing the Roam Control before anything else and it still doesn't work.
Are there any other apps that force roam?
i intsalled roam control and it did nothing. i set everything up and when i manually set it to roam it does nothing. i set it to auto and move to an area i know i get terrible signal and nothing. odd seeing as it has worked for so many.
In my house I get 1 bar on sprint towers, and when I turn on roam control I get 5 on verizons, Ive been using it since February and I believe twice it would kinda wig out and say no signal for about 10 mins or so no matter what I did, I believe it was some kind of auto update or perhaps just resetting itself? Anyways it always came back, the first time was like 10 mins the second was about 5 mins. I know that doesnt explain anything but Its what I have experianced using it. All in all a great app that I use all the time.
I am on the SFR 1.1.1 with EE03 modem and use Roam Control while at work all the time with no problems. I have had the license issue before, but a phone reboot and data connection fixed that.
I would recheck Superuser to see if Roam Control still had permission, also check mobile network settings set to Automatic, and then maybe fix permissions with CWM.
Disclaimer: I am not very developer savvy, so I do not know if these are a waster of time or not.

I wiped all my data and started from fresh, installing Roam Control, making sure that it had SU permission, and made sure that roaming was allowed in the mobile network settings. I went into CWM and fixed my permissions, but it's still the same

Just be warned, 3G roaming on Verizon may venture into excessive roaming of your Sprint contract and get your account cancelled. No one has a completely clear answer on what excessive is.

If you are using a backup version of Roam Control then it will not work for some reason.. everytime I change to a diffrent ROM and try reinstalling my apps that I backed up.. Roam Control does the samething.. it wont change your signal.. it just does nothing..
this happens no matter how I restore it.. using Titanium Backup, APP Monster or MyBackup Pro.
Roam Control is the only app I have to reinstall from the Market for it to work properly.
Hope this helped!!
Just to be sure, everyone having problems with Roam Control is going into settings and choosing Samsung as their phone model...yeah?
I've had a few problems with roaming on the GB leak, but it's mostly just more of the same weirdness where I randomly have to reset the modem to get a data connection, and Android refuses to 'Never Ask Again', no matter what settings I check.
Otherwise, I've been roaming with Roam Control daily at work. Mind you, I'm not on any custom kernels.
/sometimes if I start Roam Control when I have absolutely no signal, it'll try to confirm my license, fail, and then get really really pissy until I close out of it, get data back, and run it again, at which point it behaves like I just installed it
//Roam Control is fantastic for when Gingerbread's data breaks, even when on Sprint, since you can just go in, tap Automatic, and it'll reset the modem for you without requiring a reboot

[Q] Roam Control....?

Ok so I bought roam control and it seems as tho it refuses to go into roaming.
I read this faq and it says,
"My phone does not get any signal when in “roam only” mode.
Chances are you have a Samsung phone. Samsung phones have different behavior - when in "roam only", they only roam on the 800mhz frequency band. There are areas in the US that are 1900mhz only, which means that Samsung phones will not get a signal in those areas."
However, when i'm not trying to force roam, it still goes into roaming sometimes but only when i'm not forcing it.
Is there any way I can change something to make it work?
Some one here may have an answer but if the application is 'acting up'/buggy you may have to contact the developer
Did you see this:
"Please send all questions and comments to [email protected]" The developer may be able to help you.
Or this one:
"If you wish to contact us, please send questions and comments to [email protected]. Make sure to include as many details as possible in your email."
Yeah I noticed that but I had assumed that this was something I could get a quicker response from our community. I'll contact him.

I have been using roam control since I got this phione and before on a Samsung Moment.
When I was running GB roms on this phone it worked flawlessly with it set to:
Phone Manufacturer: Samsung
Action after selection: exit app
Since I changed to ICS roms it has been a bit wonky though (same settings). It sometimes takes a minute or two to switch in or out of forced roam. Very infrequently it drops out of the app without doing anything. Make sure you have the roam notification box checked off while troubleshooting so you know what state it is really in. Also maybe try changing the action setting to reboot after selection as that was required for my Moment to work correctly. Since you have just installed it, this is probably not an issue for you but several times after flashing new roms it stopped working and I had to delete/reinstall it after restoring my apps. Just deleting data and cache never fixed it. Even now I "think" it is acting up a little but it is working correctly.
Well I have actually tried it on 3 roms now and its the same result. I've tried the rebooting option but that didn't work either. I first tried on aokp and then on stock fe10 and now on gb el29, none of which will pick up the roaming.

I'm running the newest version of ROAM Control with PRL 11115 and it works flawlessly on both GB and ICS.
The trick, you really need to pay for it. The newest versions hacked and cracked simply do not work right. Sometimes they work for a while then they do not but paid for legit keys work 100% from what I've seen.
Out of respect for Mr Greg I'd rather not say which one older version seems to work 100% even if its pirated but as I said above, the newest one with a legit key will work.
I think a lot of it has to do with the part of the country your in. In the Omaha area...feel free to chime in Omaha-ens, it just won't work. I think it has to do with the frequency issue and the network your trying to roam too.
I'm not looking for a freebie. I did buy it. It just won't work for me, which is why i'm looking for an older version.

Yeah, i'm waiting on a response. I trust that we will figure this out.
If you searched any of the other 10 or so threads on this you would see Samsung cannot always roam 3G depending on what spectrum Verizon is using, it has to do with PCS block.
If you roam 1x at all forced it is working.

[Q] 2 Questions... Roaming & Sprint Diagnostics App

Ok so I downloaded the paid app "Roam Control", worked GREAT for the first few weeks, but now when I try and force roam in crappy Sprint reception areas, it won't roam and I'll be stuck on 1 Bar 3G Sprint. I did not install any new apps or anything to mess with it so I don't get why it will not force roam. My phone however WILL roam on itself (just as all of yours will do) but like I said when I try to force roam, it won't work.... any ideas?!
Also, I installed the Sprint Diagnostics App (v1.0) so I do not have to go back to a TouchWiz ROM every time I want to update my profile/PRL, but it just force closes when I do so. I also notice that I can "Write PRL" and there is a "PRL Manager", can I just go HERE and follow directions to get a preferred roaming list (Verizon has a very strong signal, whereas Sprint's is low-medium). Also is v1.0 the newest version of Sprint Diagnostics app?
Thanks to all that can help!!
Last I heard that diagnostic app won't work with the s3. He designed it for the gnex. Some users could get the prl write to work but wouldn't stick. I haven't seen much in the thread (I assume I'm still subscribed) so I believe the app to be dead. It was included in a ROM but can't remember which.
